Winterfest of Lights has opened for 2022, and it will not disappoint! Northside Park comes alive as the sun goes down, and it sparkles where ever you look. Like the last couple of years, this year it’s a walk through event. But don’t let that put you off. On the contrary, this way there are less lines, you can go at your own speed, stop to take in your favorite view, take pictures in front of special displays, double back to see it all again, and really get in the holiday spirit. A great experience for people of every age including families, couples, friends, old and young. Children, literally squeal with delight, walk with eyes open wide, or sit back to enjoy the view in strollers and wagons. Older guests stroll around, taking the opportunity to rest on the many picnic tables dotted around the park, and some use the scooters available for rent at the entrance to the park. The walk itself is not that long, no more than half a mile, no more than walking round Walmart, to be honest. But it is so much more fun, you can’t help but smile as you take in the twinkling, shimmering light displays, and listen to the seasonal music playing throughout the park. So grab your hat, gloves, and comfy shoes, and head over to Northside Park for Ocean City’s Winterfest of Lights, you will not be disappointed!

Ocean City has endured a dramatic shift in weather this season — from an unseasonably soggy spring to an intense early-summer heat wave, followed by a cascade of thunderstorms.
A Brutally Wet Spring
From April through May, rainfall totals in Ocean City were well above average. Spring typically sees around 13 rainy days monthlybut this year brought persistent storms, flash flooding across the region between May 13–18and soggy conditions that repeatedly dampened the mood. As a result, many major beach and boardwalk events were rained out, hotel occupancy took a hit early in the season, and tourism numbers were noticeably lower — after all, beaches aren’t enticing when it’s constantly downpouring.
Heat Dome Hits in Early July
The only place people could cool off was bay or ocean.
Starting in late June, a heat dome gripped the Mid‑Atlantic region, driving temperatures into the 90s and bringing oppressive humidity. Ocean City reflected this trend: day‑time highs surged to the high‑90s°F, turning resorts into refuge zones. Freezer treats became local lifelines — Dumser’s ice cream lines stretched long, and Loves Lemonade outlets were overwhelmed as beachgoers flocked to cool off.
Swimming pools — from The Cambria by the Route 50 bridge to Hyatt Place on the boardwalk — were bursting at the seams. On the water, boats anchored at sandbars saw non-stop plunges into the ocean. Everyone was eager to beat the heat — from hotel pools to salty bay dips.
Post‑July 4 Storm Surge
Swimming and boating were among the top activities to keep cool this July 4th weekend.
Just after Independence Day, late‑evening summer storms swept in throughout the late evening hours. Fueled by the tropical remnants of Storm Chantal, these fierce systems brought intense showers, frequent lightning, gusty winds (up to 70 mph in nearby areas), and localized flooding. The atmosphere shifted abruptly: one minute you’re sipping lemonade under clear skies, the next a thunderstorm is roaring in.
Looking Ahead
Even though summer storms are not ideal, they can bring the occasional rainbow.
Over the next week, expect a humid mix of sun and afternoon storms. Highs remain in the low‑ to mid‑80s°F, punctuated by thunderstorm chances, especially late afternoons . It’s classic Ocean City summer — idyllic sunshine with dramatic stormy interludes.

Ocean City, MD – (July 7, 2025): Ocean City welcomed hundreds of thousands of residents, property owners, and visitors over the July 4th holiday weekend, celebrating America’s independence and the Town’s 150th Anniversary with beautiful weather, sunny beach days, and two spectacular fireworks displays. While the weekend was filled with joyful moments, a series of isolated incidents required a swift and coordinated response from public safety personnel, temporarily shifting attention from the otherwise outstanding holiday experience.
“This weekend showcased both the very best and the most challenging aspects of hosting a major holiday in our beloved beach town,” said Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan. “While the vast majority of visitors came to Ocean City to enjoy the holiday responsibly, law enforcement responded to several social media driven pop-up gatherings that drew large crowds of young adults, and in some cases juveniles, who appeared to come with the sole intent of causing disruption and chaos. These events, though isolated, placed an enormous strain on public safety resources and resulted in behavior that was both disappointing and unacceptable. I am incredibly proud of the dedication shown by our police, fire, EMS, dispatchers, beach patrol, and public works crews, each of whom played a critical role in keeping our Town safe.”
Throughout the holiday weekend, the Ocean City Police Department, Fire Department, and Emergency Services operated at full staffing, prepared for the demands of a peak-season celebration. In addition to the full complement of OCPD officers, Ocean City was grateful for the immediate support of its allied law enforcement partners, including the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland State Police, the Berlin Police Department, the Ocean Pines Police Department, and the Pocomoke Police Department. Their presence and professionalism helped ensure a coordinated and effective response throughout the Town.
“Our first responders showed strength, professionalism, and resilience during a weekend that tested every corner of our public safety network,” said City Manager Terry McGean. “These types of gatherings are not welcome in Ocean City. We are committed to taking a firm stance against disorderly conduct and will continue to work with our partners to deter this behavior, enforce our laws, and protect our community.”
The Ocean City Fire Marshal’s Office also played a vital role, conducting pre-holiday fire inspections and overseeing the safe execution of both fireworks displays. Meanwhile, 911 dispatchers managed an exceptionally high volume of calls with calm precision, helping to coordinate resources and support across departments.
Despite the challenges, the professionalism and resilience of Ocean City’s frontline employees stood out. Public Works crews worked long hours to keep the Town clean and welcoming. From sunrise to the final burst of fireworks, Ocean City remained committed to ensuring a safe and memorable experience for all.
“We recognize the concern from our residents and visitors who witnessed or experienced these incidents firsthand,” added Mayor Meehan. “We share that concern and will continue to assess the weekend in partnership with public safety officials and use those insights to strengthen planning and response efforts. As we move through the peak summer season, the Town remains committed to proactive enforcement, strong community partnerships, and ensuring Ocean City remains a safe and welcoming place for all.”
OCEAN CITY, MD — July 4, 2025 —The Art League of Ocean City invites youth ages 6 to 17 to participate in “Kids Paint OC,” an opportunity for children ages 6-17 to paint outdoors in July. This is the third year for the event, sponsored by the Art League, the Worcester Co. Arts Council, and John Sisson.
The “Kids Paint OC” event is part of the Art League’s annual “Artists Paint OC Festival,” now in its 20th year, happening Aug. 13-17, 2025. Any young person ages 6 to 17 is eligible to enter a “plein air” painting they create during the month of July 2025.
Austin Schisler 6 – Most Blessed Sacrament School. 1st Place
Plein Air painting goes back to the French Impressionists when artists wanted the freedom to paint “in the open air,” which is what “en plein air” means. July’s young plein air artists will paint outside in the resort or surrounding area and capture what inspires them.
“We hope any young person interested in the arts will take up the brush and make a plein air painting,” Rina Thaler, Art League Executive Director, said. “Then come to the Arts Center on August 17 to see their worked displayed and experience what it’s like to have their art exhibited.”
Kallie Queen 10 – Seaside Christian
There is no fee to enter, and participants will receive a free “Kids Paint OC” t-shirt while supplies last. The youth artists must paint from July 1-31, 2025 and paint outdoors. The finished paintings must be turned into the Ocean City Center for the Arts, 502 94th St. bayside, by Aug. 7, 2025.
Paintings must be original works of art, painted with acrylics, oil paints, pastels, watercolors, pencil, ink and wash, or other traditional media. Maximum size is 8×10-inches. Young artists may use their own materials, or free painting kits are available at the Arts Center, while supplies last. Digitally-created artwork is not eligible. Limit one entry per young artist.
Aria Lehner 10 – Redeemer Classical Christian
All of the entries will be displayed on Sunday, Aug. 17 from noon-3 p.m. at the Arts Center. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges, and more than $500 in cash prizes will be awarded.
More information is available at OCart.org/kids-paint-oc-a-plein-air-event/or by calling the Arts Center at 410-524-9433.
The Art League of Ocean City is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting artistic expression and appreciation for the creative arts in our communitythrough education, exhibits, scholarship, programs, and community art projects. For six decades, Phillips Crab House stood as a beloved institution in Ocean City, Maryland—an essential part of summer vacation traditions and seaside cuisine. Born in 1956, Brice and Shirley Phillips opened a humble crab shack at 21st Street and Philadelphia Avenue, using surplus crabs from their Hooper’s Island processing plant. What began as a small takeaway transformed over the years into an English Tudor‑style restaurant sprawling across an entire city block, boasting ten dining rooms, five full kitchens, and seating for up to 1,400 guests.
Old Time Elegance
A black and white photo of Phillips Crab House in the 70’s. (Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum)
The building’s interior was a whimsical wonder—a maze of mosaic lights, carousel horses, antiques, and even repurposed treadle‐sewing‐machine tables. Shirley oversaw a menu of Eastern Shore classics—crab cakes, crab soup, oyster dishes—based on family recipes and fresh Chesapeake crab meat.Brice’s steamers complemented Shirley’s elegant dishes, creating a blend of down‑home comfort and refined seafood.
Wide Spread Expansion
As the restaurant grew, so did the Phillips empire. They opened additional Ocean City locations—like the Bayside Cantina—and ventured beyond into Baltimore’s Harborplace in the 1980s, the Southwest Waterfront in D.C., and later travel plazas, casinos, and airports.
Friends, Family, Food
The staff at Phillips learned not only restaurant skills but made life long friends and memories.
But perhaps the restaurant’s most profound legacy lies in the people who worked there. Seasonal employees—fondly called “Phillips boys and girls”—received not just jobs but mentorship and, often, onsite housing. Many college students found their first taste of independence here and returned summer after summer, ascending to bussers, servers, and even full‑time managers. The Phillipses treated their staff as extended family—Shirley addressing them warmly regardless of age, and Brice and Shirley’s own children growing up amid the hustle behind the lines
A Memorable Menu
Generations of vacationers recall the dessert bar, soft‑serve and seafood buffet—the upstairs Endless Crab Feast and prime rib—while the downstairs offered full crab‑house service. Family gatherings, first dates, college reunions, milestone celebrations—they all happened under that iconic roof.
In December 2021, after 66 seasons, the Phillips family announced the sale and permanent closure of the original location. The property carried millions of memories for locals and tourists alike, and the closure acknowledged the staff’s decades of dedication.Plans to convert the downtown site into housing—briefly transforming into Union Chesapeake Seafood House in 2022—were approved, removing even more traces of the brand: signage was scrubbed, and the building eventually became student housing for J1 workers.
Meanwhile, the “uptown” location—often called Bayside or Philly Avenue North—had already been torn down, a casualty of shifting tastes and changing real estate . By 2018, that branch had shuttered, leaving only the flagship until time caught up.
Today, Phillips Seafood continues elsewhere: in Baltimore, airports, casinos, and international markets. Yet no matter how far the brand stretches, its foundation remains a crab shack that became a family legacy, binding generations of workers and vacationers with memories of biscuits, steamed crabs, colorful dining rooms—and shared life lessons.
In Ocean City, the crab house is gone—but for many, its spirit lives on in stories of late‑night seafood feasts, summer love, staff traditions, and the infectious energy of a community-built restaurant. Those memories, and the people who created them, are what truly made Phillips Crab House a cornerstone of Maryland’s coastal cuisine and culture.
