Assateague Island is a unique barrier island located off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. The Assateague Island State Park and the Assateague Island National Seashore are both on the Maryland side of Assateague, closest to Ocean City, Maryland.  Chincoteague occupies the lower half of Assateague Island off the Virginia side and is managed by the National Park system.  Known for its wild ponies, pristine beaches, and diverse wildlife, Assateague Island attracts visitors from all over the world. While summer is the most popular time to visit, winter has its own charm and unique advantages. In this article, we’ll explore 5 reasons why winter is a great time to visit Assateague Island.

Witness the Winter Wildlife

Assateague Island is home to a diverse array of wildlife that can be seen year-round, but winter is a particularly special time to witness some of the island’s unique inhabitants. During the winter months, visitors can catch a glimpse of the majestic bald eagle as it soars overhead. They can also observe the playful antics of harbor seals, who make their way south to the island to escape the harsh winter weather up north. Other winter visitors to the island include various waterfowl, such as loons and grebes, which can be seen bobbing on the waves of the Atlantic.

Enjoy the Peaceful Solitude

You can find yourself all alone to enjoy the beach during the winter months on Assateague Island.

During the summer months, Assateague Island can get quite crowded. Visitors flock to the island to soak up the sun on the beach, swim in the ocean, and observe the wild ponies. In the winter, however, the crowds dissipate, and visitors can enjoy the peaceful solitude of the island. The beaches are quiet and serene, making it the perfect time for a contemplative stroll or a cozy beach picnic. The island’s trails are also much less busy, providing an opportunity for a peaceful hike through the island’s stunning natural landscapes.

You can still see the wild ponies on Assateague during the winter months, but you won’t see all the people.

Assateague Island is a photographer’s paradise year-round, but the winter scenery is particularly striking. The island’s windswept dunes and marshes are covered in a blanket of snow, providing a unique and beautiful backdrop for photographs. The winter light can be particularly stunning, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sun’s rays reflect off the snow and ice. Visitors to the island during the winter months will have a chance to capture some truly breathtaking photographs.

While winter is not the peak season for events on Assateague Island, winter does have its fair share of activities available.   Some winter events on the island include bird-watching tours and New Year’s Day beach walks.  You can venture into Ocean City where the best lodging can be found to experience Winterfest, The Love on Tap festival at Seacrets,  St. Patrick’s Day,  and the Ocean City Film Festival.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Assateague Island during the winter months is the cost savings. Many of the island’s hotels, campgrounds, and rental properties offer significant discounts during the off-season, making it a more affordable time to visit. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of lower rates for activities such as horseback riding and kayaking. In the winter,  bring your own kayaks – and horses for that matter.  You can even camp with your horses on the island in the off-season.   With the cost savings, visitors can extend their stay on the island and explore everything that Assateague has to offer.

Stronger in Orange Fundraiser will benefit Tyler Walsh and family.

In the coastal town of Ocean City, Maryland, the spirit of community is shining brighter than ever as friends, family, and locals come together to help Tyler Walsh adapt his home to accommodate a new life with accommodated needs.  Tyler, a beloved local resident, and student at Stephen Decatur High School, has faced numerous challenges in recent months, after being the victim of a hit and run motorcycle incident this summer. Despite these hardships, he has not faced them alone—his close-knit group of friends, known as “The Gators,” has been there every step of the way, rallying together to help rebuild his home and support him through a particularly difficult time.

An Emotional Challenge

In addition to his mobility challenges, Tyler has recently experienced the heartbreaking loss of his mother to cancer. With his father stepping up to care for him, his twin sister, Emma, and his younger brother, Carter, the family has been navigating this emotional journey with resilience and love. Now, Tyler’s friends and community are stepping up to ensure he has a home that is both comfortable and accessible for him as he begins this new chapter in his life.

Stronger In Orange Fundraiser

The support from Tyler’s community has been overwhelming, with “The Gators” lending a hand along with Berlin based construction company, T&G Builders, to assist with the significant home modifications required to make his living space wheelchair-friendly. To further help the cause, a special fundraiser event called “Stronger in Orange” has been organized to benefit the Walsh family. The event will be held at the Aloft Ocean City on Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The “Stronger in Orange” fundraiser will offer an evening of camaraderie, entertainment, and giving. Tickets are available for $25 for adults, while tickets for children under the age of 12 are $15. Attendees will enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres and a drink ticket, along with the chance to bid on silent auction items, win raffle prizes, and participate in various other fun activities throughout the night. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Wax, ensuring a lively and memorable event for all who attend.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to the Walsh family to help cover the costs of the necessary home renovations, including wheelchair ramps, wider doorways, and other modifications to ensure Tyler’s home is safe, accessible, and comfortable. The “Stronger in Orange” event not only aims to raise funds but also to raise awareness of the challenges faced by individuals with mobility impairments and their families.

Let’s look at several pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between November 2nd thru November 8th.  The weather in Ocean City for the past week continued to be outstanding, even though a little rain would be welcome.

The 2nd annual running event occurred on Saturday, November 2nd.  This running event featured four lengths:  5K, 8K, half marathon and full marathon.  The 5k and 8k were held on the Ocean City boardwalk and the half marathon and full marathon featured runners running between Ocean City and Assateague Island.  The best time for the full marathon was by Will Rehrig of Middletown, Delaware at 2:35:08 for men and Lizzie Thomas of Ellicott City, Maryland at 2:55:51 for women.    There was a large turnout for each of the races.

Some of the select pictures highlighted this week were a view of the Angler Restaurant and bayside properties from the Route 50 Bridge, a view of the rooftops in downtown Ocean City, and the “love shells” located in containers on the boardwalk between 23rd and 24th Streets. Also included is a bayside marina picture near Somerset Street.

Update on Redevelopment Projects in Downtown Ocean City

In March of 2024, we presented an article on several small to medium sized projects that were under construction and renovation in downtown Ocean City in various phases.  As mentioned then, generally, the projects that receive the most attention are often the large projects in Ocean City.  It was noted that the bigger projects often get more attention due to their larger impacts in terms of employment, customer attraction and tax base generation.  But they are often criticized due to their traffic generation, new parking demands, additional demand on area affordable housing, and incompatible building scale with adjacent properties, and more. 

The new construction projects that “fly under the radar” are often the small and medium sized projects.  These projects are often constructed on single and double sized lots.  These single projects may seem minor to many, but these improvements add to the overall urban fabric of the downtown area.  They are often infill projects.   They still provide increases in tax base and employment opportunities benefiting the Town of Ocean City and Worcester County, but tend to be more of an incremental approach to a district and neighborhood.  For this reason, they are more acceptable, but get less attention.

So, let’s highlight an update of the status of these projects that were noted in our March article in the downtown area of Ocean City:

  1. 106 S. Baltimore Avenue

    This new construction project is nearly completed and is being built on a vacant site at a very visible location at the northwest corner of S. Baltimore Avenue and Talbot Street. The former building, called the Taylor House (and Perdue House by others) was demolished about five years ago by a previous owner.  The site plan was approved and building permit issued includes two buildings on this single lot.  Each of these two buildings contain first floor parking (some in its garage and some outside) and six bedrooms.  The project started slow due to material delays, but is scheduled to be completed by the end of the 2024. Upon completion these housing units are expected to be for rental projects catering to tourists.

    This small two-story project was completed for this summer season and was used for rental housing. Each of these two units (one per floor) contains about 730 square feet and each has two bedrooms.  The new building followed the footprint of the original building.  The building has a simple design with a gabled roof and a fiber cement board exterior. The project has been moved along nicely and was completed in April 2024.

    This is the site of the former Bridgeview Apartments at the entrance of the Route 50 Bridge into Ocean City. The former building had numerous code violations and was eventually demolished.  The new owner received site plan and building permit approvals for a building with four townhouses on this lot.  The units are now complete and contain bottom floor garage parking and two upper living area floors with a gross living area of between 1,400 and 1,600 square feet.   These units were completed in July 2024 and used for seasonal rentals.

    This property is located at the northwest corner of Philadelphia Avenue and Kingfish Street.  Construction for this attractive two-story office building was completed in June, 2024. This building is the new home of the Harrison Group.  The building contains 9,826 square feet of commercial office space.  The previous use on this property was a miniature golf course (Nick’s Mini Golf) that relocated several streets to the north of this property.

  1. 2009 Philadelphia Avenue

    This property now contains the relocated Nick’s Mini Golf, which moved from 1801 Philadelphia Avenue due to the new Harrison Group construction. This new use contains a Jurassic Park themed mini-golf course as well as a ropes course.  Its parking is located several lots south along Philadelphia Avenue.  The owner was anxious to start this project once he received the necessary permits from the Town of Ocean City and was open for nearly the full 2024 summer season.

    Several years ago, the Bank of Ocean City closed this branch that operated as the bank’s original location in 1916. The Bank donated this building and property to the Town of Ocean City.  The Town of Ocean, the and Ocean City Lifesaving Station Museum worked together to create plans and strategize to renovate this older structure into an annex for the Museum.  This renovation project received several grants and extensive work has been completed.  The work included interior and exterior improvements.  The intent was to restore this building to its original 1910 appearance with its exterior porches. The work was completed and a grand opening was held int

  2.  September, 2024.  The OC Lifesaving Station Museum installed various information posters and other assorted items related to the former bank use.  New historic exhibits will be added in the near future.

 

Besides these six projects, there are a number of small and extensive building renovation projects underway throughout the downtown area; some with assistance of the Ocean City Development Corporation’s various renovation and enhancement programs. 

There are also several new projects that have been approved by the Town of Ocean City’s Planning and Zoning Commission, however, these are in various phases of construction and renovation, too.  These new projects in downtown Ocean City will be the basis of an upcoming article.

These smaller and medium sized projects provide a variety of uses in their construction and renovation projects underway in the downtown area of Ocean City.  Each of these completed projects add to the variety and interest of what makes the Ocean City downtown area so special to residents and visitors.  On your next visit to the downtown area make sure you see these new projects and hope that you appreciate that each provides as an asset to the urban fabric of the redevelopment of downtown Ocean City.

TikTok superstar, Wyatt Moss, visited Ocean City, Maryland this past weekend with one goal in mind! Running the Ocean City, Maryland marathon. But that’s not all!

At the beginning of each year, Moss decides to take the year by the horns and set an elite goal to not only challenge himself but give him more of an overall purpose in life. His goal for 2024 was to run a marathon in all 50 states! Crazy? Yes! Doable? Very! But it hasn’t come without its challenges. 

Kindness Matters

Typically, marathons are held in the spring and fall, which allows runners for more optimal weather. Being able to finagle and plan all 50 states within a 365 day time frame seemed almost impossible. Some days Moss flew from state to state in order to claim a race, while other times he flew, landed, then had to drive up to 4-6 hours to reach his destination. Sleeping in airports and thriving on the kindness of others (getting free sushi at the Portland airport). In other cases, car rentals were unavailable along the East Coast and his shoes he ordered were nowhere in sight! But none of this stopped him.

Assateague to The Boardwalk

Wyatt finished the Ocean City, Maryland marathon at the inlet in his famous onsie costume.

Wyatt visited Ocean City, Maryland this past weekend to check off Maryland and the 43rd marathon in this year’s challenge. After seeing the horses of Assateague Island and running along the 2 miles of boardwalk in a blue animal onsie, Moss headed to New York City to the world famous New York City Marathon.

Wyatt makes a game plan after rounding the pier at Jolly Roger- he was leaving immediately after to run the New York City Marathon.

Moss is not only popular for wanting to run all 50 states in one year, but his unconventional, fun, and flat out laughable outfits. Some of his running outfits include overalls, jeans and a button up, a cow onesie, a blow up dinosaur Halloween costume, daisy dukes, and the most famous- a full tuxedo at this past weekend’s New York City Marathon. 

What Can We Learn from Moss?

It seems that the most important thing to learn from Wyatt Moss is that life is all about challenging yourself to do hard things, engage in some fun, and don’t take yourself too seriously. Let’s look at several pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between October 26th thru November 1.  This past week featured several special events in Ocean City. These included the 2024 Sunfest’s last two days and OCToberfest and its Halloween Beach maze and related Halloween items.

The 49th annual SunFest returned for October 24th thru 27th.  The weather was fantastic.  Great music, vendors, activities, and beer and wine selections, too.  The last two days of Sunfest (Oct. 26th and 27th) resulted in large crowds which followed the first two days.  All sponsored by the Town of Ocean City and free.

2024 Halloween Beach Maze

The Town of Ocean City featured its OCToberfest Halloween Beach Maze which is always a fun event from October 24th to 27th.  Other related activities to OCToberfest included Howl-O-Ween Pet Parade, Drive in Disguise, and The Great Pumpkin Race.  This Haunted Beach Maze was located on the beach by N. Division Street.  Scary figures were found throughout this long maze, but there are also live figures, dressed in costumes, that sometimes jump out!  This was a free and well attended event again this year.

Some of the select pictures highlighted this week were a quiet morning along Wicomico Street (just off the boardwalk) and its downtown bars, the recently new sand barriers located along the boardwalk area, and the tall tower located at the south end of the boardwalk by the Ocean City Lifesaving Station Museum.

We also included an Inlet picture of a boater returning back to Ocean City during the morning hours and also the strong morning winds we experienced and seen at the bayside end of Talbot Street.  As evident during this boat ride the inlet was fairly mild at that time.

Just as striking as the Ocean City beach sunrises are the pictures that highlight some of the iconic buildings and businesses in Ocean City.  This week it was The Kite Loft (between 5th and 6th Streets) and Shenanigans Irish Pub and Grille (at 4th Street).

End of parking meters

Yes, as we come to November 1st, the public and on street parking meters are turned off until the end of March.  While this end is always welcomed by visitors and residents it also means the season is officially over.  However, it also brings on some of the great hotel and restaurant specials that all can enjoy by coming to Ocean City during this offseason.

The Captain’s Table

Along with the South African lobster tail, The Captain’s Table offers infused alcohol and live piano music.

Known for their incredible South African lobster tail and crab cakes, chef Mike Warman pulls out all the stops for Fall. Located right on the boardwalk at 15th street, The Captain’s Table offers a beautiful bar, cozy dining, and live piano music every Friday and Saturday night. We recommend their crab cakes (which are also gluten free), the divine surf and turf, and lobster stir fry. If you’re looking for cocktails, ask the bartender for their infused drink of the season. We recommend the bacon infused bourbon. 

Harrison’s Harbor Watch

Winning Best of Ocean City Raw Bar and Best Sit Down Restaurant, Harrison’s offers some of the best local seafood in Ocean City, Maryland. Located at the very end of the Ocean City boardwalk, Harrison’s has an unobstructed view of the inlet and Assateague Island. While taking in the view, you must try their famous oyster stew! A recipe that’s withstood the test of time, you can watch oysters being shucked, and the stew is whipped up right in front of you. Grab a seat at the bar if you want a front row view of this soup making experience. 

Ask for the best seat in the house and the hostess may just take you to the captain’s table, a unique four person table, fit for well…a captain! Appetizers are a must here. We recommend the coconut shrimp, bacon wrapped scallops, and Maryland style crab soup that will warm you up on these chilly beach evenings. For dinner, order the bright lemon basil chicken, broiled stuffed shrimp, and a Maryland favorite- the rockfish. We can’t forget sides- unlimited sides, might we add. The side items menu offer several gluten free options such as cucumber salad, vegetable of the day, but their steamed potatoes are to die for!

Spain Wine Bar

Spain serves up exquisite tapas style pairings and savory paella with a view.

Voted Maryland’s Best Roof Top Restaurant and Best of Ocean City Sunset View, Spain Wine Bar, is upscale dining at its finest. With a rotating menu, highly trained chef, Oscar Benitez, always wows the crowd with tapas style food and sharable paella that leaves you wanting more. Begin your evening with a charcuterie board spread with mangalica ham, hot coppa, queso iberico, and chorizo picante. Tapas style dishes we recommend are hot lump crab fritters, fresh roasted beet salad, beef sliders, and savory grilled swordfish kabobs. We also have to mention their cream of crab soup- a staple in a Maryland beach restaurant! Paella dishes are also on our top favorites at Spain Wine Bar. The valencia paealla with new york strip, chorizo, sausage, and chicken is a show stopper. You will need a box to go because the large portion is enormous. 

While dining at the restaurant with the “best sunset view,” be sure to ask your servers how to pair these delightful dishes with a handmade signature cocktail. We recommend a  smokey old fashioned made right at your table, a chilled glass of champagne to pair with your sunset photos, or a glass of hearty red to compliment your paella. Seasoned and knowledgeable servers, Nina and Felix, always have the best recommendations. Be sure to ask!

Fall means football and Vista Roof Top knows it! Vista Roof has a special dedicated menu for NFL game days (offered at the bar only). Key West Chicken marinated in tangy Key West sauce with shoe string french fries are perfect for watching your team of choice. Their 8 oz. beef NFL burger topped with chimichurri, lettuce, and tomato- classic game day food along with a crab cake sandwich on a buttery brioche roll. 

We can’t forget the game day drinks- margaritas, crushes, and seltzers are always available along with chosen craft beer. 

Marlin Moon

Marlin Moon offers a delicious Fall menu including entrees such as blackened sea scallops and steak and shrimp chimichurri. 

It’s definitely Fall at Marlin Moon. Offering an incredible Fall menu with dishes such as hot back fin crab dip, tuna nachos, and roasted oysters topped with  lobster cream sauce and chopped lobster, Marlin Moon is a must stop restaurant. Grab a seat at the bar for a front row to oyster shucking, Marlin Moon has some of the best raw oyster varieties in Ocean City, Maryland. Asher oysters are usually a staple on their raw bar menu along with other local fresh options. 

This Fall a special menu offers entrees such a a decadent bouillabaisse clams, shrimp, mahi mahi, and lobster in a red sauce. Along with a seared prime rib new york strip topped with shrimp and fresh chimichurri sauce. 

If you’re looking for sweet desserts, Marlin Moon is offering local pies by Delvecchios bakery. The peach pie and chocolate silk are on their top requested.

Starting with the 2nd annual Bronco Beach Bash brought a number of new and older Ford Bronco vehicles into Ocean City from on October 18th and 20th.  This event included a beach parade, sand course, vendor village and show & shine events.  Presented by LiveWire Media & Events.

Heading over to Berlin, this seasonal event was held on Saturday, October 19th.  This special event included various German food and desserts, craft beer, vendors, kid activities, and music by The Edelweiss Band and The Dunehounds.  A large turnout for this main street event!

A week in review of pictures in Ocean City, Maryland

 

Let’s look at ten pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between October 11th and 18th.  This past week featured several special events in and around Ocean City. These included 2024 Endless Summer Cruisin,  OC Beach Ultimate Frisbee championships, Harbor Days At The Docks, and set up for 2024 SunFest (next week).  Of course, then we have several shots from around Ocean City.

The Endless Summer Cruisin event brings thousands of custom vehicles to Ocean City.  Running from October 10th to 13th this event is dedicated to all thing’s cruisers, muscle cars, hot rods, trick trucks, and other eye-catching vehicles.  Following these vehicles are thousands of others who wish to just see and experience these special vehicles.  The event occurs at the OC Convention Center and Inlet Parking Lot, but also includes a morning boardwalk parade which is a must see for most attendees.

OC Beach Ultimate Free competitions

This year thirty-two teams competing for the OC Beach Classic XI – 2024.  This year’s winner was Evil RVA for Richmond, Virginia.  These fast-paced games bring many to see this exciting game on the beach in Downtown Ocean City.

Harbor Days At The Docks

Also, a great family event which highlights the maritime heritage of the Ocean City area and history.  This event was located at the west Ocean City marina.  Maritime exhibits, children’s activities, nature displays, vendors, food, beverages and music made for a great event on this beautiful sunny day.

Northern Lights

A special occurrence for many; viewing of the northern lights!  This rare phenomenon allowed many to experience these natural factors in and around Ocean City.  For many, it was the first time for them to see these lights.

There’s nothing better than starting your Ocean City day with a great sunrise; and we had that throughout our ten mile of beach fronts. Pick your favorite spot and photo away.  Some of the best pictures are when clouds are present, too!

But in Ocean City tradition, great sunsets remain continue.  Throughout the resort one could find opportunities for nice sunset pictures.

Always some of the best Ocean City pictures are of the boardwalk; even when there’s hardly anyone present such as a late midweek night.

Hunter full moon

This week’s Hunter full moon brought an enlarged moon to Ocean City and some great views.  Below is a pictured full moon over Blu Restaurant and Raw Bar at 2305 Philadelphia Avenue.

Sunfest 2025 Music Lineup

With over 30 food vendors, free live entertainment on two stages, and a huge selection of arts and craft vendors, there is something for everyone at Ocean City’s Sunfest. Enjoy four days filled with something for all the family, including over 250 vendors, live music, craft beer garden, artistic demonstrations, gourmet food and beverages, family hayrides on the beach and kids activities.  

Remember, admission to Sunfest is FREE!

There will be 4 days of FREE music at Sunfest 2025.

With 2 stages for live music, there will be over 20 groups performing during Sunfest, and many different styles of music to listen and dance to including rock, R&B, country, and fusion!   All performances are free. You can also enjoy music on either stage from the new location of the Shore Craft Beer Garden.  Enjoy a cold beer from EVO, Big Truck, or Burley Oak – and help downtown Ocean City in the process.  Proceeds benefit OCDC.org.
