Labor Day Weekend in Ocean City

Marking the End of Summer (or Does It?)

Labor Day in Ocean City MDLabor Day is the first Monday in September and has always created a long weekend where many people in the mid-Atlantic region head to Ocean City to enjoy the beach and time with family.  It’s the last weekend where you can enjoy the care-free days of summer before everybody heads back to work and school. Typically, it’s the last weekend commuters can enjoy fewer traffic jams because many workers are still on vacation.

Historically, Labor Day used to be the end of summer fashions.   Many of us remember our parents and grandparents telling us that they couldn’t wear white or seer-sucker suits after Labor Day.

Businesses in Ocean City used to shut down after Labor Day.  It was hard to find an open restaurant or hotel.   Sunfest was mid September, right after Labor Day, to celebrate the end of summer with all the workers who made summer vacation possible for the millions who traveled to Ocean City.

Now, you can wear what you want for as long as you want, you can come to Ocean City for Labor Day.  You can also come anytime in September or October to enjoy weekends packed with fun!  Sunfest  (October 24-27) is much later and a great event for visitors with food, live music and vendors galore.

Let’s look at Labor Day in Ocean City.

History of Labor Day

American flag on the beach in Ocean City MD

“Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.”  So states the history of Labor Day on the US Department of Labor’s website.   Activists and municipalities celebrated Labor Day in the mid 1880s.  Then, in 1894, Congress passed legislation to designate the first Monday in September as Labor Day, a national holiday. You can read more history published this year on WBAL.

Push in Maryland to Start Schools After Labor Day

Gov. Hogan joined with Comptroller Peter Franchot Supporting Post Labor Day Start Date to Benefit Families, Students, Teachers, and the Economy

Labor Day in Maryland has been celebrated since the late 1800s.  More recently, however, Maryland has shown great interest in the holiday.

Governor Hogan, in 2016, signed an Executive Order requiring all Maryland school districts to start school after Labor Day. His position was a win for Ocean City because such a move would increase tourism to our town, and keep kids out of hot classrooms which lacked air-conditioning for another week!  A poll taken at that time showed that 68% of Marylanders supported that idea.  The General Assembly had other ideas.  They passed legislation to allow the school districts to start before Labor Day and Governor Hogan vetoed it.

In early 2019, the Maryland General Assembly overrode the veto by a vote of 93-43.  Now, only 9 school districts in Maryland start after Labor Day for the 2024-2025 season.

Governor Wes Moore has shown renewed interest in the origins of the holiday to honor American workers.

While a set-back, Ocean City is extending summer regardless of the legislation passed in 2019. We celebrate workers, we celebrate visitors, and we celebrate ways to enjoy time with family and friends.  We have lots of reasons for you to visit for Labor Day or anytime during our “second season!.”

Labor Day in Ocean City, MD 2024

Think picnics, picking crabs, enjoying the beach, and just spending time with your friends and family and NOT working – as our forbears imagining in the 1800s.  This is a time for relaxation and Ocean City is the place to do it.  You have this long weekend to help ease you back into the swing of things.

Mary Mossburg – My kids were so excited for an impromptu trip to the beach this past weekend!!

Labor Day is the last weekend to enjoy many of Ocean City’s special summer events, like

  • Sundaes in the Park (last night Sunday, Sept. 1).
    • You can get your sundaes from 7-9 and then listen to the live music. 9/1 – Sapphire – “THE 80’s Tribute Band”
  • Sunset Park Party Nights: August 29The Dunehounds – “Jam Band”
  • Octopus Hunt on the Boardwalk ends September 30
  • Naõ Trinidadsailing 9/1 – After spending most of the summer in Ocean City, Labor Day weekend is your last chance to tour the Naõ Trinidad, a replica of Magellan’s fated ship.

The Shore Craft Beer Cruises – a sunset cruise with 2 beers included for only $40 – run through the end of September.

Be sure to enjoy the Maryland sunshine, play on our white sand beaches and just relax while you still can. Boardwalk businesses and rides will still be open and the Ocean City Beach Patrol will remain on duty throughout the weekend (in-stand from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), so head to the beach and enjoy one last dip in the Atlantic.

The Town of Ocean City hosts Sundaes in the Park for the last time this Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. You can find live music, ice cream sundaes (of course) and sometimes a few surprises, too.

Story Haensler – Sundaes in the park the weekend I bought my first beach house 7/18/21

Nature

Since the temperatures are soon to drop, Labor Day weekend is a fantastic time to take one last pontoon ride or jet ski out on the water. Consider taking a thrilling trip on the bay at Odyssea Watersports, or try a nature tour on the OC Bay Hopper.    The OC Bay Hopper offers many options, but will host the Shore Craft Beer Cruises  every Thursday until September 28th.    In addition to the sunsets, you usually see the wild ponies of Assateague, lots of cool birds, and even dolphins.  No guarantees – but your odds are good!

Nightlife

Obviously a holiday weekend means live music and taking advantage of happy hour specials, so be sure to check out the special events happening at venues like Seacrets or one of the 15 fabulous OCMDrestaurants with indoor or outdoor restaurants from the Wedge to the Captain’s Table or one of the pool bars with great drinks and great views.  The Angler offers a great happy hour with 2 drinks for the price of 1 (You get them both at once so plan accordingly) and if you want to add a sunset cruise on the Angler boat, you can do so for only $10!  Totally worth it for a trip out the inlet and up the beach so you can see the skyline of Ocean City with the setting sun behind it!

Family Fun

Because most local amusements are still open on weekends through September, you’ll still be able to visit  Baja Amusements and The Escape Room, or one of the many other exciting options.  If you’re looking for less thrill and a little more chill, treat your family to a game of mini golf at Nick’s Mini Golf or any one of the many indoor and outdoor courses that Ocean City has to offer.

It’s always sad to see the summer go, but one last weekend trip to OC is the perfect way to ring in a new season.

And if you still need a hotel room…

These are some of our favorite hotels that still have rooms if you want to spend just one more weekend at the beach.  Check out OceanCity.com’s area guide to ensure you find the perfect location for your trip.

BLOOD BANK OF DELMARVA CALLS FOR BLOOD DONORS AHEAD OF LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Starting Wednesday, August 28th, all who come to donate have a chance to win a $3,000 Target gift card

DELMARVA – As Labor Day Weekend approaches, Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) is urging the community to prioritize blood donation and help save lives when the need is especially critical. The summer months, especially around holiday weekends like Labor Day, often see a dip in blood donations due to vacations and end-of-summer activities, and as families shift their focus to preparing for the new school year, blood donation tends to be overlooked.

“We often see a drop in donations around Labor Day, but the demand for blood doesn’t take a holiday,” said Steven Corse, Executive Director at Blood Bank of Delmarva. “We encourage all who are eligible to take just an hour of their time to donate blood and make a huge impact on the lives of patients in our community.”

To combat these challenges, all who come to donate from Wednesday, August 28th to Wednesday, September 4th will be entered to win a $3,000 Target gift card. All BBD donor centers and blood drives are participating in the sweepstakes, making it easy for donors to find a convenient location to give.

Donors can qualify for the Target gift card sweepstakes by coming to donate at one of the following blood drives or any of BBD’s neighborhood donor centers. Terms and conditions can be found here

  • Town of South Bethany, Wednesday, August 28th, 10am – 3pm (Sign up HERE)

○      402 Evergreen Rd., Bethany Beach, DE 19930

For a full list of blood drives during this timeframe, or to make an appointment at a location near you, donors can visit delmarvablood.org or call 1.888.8.BLOOD.8.

Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines, click here call 1.888.825.6638.

Ocean City Boardwalk Tram – Services Suspended

Boardwalk Tram in Ocean City Md

Ocean City Officials Express Condolences, Suspend BoardwalkTram Services Until Further Notice

OCEAN CITY, MD – (August 21, 2024):  The Town of Ocean City has suspended all boardwalk tram services until further notice following the fatal collision involving a 2-year-old child that occurred on Tuesday, August 20.

Mayor Rick Meehan expressed his deepest condolences on behalf of the Town. “There are no words to convey the profound sadness we feel for the family and their unimaginable loss. We are devastated and heartbroken. Ocean City is a tight-knit community, and we grieve together in times like these. We are committed to supporting the family and ensuring that everything possible is done to prevent such tragedies in the future.”

The Town is fully cooperating with law enforcement and relevant authorities in their ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Town asks the community to join us in keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers during this time of mourning.

The Unthinkable Loss

The incident, which tragically claimed the life of a young child, has left the community in mourning. While investigations continue, the town made the decision to suspend the boardwalk tram operations indefinitely.

An Uncertain Future

The town’s official statement offers little clarity, “Until further notice, Boardwalk Trams will not be operating. A potential date for service restoration has not yet been determined. We apologize for any inconvenience.” Unofficial sources suggest the suspension may extend through the end of the year.  You can check the Town’s statement here.

An Ocean City Tradition

Historic picture of the Ocean City Boardwalk Tram
Collection of the Ocean City Museum Society

Introduced in 1964, the tram celebrated its 60th anniversary this year.  Originally, the tram offered an affordable 25-cent ride along the lively boardwalk. Its purpose was straightforward: provide convenient transportation amidst the vibrant atmosphere and picturesque ocean views. However, as Ocean City grew, the tram’s importance grew with it and so did the crowds that share the Boardwalk.  The Boardwalk tram ensures easy access to the countless attractions lining the boardwalk for those who cannot or choose not to walk the boards.

The Impact of Absence

Boardwalk Tram

For those with mobility challenges, navigating the boardwalk has become significantly more difficult without the Boardwalk Tram.   However, the safety of every visitor in Ocean City is paramount.

Balancing Safety and Tradition

The Town is investigating the accident and how they can balance the competing needs of our community.  Safety of our visitors and residents is first and accessibility for all is vital.  As soon as the Town of Ocean City makes any announcements, OceanCity.com will update the Boardwalk Tram service and schedule information.

Childhood Memories Rekindled: Ocean City Vacation Spot Found After 56 Years!

Earlier this week, one of our Facebook Followers asked us if we could find out if his childhood vacation spot in Ocean City was still there. When he was around 5 years old, back in 1967, his family visited Ocean City for the first time and stayed in a condo called “Half Dozen”. At that time, it was considered in the very north of the resort, around 91st or 92nd street, one block off the ocean. He asked us if there was anyone who could help him find this building, or at least the spot where it once stood. We reached out to several people, and also to followers on our Facebook page, to see if anyone could help him. We discovered from Buck Mann, property manager and long time Ocean City resident, that back in the day there were many 6 unit buildings, 3 up side by side, that were referred to as “6 packs”, so we thought possibly this same style of building could have been known as “half dozens”.  Although this was interesting information, is was not helping our friend find his childhood vacation spot. Our Facebook followers were also unable to help pinpoint this specific condo building.

Then we had a breakthrough! Cara, at the Ocean  City Life Saving Station was going through a pile of donations that had come through the very day we asked her if she had heard of Half Dozen, and she saw a guidebook titled “1971 Vacation Rental Catalog, Ocean City, Maryland.” She decided to see if the Half Dozen condo was listed since it fit within the timeframe, and voila! There is was, in all it’s black and white brochure glory!

Old advertisement for Half Dozen condos in Ocean City Md

It was perfect timing, all the planets lined up, and our friend got to see his childhood vacation spot. The ad mentions that the condo has ceramic tile baths, is hardwood paneled through out, has an automatic washer and has wall to wall carpet! The weekly rates are:

May – June 19th $125 per week,

June 19th- July 3rd $175 per week,

July 3 – September 4 – $235 per week, and

Sept 4 – October $125 per week.

We know, you don’t have to say it, prices have gone up since then!  But you have to remember this was 1971, 53 years ago, so we were all earning a lot less then!

We told our friend of the lucky find, and now knowing the exact street to search, he went on Google Maps, and would you believe it, the building is still there!

Half Dozen as it is now, in 2024!

So there is a happy ending to this story. Our friend told us “I am in tears. I can’t wait to stop by there on my next visit, and go down to the end of the street and climb the dune. Thank you again!”

We say thank you to Cara at the Ocean City Life Saving Station, and thank you to all the developers who did not decide to pull this building down and re-develop this part of Ocean city Md!

Navigating the Route 50 Bridge in Ocean City, Maryland

0
The Route 50 Bridge, spanning the southern entrance of Ocean City, Maryland, is a vital and distinctive structure that facilitates both vehicular and marine traffic. This movable bridge, officially known as the Harry W. Kelley Memorial Bridge, serves as a crucial link between the mainland and the popular beach destination, and its operations are integral to both local transportation and maritime activities.

Open on :55 and :25 Schedule

timelapse of route 50 bridge white marlin open
The Route 50 Bridge allows passengers to cross from the mainland to Ocean City, MD at the south end.

During the peak tourist season, from May to October, the Route 50 Bridge opens on a regular schedule to accommodate marine traffic. Specifically, the bridge opens at 55 minutes past the hour and 25 minutes past the hour. This routine allows boats to pass through without significant delays. However, for those seeking to avoid getting caught in traffic when the bridge is up, it’s wise to plan around these times. On the rare occasion that boats need to pass under the bridge outside of these regular intervals, such as during special events, the schedule may be adjusted. Notably, during the White Marlin Open, a major fishing tournament, the bridge’s schedule can be altered to accommodate the influx of marine traffic. For instance, on the Wednesday of the White Marlin Open, the bridge tender delayed the 8:55 p.m. opening until 9:00 p.m. to allow the Moore Bills boat to reach the scales on time without having to open the bridge twice.

Will Call

Tara Ann – This beautiful sunset heading over the bridge from OCMD.

In the off-season, from late October to April, the bridge operates on a call-ahead basis. Boat operators must notify the bridge tender in advance to ensure their passage. This system allows the bridge tenders to manage traffic efficiently and ensures that the bridge remains functional with minimal disruption.

Monitoring and Operating

Megan Finnerty – “Sacramento, CA 3073” sign on the bridge.

The bridge is manned 24 hours a day during the busy season, with staff working 8-hour shifts. This staffing level increases to five bridge tenders to handle the high volume of traffic. In contrast, during the off-season, the number of tenders is reduced to three, reflecting the decreased traffic and operational needs. The tenders follow a precise procedure to open the bridge: they first stop land traffic, then release the red and white gates, disengage the bridge’s brakes, and sound the horn twice. Monitoring is continuous, with tenders observing both land and marine traffic via windows and multiple cameras stationed around the bridge. When the bridge is closed, metal teeth lock into place, with one side overlapping the other and metal pins securing the structure together.

Crank by Hand

A walk over the Rt 50 Bridge – kids love it! Leave the car at the Park and Ride in West Ocean

Interestingly, if mechanical issues arise, there is a manual crank system that can be used to open the bridge if needed. This backup system underscores the bridge’s robust design and the measures in place to ensure it remains operational even in emergencies.

Bridges in General

Victoria Sadler – Rt 50 drawbridge coming into Ocean City

Made of metal, the bridge’s structure expands and contracts with temperature changes. This can sometimes result in friction and heat buildup, particularly in high traffic conditions. In extreme cases, firefighters may need to hose down the metal to help it cool and contract properly after opening.

Right of Way Law

Kristie Becker – Taking a sunset cruise on the Judith M under the Rt 50 drawbridge! My 7 year old loved the front the boat!

Fun fact: per Coast Guard regulations, marine traffic has the right of way over land traffic, a rule that emphasizes the bridge’s role in supporting maritime activities.

For those navigating the Route 50 Bridge, understanding its operation can make your travel experience smoother. Whether you’re a driver or a boater, knowing the schedule and operational procedures can help you plan your journey more effectively and avoid unnecessary delays.

Thank you to bridge tender Melissa Powell a former 911 dispatcher/supervisor in Worcester County, Mark Crampton (MDOT), and George Norfolk (MDOT) for meeting and showing me the ins and out the our incredible little bridge that could.
