OCEAN CITY, MD — July 25, 2025 — The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to a free opening reception on First Friday, August 1, 2025, 5-7 p.m., at the Ocean City Center for the Arts, 94th St. bayside.

The Thaler Gallery hosts “Out and About,” a collaboration between married painters Kirk McBride and Lynne Lockhart of Berlin, Md.  “Our facts may be the same, but our truths are different,” Lockhart said.

“An exhibit like this shows what extraordinary, national talent we have on the Eastern Shore,” Rina Thaler, executive director of the Art League, said. “Lynne’s and Kirk’s artwork is of a very high caliber, a testament to their dedication and constant practice of their craft as well as to their very individual and unique visions.”

McBride developed an interest in American painting as a young man when he first saw the work of Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, and N.C. Wyeth. After college at the University of Maryland, he won Best in Show at the first local art show he entered, encouraging him to make painting a lifelong pursuit. McBride is known for the interaction of light and shadow in his images. Travels beyond the East Coast to the deserts and mountains have inspired his paintings of aspen trees, rock formations, and rusty trucks.

Lockhart is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists. Her quiet observation of the natural world, both wild and tame, provides her with endless painting possibilities. “No matter the subject, the application of paint to canvas is the easy part,” Lockhart said. “The real challenge for me is the interpretation of what I see. That is the translation from subject to canvas. It is this translation through the artist that makes the difference in painters.”

The annual Beverly Bassford Memorial Juried Group Show continues on the walls of the Sisson Galleria through August 15, showcasing 60 pieces of art juried by Christy Cox, Operations Coordinator at Salisbury University Art Galleries.

Studio E features two special installations by Bethany Resort Furnishings, transforming the space into design examples using the Pantone Color of the Year: Mocha Mousse. Visitors can walk through the space, chat with designers for inspiration, and receive a coupon for furnishings.

Wall sculpture by John Kovach hangs in the Schwab Spotlight Gallery during August. “My work reflects my belief that sculpture should engage some magic,” he said. “It does so by encouraging the viewer to look beneath the surface appearance of a piece and experience the social relationships and human connections embodied in an abstract piece of steel.”

Alicia Rappold exhibits her felting creations in the Artisan Showcase in the Felber Gift Shop in August.  A lifelong crafter, her love of felting began with making wet felting soaps for her grandchildren’s school fair, then making 2D animal spirit badges for the kindergartners, and progressing to 3D figures.  Rappold often teaches classes on felting at the Ocean City Arts Center.

The artwork of Aria Islam continues showing in the Burbage Staircase Gallery at the Arts Center. Islam is a 21-year-old artist born and raised in Ocean City. Inspired by her coastal hometown, her work reflects the textures, colors, and quiet magic of life by the sea, and blends natural elements with whimsical storytelling. As a young emerging artist, Islam continues to develop a voice rooted in authenticity, curiosity, and her deep connection to the world around her.

Art shows at the Art League’s satellite galleries continue in August. Sally Miller exhibits her work at the Coffee Beanery on 94thSt. and Coastal Hwy. Jessica Schlegel shows her artwork in the Princess Royale lobby, 9100 Coastal Hwy.

Complimentary beverages for the First Friday reception are sponsored by PKS Investments.

Exhibits at the Arts Center run through August 30, with the exception of the Beverly Bassford Show that ends on August 15 for the installation of the “Artists Paint OC Festival” paintings. More information is available at OCart.org or by calling 410-524-9433.

The Art League of Ocean City is a non-profit organization dedicated to artistic expression and appreciation for the creative arts in our community through education, exhibits, scholarship, programs, and community art projects. Funding is provided in part by the Worcester County Arts Council, Maryland State Arts Council, and the National Endowment of the Arts, organizations dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.

Fresh Squeezed Orange Crush Trail in Ocean City, MD Offers $5 Orange Crushes

0

Ocean City is serving up something special this summer—the Orange Crush Trail! It’s a partial Boardwalk partial Coastal adventure where participants can sign up (via oceancity.com/trails/) free of charge for 8 $5 Orange Crushes at participating bars. We decided to work our way uptown! We live in midtown so it also gave us time to stop at home and let the dog out before heading back out on the trail! (Shout out to, Baby Tuck! @tucktucklab)

But First…Let’s Talk About The Crush

orange crush trail ocean city maryland $5 crush
Seacrets is 1 of 8 participating restaurants,

The Orange Crush cocktail was invented in 1995 at Harborside Bar & Grill in West Ocean City, combining orange vodka, triple sec, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and a splash of lemon-lime soda. And boy are we happy they did! Fun fact: It was officially named Maryland’s state cocktail, effective June 1, 2025.

What To Eat at Each Bar

orange crush trail ocean city maryland $5 crush
Pair your orange crush with crab dip and a quesadilla at Pit n Pub.

Eating and drinking go hand in hand. And it helps pace your fun. Here’s a list of restaurants and what we recommend to eat!

  1. The Cambria – We got there just as their breakfast service was ending so we didn’t eat here. But we did see someone eating some yummy looking avocado toast and a BLT croissant. And we thought, now all they need is an orange crush.
  2. Crawl Street Tavern – Let’s be honest. No one is eating healthy during any type of drink crawl, including the Orange Crush Trail. So our pick to start would be wings, onion rings, and chicken tenders to start the day… no better brunch with an orange crush!
  3. Guido’s Burritos (Boardwalk) – I had a Shrimp Taco Salad that was so so good! And Tim had a steak burrito with fries- yes I teased why he would get the most American side as opposed to the rice and beans…but he did have an orange crush in hand so he was forgiven.
  4. Pit n Pub – The couple next to us ordered the crab dip with soft pretzel nuggets and the quesadilla that looked absolutely too picture perfect to eat! All they needed was an orange crush- so we showed them out to get on the trail on their phones!
  5. Guido’s Burritos & Tequila Cantina – My go to here is always the chorizo nachos that’s large enough to feed an army…an army of one (yes that’s me!) along with an orange crush.
  6. Finnigan’s Irish Pub & Eatery (Princess Bayside Beach Hotel) – Unfortunately since Covid, Finnigan’s does not serve food. But they did have a single pool table that begged to be played and a juke box that fed our soul as we played a little 8 ball. We were told they plan to open their kitchen service back up in the near future. And until then they occasionally have food trucks set up outside. If you’re wondering who won 8 ball, it was not me. I blame it on the 6th orange crush of the day.
  7. Seacrets – I mean where can you go wrong at Seacrets for food? No where! Their jerk wings are always a fan favorite. I would also like to add their mussels with garlicy French bread…we like bread when drinking orange crushes.
  8. The Current Bar and Grill (Princess Royale) – They had gluten free rolls! So the Italian Classic would be my pick with salami, prosciutto, and pepperoni paired with an orange crush.

Trail Tips for Easy Crush Cruising

orange crush trail ocean city maryland $5 crush
Find the perfect crush partner and enjoy a day touring Ocean City.
  • Sign up ahead on the official OC trail site (oceancity.com/trails/)
  • Pace yourself: 8 drinks at $5 each is great, but spread them over days
  • Be careful with the timer on the coupon. Each bar coupon once clicked has a ten minute timer for you to redeem. Obviously bars will be flexible when they’re bustling.
  • Stay hydrated & safe: Alternate water between drinks, enjoy Ocean City’s  bus along Coastal Highway, or use ride share for safe traveling
  • Use rideshare when needed. Download Uber and Lyft ahead of time to save the frustration later.
  • Collect memories: Snap bar selfies and tag @oceancityphotos and #orangecrushtrailoc! Your photo might be featured in our stories!

Pros and Cons of Crush Trailing!

  • Pro: All of the crushes were delicious! And funny enough they all tasted slightly different. Some had a bit more soda, some oranges were sweeter than others, and some bartenders may have been a little heavy handed in a good way. But we agreed that they all tasted like summer in Ocean City, Maryland!
  • Pro: Everyone knows it’s important to eat while you’re drinking. And every place had something delicious! Between sliders and crab drip, taco salads and bbq, anyone on the orange crush trail is able to find something to their liking.
  • Pro: Just about every place we went to had a great Ocean City View! The Cambria had the view of the Route 50 Bridge AND shade! (I don’t know about you, but this summer heat is hitting me real hard this year for some reason!) Guido’s Burritos has the view of the boardwalk and the ocean! The Current (Princess Royale) had a huge upper deck bar that overlooked the sea of orange umbrellas that just hit home for me.
  • Pro: We only used one crush coupon at each place, which helped to pace the fun…if you know what I mean. And with eating at the stops, that helped, too!
  • Con: Because we did the crush tour in ONE DAY (yes…all 8 bars), we were capital E exhausted! (One of us more than the other but I won’t day who.) We began around 11 am and stopped around 4. We were determined to see if it was feasible in a day. And the answer is yes, but 5 out of 10, do not recommend. What I do recommend would be getting your trail coupons and mapping it out for a long weekend experience. Don’t rush it like we did. Stay, relax, and enjoy yourselves.

Crush Trail Take Aways

White Marlin Open: The Sleeping Giants of Ocean City, Maryland

If you listen closely, you can almost hear it. The fee-fi-fo-fum of the sleeping giants of Ocean City’s White Marlin Open. Slowly waking- they hum their diesel engines and vibrate tension of crews chasing one of sportfishing’s ultimate prizes. These Vikings, Spencers, and Hatteras are restless and anxiously waiting for their week to peak.

Giant History

white marlin open, ocean city maryland
Sleeping in their slips, these giant boats will be returning the from Canyons bringing in what they dream of- that elusive white marlin.

The White Marlin Open, otherwise known as the “world’s largest and richest billfish tournament,” is more than a competition—it’s a high-stakes, deep-sea fairy-tale story that transformed this beach town into the white marlin capital of the world.

A Giant Success

white marlin open, ocean city maryland
The sleeping giants of Ocean City, waiting for their week to come.

First held in 1974 with just 57 boats, the tournament has grown into an international event, attracting hundreds of boats and millions in prize money. The stakes are high: in 2023, a record $10.5 million was awarded, with a single white marlin weighing in at just over 77 pounds netting $6.2 million. But it’s not just about the money. For captains and crews, the White Marlin Open is the magic bean that if teased just right, will produce golden outcomes.

Giant Loads of Prep Work

white marlin open, ocean city maryland
Crew of Bar South and Contender shows off their baiting skills.

Weeks before the first lines are dropped, preparation begins in earnest. Crew triple-check their GPS systems, plotting known hot spots and scanning sea surface temperature charts, looking for the perfect canyon to climb towards. Engines are serviced, reels are re-spooled, and dozens of custom rigs are laid out ready to do their magic.

And then there’s the bait—mackerel and ballyhoo, the jester of the billfish world. But it’s not enough to simply thread them on a hook. Each one must be twisted and rigged with near-obsessive precision. If it doesn’t dance just right, it won’t mimic a fleeing baitfish. And if it doesn’t mimic a fleeing baitfish, it won’t draw in the mega billfish—blue marlin, white marlin, and tuna—that competitors dream of.

“If you twist it even a little off,” one Ocean City mate explained, “you might troll past a million-dollar fish, and it won’t even blink at your bait.”

Not So Giant Drop

white marlin open, ocean city maryland
Gas can cost boats thousands of dollars before evening beginning fishing!

Despite slightly lower gas prices this year—hovering around $3.90 per gallon, a notable drop from the summer of 2022—the cost of competing remains steep. A single offshore run can burn hundreds of gallons. Multiply that by three tournament days, and many boats will spend thousands just on fuel. Add in entry fees, tackle, crew wages, and charter costs, and it’s not uncommon for a team to invest well over $20,000 before even catching a fish.

Giant Crowds

white marlin open billfish tuna marlin
The White Marlin Open hosted at Harbour Island.

Still, the magical docks of Harbour Island fill up early. Families, fans, and fishing hopefuls line the weigh-in station each evening, watching as giant fish are hoisted and crowds hold their breath as the numbers climb higher and higher on the scale. Kids tower on shoulders, phones are aimed at the scales, and cheers erupt when what seems like fishing royalty swings into view around the bend from Assawoman Bay.

Giant Hopes and Dreams

The White Marlin Open isn’t just a tournament—it’s Ocean City’s proudest week. A bewitching celebration of skill, endurance, and the wild, unpredictable ocean. Captains will climb their proverbial beanstalk that is their bridge. They can smell their victories at the scales. Until then, the giants might still be waking from their deep sleep, but soon, every boat, every bait, every twist and troll is a call to wake for this year’s White Marlin Open.

Sip, Save, and Celebrate: OceanCity.com Launches the OC Orange Crush Trail

Maryland’s favorite cocktail just got its moment in the spotlight—and now there’s a fun new way to enjoy it all summer long.

Harborside bar and grill
The orange crush was invented at the Harborside

Thanks to a last-minute legislative triumph in Annapolis, the Orange Crush is officially Maryland’s State Cocktail—and OceanCity.com is raising a glass with the launch of the OC Orange Crush Trail, a new digital experience that helps visitors sip their way through Ocean City with exclusive $5 Orange Crushes at participating bars and restaurants.

The Orange Crush Becomes Maryland’s Official Cocktail

In April 2025, Delegate Wayne Hartman of District 38C led the charge to give this beloved beachside beverage the recognition it deserves. His original bill, HB 1001, gained traction in the House but initially stalled in the Senate. In a clever move, Hartman amended a separate bill naming chromite as the state mineral—securing the Orange Crush’s official status just two minutes before the legislative session ended.

“This gives new meaning to last call,” said Hartman, toasting the final vote.

The bill took effect June 1, 2025, just in time for peak summer season.

The Origins of an Ocean City Icon

The Orange Crush was first mixed at Harborside Bar & Grill in West Ocean City in 1995. This now-iconic cocktail is made with orange vodka, triple sec, a freshly squeezed orange, and a splash of Sprite—a refreshing, citrusy drink that’s become a staple of the Ocean City experience.

Though Delaware also recently claimed the Orange Crush as its official cocktail, Hartman made it clear: “Virginia is for lovers—but Maryland is where you had your first crush.”

Introducing the OC Orange Crush Trail

To celebrate this milestone, OceanCity.com is launching the OC Orange Crush Trail, a FREE digital trail that guides visitors to the best places in Ocean City to enjoy an Orange Crush—each for just $5.

Here’s How It Works:

  • Anyone can download the trail for free by entering their email address—no hotel booking required!

  • Just click the download button below to get started.

  • Each participant can download one OC Orange Crush Trail per email address

  • The trail allows ONE $5 Orange Crush per participating location

  • Once a coupon is redeemed, it can’t be reused

Guests who book through the OceanCity.com reservations system at https://hotels.oceancity.com will also be invited to choose a free trail as part of their booking confirmation.  You will also be offered many other trails, coupons and discounts in a link that is emailed to you with your booking confirmation.

Pair the OC Orange Crush Trail with our Coastal Craft Crawl, which offers $5 local craft beers at participating breweries and bars, and you’ll be sipping like a local all week long.

Why It Matters

The OC Orange Crush Trail is more than just a fun summer promotion—it’s a celebration of Maryland’s culture and a boost to local bars, restaurants, and tourism. By combining legislative pride with a savvy travel incentive, OceanCity.com is helping visitors drink like locals, explore more of Ocean City, and support the businesses that make this resort town so special.

Photo Friday Contest Winner July 17th 2025

Thank you to everyone who took part in our Photo Friday contest this week! We received so many fantastic shots capturing the essence of Ocean City. We saw babies experiencing the beach for the first time and toddlers celebrating their first hole-in-one. There were impressive photos of a fisherman’s first tuna, and charming pictures of kids enjoying ice cream and popcorn on the Boardwalk. The new “Smile” sign on the Boardwalk was a popular spot for great photos, and of course, the ever-present seagulls made an appearance! We also loved seeing the rainbows after the frequent rain showers, boogie boarders riding the waves, and bonfires lighting up the beach. The Assateague Island ponies were featured, along with many wonderful moments of families generally having a great time spending time together in Ocean City. Here are some of this weeks photos from our Photo Friday contest, and get ready to submit your own photos in next week’s contest which starts tomorrow on our Facebook page.

This week’s randomly selected winner of 2 FREE passes to Nick’s Mini Golf is Lauren Legum Sloan for this great photo of a large family group enjoying the Ocean City beach in seriously stylish matching swimwear!  Congratulations Lauren!

Celebrating 150 Years of Ocean City: Iceland Golf- A Land of Ice Melted Away

0

In the midst of towering rides, bustling boardwalk attractions, and expansive parking lots that dominated the southern tip of Ocean City, Maryland, there was a unique landmark that captured the imagination of visitors—Iceland Golf, a quirky miniature golf course that operated near the Ocean City inlet.

A Cool Concept by the Ocean

Iceland Golf, Ocean City, Maryland
Iceland Golf may be but a memory, oh but what a memory it was!

Iceland Golf opened during a period when Ocean City was transforming from a quiet fishing village into a booming vacation destination. At the time, amusement parks and mini-golf were gaining popularity nationwide, offering affordable entertainment for families flocking to the beach. Iceland Golf stood out because of its Arctic-themed design, which was an unusual but charming contrast to the summer heat and ocean breezes.

The course featured imaginative obstacles, painted icebergs, playful polar bear statues, and frozen-themed décor that delighted generations of visitors. With its quirky charm and prime location near the boardwalk’s southern end, Iceland Golf became a must-visit attraction for vacationers throughout the mid-20th century.

Years of Family Fun

For decades, Iceland Golf remained an Ocean City staple. It was part of a wave of mini-golf courses that gave Ocean City its reputation as a hub for family entertainment. While other courses popped up throughout town, Iceland’s location near the inlet and boardwalk gave it a unique edge—offering beachgoers an easy way to cool off with a game after a day in the sand.

The course was more than just a game; it was a piece of Ocean City nostalgia. Parents who played there as kids often returned with their own children to share the experience. Its brightly painted obstacles and fun, Arctic vibe made it a favorite spot for vacation photos and memories.

The Closing of an Era

Iceland Golf, Ocean City, Maryland
Settled in the downtown district, now adults remember climbing the iceberg to make a long putt.

As time went on Ocean City was rapidly expanding. The demand for larger, modern attractions and the need for additional parking at the inlet began to reshape the landscape. Sadly, Iceland Golf could not withstand the pressure of progress. The course closed permanently to make way for newer buildings and parking lots.

The melting of Iceland Golf was supporting the boardwalk’s growing popularity and events like Sunfest and Springfest. While the change was necessary to handle the town’s booming tourism, it marked the end of an iconic chapter in Ocean City history.

What Stands There Now

Today, if you stand at the southern end of the boardwalk, near the inlet, it’s hard to imagine the whimsical course that once drew laughter and competition. The space is now part of a bustling downtown serving as a practical but far less playful use of prime real estate.

Though Iceland Golf is gone, its memory lives on in the stories of those who played there and in the vintage postcards and photos that occasionally surface online—frozen in time like the Arctic theme it was.

J1 Programs Truly Change Lives and Mine is One of Them

0

Have you ever thought how it would be to just pick yourself up, fly across the world, and immerse yourself into a brand new country, work 12 hour days, and know no one along the way? Well that’s exactly what J1 students do here in Ocean City. We were lucky enough to meet an convince Viktoriya to write about her story. Thank you Viktoriya Moore for your insiders perspective!

Brave

j1 students
Sunsations, Starbucks, restaurants and bars- most Ocean City businesses have welcomed J1 students to work.

“Back in 2021, I was in my third year of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, frantically preparing to write my thesis in English. I was under pressure and painfully aware of how much I needed to improve my second language over the summer. At the time, it felt impossible.
I had always known about the Work & Travel program, but it seemed too far-fetched. Just
imagine: flying across the ocean, completely alone, to spend three months in a new culture and language, not knowing a single soul. The idea was terrifying. So I did it. Looking back, I still can’t believe how brave I was as a young student. The airport staff were the first native English speakers I ever spoke to in person. That alone was overwhelming. The flight to the U.S. lasted nearly fifteen hours with two layovers, giving me plenty of time to worry and second-guess everything. But once I landed, there was no turning back.

The Point of Exhaustion

j1 students
J1 students often work more than one job to get maximum experience here in Ocean City.

Before arriving in Ocean City, I had no idea it was possible to work multiple jobs. I didn’t even know it was common, let alone encouraged as a smart way to make the program financially sustainable. But in no time, I joined the hustle – working as a barista in the mornings and a shop assistant in the afternoons. Most J1 students did the same. Despite the physical exhaustion, this period was full of life, fun and learning.

Why Do Americans Use So Much Ice?

Is it true? Do Americans use alot of ice?

We were all there chasing the same thing: experience, language fluency, and a summer we’d never forget. I was improving my English every day, making friends from all over the world, and immersing myself in American culture. I remember being surprised at how much ice Americans use in every drink, and I couldn’t believe how intense the air conditioning was indoors.

Down Time

j1 students
Ocean City is fairly close to several day trip locations such as Philly and DC.

On weekends, I traveled to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. Exploring the
East Coast became part of the adventure thanks to Ocean City’s convenient location. And
somewhere along the way I fell in love with the country.

I Forgot What?!

That summer didn’t come without challenges. I had to navigate a new country, work long hours and fix serious mistakes, like forgetting the original DS-2019 form, the most important document for the program. I panicked, but managed to resolve it on my own. Each setback taught me resilience, quick thinking, and how to trust myself under pressure.

An Ending to New Beginnings

j1 students
The Work and Travel Program opens doors to many J1 Students.

When the summer ended, I flew home a different person: stronger, more confident, with a new perspective and life-long friends. I completed my degree, but more importantly, I reimagined my future. English was no longer just a subject, it had become a key. A key that unlocked real people, real places, and a version of myself I hadn’t known before.
That transformation inspired me to help others access the same kind of life-changing
experiences that the J1 program had given me. That’s how I became an English teacher.”
