Art League of Ocean City Releases Commemorative Poster Celebrating 150 Years of Ocean City

New Collector’s Poster Celebrates Ocean City’s 150th Anniversary

150th poster for Art League of Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, MD – The Art League of Ocean City is excited to announce the release of a special collector’s poster, “The Art of Ocean City,” commemorating the town’s 150th anniversary. This beautiful poster also celebrates the 20th year of the “Artists Paint OC” plein air festival, showcasing eight iconic Ocean City scenes painted by talented plein air artists over the years.

Measuring 18×24 inches, the poster is available in two editions. The unframed edition sells for $15 and fits standard-size frames. For a more exclusive option, the Art League offers a deluxe framed edition, limited to 150 numbered prints. This deluxe edition is embellished with a commemorative gold seal reading “Ocean City Maryland 1875-2025” and is available as a gift to anyone who donates $150 or more to the nonprofit Art League. Your contribution is tax-deductible.

“This commemorative poster is just gorgeous,” said Rina Thaler, executive director of the Art League. “The eight paintings displayed show everything we love about Ocean City, including the beach, the fishing pier, the Boardwalk, and the bay marshes. Whether you’re a summer resident looking for art for your condo or a local who loves the Town of Ocean City and its storied history, this is a poster you’ll want to collect. We published these posters in a limited quantity to ensure they’ll be collectors’ items to be cherished for generations.”

“The Art of Ocean City” posters can be purchased at the Ocean City Center for the Arts (502 94th St. bayside), on the Art League’s website at OCart.org, or by calling 410-524-9433. They will also be available at various local shops. Shipping is available at an additional cost.

Sip, Save, and Celebrate: OceanCity.com Launches the OC Orange Crush Trail

Maryland’s favorite cocktail just got its moment in the spotlight—and now there’s a fun new way to enjoy it all summer long.

Harborside bar and grill
The orange crush was invented at the Harborside

Thanks to a last-minute legislative triumph in Annapolis, the Orange Crush is officially Maryland’s State Cocktail—and OceanCity.com is raising a glass with the launch of the OC Orange Crush Trail, a new digital experience that helps visitors sip their way through Ocean City with exclusive $5 Orange Crushes at participating bars and restaurants.

The Orange Crush Becomes Maryland’s Official Cocktail

In April 2025, Delegate Wayne Hartman of District 38C led the charge to give this beloved beachside beverage the recognition it deserves. His original bill, HB 1001, gained traction in the House but initially stalled in the Senate. In a clever move, Hartman amended a separate bill naming chromite as the state mineral—securing the Orange Crush’s official status just two minutes before the legislative session ended.

“This gives new meaning to last call,” said Hartman, toasting the final vote.

The bill took effect June 1, 2025, just in time for peak summer season.

The Origins of an Ocean City Icon

The Orange Crush was first mixed at Harborside Bar & Grill in West Ocean City in 1995. This now-iconic cocktail is made with orange vodka, triple sec, a freshly squeezed orange, and a splash of Sprite—a refreshing, citrusy drink that’s become a staple of the Ocean City experience.

Though Delaware also recently claimed the Orange Crush as its official cocktail, Hartman made it clear: “Virginia is for lovers—but Maryland is where you had your first crush.”

Introducing the OC Orange Crush Trail

To celebrate this milestone, OceanCity.com is launching the OC Orange Crush Trail, a FREE digital trail that guides visitors to the best places in Ocean City to enjoy an Orange Crush—each for just $5.

Here’s How It Works:

  • Anyone can download the trail for free by entering their email address—no hotel booking required!

  • Just click the download button below to get started.

  • Each participant can download one OC Orange Crush Trail per email address

  • The trail allows ONE $5 Orange Crush per participating location

  • Once a coupon is redeemed, it can’t be reused

Guests who book through the OceanCity.com reservations system at https://hotels.oceancity.com will also be invited to choose a free trail as part of their booking confirmation.  You will also be offered many other trails, coupons and discounts in a link that is emailed to you with your booking confirmation.

Pair the OC Orange Crush Trail with our Coastal Craft Crawl, which offers $5 local craft beers at participating breweries and bars, and you’ll be sipping like a local all week long.

Why It Matters

The OC Orange Crush Trail is more than just a fun summer promotion—it’s a celebration of Maryland’s culture and a boost to local bars, restaurants, and tourism. By combining legislative pride with a savvy travel incentive, OceanCity.com is helping visitors drink like locals, explore more of Ocean City, and support the businesses that make this resort town so special.

Photo Friday Contest Winner July 17th 2025

Thank you to everyone who took part in our Photo Friday contest this week! We received so many fantastic shots capturing the essence of Ocean City. We saw babies experiencing the beach for the first time and toddlers celebrating their first hole-in-one. There were impressive photos of a fisherman’s first tuna, and charming pictures of kids enjoying ice cream and popcorn on the Boardwalk. The new “Smile” sign on the Boardwalk was a popular spot for great photos, and of course, the ever-present seagulls made an appearance! We also loved seeing the rainbows after the frequent rain showers, boogie boarders riding the waves, and bonfires lighting up the beach. The Assateague Island ponies were featured, along with many wonderful moments of families generally having a great time spending time together in Ocean City. Here are some of this weeks photos from our Photo Friday contest, and get ready to submit your own photos in next week’s contest which starts tomorrow on our Facebook page.

This week’s randomly selected winner of 2 FREE passes to Nick’s Mini Golf is Lauren Legum Sloan for this great photo of a large family group enjoying the Ocean City beach in seriously stylish matching swimwear!  Congratulations Lauren!

Celebrating 150 Years of Ocean City: Iceland Golf- A Land of Ice Melted Away

0

In the midst of towering rides, bustling boardwalk attractions, and expansive parking lots that dominated the southern tip of Ocean City, Maryland, there was a unique landmark that captured the imagination of visitors—Iceland Golf, a quirky miniature golf course that operated near the Ocean City inlet.

A Cool Concept by the Ocean

Iceland Golf, Ocean City, Maryland
Iceland Golf may be but a memory, oh but what a memory it was!

Iceland Golf opened during a period when Ocean City was transforming from a quiet fishing village into a booming vacation destination. At the time, amusement parks and mini-golf were gaining popularity nationwide, offering affordable entertainment for families flocking to the beach. Iceland Golf stood out because of its Arctic-themed design, which was an unusual but charming contrast to the summer heat and ocean breezes.

The course featured imaginative obstacles, painted icebergs, playful polar bear statues, and frozen-themed décor that delighted generations of visitors. With its quirky charm and prime location near the boardwalk’s southern end, Iceland Golf became a must-visit attraction for vacationers throughout the mid-20th century.

Years of Family Fun

For decades, Iceland Golf remained an Ocean City staple. It was part of a wave of mini-golf courses that gave Ocean City its reputation as a hub for family entertainment. While other courses popped up throughout town, Iceland’s location near the inlet and boardwalk gave it a unique edge—offering beachgoers an easy way to cool off with a game after a day in the sand.

The course was more than just a game; it was a piece of Ocean City nostalgia. Parents who played there as kids often returned with their own children to share the experience. Its brightly painted obstacles and fun, Arctic vibe made it a favorite spot for vacation photos and memories.

The Closing of an Era

Iceland Golf, Ocean City, Maryland
Settled in the downtown district, now adults remember climbing the iceberg to make a long putt.

As time went on Ocean City was rapidly expanding. The demand for larger, modern attractions and the need for additional parking at the inlet began to reshape the landscape. Sadly, Iceland Golf could not withstand the pressure of progress. The course closed permanently to make way for newer buildings and parking lots.

The melting of Iceland Golf was supporting the boardwalk’s growing popularity and events like Sunfest and Springfest. While the change was necessary to handle the town’s booming tourism, it marked the end of an iconic chapter in Ocean City history.

What Stands There Now

Today, if you stand at the southern end of the boardwalk, near the inlet, it’s hard to imagine the whimsical course that once drew laughter and competition. The space is now part of a bustling downtown serving as a practical but far less playful use of prime real estate.

Though Iceland Golf is gone, its memory lives on in the stories of those who played there and in the vintage postcards and photos that occasionally surface online—frozen in time like the Arctic theme it was.

J1 Programs Truly Change Lives and Mine is One of Them

0

Have you ever thought how it would be to just pick yourself up, fly across the world, and immerse yourself into a brand new country, work 12 hour days, and know no one along the way? Well that’s exactly what J1 students do here in Ocean City. We were lucky enough to meet an convince Viktoriya to write about her story. Thank you Viktoriya Moore for your insiders perspective!

Brave

j1 students
Sunsations, Starbucks, restaurants and bars- most Ocean City businesses have welcomed J1 students to work.

“Back in 2021, I was in my third year of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, frantically preparing to write my thesis in English. I was under pressure and painfully aware of how much I needed to improve my second language over the summer. At the time, it felt impossible.
I had always known about the Work & Travel program, but it seemed too far-fetched. Just
imagine: flying across the ocean, completely alone, to spend three months in a new culture and language, not knowing a single soul. The idea was terrifying. So I did it. Looking back, I still can’t believe how brave I was as a young student. The airport staff were the first native English speakers I ever spoke to in person. That alone was overwhelming. The flight to the U.S. lasted nearly fifteen hours with two layovers, giving me plenty of time to worry and second-guess everything. But once I landed, there was no turning back.

The Point of Exhaustion

j1 students
J1 students often work more than one job to get maximum experience here in Ocean City.

Before arriving in Ocean City, I had no idea it was possible to work multiple jobs. I didn’t even know it was common, let alone encouraged as a smart way to make the program financially sustainable. But in no time, I joined the hustle – working as a barista in the mornings and a shop assistant in the afternoons. Most J1 students did the same. Despite the physical exhaustion, this period was full of life, fun and learning.

Why Do Americans Use So Much Ice?

Is it true? Do Americans use alot of ice?

We were all there chasing the same thing: experience, language fluency, and a summer we’d never forget. I was improving my English every day, making friends from all over the world, and immersing myself in American culture. I remember being surprised at how much ice Americans use in every drink, and I couldn’t believe how intense the air conditioning was indoors.

Down Time

j1 students
Ocean City is fairly close to several day trip locations such as Philly and DC.

On weekends, I traveled to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. Exploring the
East Coast became part of the adventure thanks to Ocean City’s convenient location. And
somewhere along the way I fell in love with the country.

I Forgot What?!

That summer didn’t come without challenges. I had to navigate a new country, work long hours and fix serious mistakes, like forgetting the original DS-2019 form, the most important document for the program. I panicked, but managed to resolve it on my own. Each setback taught me resilience, quick thinking, and how to trust myself under pressure.

An Ending to New Beginnings

j1 students
The Work and Travel Program opens doors to many J1 Students.

When the summer ended, I flew home a different person: stronger, more confident, with a new perspective and life-long friends. I completed my degree, but more importantly, I reimagined my future. English was no longer just a subject, it had become a key. A key that unlocked real people, real places, and a version of myself I hadn’t known before.
That transformation inspired me to help others access the same kind of life-changing
experiences that the J1 program had given me. That’s how I became an English teacher.”

“Greene” with Envy! The Original Greene Turtle Wins Best of Ocean City: Sports Bar and Wings

Ocean City has voted, and it’s official — The Original Greene Turtle has clinched the coveted title of Best Sports Bar (and wings!) in the Best of Ocean City Awards. A true staple of the community since 1976, this classic, neon-lit tavern has captured the hearts — and appetites — of locals and tourists alike for nearly five decades.

A Local Legend

the original greene turtle, ocean city maryland
Located uptown, The Original Greene Turtle is the place for wings and sports.

Located at 11601 Coastal Hwy, The Original Greene Turtle isn’t just a bar — it’s a tradition. With nearly 50 years in the game, it proudly holds the title of the oldest sports bar in Ocean City. What started as a humble 1,600-square-foot English-style pub with just peanuts and a single draft beer has transformed into a full-service bar and restaurant with a reputation that stretches far beyond Coastal Highway.

Founders Mike Holden and Phil Anthony opened the doors in 1976, but it was former employees-turned-owners Steve Pappas and Tommy Dickerson who helped grow the vision into what it is today. Despite the growth, the bar has stayed true to its roots — loyal to the nostalgic ambiance and warm hospitality that customers have known and loved for generations.

Open Year-Round, Open to All

the original greene turtle, ocean city maryland
Winner of 2025 Best of Ocean City- Wings

Unlike many seasonal hotspots in OCMD, The Original Greene Turtle is open all year, including many holidays. Whether it’s the height of summer or a quiet winter night, you’ll find friendly faces and cold drinks from 11am to 2am (May–Sept) and 11am to 12am (Oct–April).

Why the Turtle Wins

the original greene turtle, ocean city maryland
Voters made their voices heard- Winner of 2025 Best of Ocean City- Wings

So, what sets this sports bar apart from the rest?

It starts with the history and the people. Families who discovered the bar decades ago now bring their kids — and sometimes even grandkids — to enjoy the same atmosphere they once did. Many of the staff have been there for 30–40 years, including legendary bartender Denny Ferry, with longtime team members Jean Taylor and Karen Connolly continuing to serve up both drinks and charm. It’s this multi-generational connection, both with employees and guests, that keeps people coming back.

Then there’s the sports atmosphere. With 70+ TVs, The Original Greene Turtle is a haven for fans — showing everything from local games to national tournaments across all major sports networks and packages. Memorabilia from the Ravens, Orioles, lacrosse teams, and more deck the walls, creating an immersive and energetic vibe.

Fun fact? The Greene Turtle was the first in Ocean City to stream ChiveTV, and they now also offer Keno and live standup comedy every Thursday evening in summer (showtimes at 8 or 10pm).

Award-Winning Wings and Elevated Bar Fare

the original greene turtle, ocean city maryland
Delicious and fun- The Original Greene Turtle is an OC icon.

Of course, no sports bar earns “Best Of” status without mouthwatering food, and The Original Greene Turtle delivers with a menu that blends elevated bar food and homemade specialties.

Fan favorites include:

  • Homemade Crab Dip (served with warm pretzel sticks or on top of fries, burgers, and even chicken!)

  • Never-frozen burgers with creative toppings like crab dip

  • Smith Island Cake, Maryland’s official dessert, served by the slice

They’re especially proud of their crab-focused menu items, from the creamy crab imperial to the indulgent Chesapeake burger. And don’t worry — there are gluten-free buns, meatless options like Beyond burgers and crabless crab cakes, and a price range that fits any budget ($10–$40).

With two free parking lots, no outdoor dining to battle the beach winds, and a consistent, reliable presence through every season, it’s no wonder The Original Greene Turtle topped the list this year.

A Toast to Tradition

the original greene turtle, ocean city maryland
When we think green- we think Greene Turtle!

Having spent over 30 years in the industry, they’ve worn just about every restaurant hat there is—from dishwasher to manager—and that hands-on passion is now poured into every bite served at Pit N Pub. What started as a single location 15 years ago has grown into a five-location BBQ empire, with the OC spots leading the pack.

Being emersed in a world beyond your imagination, Old Pro takes you places you’ve never been.

Old Pro Golf first opened its doors in 1963, bringing a new kind of miniature golf experience to the Eastern Shore. Now, more than sixty years later, it remains a staple for vacationing families and Ocean City locals. What began as one course has grown into six fully themed courses spread across four convenient locations:

  • 136th Street: Jungle Safari (indoor) & Caribbean Pirates
  • 68th Street: Undersea Adventure (indoor) & Dinosaur Park
  • 28th Street: Renaissance Castle – the only 27-hole course in town
  • 23rd Street: Temple of the Dragons

No matter which you choose, you’re in for a memorable journey through hand-crafted landscapes filled with animatronic surprises, water features, and nostalgic charm.

A Definite Fan Favorite

Old Pro Golf, Ocean City Maryland, putt putt
Water features set Old Pro at the top of the list for fan favorites.

What makes Old Pro Golf stand out among the many mini-golf options in Ocean City? According to fans and management alike, it’s the perfect balance of creativity, convenience, and care.

“Our indoor courses offer a fun escape when it rains—or when it’s just too hot out,” says the team at Old Pro. “Our outdoor courses capture everything you love about summer in Ocean City. No matter the weather, we’re always ready to play.” This flexibility helped secure wins in both major categories: Best Miniature Golf and Best Rainy Day Activity.

And it’s not just about the weather. Every Old Pro course is a visual adventure. Whether you’re navigating a dinosaur jungle, exploring a medieval castle, or putting your way through a sunken sea world, each environment is custom-engineered with hand-sculpted characters, immersive storytelling, and delightful obstacles.

The venues are open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the main season, with complimentary parking at all four locations. Early birds between 9 a.m. and noon can enjoy shorter lines and cooler temperatures—ideal for those wanting to beat the rush.

A Multigenerational Tradition

Old Pro Golf, Ocean City Maryland, putt putt
Who can say they played by a volcano on vacation? Old Pro fans!

Perhaps the most heartwarming part of Old Pro Golf’s success is the loyalty of returning families. “We’ve seen generations come through our courses,” the team shares. “Parents who played here as kids are now bringing their own children. That’s what makes it special.”

Described in five words? Retro, imaginative mini-golf adventure. And it’s a tradition that shows no signs of slowing down.
