A WEEK IN REVIEW OF OCEAN CITY PICTURES – Week 4 of 2025

Let’s look at several pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between January 18th to January 24th. The week opened with the melting snows of the past weeks, but low and behold, once all this snow was almost melted, we received another inch of snow on the evening of Tuesday, January 21^st.

Demolition of Phillips Beach Plaza

Demolition of the Bo-Con Apartments started this week with the Phillips Beach Plaza hotel and restaurant building expected to begin in near future. These buildings are located along the boardwalk between 13^th and 14^th Streets.

OCPD substation building continues

Located at the southwest corner of S. Baltimore Avenue and Somerset Street, this mixed-use building to contain a police substation, other law enforcement services, and upper flooring housing is expected to be completed for this summer season. This project is a partnership between the OCDC and Town of Ocean City.

The story of the week in Ocean City was not only the snow, but the extreme cold. The coming temperatures look to rise a little. Getting back into the 40-degree range will be a big improvement over the past week.

Although winter is generally slower than the rest of the year for events in Ocean City, there’s always something come up soon. The 26th annual “Life Patrol” Ocean City Blood Drive is set for January 27th through January 29th at the Ocean City Convention Center. This event culminates National Blood Donor Month. Blood Bank of Delmarva’s largest event culminates National Blood Donor Month

OCEAN CITY, Md. – “Make Waves, Save Lives” is the tagline for the Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD)’s 26th annual Ocean City Blood Drive, which will occur on Monday, January 27th, Tuesday, January 28th and Wednesday, January 29th. This drive is traditionally BBD’s largest, and takes place at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center overlooking scenic Assawoman Bay.

The theme for this year’s blood drive is, “Ocean City Life Patrol,” a fun play on the Ocean City Beach Patrol, in homage to the beach town’s beloved lifeguards.

“It’s the biggest blood drive around,” said Blood Bank of Delmarva Account Manager Bryan Shepherd. “Nothing else touches the scope of what it does.”

A WEEK IN REVIEW OF OCEAN CITY PICTURES – Week 3 of 2025

Let’s look at several pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between January 11th to January 17th. On Monday, January 6^th Ocean City received about seven inches of snow. The story of this past week has been much of that snow and now some ice remaining.

At the north-end of the Ocean City boardwalk is the popular “Touch the Spot” sign which if used as a destination marker by walkers and joggers alike. And of course, there is a similar sign at the south-end of the boardwalk.

The January full moon is the first full moon of the new year. This year this full moon appeared on January 13th. It’s called the Wolf Moon because it was thought wolves howled more at this time of year as there was less food being in the middle of the winter. It is also the highest-hanging full moon of 2025 in the Northern Hemisphere and will be in the sky for the longest.

Movies at Midway, Blood Bank of Delmarva to Host National Blood Donor Month Blood Drive

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – The Blood Bank of Delmarva continues the celebration of National Blood Donor Month in Rehoboth with their second annual blood drive in partnership with Movies at Midway on Saturday, January 18th. As a thank you for giving the lifesaving gift of blood donation, all donors will receive a free movie ticket.

January is National Blood Donor Month, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and to honor those who have already made a lifesaving contribution. The inaugural National Blood Donor Month was proclaimed by President Richard Nixon and held in January 1970 to acknowledge voluntary blood donors and encourage more individuals to donate for the first time.

“Movies at Midway is part of the community, and we wanted to help out the Blood Bank of Delmarva during a difficult collection time, namely winter,” said Movies at Midway General Manager Brooke Lowe. “We’re happy to provide a venue to BBD and make it convenient for local residents of Rehoboth Beach and vicinity to donate blood. Plus, you get a free movie ticket for your time.”

The winter months present unique challenges for blood donations as family vacations, holiday travel, seasonal illness and inclement weather all contribute to making blood donations less of a priority. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors, but the past few years have brought chronic blood shortages nationwide.

Art League of Ocean City Seeks Votes and Entries for “Global Travel Photo Contest” With $1,000 Grand Prize

OCEAN CITY, MD — Jan. 14, 2025 — The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to vote for their favorite photographs in the Global Travel Photo Contest. Votes are $1 each, and voting will determine who wins the $1,000 Grand Prize, sponsored by the White Marlin Open. Entries into the contest are also still being accepted.

The contest is also a fundraiser for the non-profit Art League. “The Art League of Ocean City is an economic driver, cultural hub, and tourism attraction for the Delmarva area,” Rina Thaler, executive director, said. “The Art League offers a variety of community programs, including free After-School Art Clubs in the public schools in some of the most underserved areas of Worcester County. This contest is another effort to raise awareness and funds to support these critical programs, while also celebrating the art of photography.”

It’s not too late to enter travel and vacation photos into the contest, open to all amateur and professional photographers, to vie for the $1,000 Grand Prize. The runner-up will receive a photo retreat opportunity and an Art League membership. The winning entries will also be recognized at the Ocean City Center for the Arts during the free First Friday opening reception on April 4, 2025.

The photographs will be displayed on digital monitors at the Arts Center through April 2025. The Grand Prize winner will also be highlighted at the April First Friday reception, and the artists will have the opportunity to sell their work. Special pieces will be selected to be featured on screens at the White Marlin Open, the World’s Largest Billfish Tournament.

The contest is open to all global travel photography. Artist must be 18 years or older, and submit original artwork created in the past three years and never before shown at an Art League judged show.

An ethereal echo calls through the downy comforter of fog sitting atop the Atlantic. The loons have returned, like family flocking home for the holidays.

They arrive dressed casually in shades of cozy grays and winter whites, taking advantage of the opportunity to relax their wardrobes. During the summer months they spend up north, they must sport formal breeding tuxedos of striking black and white patterns. Here we welcome their subdued frosty hues, matching the laid back beach vibe of the region. Common loons (Gavia immer) breed on tranquil, remote freshwater lakes in Canada and the northern U.S., but we have the opportunity to spot them in their winter range close to shore along ocean coasts and in bays and estuaries. Observing a loon, sitting low on the water in solitude, is always a delight during this season of darkening days when interactions with nature have dwindled.

Common loons are anything but “common” in the water. They are swift underwater swimmers that use their feet as paddles to powerfully propel their lithe bodies through the water column while fishing. The roof of their mouth and tongue are lined with sharp projections to keep slippery prey from escaping. Loon bones are solid, which make the birds less buoyant and able to dive more effectively. Once they disappear beneath the water’s surface, their heart slows down to conserve oxygen so they can spend more time hunting on a single breath.

These agile divers are also efficient flyers and have been recorded migrating at speeds of more than 70 mph. Despite excelling in the water and air elements, we all have our shortcomings, and loons are no exception. They move awkwardly on land due to the location of their legs further back on their body. This positioning aids them in the water, but hinders them on land. Therefore, they typically only go ashore to mate and incubate their eggs.

Common loons put family first. They are monogamous, and a pair will usually stay bonded for about 5 years. They have one brood of chicks per year. Loons take a modern approach to parenting and share their parental duties equally, both partners feeding and tending to their young. Loon chicks like to ride in style on top of their parents’ backs. Perhaps one of the most adorable scenes in nature is the sight of fuzzy loon chicks cruising around the lake on mom or dad’s back.

Only two or three days after hatching, chicks can dive and swim underwater. However, it will take ten to eleven weeks before they can fly. When looking for parenting or family advice, forget the self-help books and simply observe a family of loons.

These stoic visitors will return north in the spring, but for a few sacred months during late fall and winter, we have the privilege of enjoying the season of the loons.

A WEEK IN REVIEW OF OCEAN CITY PICTURES – Week 2 of 2025

Let’s look at several pictures taken in Ocean City, Maryland over the past week between January 4^th to January 10th. We don’t get much snow in Ocean City, but when it does snow, it’s a special time for pictures.

Last weekend started with sun and them some early morning light snow and frost. Here’s some pictures of this light and heavy snow on boardwalk and bayside.

Prior to Monday’s heavy snow fall, Eastern Shore residents, Sebastian and Melissa jumped into the cold Ocean City ocean!!

But on Monday, January 6^th Ocean City received about 7 inches of snow. Local schools were closed for the week.

Art League of Ocean City welcomes new resident studio artists for 2025

OCEAN CITY, MD — Jan. 8, 2025 — The Art League of Ocean City welcomes two new resident studio artists to the Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94^th St. bayside.

The Arts Center is home to 12 resident artists who permanently display their creations within four open studio and gallery areas.

“We welcome Beth Deeley and Justin Casanova to our family of resident studio artists,” Rina Thaler, executive director for the Art League, said. “What’s wonderful about the studio exhibits is that you get to see a body of work by each artist, rather than one or two pieces, so you can experience their overall visions and skills. The resident artists have their work displayed for all of our guests to enjoy, the entire time the Arts Center is open and free for all.”

Beth Deeley has moved her fiber artwork into Studio C. She was born and raised in New Hampshire and moved to Ocean City in college and stayed, achieving a B.A. degree in Communications from Salisbury University.

“I am full-time creative person,” Deeley said. “I connected with the Art League through their online artist registry and things just took off from there.”

“I’ve always been drawn to fiber art in the form of macrame and crochet. It wasn’t until 2018 that I started … floor loom weaving. Weaving is a meditative slow-down for me. You need two hands, so you have to let go of everything you bring with you to the loom, literally. Weaving is freeing for me because there’s no set design, and it allows me to be daring and take chances in a way I might not otherwise do in everyday life.”

The photography of Justin Casanova of Lewes, De. is now showing on the walls of Studio D at the Arts Center. The artist continues to prefer to shoot film rather than switch to digital.

“In my photos I always try to pay homage to the place I am in, while also striving to create an ethereal feel to the scene,” he said. “Shooting with film helps me achieve this by enabling me to slow down and put care and consideration into my compositions. Also, film cameras are so fun to create with and that is the most important thing.”

The Art League of Ocean City is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the visual arts to the community through education, exhibits, scholarship, programs and community art projects. Snow Day in Ocean City Md today!

It seems like it’s been a long while since we have had any measurable snow in Ocean City but we are getting it today!

Whether you like snow or not, when it arrives to our beach town it’s always a little special. Today’s Ocean City accumulation is expected to reach about six inches, with most arriving in the early morning hours, turning to a wintery mix, and then to rain as the temperatures exceed thirty-two degrees. But then we may get additional snow tonight! And a chance for more next weekend!!

But let’s look at some Ocean City pictures of the snow from this morning. And just so you know, most local governments and school districts in our area have announced closures today including the Town of Ocean City.

Streets

The Town of Ocean City was out early this morning clearing the major roads of snow and then getting to the secondary roads next. However, residents and visitors have been advised to stay inside given these conditions. Even the bus service has been halted for today given these wintery conditions.

Boardwalk

Nothing better for visitors to see and experience then snow on the Ocean City boardwalk. Few people were seen on the boardwalk this morning but as seen in the snow tracks there were several about walking their dogs.

The Beach

Actually, there is one thing that tops the boardwalk on snow days, and that’s a snow beach! Many people have never seen snow on a beach but we have a great day today. And to experience the shoreline as the ocean waves hit on the snow is something to behold.

So, if you haven’t got outside today for a short walk, do so to experience this pleasure of this season while it’s here. Of course, the clearing of one’s vehicles and shoveling of one’s driveways may often offset this seasonal pleasure.

Ocean City marks a milestone in 2025 – its 150th anniversary! To commemorate this historic occasion, Ocean City is rolling out the red carpet with a year-long celebration, kicking off with a splash at the Atlantic General Penguin Swim on New Year’s Day. Get ready for “150 Days of Celebrations,” featuring exciting new events and twists on beloved traditions like Springfest, Sunfest, and Winterfest. Plus, history buffs can delve into the city’s rich past with special exhibits at the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum.

Ocean City’s skyline is getting a stylish new addition. The Hyatt Place West Hotel, rising on 16th Street, is set to open its doors in Summer 2025. The Ocean City Boardwalk is getting a fresh new look – and a friendlier voice! In 2025, say goodbye to those outdated signs on the Boardwalk and hello to a more welcoming vibe. The resort is replacing its 30- to 40-year-old signage with updated designs and warmer messages. Even the “no” signs – like those for smoking, pets, and bikes – are getting a makeover with a softer, more encouraging tone. It’s all part of Ocean City’s commitment to making everyone feel right at home!

What else is going on in Ocean City in 2025?

Prepare for a deli experience like no other! Rosenfeld’s is back, and they’re bringing their legendary Jewish deli menu to the Shmagel’s Bagels location on 82nd Street. While you’ll still be able to enjoy Shmagel’s bagels and coffee, get ready for Rosenfeld’s famous breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings, including their mouthwatering corned beef, pastrami, Reubens, and knishes. “Rosenfeld’s Jewish Deli Featuring Shmagel’s Bagels” opens its doors on May 1st!

Craft Pizza will be joining District 24 and opening up where The Other One Brewing was located, next to The Ember’s Restaurant on 23rd Street.

Jolly Jellyfish is coming to the Plaza Condominium 98^th Street replacing the Jungle Bar.

Warren’s Station in Fenwick Island has been sold! But not to worry, the new owner is a former employee, and she hopes to keep the feel of the place, while modernizing it, creating a bar, and calling it The Station!

Get ready for more on-the-water adventures in 2025! The Sail Alyosha and the OC Bay Hopper are expanding their presence with a new slip in Ocean Pines. This means more opportunities to catch a ride with these unique vessels, whether you’re looking for a scenic cruise, a thrilling sailing experience, or a convenient way to explore the coastal bays. And rest assured, the Sail Alyosha will still be gracing Ocean City’s waters, offering its signature coastal cruises.

Tony’s pizza at the Boardwalk on N. Division St. is now under new management! Will it still be called Tony’s Pizza?

Spain Wine Bar founder Peter Elias is to take over the former Cowboy Coast on 17th Street, transforming the old nightclub into a fine dining restaurant with special event space.

Ocean City said goodbye to Roses department store earlier, in June 2024. The 17-acre property is set for a major transformation in 2025. The site will be subdivided into four lots, with the former Roses building making way for a brand-new ACME supermarket. This new ACME will replace the existing one, which will then be demolished, paving the way for further development.

Changes to Events in Ocean City Md

Ocean City is always bustling with new events and happenings, and 2025 is no exception. Here are some of the new things you can look forward to:

Ocean City is turning up the volume in 2025 with a brand-new music festival. Get ready to rock at the inaugural Boardwalk Rock, a two-day celebration of all things rock ‘n’ roll taking place May 17-18. The star-studded lineup includes legendary acts like Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Nickelback, and Shinedown, promising a weekend of headbanging and epic guitar solos. This addition to Ocean City’s event calendar is sure to draw music lovers from far and wide, so book your tickets and hotel rooms early and get ready to rock the Boardwalk!

Springfest, one of the most popular four-day festivals in Ocean City, will now be held April 24-27, 2025, instead of its traditional May dates.

Cruisin’ Ocean City has also been moved earlier in the year, from May 15-18 to May 1-4, 2025.

Ocean City Air Show will return to its original June dates, after last year’s move to August. This year’s date for the Ocean City Air Show is June 14-15!
