A Captain’s Pre- Game

Preparing for the White Marlin Open is no Game

“Failing to prepare means preparing to fail” seems to be the motto of many, if not all fishing boat captains during the White Marlin Open. Captain Dave Midgett of All In is no exception.

Midgett explains, “We go from charter mode to tournament mode.” From the beginning of summer until now, All In has been focused on charter fishing and catching large tuna. But once the second week of August approaches, captains literally do a one-eighty and channel their focus to monster billfish.

All In settles at White Marlin Marina waiting to tackle the WMO

How It Starts

To register in the tournament boat owners, captains, and anglers must first decide which fish categories they will be aiming for. Whether it’s the largest tuna, heaviest fish, or the elusive qualifying white marlin, captains can enter the tournament for the small sum of $1,200. However, as each additional category is entered, the fee increases dramatically. With an all-in (all categories) entry into the tournament, boats can plan to pay up to $57,000.

Ready, Set, Reel

In preparation for the largest billfish tournament in the world, seasoned captains like Midgett begin to prepare all rods and reels by restringing all rods that will be used in the tournament. Some are prepped well in advance and stored, while others are used up until the day before and must be restrung at the last minute. All old tackle is swapped out for new. And then the real fun begins…

Ballyhoo after being prepped.

Breaking Bait

Since live bait is not allowed in the tournament, small frozen ballyhoo is bought and then thawed. Captains and mates proceed to prep the ballyhoo by making a few adjustments. First the fish are squeezed from the face to the tail on the underside to excrete anything in the fish’s belly.  Their backs are broken in half so that they emulate live bait while trolling. And lastly, the eyeballs are removed from their sockets so that anglers are able to string and rig them more easily. Midgett explained that they will prep between 50 and 100 ballyhoo that will hopefully last them for two days. If all the ballyhoo are not used on the first trip out to sea, ballyhoo can be soaked in a salty brine solution to keep them fresh and ready for the next trip.

Technology

Though bait is an important part of the fishing process, so is technology. Not only are captains setting their Garmin GPS’ and navigation tools towards the canyons, they’re continuously checking weather apps on their phones. Who knew? While the everyday weather app on an ordinary I-phone will suffice to see if a sunny beach day is ahead of you, it doesn’t show the weather offshore. After chatting with Midgett, he was able to show on his phone the weather offshore, which was very different from the weather shown here in Ocean City. “Just because it’s sunny here in town, it doesn’t mean it’s not raining where we’re headed. And vise versa.” On days where Ocean City shows partial rain, the weather at Poor Man’s Canyon may be crystal clear with bright blue skies. Apps like Windy and Wind Finder are commonly used.

Check Them Out

Two weeks ago, Captain Dave Midgett of All In Fishing Charters placed third in the heaviest tuna category. His hope is to land the winning marlin and reel in some big time money during this year’s White Marlin Open. When “tournament mode” returns to “charter mode” you can catch a charter with Midgett out of White Marlin Marina. They’re on the more affordable side of the charters costing about $2,500 with a 6-person limit. You’ll enjoy a 12 hour charter with a knowledgeable and experienced captain that is no stranger to the tournament podium. For more information on All In Fishing Charters check out https://www.allinsportfishingoc.com/.

All In charging the wide open ocean.

A special thank you to the owners of All In, Mike Waclawski and Brian Logue. And the best of luck to Captain David Midgett and anglers Scott and Mike Watson, Walt and Ryan Horseman, and Ray Shue.

Great Beach Read – Set in Ocean City, Maryland

If you are like me, sitting on the beach reading with breaks for swimming and napping is the perfect way to spend at least one of your vacation days.  And if you devour novels set in a place you know and love, then the newly released “Marlin Week” is the great beach read of the summer for Ocean City lovers.

Set during the White Marlin Open, this 300 page book is a great beach read!

“It’s the first full week of August in the small beach town of Ocean City, Maryland. And that can only mean one thing. It’s Marlin Week! Any given year, up to 500 boats register for The White Marlin Open, the world’s largest and richest billfish tournament—and its popularity is only gaining speed. With a cumulative $10.8 million worth of prize winnings, it’s no wonder people flock to the white marlin capital of the world for this incredible sight!”

Marlin Fest is set during the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland.  It follows “captains TJ, Finn and Rob as they catch some monster billfish, ride waves of emotions in their personal lives and try to reel in some major prize money.”

Written by Katie Ruskey, a teacher in the Baltimore area.  Katie’s passion is writing and she took two years to write the book after taking notes on ideas and characters long before that.  Katie published Marlin Week independently in late July.  The book is only 300 pages and costs only $22.  It’s available on Amazon.

Katie Ruskey writes from her home in the Baltimore area and from Ocean City.

Katie loves to run, boat and walk her yellow lab, Cooper.  For more information on the author, check out her site. You will also find her children’s books here, including the AB Seas of Ocean City, Maryland.

The Inlet Parking Lot Starting August 4, 2022

Expect New Parking & Traffic Patterns in the Inlet Lot

You will find a lot of cones as you enter the inlet lot in Ocean City this week.

If you are used to driving into the inlet parking lot and parking along the water to watch the waves and look for dolphins, don’t expect to do that from now until the end of the White Marlin Open.  This huge tournament starts on Monday, August 8,2022.  This is the 49th annual event which has turned into the largest and richest billfish tournament in the world.  Whether you like the fishing tournament or not, if you plan to go to the inlet in Ocean City, Maryland, you will find a lot of orange cones and no parking access on the water.

Cones and metal fencing will guide you to parking in the lot this week.

You can still park at the inlet lot, but as you enter, you will find a lot of orange cones that direct you into the lot and prevent you from using the area along the water and the beach. There, you will see the Marlin Fest.

Marlin Fest Takes Over Inlet Parking Lot Along the Water

Marlin Fest has a lot of activities to entertain you whether you like fishing or not. There will be games, vendors, corn hole and more along the beach.  Visitors to the WMO fest will have a great view of the boats coming and going too.  Some of the activities include:

  • Live entertainment every day
    • August 8: Opposite Directions
    • August 9:  Other Brother Darryl
    • August 10:  Jimmy Charles
    • August 11: Radio Ocean City
    • August 12: The Q-Tip Bandits
  • Live stream of fish weigh-ins on the gigantic screen
  • Kid-friendly experiences designed to educate

Paint by the Sea: Inside T.C. Studios

Are you looking for an interactive and memorable experience to complete your vacation to Ocean City, Maryland? There’s nothing more breathtaking than the seaside views of the resort, and the team at T.C. Studios can help you and your family capture those stunning images all on one canvas. Whether you’re the next Picasso or Monet, or simply creative and seeking something exciting and new, the team at T.C. Studios will make you feel at ease. Dubbed the “perfect souvenir,” the studio not only provides an experience and memories but a masterpiece to take home.

The creative agency and paint party venue hosts paint nights and experiences year-round at its studio located downtown at 1505 Philadelphia Avenue. From kids camps to special themed nights allowing you to paint your pet, Assateague, or even a jeep, and private parties, T.C. Studios has a multitude of offerings.

Events include supplies and are affordable, at $20-$30 per person. Have no fear, creative coaches will guide you personally through each step of the process and ensure that you walk out with a true work of art.

Since its founding in 2016, the studio has pioneered the creative entertainment industry in Ocean City and beyond. Launched by couple Jamie and Ali Jacobs, the two have combined their unique skills of entrepreneurship, music, and art to not only bring a splash of color to the resort but to allow residents and tourists alike to be part of that creativity.

“Our mission was to form a team and provide jobs for local artists while connecting our community with more art,” said Ali Jacobs, co-founder and creative director. “We offer family-friendly nightlife for people of all generations. People are really surprised when they leave with a masterpiece.”

Jamie, a jack of all trades with experience in historical preservation, beautification, business, and music, paired with Ali, a MICA-educated painter with abilities ranging from crafting murals to leading creative entertainment, make a strong team that has led T.C. into a growing success.

In just a few years, the team at T.C. has already doubled in size and has earned high status, ranked as one of the nine best spots for paint and wine by Best Things Maryland.

“Coming to T.C. Studios has become a tradition for so many families over the past few years, and seeing them return is a blessing,” Jacobs added.

While based in Ocean City, the creativity does not stop on the shore. T.C. operates a mobile unit, which travels all across the East Coast to bring painting experiences to around 400 events annually. The mobile unit frequents many breweries in Maryland and Delaware.

Interested in hosting a private party? Book an on-site experience, or T.C. will come to a local brewery, your hotel, or even your home. Click here to book a private party.

The studio serves as an active player in the growing appreciation for art on the Eastern Shore, especially in Ocean City. The team has partnered with the town’s beautification efforts, assisting with a mural on 15th Street. As the resort has faced struggles downtown over the past few years, Jacobs has sought to have a foot in bringing positivity to the area through art. Whether inside the studio or out on the street, Jacobs and her team continue to prove daily that art matters.

“Putting on a smock every day and connecting with the people that walk through our doors is extremely rewarding,” Jacobs reflected. “It’s nice to give people a fresh opportunity to express themselves and simply let go.”

“This contest started when hotels were coming to us wanting this information — guests in the hotels wanted recommendations for the best businesses in a variety of categories.  That is why it’s imperative that the Best of Ocean City not be related to advertising,” said OceanCity.com CEO Ann McGinnis Hillyer. “We want to provide every visitor in Ocean City with real, honest recommendations for the best businesses in town.”

2022 Winners

Winning an OceanCity.com Best of Ocean City® award is a triumph for Ocean City businesses because it shows that their fans are willing to take the time to vote.   Winners are prominently recognized within the local community and receive a coveted photo award plaque printed on metal and a distinctive window decal to display.

Surf’s Up: Red Bull Foam Wreckers Coming to Ocean City This Weekend

Contest jerseys at Red Bull Foam Wreckers on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, USA on 25 June, 2022.

Surf’s Up! Are you ready to catch some waves? A brand-new surfing contest revolutionizing the industry is preparing to make a stop in Ocean City, Maryland, this Saturday, July 23. The Red Bull Foam Wreckers series promotes surfing for people of all skill levels ages 16 and over looking for a way to enjoy the waves in a relaxed and exciting way.

The anti-surf contest, organized on the 39th Street beach, has one simple requirement – ride a soft-top, foam board, and that’s it! The rest is up to you, with having a fun time being the primary goal of the contest. Participants can ride however many waves they would like, in whatever style they choose. Foam Wreckers provides an opportunity for both first-time and experienced surfers to experiment and have a blast out on the water.

Each participant will spin the “wheel of shred” to determine which board, provided by the organizers, they will ride. After receiving a board of various types and sizes, people will then compete for 15 minutes in groups of 6 to 10. The most unique and thrilled surfer will win the soft-board mini-contests.

To register, participants can click here. The registration fee is $25, and competitions will kick off at 9 a.m. Surfers under 18 will need a parent or guardian accompanying them.

While many take surfing quite seriously, the most important message of this particular contest is that surfing is truly for everyone, and above all, having a memorable and delightful time on the water is paramount. Many surfing contests on the shore and across the nation target professional or highly experienced surfers, but few make room for others who share their passion.

Ben Gravy, a surfing pro and online sensation who has amassed more than 47 million views across his YouTube channel promoting the sport and a positive lifestyle, will help to lead the Ocean City event this weekend. Gravy believes that the Foam Wreckers contest is the best thing to happen to surfing, making up for what the sport was missing.

“A lot of surf contests are very serious and are for high-level athletes. An average surf contest might not feel like something a regular surfer would want to attend, but at Foam Wreckers, everyone is invited,” Gravy said. “If you want to come out to the beach and enjoy the day with a family-friendly atmosphere, this is your event. Everyone comes and catches a few waves and leaves with a smile. It’s all about expressing yourself and surfing how you want to surf.”

As the Red Bull Foam Wreckers contest makes its way from Florida, Texas, Maryland, California, and Hawaii, surfing pros hope to change the narrative and make surfing an inclusive sport for everyone. For Gravy, there was never any question that Ocean City should receive a spot in the Foam Wreckers tour.

Ben Gravy surfs at Red Bull Foam Wreckers on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, USA on 25 June, 2022.

“From the beginning, Ocean City was on my radar. People are always inviting and stoked to have surfers here,” Gravy added. “There is not only a high volume of surfers here but a large group of surfers who like to have fun and have high energy. We want to share the idea that surfing is for everyone.”

To embody the welcoming message of the contest, there may be no better ambassador than Gravy himself. He and his undeniably loyal online fans, dubbed NUB Nation, which stands for his inclusive idea, “Nobody Unlikes Buddy,” have completely changed outsiders’ perspectives regarding the surfing community. Since 2015, Gravy has created vlogs documenting his journey with surfing through life. By taking advantage of social media platforms, he broke down the typical barriers for surfers, bypassing traditional linear media, exclusive contests, and coveted awards. His hard work and grit alone have established him as one of the most untraditional yet popular surfing icons.

“If you’re not a high-level athlete with the coolest board and looking the most radical, people think that they aren’t cool. I came into this sport as a kook and realized that you can be a normal person who just has a great time catching waves,” he reflected. “Surfing is truly therapy and is special for people. Remember that there are more people who surf in this world for fun, and it’s important to have contests like these.”

So far, the reception of the contest has been nothing short of positive. Weekend warriors have driven hundreds of miles and attended multiple contests, looking for yet another chance to hit the surf.

Gravy and his fellow surfers hope to see you on the water this weekend, here in Ocean City.

Art in Unexpected Places: Public Art in Ocean City

Sunset

Simply look at Ocean City’s gorgeous landscape, and it appears as a masterful work of art itself. In addition to the natural beauty of the resort, there is plenty of manmade artwork all across the town. While you can find creativity in many traditional locations around Ocean City, there is a growing and noticeable trend of art in unexpected places.

For paintings and drawings galore, many residents and visitors head to the world-class Art League of Ocean City on 94th Street. However, the efforts of the Art League team, as well as partners at the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC), and beyond have helped to enshrine art in the resort’s identity.

Some of the most recognized OCDC projects include the White Marlin Sculpture at the downtown entrance to the resort and the Dolphin Sculpture at the foot of the Route 90 bridge. Over $450,000 in private contributions have made these projects and others possible.

Widespread across the town are over 38 repurposed and painted utility boxes, brightening up the otherwise bland power sources. OCDC often collaborates with the Art League to design the boxes and commissions local artists to work their magic.

This utility box is located on North Division Street, just west of the Boardwalk. The box was painted by Erica DeHart of the Art League of Ocean City.

“These painted boxes are found at most intersections in the downtown area. OCDC has completed a variety of public art projects, including sculptures, murals, and decorative bricks, but it is this utility box program that many visitors and residents contact OCDC about,” explained Glenn Irwin, executive director of OCDC. “They love these simple art pieces that quickly transform a bland utility box into a piece of artwork.”

Delmarva Power grants use of the boxes and PPG Paints on 8th Street donates supplies.

A utility box by Carole Gentes located Northside of Talbot Street between Boardwalk and South Baltimore Avenue. Can you decode the message using the QR code?

“The utility boxes bring art to places where you wouldn’t expect it,” said Aubrey Sizemore, Volunteer Coordinator at the Art League of Ocean City. “You can turn the corner and see them on the walk to breakfast or the beach. It’s such a pleasant surprise.”

A new walking guide produced by OCDC in 2021 allows visitors to explore the many boxes located throughout downtown Ocean City, as well as in other locations further north. Click here to view the guide.

Inside the Art League, artists are finding even more ways to showcase their talents. In early July, the Arts Center opened the “Staircase Gallery,” lauded as a new exhibition with a permanent ocean-themed mural curated by locals Francisco Rivera of Lincoln, Delaware, and Ian Postley of Bishopville, Maryland. In addition to the mural, Rivera has many of his works hanging from the walls of the stairwell, adding creativity to a space never before thought of as a gallery.

Francisco Rivera hard at work in the new Staircase Gallery.

If the staircase was not enough, there is now a mural in another spot where you would have never expected it – the tennis court. Hoisted across the fence of the courts located next to the Arts Center, the mural, titled Seaside Recollections, by Jeanne Anderton of Hebron, Maryland, lights up 94th Street and features photograms. The solar prints are made of trash and treasures scooped up on the beach and Ocean City Boardwalk.

“The mural is cyanotype photograms of items collected at various locations on the Ocean City Boardwalk,” Anderton said. “Collected items — food, wrappers, cigarettes, clothing tags, napkins, and natural elements including sand, feathers, leaves, and broken shells — are collected and placed on coated, light-sensitive paper and exposed to the sun.”

Anderton, as well as the Town of Ocean City, a partner in the project, hope that the mural influences people to view everyday objects and trash in a different light.

There is certainly art all across Ocean City, but where it may pop up next is anyone’s guess. Still, there is no question that the resort is home to endless creativity and that public art is a public service for all.
