Blood Bank of Delmarva Urges Blood Donations as Summer “Trauma Season” Begins

Blood for a Brew Campaign Kicks Off with Dogfish Head Blood Drive

DELMARVA REGION – Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) will launch the 6th annual Blood for a Brew summer campaign on May 19 and is also urging Delmarva residents to donate blood ahead of Memorial Day weekend as hospitals prepare for the start of “trauma season,” a period marked by increased accidents, emergency surgeries, and higher demand for lifesaving blood transfusions.

Healthcare professionals typically see a rise in serious injuries during the late spring and summer months due to increased travel, outdoor recreation, boating incidents, and holiday activity. At the same time, blood donations often decline because of school breaks, vacations, and holiday schedules, creating added strain on the blood supply during a critical period for patients. To help encourage donations during the holiday week, those who come to donate at a BBD donor center or blood drive between Wednesday, May 20th and Wednesday, May 27th will receive a packable picnic blanket to celebrate the unofficial start of summer.

In addition to the summer giveaway, BBD is kicking off its Blood for a Brew campaign with a blood drive on Tuesday, May 19th at Dogfish Head Brewery’s headquarters in Milton, DE. This campaign is critical to raise awareness for the need for blood and to encourage new blood donors to step up and save a life. BBD’s partnership with beloved local breweries and coffee shops helps to alleviate the annual donation shortfall. The Dogfish Head blood drive appointments are full on the May 19 kickoff, but donors can still sign up for the June 2 date as well as other Blood for a Brew drives, HERE.

“Memorial Day marks the beginning of a busy summer full of events while also being one of the most challenging times of year for the blood supply. Our Blood for a Brew campaign launches at the start of the critical, summertime period and makes for a fun and easy way for our community to donate blood.” said Kristin Frederick, Vice President of Operations, Blood Bank of Delmarva. “Trauma patients, surgical patients, cancer patients, and many others rely on blood donations every day, and we need donors to step up before summer shortages impact hospital inventories.”

Consistent donation helps ensure hospitals have blood available when patients need it. We are asking eligible donors to make and keep appointments. One canceled appointment may seem small, but any decline in donor participation can quickly impact local blood availability.

These events serve as the kickoff to BBD’s broader “Be the Reason Summer Feels Brighter” initiative, a seasonal effort focused on maintaining a stable blood supply throughout the challenging summer months through community partnerships, donor appreciation campaigns, special events, and ongoing public awareness efforts. Donors can visit Donate Blood – Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) to view upcoming summer donation opportunities, learn about additional donor promotions, and find convenient locations to donate.

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. In light of recent updates to FDA guidance, more people than ever may now be eligible to give. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit Donor Eligibility – Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) or call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.

Matthew Meinhardt Opens “What Gathers” Exhibit, During June Free First Friday Reception at Ocean City Center for the Arts

OCEAN CITY, MD — May 14, 2026 — The Art League of Ocean City, 94th Street bayside, is pleased to present “What Gathers,” a new exhibition by Matthew Meinhardt, on view June 5 through June 27. Centered in the Thaler Gallery, the exhibition debuts with a free First Friday reception on Friday, June 5, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. This extended time frame accommodates the evolving audience drawn to Meinhardt’s work, allowing for a more fluid and leisurely experience throughout the evening.

Originally from Ocean City and now residing and exhibiting in Los Angeles, and beyond, Meinhardt chose the Art League of Ocean City in his hometown to unveil “What Gathers.” Expanding on Meinhardt’s ongoing interest in perception, reality, and media, the paintings in this show traverse themes of sight, interpretation, and belief, inviting viewers to reflect on how visuals and narratives shape our sense of truth. An artist talk is planned for Tuesday, June 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Art League for those who are interested to learn more about Meinhardt’s motivations, inspirations, and methods.

As described by Meinhardt, ”What Gathers, invites viewers into a sky that functions as a theater of the uncanny.” The exhibition features a series of paintings in acrylic and oil, examining the visual language of “sightings”—glimpses of rare, uncertain, or strange things or occurrences—through a study in simulacra and simulation. Paintings will be available for purchase during the length of the show ranging from $1500-$2500.

Meinhardt employs recognizable paraphernalia of entertainment and insect-like silhouettes set against atmospheric backdrops. These aerial anomalies are paired with portraits of “witnesses,” folkish figures whose expressions of bewilderment or undiscerning gaze act as a feedback loop for a pseudological narrative.

“What Gathers” speaks to us more than the objects within this world; it captures the collective tension of a society negotiating the schizophrenia of media and truth. By stripping subjects of their everyday context, Meinhardt invites the audience into a fantasy where belief, doubt, and fascination collide, echoing the deep-seated suspicion of our own reality,” reflects Kacie Neeb, Gallery Manager.

While Meinhardt’s collection takes center stage, the building will be fully activated, with new exhibits and activities—including Clay-a-palooza—spanning the studios, classrooms, and courtyard.

The Art League of Ocean City is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the visual arts to the community through education, exhibits, scholarship, programs, and community art projects.

Annual “Artists Paint OC Festival” Aug. 12–16 with Cash Prizes Totaling Over $9,000

OCEAN CITY, MD — May 11, 2026 — The Art League of Ocean City invites everyone to experience Ocean City through outdoor painting during Artists Paint OC: Plein Air (French for “in the open air”) Festival, August 12–16, 2026. Fifty-plus artists from the Mid Atlantic region will paint throughout Ocean City and its surrounding areas—from sunny beaches and boardwalk spectacles to maritime scenes and the expansive agricultural vistas of the Eastern Shore. The festival concludes with an outdoor gallery and sale of all the original art created during the festival, with cash prize awards totaling over $9,000.

Locals and visitors can observe artists at work across town each day of the festival, view the finished works, and shop original art inspired by our beloved region at the Wet Paint Sale, 5-7pm, Saturday, and 1-3pm, Sunday. Live music and complimentary refreshments enhance the shopping experience at the outdoor gallery, which captures Ocean City’s spectacular sunrises, sunsets, moonlit waters, and energy. Celebrated artists Kevin Fitzgerald and Evan Fitzgerald will serve as judges for the Artists Paint OC and Quick Paint competitions, respectively.

“The mediums used may not have fully cured and are still wet, so to speak, but it gives our attendees the very first opportunity to buy before the creations leave the area,” said Executive Director Rina Thaler. Thaler added, “As a 501c3 nonprofit, those purchasing are fueling the arts here in Delmarva and ensuring the Art League can produce a 22nd year of Artists Paint OC.”

Kids Paint OC is the youth companion competition and program that encourages ages 6 to 17 to paint outdoors during the month of July, submissions are due by July 31 and details can be found at OCart.org. Due to the popularity and growth of Kids Paint OC, its Awards Ceremony will have its own designated day, Friday, Aug. 14 at the Art League of Ocean City Center for the Arts. A panel of judges will select the winners and awards totaling over $500 in cash prizes will be announced. Kids Paint OC is made possible in part by the Worcester County Arts Council.

Sponsorship is being accepted now for Artists Paint OC. Peter Glenville Foundation and PNC Bank have committed again this year to supporting the 21st year of the festival.

To fully connect the competitions, judging, and total gallery experience, during the month of August, father and son, Kevin and Evan Fitzgerald will present their second dual exhibit at the Ocean City Art League, highlighting their ongoing collaboration in contemporary coastal art, giving guests the unique opportunity to buy from this highly collected pair and take home art from the festival. Those interested in sponsoring Artists Paint OC should contact Jessica Bauer at development@artleagueofoceancity.org.

5 Things to Do on Memorial Day in Ocean City

On the face of it, Memorial Day is something of an arbitrary summer kick-off. It’s a throwback to when most people worked 9-5 jobs and three-day weekends were something of a rarity. The last Monday in May, however, is the first three-day weekend of the year that is guaranteed to be temperate (and often pleasantly hot). It makes perfect sense that it should have established itself as the kickoff to the summer vacation season.

Today, as the three-day getaway is a critical part of many of our busy lives, Memorial Day Weekend in Ocean City holds a special place in the collective consciousness.  It reminds us of the permanent good-off mode we occupied as kids, and gives us a reason to think seriously about how to recapture that attitude once again.

There are a million reasons to spend Memorial Weekend at the beach. Here are five:

1. The water is cool but not cold.

Ocean City, Maryland
Samantha Snyder and Melissa Thornton riding the waves at the 39t Street Beach.

That first annual dip in the ocean is a really specific one. You hit the surf and are startled by a cold that makes you lose and catch your breath all at once. But by the time Memorial Day rolls around, the Ocean City beach has been toasting in the warm spring sun for a few weeks and 90 degree days are common, or at least more common than not. The sand will have been hot on your way down and, although the seabreeze provided a little relief, the cure for the hot is the cold, and vice-versa. When you head back to your blanket to take in the sun, the head still will be something you appreciate.

2. The traffic is thick, but not desperate and manic

There’s a whole other attitude in May than in July in Ocean City. First off, most people are coming just for the weekend rather than for a week or two. Vacation pressure – the phenomenon that makes some people desperate to have fun, hasn’t set in yet. Instead there is something of an optimism in even the line of cars along Route 50 on the last leg toward the beach. Parking is a little easier, as is navigating the streets, and the enthusiasm for the weekend ahead is the dominant motivator.

3. Ocean City is busy but not packed

Umbrella stand kids are still working on their tans Memorial Day Weekend.

More than pretty much any other summer-y weekend, Memorial Day weekend makes you feel as if you are part of a rising wave, and in a way you are. In the ramp up to schools closing and vacations starting, festivals and excursions and fireworks, Memorial Day weekend puts the beach front and center. Sure, there still are plenty of sponsored events but most of the people in town are there specifically to enjoy the tradition of being at the beach on Memorial Day.

4. The summer is not started, but still is anticipated.

Memorial Day weekend is kind of like a staid Spring Break. Families and couples treat themselves to a well-earned taste of the summer to come. Many if not most people who come to Ocean City for Memorial Day weekend treat it as a kind of vacation test drive, a way of whetting their vacation appetite. Restaurant waits are minimal, bars have plenty of people in them, but getting service still is a piece of cake. It is the best of the summer mixed with the perks of the off season.

Ocean City lifeguard
Making sure they are in top physical condition all season is a point of pride for many on the OCBP.

5. The lifeguards are back!

If there’s any more iconic symbol of the beach than a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol mounting the stand, I’d love to hear about it. After months of anticipation and of the recurrent call to keep your feet in the sand until they are in the stand, you can hit the waves while the beach patrol stands guard.

Brasa is Bringing the Heat (and Flavor) to Ocean City

New Brasa restaurant due to open 2026 in ocean city md
Construction looks almost complete at the Brasa Restaurant on 33rd Street

We’ve all been wondering what’s been going on with the construction at Guido’s Burritos on 33rd Street these past few months—and now we finally have the answer. And yeah, it’s worth the wait. A new spot called Brasa is getting ready to open, and it’s all about fire, bold flavor, and keeping things simple. The concept blends Argentine asado with the easy, ingredient-focused style of Tuscan Italian cooking.

At its core, Brasa is built around live-fire cooking. Think premium meats, fresh seafood, and seasonal veggies, all cooked over an open flame to bring out bold, natural flavors.

“Brasa is about fire, simplicity, and flavor,” says founder Rocco DiFilippo. “Argentine grilling and Tuscan Italian cooking really share the same mindset—great ingredients, cooked right, in a place people actually want to hang out.”

What’s on the Menu?

The open-flame kitchen is the star here, with plenty to look forward to:

  • Wood-fired steaks topped with house chimichurri
  • Fire-roasted chicken and grilled seafood like whole fish and octopus
  • Seasonal veggies cooked right over the flame
  • Authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizza

On the Italian side, it’s all about simple, rustic dishes done well:

  • House-made pastas with rich, balanced sauces
  • Prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and basil combos
  • Olive oil–driven dishes that let the ingredients shine

They’re also rolling out a solid lunch lineup, with things like chimichurri steak sandwiches and prosciutto-mozzarella-basil on fresh Italian bread—perfect whether you’re a local or just in town for the beach.

Breakfast Your Way

Brasa isn’t just a dinner spot—they’re covering mornings too, with two easy options:

  • A full sit-down breakfast with fresh breads, pastries, egg dishes, and great coffee
  • A walk-up window for quick coffee, espresso, breakfast sandwiches, and grab-and-go bites

Whether you’re easing into the day or heading straight to the beach, it’s designed to fit right in.

A Space to Hang Out

The vibe at Brasa is warm and inviting, built around that fire-focused concept:

  • A cozy indoor space with wood, stone, and iron details
  • A covered patio for outdoor dining
  • An easy indoor-outdoor flow that works just as well for a casual lunch as it does for a lively night out

A Fresh Addition to Ocean City

With its mix of fire-driven cooking and Argentine-Italian influence, Brasa is aiming to bring something a little different to the Ocean City dining scene. It’s not too fancy, not too casual—just a great spot you’ll want to come back to.

“We wanted to create something that feels like part of Ocean City,” DiFilippo says. “A place people keep coming back to.”

We can’t wait to give it a try! Brasa is due to open this spring on 33rd Street.

If you’re looking for a reason to head to Ocean City, Maryland this weekend, the answer is simple: kites, color, and a whole lot of seaside fun. The Maryland International Kite Expo—affectionately known as “MIKE”—is back in Ocean City. It promises to fill the sky with jaw-dropping displays and beachy excitement from April 24–26 hosted by no other than The Kite Loft.

Years of Joy

The Kite Loft is celebrating 51 years of Ocean City kite flying magic.

Hosted by The Kite Loft, this beloved event is celebrating its 33rd year, while the shop itself marks an incredible 51 years of bringing joy to the shoreline. Owned by Jay Knerr and Mary Lynn Knerr, The Kite Loft has long been known as “Where Fun Begins”—and this weekend, that motto couldn’t be more true.

It’s Free!

The Kite Loft, Ocean City, Maryland International Kite Festival
Kites of all shapes and sizes decorate the sky while kite enthusiasts look on.

Festivities take place daily from about 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the beach between 4th and 6th Streets, with music floating from The Kite Loft’s Boardwalk deck to keep the vibe lively. Best of all? It’s completely free to attend and participate, whether you’re 3 or 103.

What to Expect

The Kite Loft, Ocean City, Maryland International Kite Festival
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Nope! Just a dragon kite in front of The Kite Loft.

The sky will be bursting with everything from massive, whimsical kites—think life-sized blue whales and octopus kites as long as two school buses—to high-energy sport kite performances. One of the must-see highlights is the synchronized quad-line flying shows, where 8 to 12 skilled flyers perform mesmerizing, choreographed maneuvers in unison. It’s equal parts art and adrenaline.

Kite enthusiasts travel from across the country, especially the Mid-Atlantic region, to be part of the action. And while the pros put on a show, visitors are encouraged to jump right in. Bring your own kite or pick one up from The Kite Loft, where expert staff are ready to help you get flying. New to kites? No problem—basic instruction and even sport kite lessons may be available.

Kite Flying Fun

Kite handlers from all over make the trip for MIKE to show off their skills and take in the flying sites.

Families will find plenty to love, especially the crowd-favorite candy drop. Picture this: a giant kite lifts a bag of candy 100 feet into the air before releasing a sugary shower onto the beach below. Kids dash, parents laugh—it’s kite fun at its finest.

If conditions cooperate, Saturday night may feature a magical lighted kite fly, with glowing LED kites dancing against the dark sky. It’s a can’t-miss moment that adds an extra spark to an already dazzling weekend.

With around 200 kite flyers and thousands of spectators expected, MIKE is one of the largest kite festivals in the country—and one of the most visually stunning. Thanks to support from Xfinity, the event remains free and accessible to all.

A Whale of a Goodbye: The Flagship Hotel Takes Its Final Bow

Happier days at the Flagship Hotel on 26th Street and the Boardwalk

Cue the nostalgia—this week marks the final chapter for the Flagship Oceanfront Hotel on the Boardwalk at 26th Street, as bulldozers rolled in and began taking down the longtime family favorite on the north end of the boards. From its iconic pool bar to the unforgettable whale watching over Jonah and the Whale restaurant, it’s the end of an era (and yes… the all-you-can-eat seafood feasts—snow crab legs included—have officially swum off into the sunset).

For decades, this spot was more than just a hotel—it was a tradition, a memory-maker, a place families returned to year after year. And while it’s never easy to say goodbye, this isn’t the end of the story.
