The strong wave and wind action this week created some significant sand cliffs on the downtown beaches this week.  One of our Oceancity.com readers referred to these as SCARPs, a term that I was not familiar with, but will be in the future. It is a term meaning “very steep bank or slope.”

Often Heard, Seldom Seen: Chuck Will’s Widow

There’s no mistaking that back and forth chant of the Chuck Will’s Widow (Antrostomus carolinensis). If you’ve ever taken an early morning walk on Assateague before first light, chances are you’ve heard their throaty call ushered from deep within the thickets of bayberry shrubs. It is unmistakable, catchy, and their call seems to arrive on que with the heat and humidity of summer.

Don’t be fooled, the call is often confused with that of the whippoorwill. Larger than the whippoorwill, Chuck Will’s exhibit nocturnal activity and forage primarily on large insects that are most active at dusk and dawn, though they are known to take smaller birds as well, like warblers, sparrows, and even bats! Exceptionally large mouths and specialized feathers known as rictal bristles help to funnel their diet choice directly into their mouths.

A member of the nightjar family, Caprimulgidae, Chuck Will’s have short legs and bills, but a rather impressive wingspan of 23-26 inches and exhibit excellent camouflage. The Chuck Will’s nesting characteristics are rather primitive, with eggs that are laid on flat ground, typically on leaves and pine needles.

Photo By Alan Murphy / BIA / Minden Pictures
Photo By Alan Murphy / BIA / Minden Pictures

Delmarva resides as one of the more northern reaches of the Chuck Will’s habitat range during the warmer months. In the winter, Chuck Wills may be found in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

A unique bird, to some the Chuck Will’s call is a defining characteristic of Assateague Island. Often heard and seldom seen, the Chuck Will announces its presence here during those times when all else has settled down and gone quiet. Long may it remain that way.

Local Brewery Tour

burley oak brewery
An ice cold Sea Heathen or Black Cherry Seltzer will warm you up on a cold winter’s night.

Ocean City offers several local brewery experiences. Start in Berlin at Burley Oak Brewery with a Kook Double IPA. I like to stick to seltzers- a light and crisp black cherry. Head back towards Ocean City and make a stop at Sinepuxant Brewery for their Captain’s Lager or a rotating menu of fruity seltzers. I highly recommend the blueberry! Just before the Route 50 Bridge on the left, Fin City Brewery has a White Marlin Pale Ale that is very popular- especially during The White Marlin Open. If you like heavier, Black Fin would be a great pick. Finish your tour at Seacrets, a prohibition style era tour with tastings of rum- and don’t forget to punch your time card!

Enjoy a Seafood Dinner

A spicy lobster stir fry with jasmine rice from The Captain’s Table.

Winter is the best time to find that quiet intimate dinner in Ocean City. Several places close up for the season, but more restaurants are open than you think. Try the lobster stir fry from The Captain’s Table, fresh shucked oysters from Marlin Moon, or the perfect pasta pairing from Sello’s. If you’re looking for more of a bar scene, Pickles Pub is opened 365 days a year! Their bacon wrapped sea scallops are a hit. And I dare someone to try and beat my high score on the basketball game.

Outlet Shopping

Tanger Outlets
Treat yourself to some shopping at the Tanger Outlets or check off some of you Christmas list.

Get a head start on your Christmas shopping…or just treat yourself! With the new addition on Burlington Coat Factory Tanger Outlets just outside the Route 50 Bridge has something for everyone. J Crew, Marshalls, Ulta, and Hallmark are a few of my favorites! Get hungry while you’re shopping? Me, too! Visit Mione’s Pizza for their incredible slices. They even have a gluten free crust option! Tip: Look for the cute train that runs along the ceiling around the dining area.

Cinema Experience

Experience a top of the line cinema experience at Flagship Movies in West OC.

Dogfish Head: Official Sponsor of Ocean City’s Let’s Get Lit Beer Festival This Weekend

0
lets get lit in ocean city costumes
Let’s Get Lit kicks off the holiday season in Ocean City, Md.

The Let’s Get Lit Beer Festival in Ocean City, Maryland, promises to be an unforgettable celebration of craft beer, local culture, and fun, with Dogfish Head Brewery stepping in as the official sponsor. This partnership between the beloved craft beer brand and the festival is an exciting blend of creativity, community, and exceptional beer. We had the chance to speak with Nick Izzo, Senior Brewery Representative for Dogfish Head, to dive deeper into the brewery’s involvement with the event and what attendees can expect.

A Natural Fit for Dogfish Head

costume contest hosted by DJ Bigler at the Let's Get Lit Shore Craft Beer and Fun Fest
Costume contests and a visit from Santa are just a few surprises at Let’s Get Lit Craft Beer Festival.

Nick Izzo has a unique connection to the Ocean City area, as he resides in nearby Ocean Pines and grew up in Bethany Beach, Delaware. His local roots make him an ideal representative for Dogfish Head’s partnership with the Let’s Get Lit Beer Festival.  Izzo explains that the sponsorship allows Dogfish Head to engage with the community and showcase their commitment to local craft beer culture.

What Does Being a Sponsor Mean?

dogfish head canned crush
Small samples of the Dogfish Head canned cocktails will be offered to all festival goers.

As the official sponsor, Dogfish Head’s role is to elevate the festival experience by providing festivalgoers with high-quality, off-centered beers and cocktails, along with exciting giveaways and prizes. “We are able to showcase some of the highest quality product in the market while having some fun to go along with it,” says Izzo. This sponsorship allows Dogfish Head to engage directly with attendees while offering a taste of their most popular brews.

What to Expect from Dogfish Head at the Festival

Dogfish is the 2024 lets get lit in ocean city sponsor
Dogfish is the 2024 Let’s Get Lit in Ocean City sponsor. You can win a 2 night stay at the Dogfish Inn as well as other great prizes.

At the Let’s Get Lit Beer Festival, Dogfish Head will be offering a range of drinks, including some of their flagship off-centered beers and specialty cocktails. Izzo highlights the brewery’s winter seasonal beer, Covered in Nuggs, which will be available at the event. Covered in Nuggs is a much-loved brew that fans are excited to see become available nationally in 2024. A piney, citrusy IPA brewed with Citra, Simcoe, Amarillo, and Centennial hops, this beer delivers a “sticky heap of lupulin goodness,” Izzo says. For those looking for something a little different, Dogfish Head will also be offering their new Sun Cruiser, a refreshing Ready to Drink Vodka Iced Tea made with real iced tea and vodka for a smooth, easy-drinking experience.

While festival attendees can’t purchase Dogfish Head beer to take home from the event, they can find the brewery’s products at local retailers wherever beer is sold. For those seeking a special gift, Izzo suggests Dogfish Head’s higher ABV options, which are available at the brewery and are perfect for gift-giving during the holiday season.

Bringing the Holiday Spirit to the Festival

lets get lit in Ocean City revelers
Let’s Get Lit is set for December 7th hosted by Shore Craft Beer.

When it comes to the holiday season, Dogfish Head’s winter seasonal, Covered in Nuggs, is the perfect brew to get you into the festive spirit. As part of their 2024 Art Series, this beer will be complemented by beautifully designed labels from Methane Studios, adding a creative touch to both the beer and the event experience.

Off-Centered Vibes for Let’s Get Lit

Let's Get Lit in Ocean City - a party full of fun at the Cambria Hotel
Let’s Get Lit in Ocean City – a party full of fun at the Cambria Hotel

Izzo sums up Dogfish Head’s approach to the festival with one phrase: “Off-Centered!” Dogfish Head has always embraced creativity and fun in their beer and events, and they’re bringing that same energy to the Let’s Get Lit Beer Festival. With a variety of unique beers, cocktails, and a festive atmosphere, Dogfish Head is sure to make the event even more special for all who attend.

The Let’s Get Lit Beer Festival promises to be an exciting event, and with Dogfish Head as the official sponsor, attendees can expect a truly off-centered experience filled with craft beer, holiday cheer, and good times.

Let’s look at several pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between November 19th thru 25th.  The big upcoming special event this week is the start of Winterfest of Lights.  Most of this week was setting up for these light displays throughout Ocean City.  On Thursday, November 21st was the official kickoff lighting ceremony at Northside Park.

Special events

2024 Winterfest of Lights is in its 32nd year!  This event will run from November 21st to December 31st.  This event is centered around Northside Park in north Ocean City.  It is a walk-through event that will feature many holiday settings and thousands and thousands of lights.  From Nov. 21st to December 22nd this event will be open from Wednesday through Sunday.  From December 23rd to December 31st, it is open daily.  It opens at 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm.  This event is managed by the Town of Ocean City and requires the hard work of many Town departments.

Pictures around Ocean City

Even with the colder weather moving in, we always love our Ocean City beach and boardwalk.  Less shops are open as we move further into the “second season”, but on a sunny weekend day, you will see some boardwalk shops open during the late morning and early afternoon hours.  But nothing beats a less crowded walk on the beach or a bike ride down the boardwalk.

One special happening this past week was the Beaver Moon that appeared as a super moon, meaning it appeared larger and brighter than a normal full moon.  It peaked on Friday, November 15th but its impact was still felt during Ocean City high tide hours, especially with some flooding of streets along the bayside in downtown Ocean City.

Another special picture this week was the large flock of cormorants we say along the Ocean City bayside.  This are very social and fascinating birds who are found along our coastlines.

PROJECTS UNDERWAY IN DOWNTOWN OCEAN CITY

PROJECTS UNDERWAY IN DOWNTOWN OCEAN CITY

OCPD substation on Somerset Street
OCPD substation on Somerset Street

Following up on our past two articles on new development and renovation going on in downtown Ocean City, we wish to provide you an update on other new projects underway in the downtown area.  There are several site plans that have been approved over the past two years, but we just wish to highlight those projects that have “broken ground”; meaning that are already underway or just started to be constructed.  As many know, an approved site plan does not necessarily mean a project will be built.  Many other factors come into play, particularly with market conditions and financing feasibility. These highlighted new projects include a variety of uses and two are public projects.

So, let’s feature these projects that are underway in the downtown area of Ocean City.  You will note that several of these projects include new seasonal housing!  Let’s start with projects to the south and work our way northwards.

104 Worcester Street –

Dumsers Employee Housing
Dumsers Employee Housing

The small weekly rental building on the north side of Worcester Street, just west of S. Baltimore Avenue, was demolished, and a new three-story structure has been permitted and under construction. These two residential uses with a townhouse look will be used for seasonal housing for employees of the Dumsers Dairyland.  The property is owned by Dumsers and will have first floor parking, too.  This project will provide thirty-nine (39) beds for these seasonal employees.   Adjacent to this project is the Dumsers Dairyland office and its ice cream manufacturing facility.  The project is expected to be completed for the 2025 summer season.

400 S. Baltimore Avenue

OCPD substation on Somerset Street
OCPD substation on Somerset Street

This multiuse project, on the southwest corner of S. Baltimore Avenue and Somerset Street, is being constructed by the Town of Ocean City for its new Ocean City Police Department facility. It is being referred to as OCPD Downtown Substation. The previous use was a public parking lot owned by the Town of Ocean City.  This new facility will contain first-floor office and public lobby space for OCPD employees as well as a garage for storage and repair for use for its bicycle unit.  The second floor will be for OCPD office, training, interview, and meeting space.  The third floor will be housing for city employees for seasonal use.  This third floor will provide housing for sixteen (16) City employees.  The building will have an elevator.

The parking will be located in the rear of the building.  A local nonprofit organization, the Ocean City Development Corporation, is charged with redeveloping downtown Ocean City and has partnered with the Town in acquiring grant funds and financing of this new facility.  The OCDC will be responsible for managing the residential uses on the upper floor once completed.

The private buses that have used this Somerset Street location for drop off/pick up of its customers from area hotels and campgrounds will continue to use this location. The bus shelter will remain.  There will also be public restrooms available.

This project is estimated to be completed for Summer 2025.

St. Louis Avenue and 3rd Street –

As part of the next and final stage of redeveloping this popular Bayside Park at 3rd Street is the construction of new administrative space and restrooms adjacent to the OC Skate Bowl. This impressive renovated park improvements were completed in this past year and opened for the 2024 summer season.  These park improvements included new playground equipment, inclusive playground with a communication board, music hut, basketball courts, tennis/pickleball courts, and renovated skate bowl improvements.   The newly improved park also provides access to the bayside boardwalk.  This park used to be known as the Downtown Recreation Complex. Along the Bayside Boardwalk is an ideal location for fishing and crabbing.  And a fishing permit is not required for this area.

This new construction building will contain public restrooms on the first floor.  Also on the first floor will be a “skate-in” skater lounge area which will provide shade for park skaters.  On the second floor there will be offices that are accessible by stairs and an elevator.  An observation deck will also be accessible for parents and other interested onlookers.  The construction of this building is expected to be completed for Summer 2025.

101 16th Street

Hyatt West rendering
Hyatt West rendering

Underway for the past year has been the Hyatt West Hotel project located on the west side of Baltimore Avenue along the south side of 16th.  This new hotel will consist of sixty-three (63) hotel units. About fifty percent of these hotel units will include Queen Studios which will include a private kitchen. This new hotel will also contain an outdoor pool and lounge space. It is expected to be completed in Spring 2025.

Guests of this hotel will have access to all of the amenities at the main hotel (Hyatt Place Ocean City/Oceanfront) located directly east on the boardwalk.  Such amenities include meeting space, indoor & outdoor pools, bars, interior veranda and more.

2004 Philadelphia Avenue

Phillips House Phil. Avenue facade

This project, named Phillips House, was actually completed and opened for use in the summer of 2024. We wanted to bring this project to your attention as it was not referenced in our past two updates, but does carry significant impact for Ocean City for this past year and future years.   This project was the former popular Phillips Crab House Restaurant.  The Phillips Restaurant closed in 2021. This three-story building has been converted into multi-family housing units that served seasonal employees last summer.  Most of the exterior look of the building remained unchanged.

Phillips House kitchen and dining area

This building contains 15 multi-family units, containing three- and four-bedroom units as well as a manager’s unit.  This new space served two hundred eighty-seven (287) residents this past summer, most of them foreign students working on a J-1 visa.  The common areas contain a lounge area, laundry facilities, and vending areas. This interior space was fully rebuilt with new plumbing, electric, air conditioning and sprinklers systems.  There is also office space and storage space provided.

At this time, this project is available for off-season leases for a cost of $600 per month per room (See picture containing contact information for such a lease.)  However, the intent is to again to have these units available for seasonal employees in May 2025.

There are plans for the residential units on the east side of this building, as a future redevelopment phase, but a site plan has not been approved to date.

So, until our next update on new development and renovation projects going on in the downtown area of Ocean City.  Enjoy these upcoming holidays!!
