Bon Voyage to the Terns!

This missive is from Archer Lamed, the newest staff member at the Maryland Coastal Bays program.  She monitors the nesting coastal waterbirds and is here writing a final update on their coastal birding program.  She talks about the Common Tern, visible inhabitants of our coastal bays who wheel and dive for fish in the waters around Ocean City.  We like to think of them as the fighter pilots of the bird world!  The photos are by Kim Abplanalp.  You can read about Archer’s program on the Maryland DNR site.

Update on a Successful Year from Archer Lamed

Hello all,

This will be one of the final updates this year, and what a successful year it was! We ended the season with 155 Common Tern nests, a total of 181 chicks banded, 91 adults banded, and at least 140 fledglings. Plus 1 American Oystercatcher nest with 1 fledgling. That’s at least 140 new Common Terns added to the population, which for a bird with a declining population is a very nice boost!

The raft is slated to be pulled out of the water in about a week to be safely stored for the winter. The last of the tern chicks have successfully fledged and migration is just around the corner. We visited the raft last week and noticed a number of young Common Terns sitting on the side of the raft, but not a single one was banded! Just like how our fledglings that already left the raft show up on Assateague, fledglings from other colonies move around and some have found our raft. We still have some of our terns using the raft as well as the visitors.

The Common Terns from the raft, as from any Common Tern colony along the Atlantic coast, form large flocks at staging sites after they are done nesting, or earlier if their nests weren’t successful. From these staging sites they will take off out over the Atlantic Ocean and make their way down south to the Caribbean and some will continue on to South America. They most likely make several stopovers before reaching their final destination in October and November, where they will spend the winter sunning themselves on a beach before flocking up once again and heading back up north in April. And hopefully back to the raft!

During the course of the breeding season Kim has taken lots of beautiful photographs to help document the activity on the raft. While Common Terns are graceful birds, she ended up with quite a few rather humorous shots, which I thought we should end the season with. A bit like the blooper reel at the end of a good film. Enjoy!

Often Heard, Seldom Seen: Chuck Will’s Widow

Photo By Alan Murphy BIA Minden Pictures

There’s no mistaking that back and forth chant of the Chuck Will’s Widow (Antrostomus carolinensis). If you’ve ever taken an early morning walk on Assateague before first light, chances are you’ve heard their throaty call ushered from deep within the thickets of bayberry shrubs. It is unmistakable, catchy, and their call seems to arrive on que with the heat and humidity of summer. Don’t be fooled, the call is often confused with that of the whippoorwill. Larger than the whippoorwill, Chuck Will’s exhibit nocturnal activity and forage primarily on large insects that are most active at dusk and dawn, though they are known to take smaller birds as well, like warblers, sparrows, and even bats! Exceptionally large mouths and specialized feathers known as rictal bristles help to funnel their diet choice directly into their mouths.

A member of the nightjar family, Caprimulgidae, Chuck Will’s have short legs and bills, but a rather impressive wingspan of 23-26 inches and exhibit excellent camouflage. The Chuck Will’s nesting characteristics are rather primitive, with eggs that are laid on flat ground, typically on leaves and pine needles.

Delmarva resides as one of the more northern reaches of the Chuck Will’s habitat range during the warmer months. In the winter, Chuck Wills may be found in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America.

A unique bird, to some, the Chuck Will’s call is a defining characteristic of Assateague Island. Often heard and seldom seen, the Chuck Will announces its presence here during those times when all else has settled down and gone quiet. Long may it remain that way.

Enjoy this beach day, but take care

Following the warm and sunny Labor Day Weekend, we’ve had a week of slightly damp and windy weather, but today the sun came out and we had blue skies smiling at us once again. However, due to Hurricane Earl out in the open Atlantic, ocean swells are evident all along the East Coast today and will still be around this weekend, with an increased the threat of rip currents.  So take care if you are on the beach and always swim near a life guard. Here are some photos taken today around 118th Street, showing blue skies, people out enjoying the beautiful Ocean City beach, and the powerful waves.

A Playground Tour of Ocean City, Maryland

Labor Day has come and gone, and beach weather will soon be fading like summer tans. But that can only mean one thing- Fall weather will be upon us. Ocean City in Fall is the perfect time to check out the local playgrounds with the family! Here are some of the OC’s top playgrounds to check out this season.

Northside Park

Location: 200 125th Street and the bay

With its double slides, rock climbing wall, and sliding monkey bars, there is something for everyone in the family. A small covered pavilion with picnic tables is the perfect place for adults to sit and watch their kiddies climb from one end of the sprawling playground to the other.

Northside Park Playground

The Northside Park playground also has a separate play area for the younger ones, with lower slides and climbing equipment for more primary children. Northside Park is the largest outdoor playground in the Ocean City area- and the view can’t be beat!

Ropewalk

Location: 8203 Coastal Highway

Ropewalk Playground

This nautical themed playground, which has tables close by for adult supervision, should not be missed. A spiral slide sits to one side of the playground, while a smaller double slide for younger climbers sits on the other side. Decorated in pirate themed decor, this two story playground even has a shark with a length exceeding ten feet perched on top! While your little pirates are busy warding off intruders, adults can enjoy some corn hole and the ring toss game just outside of the play area- also just a few feet from the bar. Everyone wins here!

Fish Tales

Location: 2107 Herring Way

It’s where Robin Caruso meets Pirates of the Caribbean! If you have younger kids, try to get a table next to the playground because that’s exactly where your kids will want to be. Equipped with a rope bridge and two slides, your kids will feel like they are stranded on an island- and will never want to leave! Don’t miss out on the face painting for the little ones and the air conditioned arcade for your older kids.

Bayside Park and Skate Park

Location: Bay side between 3rd and 4th Street

Bayside Park

This massively wide play area equipped with monkey bars, a chain climbing ladder, climbing bridges, and slides is a little one’s dream come true. This sprawling playground has a large spinning tic-tac-toe board, a helix for climbing through, and overlooks that tower over the large grassy play area. Nestled at the corner of the baseball field and basketball courts, this playground has it all!

Bayside Park

Right next door to Bayside Park, you can’t miss Ocean Bowl Skate Park! A large skateboarding bowl, nicknamed ‘the pool,’ takes up a majority of the area bordered by half ramps and vert ramps. If watching is more your style, climb the stairs to overlook the athletes grind and ollie their way through the maze of the park. For hours and prices, visit https://oceancitymd.gov/oc/departments/recreation-parks/skate-park/.

Little Salisbury Neighborhood Park

Location: 400 94th Street and the bay

Playground

This large and bright playground sits between The Art League of Ocean City and one of the infamous sky blue Ocean City water towers. Sprawling climbing bridges, wide double slides, and an exhilarating tube slide come together along with circular monkey bars to top off the play area. This playground is also equipped with two single swings!

*94th Street Dog Park

Location: 400 94th Street and the bay

Dog Park

Don’t leave out your furry family members! They love the outdoors just as much as you do. The 94th Street Dog Park sits behind Little Salisbury Neighborhood Park and The Ocean City Art League. A membership is needed to access the dog park which is partly shaded for dogs and owners to rest and relax. In addition to shady spots for your furry companions, the park is equipped with a concrete doggie pool where your pets can cool down after running the vast area or even over the obstacle bridge in the far back of the park. Daily passes begin at $10 up to annual memberships of $50 for locals or $100 for visitors. OC Bikefest, Delmarva Bike Week, and the Non-profits that Benefit from these Big Events

The bikes roared into town on September 16th 2021 for Bike Week

Mid September brings cooler temperatures and roaring engines to the Eastern shore.  Delmarva Bike Week and OC Bikefest, the largest motorcycle rally on the East Coast, get started on Wednesday, September 14 with concerts, vendors, parades, official Bikefest merchandise, thrill shows, and alcohol sales.   Why do some people call this huge event Bikefest and others call it Bike Week and who benefits from having this event on the Eastern Shore besides the obvious answer – the event organizers?

OC Bikefest

OC Bikefest is one of many Bikefest events held across the country and is owned by Kathy Micheal based out of Wisconsin.  The OC Bikefest event is based in Ocean City with locations at the Ocean City Inlet, the Ocean Center Convention Center, and at Rommel Harley Davidson.  Wednesday’s concerts featuring Jasmine Cain and Kix are free, but the rest of the music line-up requires tickets and the line-up is BIG:  Disturbed and Jackyl on Thursday, Zac Brown Band and Travis Tritt on Friday and Godsmack and Chenille on Saturday. In addition to these concerts, there are vendors, parades and alcohol sales.  The OC Bikefest website is cross-linked with the Delmarva Bike Week site.

Delmarva Bike Week

Ms. Michael also produces the Delmarva Bike Week event and it looks like tickets to both events are sold together on the same website.  Delmarva Bike Week is a complementary event, in its 20th year, also catering to motorcycle riders with concerts, vendors, thrill performances and more, but is centered in Salisbury at the Shorebirds Stadium.  The concerts include Blister, Brickyard Road, Jeremiah James and Gavin Hades.  There is FREE bike parking.

Alcohol Sales Benefit Non-profits – locally and internationally

Buying beer, twisted tea or a Jack Daniels cocktail may seem like an indulgence to the thousands of attendees, but for the non-profits working the tents and benefiting from the sales, it’s the life-blood of their organizations.  Even the professional bar tenders known as the Gin Gypsies who work this event are organized by an entrepreneur who contributes some of her corporate earnings to non-profits supporting women and children in Guatemala.

The Gin Gypsies come to work each day during OC Bikefest in themed costumes.

The non-profits of OC Bikefest

The Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) and the Ocean City Hotel, Motel, Restaurant Association (OCHMRA) are the only two non-profits working on the alcohol sales during OC Bikefest at the inlet location this year.  The Red Knights, the Ocean Pines Chamber, the Cricket Center and Maryland Capital Enterprises all pay a flat vendor fee to work in the Convention Center, but the rest of the revenue generated by alcohol sales in the Ocean City Convention Center goes directly to their non-profits.

OCDC and the OCHMRA will be handling all the cash-only alcohol sales – no credit cards accepted, so bring lots of cash.  The OC Bikefest organization provides the bar-backs, and the professional bartenders known as the Gin Gypsies, the brainchild of Meghan Tarmey who also started the Caddy Girls organization seen on Shark Tank.  Some of the proceeds from Meghan’s businesses goes to non-profits focused on impoverished and orphaned youth.  You can learn more about Meghan and her Shark Tank experience here.

Mike Van Meers and Jay Knerr, OCDC volunteers with a Gin Gypsy.

The Ocean City Development Corporation

Glenn Irwin, the Executive Director of OCDC, says that Bikefest is one of their largest fundraisers all year.  And with OCDC’s mission  to “create and foster a safe and attractive environment in which innovative public and private sector partnerships will collaborate to maximize available resources and opportunities, and eliminate barriers to revitalization in downtown Ocean City Maryland,” OCDC is not only bringing cash into their organization, but they are supporting an event that satisfies this mission by attracting visitors who spend impactful amounts of money with the hotels, restaurants, and small businesses  scattered throughout downtown Ocean City.

Lisa and Dan Stevens join other OCDC volunteers to help raise money during Bike Fest through alcohol sales.

The Ocean City Hotel Motel, Restaurant Association

OCHMRA’s Director, Susan Jones, embodies the mission of her organization as the ultimate people connector.  According to her organizations website, “the OCHMRA is a private, non-profit organization, which exists to connect our industry interests through advocacy, education, and partnerships with the goal of advancing Ocean City as a leading tourism destination.  OCHMRA assists in solving common issues relative to the industry and acts as a clearinghouse for dissemination of information.   The OCHMRA is the ultimate people connector.”  Susan is working with the organizers of Bikefest to coordinate the alcohol sales and the participating non-profits.  For the OCHMRA, the alcohol sales from Bikefest contribute significant revenue to her organization and when COVID cancelled the event, her organization’s budget was stressed because of the loss of revenue from this event.

Map of Bikefest in the Ocean City inlet shows location of beer trucks, the VIP location and the Big Bar where sales benefit local non-profits.

Beverage Options

The inlet parking lot is a center of activity for OC Bikefest from Wednesday, September 14 when the gates open at 4 pm until Saturday evening’s Jasmine Cain concert that begins at 9:30 pm and ends around 11.  The alcohol tents will be pouring from 3 pm until 10 pm Wednesday through Saturday.  The inlet location is closed on Sunday.

The alcohol served at OC Bikefest is purchased under a license obtained by the Town of Ocean City.  Beverage options include Miller Lite, Coors and Coors Lite, Twisted Tea, Blue Moon, Copa Wine, and Monster Energy drinks.  Jack Daniels items include the ready to drink cocktails– lemonade, cola, and honey — as well as mixed drinks.

OCDC is operating 4 beverage tents where all beverage options will be available with the exception of the mixed drinks. They are also working the Jack Daniels truck where you can get purchase mixed drinks, or any of the other beverage options.   The OCHMRA will operate 2 small bar areas with all beer options and canned cocktails will be available.  They will also run the Big Bar and the VIP area where you can get all of those beverages, but also the mixed drinks that are also available in the Jack Daniels truck.

So if you are planning to attend the OC Bikefest in Ocean City, Delmarva Bike Week in Salisbury, or a combination of both events, please get thirsty!  Your purchases have a positive impact on tourism and businesses in Ocean City.

360º Photos on a gorgeous August afternoon in Ocean City, MD

We took a quick trip around Ocean City this week and took these 360º photos so you could experience Ocean City as if you were here.

Here is the beach around 4th street.  The water is clear, it’s over 80º, and everybody is enjoying the day.

Next, we stopped at Shenanigan’s for a quick lunch.  Sitting outside on the boardwalk and enjoying the beach and great food is the perfect way to spend your lunch break!

We headed up the beach to Home 2 Suites where we discovered the amazing water views behind the hotel.  It’s a view not many get to enjoy and most don’t even know that this kind of serenity exists in Ocean City during the summer months!

Finally, we headed to West Ocean City where we found the OC Bay Hopper tied up next to Pier 23 waiting for the Shore Craft Beer Cruise.

With all the ticket-holders on board, Cap’n Dave heads out of the West Ocean City harbor to cruise behind Assateague and then up behind Ocean City – All guests receive 2 beers with their ticket.

From Dock to Donations

A tuna gets weighed ready to be donated.

For the past 13 years, the infamous White Marlin Open has been making waves not only on the docks but in Maryland communities as well. And this year was so different. Over 1,600 pounds of fish was donated to the Maryland Food Bank after the week-long fishing tournament.

Weigh In Donations

Each fish that is brought into the scales during the White Marlin Open has the opportunity to be donated to the Maryland Food Bank at the discretion of the angler. More often than not, daily catches are donated resulting in monumental opportunities for families, which may not otherwise have access to high quality protein. The feeling of hearing an angler announce they will be donating their catch is “exhilarating! Anglers do not have to donate – it is their generosity that makes this event. They really believe in what we are doing, and are happy to help. We are very appreciative, and want to ensure the public knows how much of a difference these fish donations make.”

Prepping a fish to be fileted and portioned.

As fish are donated, people like Christina Pyle, of Catch-n-Carry, are waiting at the filet stations ready to cut and portion the fish. Pyle portions the fish into small 5 ounce pieces then flash freezes the filets that are then given to the Maryland Food Bank. From there, the fish is dispersed among the local pantries around Maryland.

Increasing Costs

Flashed frozen and ready to distribute.

This year’s donation of 1,600 pounds of fish from the White Marlin Open will help the need for food  but may not last as long as it has in the past. The Maryland Food Bank, located here on the Eastern Shore in Salisbury, services thousands of people annually. And with the current prices of food increasing dramatically in the past year, the need is only rising. “The need for food assistance remains at historic levels, and we don’t expect that to change for a long time to come,” says the Maryland Food Bank.  “The number of Marylanders relying on our network of food assistance partners surged by 30% between March and May 2022.” With Maryland’s cost of living being so high and the extra strain of inflation, families are still struggling.

Programs

However, the Maryland Food Bank doesn’t stop at providing donations through the food bank. They have extended their mission to schools as well. This past school year, the Maryland Food Bank graciously partnered with 40 schools right here on the Eastern Shore to help set up food pantries on site. The pantries are manned by school personnel and stocked with donations by the Maryland Food Bank. “We see the School Pantry Program as a powerful tool in addressing childhood hunger in any community because it works through schools – trusted institutions that are part of children’s everyday lives.”

FoodWorks and Work Force Development

Students showing their skills.

In addition to partnering with schools to provide adequate meals to families, the Maryland Food Bank is also extending its outreach to literacy programs as well. “Our FoodWorks program provides intensive culinary training that prepares graduates for well-paying careers in the food industry.” By successfully providing students with appropriate knowledge, the program has expanded from their main facility in Halethorpe to new sites in Baltimore City (UA House) and on the Eastern Shore (Wor-Wic Community College). Sustained employment is the main goal of the program.

In addition to the FoodWorks program, a financial literary component has also been tacked on. This part is focused on “financial literacy programs, educational opportunities, and access to healthcare, as well as help finding clothing, furniture, and transportation assistance.” This additional component helps to tackle deeper issues and hopes to help to end hunger in Maryland communities.

How Can You Help?

Donations make their way through the warehouse.

If anyone is looking for a way to give to the Maryland Food Bank, there are several ways to make that happen. “We’re always looking for support in the form of food, funds, and volunteers. For those interested in donating food, we appreciate donations of the same nutrient-rich foods you’d buy your own family, including canned proteins (tuna, chicken, peanut butter), pasta, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, and breakfast items, just to name a few.” On the Eastern Shore, food can be dropped off at the Salisbury location located at 28500 Owens Branch Road, Salisbury, MD 21801 between the hours of 7:30-4pm, Monday- Friday.  “If you’d like to donate online, visit www.mdfoodbank.org/ways-to-give/ to learn more about the different ways to get involved with our work.”

If you are in need of food, please go to our ‘Find Food’ webpage at www.mdfoodbank.org to find a partner near you.

Ocean City, MD – Trimper Rides will accept a check for $47,550 on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 3pm in front of their 110 year old Herschell-Spillman Carousel. The carousel’s lights and other lighting throughout the park were recently upgraded to more energy efficient LED lights significantly reducing energy consumption by 523,232 kWh. Passing the Filet Knife

If you’ve heard there’s a new girl in town, then you heard right! Christina Pyle, of Catch-n-Carry, a local Ocean City fileting company, has been passed the metaphorical torch- or fileting knife in this case.

A Baltimore County native, Pyle was given the opportunity to filet the biggest game and billfish in the world at the White Marlin Open. When the Motsko family, along with the WMO reached out, it was an immediate yes.

Pyle filets a fish at the marina.

Catch-n-Carry

Christina and her husband own the popular fileting company, Catch-n-Carry, based right here in Ocean City. “We process fish mostly from charter boats. We deal with the mess and the time consuming process of cutting and packaging fish.” A member of their team comes right to the boat and carries it away for you. But that’s not the only thing Catch-n-Carry offers. Pyle filets the fish into meal sized portions and flash freezes it to -5 degrees. “Our goal is to prolong the freezer life of someone’s catch.” With many families on vacation, it’s a unique service that helps get their catch from pier to home.

Passing the Filet Knife

Being her first-time fileting for the WMO and taking over the filet station came with huge responsibility and pressure. Christina stepped into a vacancy at the marina, where dock legend, Rose Stivers had fileted at the WMO for more twenty years. “I’ve watched her over the years and can’t believe I’m attempting to fill in her shoes.” However much stress it may entail, Christina is no stranger to pressure as she works as a career firefighter when she’s not slicing through tuna or mahi.

This year has been extra special for Pyle. Catch-n-Carry gets to partner with the Maryland Food Bank and commercial electric contractor, Dvorak LLC. Christina will be assisting with fileting and processing the fish caught during this years 2022 White Marlin Open. Dvorak LLC. offered to sponsor Pyle and Catch-n-Carry to “provide fresh, flash frozen fish to families in need.

Tricks of the Trade

When asked about a special fileting technique, Pyle explains that it’s more of a combination of several techniques put together. “I’ve been taught many different ways to filet and I guess I’ve come to use a technique that works best for me.” And with a variety of knives at her disposal, making sure to find what makes you most comfortable is key. Being safe with knife skills is crucial and Pyle can tell you that first hand. She’s only had a handful of accidents with the knife, even while practicing the best knife etiquette.

While picking the proper knife size for fileting monster bill and game fish is important (Pyle prefers an 8” blade), her knife size may vary depending on the type of fish. For example, some fish carry more meat in their head while others carry more on the belly. Christina explains, “Tuna have a lot of meat. They have a back loin, belly loin, and collar meat. So- we try to capture as most meat as we can when we cut.” Even though tuna have a thick skin that can make fileting tricky, tuna are her favorite fish to cut and portion.

Pyle on the dock doing what she does best.

You Go Girl

Being in a male dominated industry, Pyle can sometimes stand out on the dock with her long blonde hair hanging out of her Catch-n-Carry hat. Yet Christina explains, over the past few years, “there are a lot more female anglers and female only tournaments. I’ve met a lot of really cool women who share the same passion for fishing as me.” She believes that a lot of women may have felt intimidated to fish but are now stepping out their comfort zones and trying something new.

Many Thanks

Christina would like to thank all of the boats that have donated fish to the Maryland Food Bank this year along with Dvorak LLC, the WMO, and the Motsko family for the incredible opportunity.
