Worthwhile Training

Sebastian Arcara, who has been flying for over 13 years, brings a wealth of expertise to Cloud Dancer BiPlane Rides. His journey to becoming a pilot began with rigorous training, involving a minimum of 40 flight hours to achieve a private pilot’s license. For those pursuing a commercial license, a minimum of 250 flight hours is required. But flying the Waco YMF-5 biplane demands even more specialized endorsements and years of practice, making Sebastian’s role all the more impressive.

A Dream Job

Sebastian, your knowledgeable pilot, shows off how to climb aboard.

When not soaring above Ocean City, Sebastian is home in Florida, where he flies aerobatics in a vintage 1941 Waco. His work there involves performing exhilarating aerobatic maneuvers and giving the public a taste of high-flying adventure. Despite his varied flying experiences, Sebastian’s passion for being a pilot remains undiminished. “Being a pilot is absolutely my dream job,” he shares. “The freedom of the sky and the ability to break away from the earth is unmatched. There’s no place I’d rather be than up there.”

A Day on the Bay with Bayside Boat Rentals

Why Rent a Pontoon Boat?

There’s no shortage of boats out on the bay around Ocean City. Some are privately owned, but others are rented. Lazing away the days on the beach is great, but if you are looking for something a little different, something that brings the family together and can be as active or passive as you wish, then renting a boat for a couple of hours, or even a day, seems like a good idea. Since the thought of renting a pontoon boat may feel a little daunting to some, we decided to give it a try, and see just how easy it is.
Bayside Boat Rentals on 53rd Street

Why Bayside Boat Rentals are the Best of Ocean City®

We headed straight to family run Bayside Boat Rentals on 54th street, right next to Macky’s. They are known for their pontoon boat rentals, as well as their jet ski rentals. In fact, Bayside Boat Rentals has won Best Boat Rental in the Best of Ocean City® for 2024, and in many previous years too. Chad and Jackie Cutlip, the owners, have run the business for some 20 plus years. Along with their 3 children who have grown up behind the counter in the office and are now teenagers, they have around 15 employees each season, many of whom have worked with them for years; a testament to the great working environment at Bayside Boat Rentals. Chad and Jackie keep in touch with old staff, attend their weddings, hold their babies and see them while on family vacations!  They run their business and treat their staff and customers just like they run their household, says Jackie, “… with respect, honesty, fairness and tons of laughs!”

How it all began

It all started in 1999, when Chad’s mom took a chance and bought a pre-existing business, knowing nothing about the industry, and gave it a go with Chad and his older brother.  After several years of ups and downs and another owner change, Chad and Jackie purchased it out right. It has been the two of them putting their hearts and souls into the business, and never giving up since then.  They have built Bayside Boat Rentals into what it is today. Many have helped along the way, and if you read their reviews, you will see just why they are the Best of Ocean City® for boat rentals.

How easy is it to rent a pontoon boat?

Bayside Boat Rentals operates on a reservation-only basis, and they have been at this for so long that they have the check-in process down to a science! The driver must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license to operate the boats or jet skis.  The pontoon boats are very easy to maneuver and are on the slower side which makes them very easy for new drivers. The staff at Bayside Boat Rentals give PLENTY of instructions to safely operate the boat, and, on our visit, Jason went through everything you could possibly need to know. There is also the reassurance that Bayside Boat Rentals is only a phone call and a few minutes away should anyone need assistance during their rental.  The boats are capable of holding 8-12 passengers, as long as your entire party is UNDER the coast guard approved weight limit on the boat, so when renting, make sure you have an accurate head count at time of booking.

Getting all the paperwork completed before heading out to the boat
Instructions on driving the boat safely are given on and off the boat before you take it out

Where to go once you are out on the Boat?

When you rent your pontoon boat from Bayside Boat Rentals, you have 7 miles of beautiful bay to explore.  The rental location is in mid-town Ocean City on 54th street, and you can go as far south as the RT 50 bridge, (but not past it).  You can go as far north as the Delaware state line and the RT 54 bridge at Harpoon Hannas, and everywhere in between! Watch out for the sandbars near the Rt50 Bridge when the tide is low, it’s possible to get stuck on them!

You can have a relaxing day of fishing, crabbing or just cruising the bay. Bring a cooler and have a picnic on the water. We stopped on the St Martin River, by a little sandy cove, anchored the boat and took a swim. We weren’t the only ones doing this, it seemed a popular spot to relax.

A sandy cove on the St Martin River, perfect for a swim
Under the Rt90 Bridge

We also took the boat down some of the canals in North Ocean City where there were plenty of beautiful houses lining the waterways.  We picked out the ones we would want to own if we ever won the lottery!

The quiet bays lined with beautiful houses

Bayside Boat Rentals buys new boats every year, so their entire fleet is in great shape and all of their equipment is always properly maintained. Our boat was clean and in perfect working order. Our driver thoroughly enjoyed his time behind the wheel, and the rest of our party felt like we were living the life, as we sat back with the wind gently blowing our hair, and took in the sights!

Bayside Boat Rentals have a saying, ” BAYSIDE 4 LIFE,”  and once you join their family, you are in it for life!  Whether you work for them, or rent from them, you will certainly want to keep coming back!

Here’s where to vote for Bayside Boat Rentals for this years Best of Ocean City®

Stone Cutter Continues to Triumph at the White Marlin Open: A Historic Blue Marlin Victory

In the competitive world of deep-sea fishing, few events rival the excitement and prestige of the White Marlin Open. This year, the 55′ Viking boat “Stone Cutter,” owned by Paul Menzi, captured the spotlight with a stunning victory in the Blue Marlin category. The Stone Cutter’s impressive catch—a colossal 897.5-pound blue marlin—has so far clinched first place and a staggering $518,000 prize, while also setting a record as the fourth heaviest blue marlin in the event’s history.

Mistaken Identity

There is no mistaking this big blue marlin on board The Stone Cutter.

We had the opportunity to speak with Joe Wyatt, one of the anglers aboard Stone Cutter. Wyatt, a seasoned fisherman with years of experience, shared the thrilling story behind their remarkable catch. “It was a ride like no other,” Wyatt recalled. “When we first saw that fin break the surface, we thought it might be a whale or something due to its size. But then we realized we were hooked on a massive blue marlin when it jumped out of the water.”

A Stubborn Fight

This blue marlin took 2 1/2 hours to reel in, caught by Lance Blakemore.

The battle began when the marlin crashed the spreader, an early sign of the fierce struggle that was to follow. Angler Lance Blakemore faced an intense challenge. Despite a fierce effort, the marlin proved to be stubborn and elusive. “We had the liter on the fish eight different times,” Wyatt said. “Each time, it would make a powerful run and shake free. It was a grueling fight, but we never gave up.”

A Memorable First

Posing with the record breaking fish, Lance Blakemore couldn’t have asked for a better first marlin.

Blakemore, who had never caught a marlin before, was at the heart of the action. Secured in the fighting chair for two and a half hours of reeling, other anglers hosed him off to keep him cool while passing bottles of water to keep him hydrated.

Not So Fast…

The Stone Cutter’s blue marlin, weighing in at 897.5 pounds, soon established itself as the leading contender. However the following day the excitement was tempered by the knowledge that another boat, Moore Bills, had also reported a large blue marlin catch. As Moore Bills approached the dock, around 9pm, the Stone Cutter crew held their breath, anxiously awaiting the weigh-in results.

Just Shy

Lance Blakemore poses with the bill while Brad Marlin shows off the blue marlin tail.

When the scale revealed that Moore Bills’ blue marlin weighed 894 pounds—just 3.5 pounds lighter than Stone Cutter’s catch—the crew’s relief and elation were palpable. “We were on edge until we saw the weight of the competing fish. Knowing we had the heavier marlin was a huge relief. We got to celebrate all over again!”

There’s No “I” in Team

Wyatt and family pose with the fish- they’re always their number one supporters back here on land!

The successful catch was a true team effort. Director of the Deck Brad Martin played a crucial role in steering the Stone Cutter during the battle. “Brad’s direction was vital in keeping us on track and ensuring we were positioned correctly to handle the marlin,” Wyatt explained. “Paul Menzi’s leadership and Brad’s skillful guidance were key to landing that fish.”

The Stone Cutter’s victory was not just a testament to the crew’s skill and perseverance but also a proud moment for Paul Menzi and his team. The blue marlin will long be remembered not only for its size but also for the way it captured the essence of competitive fishing. With a record-setting weight and a substantial prize, this catch has solidified its place in the annals of White Marlin Open history.

Let’s Try to Hold Onto It

A great celebration on Stone Cutter. They’re hoping to keep the lead in the blue marlin category.

As the tournament continues and the competition remains fierce, the Stone Cutter crew can bask in the glory of their remarkable achievement. With two more days left at the scales, it’s always a game of luck. Jim Mostco always says, “Anyone can get lucky and catch a fish.”

For boat number 216- Paul Menzi, Joe Wyatt, Lance Blakemore, Brad Martin, and the entire Stone Cutter team, this victory is a proud chapter in their fishing careers—a testament to their skills, teamwork, and passion for the sport. The excitement of the White Marlin Open will surely be remembered for years to come, with the Stone Cutter’s achievement standing out as a highlight of the event.

White Marlin Open: Day 4- Last Minute Blue Marlin on Moore Bills Rockets to 2nd Place

It’s the 4th day of the White Marlin Open and crowds are getting excited to see some more movement on the scales. With 196 boats fishing today, fans crossed their fingers as boats began to make their way back to the Ocean City Inlet.

The Billfisher Does It Again

It was an early day at the scales for The Billfisher. Coming in at the earliest time this week for any boat (around 4:10), they bragged about a white marlin on board. As they approached the scales, the crowd was full of anticipation. The marlin was hoisted up awaiting a number. At the time the current first place white marlin was 77.5 pounds. The scale blinked a number into place at 76 pounds- catapulting the white into 2nd place. Crowds cheered and screamed at their excitement! The Billfisher had delivered some movement!

Blue Fin Tuna Appearance

Keep “er” Wet came to the scales a little later on bringing in a bluefin tuna, a tuna we don’t see a lot of during the White Marlin Open. Andy Motsco suspects the frigid ocean temperatures we’ve been having kept them near by Ocean City.

Later in the evening, a boat very familiar with the scales- RoShamBo showed up ready to weigh in a tuna! Not placing on the leaderboard with millions, but the fish came in worth about $50,000.

Matlin Fest Last Day

Meanwhile down at Marlin Fest, spectators sipped their orange crushes and perused the tents purchasing “Bob Marlin” apparel and WMO t-shirts. Fans of the White Marlin Open relaxed in the sand as MJ’s first slid in with a 187 pound tuna along with a 193.5 pound tying for second with Warden Pass. Thursday was the last day for Marlin Fest as windy weather caused the event to close on Friday.

More Tuna to the Scales

Dutch Boy brought in a tuna weighing in at 142.5 pounds around 7pm. Slab Daddy cruised into Harbour Island with a big eye tuna. And fun fact- back in 2020 the owner of Slab Daddy brought in the only swordfish in the White Marlin Open. He took the entire category winnings and bought the boat.

Mentioning the small boat category, Split Bill came barreling in with 2 tuna weighing in at just a half a pound away from each other, 118 and 118.5!

Whiskey Kilo finally makes an appearance, carrying the premiere sponsor, Pure Lure owner Brendan Hanley. The team came in with an amazing Allison tuna at 185.5 pounds. Hanley graciously decked out the dock team in WMO/ Pure Lure gear and the crowd with ”Show Us Your Marlin” foam shakas!

No Limit out of Delaware makes another trip to the dock, weighing in a fish each day of fishing this tournament with a 112.5 pound tuna and a 146.5 tuna.

Last Minute Blue Marlin Makes Waves at the Scales

Around 8pm, Andy Motsco announced that a boat had called in with a very, very large blue marlin on board. At the time, they weren’t sure if they’d be able to get the dock by the closing time. The crowd waiting in suspense as the clock ticked closer and closer to the closing of the scales.

Because the boat, Moore Bills, had hooked the fish before closing of the scales, the fish was still weighable. They had been in contact with the White Marlin Open as they barreled their way through rough waters to make it back to Ocean City. Andy Motsco announced around 9pm that Moore Bills was only 1 mile away! Murmurs were spreading through the scales anticipating a huge catch.

Harbour Island Marina is in bay side of Ocean City and boats need to go under the route 50 bridge. The bridge tender has to stop traffic and lift the bridge in order for larger boats like Moore Bills to get through. By the time the boat reached the bridge, the tender had already lifted the bridge to help save time to get back to the anxious crowd and dock hands.

Air horns, cheers, and flashing cameras gave Moore Bills the red carpet welcome and treatment as they approached the pier with a large tail fin hanging out the back of the transom. Crew and dock hands took their time to meticulously measure the monster bill fish, the tail fin actually getting stuck due to the sheer size of the width. But dock crew carefully maneuvered the tail out, wrapped it to the scale, and the enormous fish was hoisted up for crowds to see. Higher…higher…and higher the scale climbed into the high 800s finally flashing at 894 pounds rocketing the boat to 2nd place, just 3.5 pounds shy of tying for first place with Stone Cutter, who weighed in am 897.5 pound blue earlier this week.

Moore Bills talked to Andy Motsco about the fishing and boating experience. They told him that they hooked her early on and she took them on a 7 hour fight for the day. When finally at the boat, it took the anglers and crew an hour alone just to get her on the boat. At this time this 2nd place fish is worth roughly $400,000.

We have 2 more days of fishing. Let’s see what else they can bring us to end The White Marlin Open with a bang!

Can you Win Money Even if You Don’t Have the Biggest Fish?

white marlin open billfish tuna marlin
Day 2 of the 51st WMO set a record for the 4th largest blue marlin in tournament history.

In the White Marlin Open, the thrill of victory isn’t just about bragging rights—it’s about big money. Anglers compete for a massive purse (payout), with millions of dollars on the line.  In 2024 alone, the purse is worth $8.5 million! The prize money is awarded based on the weight of the qualifying fish caught, with the heaviest fish in each category taking home the largest shares. However, it’s not just about catching the biggest fish; strategic entry into added entry levels can significantly boost a team’s potential earnings. These added entry levels, which require additional fees, offer the chance to win even more money if a qualifying fish is caught. The result is a complex and exciting competition where strategy and skill are equally important.

Catch 23 is Slated to Get Money as of Now

catch 23 - michael jordan boat 2020
Although Michael Jordan’s boat, Catch 23 has been upgraded for 2024, his signature paint job is the same and he is projected to get a payout for his fish in 2024 – at least as of today.

Pay-Out Predictions Change Day-to-Day

The White Marlin Open leaderboard is a dynamic landscape, constantly shifting as boats return to the scales with their catches. As of Day 4, the Waste Knot holds the lead with a 77.5-pound white marlin, but the potential payout of $4.182 million could easily be eclipsed if a heavier marlin is brought in. Several other boats are also in the running, with a chance to jump to the top depending on their catches in the remaining days of the tournament. While the blue marlin category boasts impressive catches exceeding 780 pounds, they don’t affect the overall leaderboard, which focuses on the white marlin. Additionally, a 220.5-pound bigeye tuna holds a commanding lead in its category, with a potential payout exceeding $1 million. With two days left in the tournament, the leaderboard remains fluid, and any catch could dramatically alter the standings and potential payouts. The excitement lies in the unpredictable nature of the competition, where a single fish could change everything.

Full Leaderboard is available on the White Marlin Open site.  Check out the estimated pay-outs by boat.

How Tropical Storm Debby Could impact the White Marlin Open and the Beaches in Ocean City

tropical storm debby path
Tropical storm Debby’s main impact is mostly inland of Ocean City. For more details, go to Weather.com

It appears that Ocean City is escaping some of the worst potential impacts of Tropical Storm Debby.  There will still be riptides along the beaches.  The NOAA weather forecast is showing some marine impacts that will affect the anglers who are out hunting the big fish throughout the White Marlin Open.  Thursday and Friday are the worst.  Seas could build to 8-13 feet offshore.  Here is the breakdown by day of the fishing conditions according to NOAA

As for the weather in Ocean City for the week, the forecast has improved.  It’ll be a great weekend but keep your eyes out for riptides and swim only when the beach patrol guards are in their stands.

White Marlin Open 2024: Day 3- Show Me Your Tuna!

The weather was cloudy and sticky. But the rain did as best it could to hold off for The White Marlin Open. The rain came in about an hour before the scales. With 279 boats fishing, today had a promise for big numbers coming to the scales.

Talkin’ Trash with 9 Tuna!

Lots of tuna coming to the scales on day 3 of the WMO.

The first boat to show up was Talkin’ Trash flying 5 tuna flags! They weighed in a bunch of tuna- a 185.5 pound taking 2nd place and another 182 pound taking 4th! When talking with Andy Motsco, they mentioned at one point, they were fighting 9 fish at once!

The Right Place at the Right Time

There was a lot of movement in the tuna category today. Several sizable tuna came to the scales.

The Right Place slid into the scales around 6:15 with a big eye to weigh. They brought in a 166 pound tuna on Monday that held the 2nd place spot until today. After hoisting the tuna up, it weighed in at a heavy 191 pounds taking 2nd place!

White Marlin at the Scales

From this angle, you can see just how many people are involved in this production.

Soon after, the crowds oooed and aaahhd as Andy Motsco announced a boat was on their way in flying a white marlin boated flag! One upside down white marlin flag boasting a white marlin release while another indicated a boated white marlin. But after weighing the billfish they missed the qualifying weight by a few pounds. The qualifying weight is 70 pounds and they came up just shy at 62 ½.

Running in Again

The 51st White Marlin Open hosted at Harbour Island.

No stranger to the docks and scales, Blue Runner came in around 6:43 weighing in a smaller tuna. They are currently the boat to beat in the tuna division with a 220 pound tuna from earlier in the week. Today they brought in 2 more tuna, one weighing in at 132 pounds and another at 170 1/2. Neither would get them high enough on the leader board at this time. But we were glad to see them back at the scales for day 3!

Warden Passes to 2nd Place

Warden Pass came in around 7 o’clock excited to show their catch for today! They reported getting jumped by 5 tuna at the same time, lost 3, and boated 2. This tuna they weighted sky rocketed to 2nd place with an fat weight of 193.5 pounds!

A Small Boat Reminder

One thing we can’t forget about is the small boat category! And Covered Up let us know about it! Cruising into the scales with a solid tuna on board, anglers weighed in a 164 pound tuna taking first place in the small boat tuna category. That tuna is currently worth $1,000.

There’s No Limit to the Times at the Scale

No Limit out of Delaware made another appearance at the scales bringing in a 160.5 big eye tuna. No change on the scales but a good fight was had! Another fat Allison tuna came in by truck weighing in at 114 pounds.

Lovin’ The Donations

Lovin’ Life came in with a donated yellow fin and weighed a 156 pound big eye tuna!

Wrappin’ Up for Day 3

Day 2 of the 51st WMO set a record for the 4th largest blue marlin in tournament history.

Overall the day turned out to be a nice and relaxing day on all ends of The White Marlin Open. The rain tapered off while the boats came in and fish came to the scales. Lots of movement in the tuna category and a big success for Covered Up in the small boat category. And that’s a wrap on Day 3!

Captains Talk with OceanCity.com About The Week and The Weather

This week’s weather for the White Marlin Open has been as wavy as the offshore swells. Captains are having to make decisions based on weather apps, reports, and experience. 100 boats decided not to go out on Monday due to high winds reported, however when mother nature knows there’s a tournament, she liked to throw these captains for a loop. We talked to Captain David Midgett of All In Sportfishing about his decision to take a lay day on Monday in addition to several other decisions he’s had to make with Tropical Storm Debby approaching.

White Marlin Open Day 2: Finally Some Bill Fish at the Scales

Last year’s White Marlin Open was a celebration of their 50th year. However the scales were pretty dry of any billfish until the end end of the week.

Waste Knot at the Scales

Today brought in the billfish! Pretty early at the scales Waste Knot treated everyone to an appearance at 4:45 with the first white marlin to the scales! The beautiful fish weighed in at 77 pounds and is currently worth $4 million!

Jetty Girl in the Small Boat Category

Weather on land was windy with gusts up to 27mph. This makes for offshore conditions even more dicey. But that didn’t stop Jetty girl out of White Marlin Marina bring in a gorgeous yellow fin tunas later on in the day. The tuna weighed in at 64 pounds, over the 50 pound limit and at the time took the money for top daily and top small boat category winning what they hoped would stay at a cool $100,000!

Blue Marlin History

And HERE is where is happened! History was made when Stone Cutter slid into the scales, excited to show the dock what they had for them. The first blue marlin came on land and made a White Marlin Open record! Stone Cutter was out trolling when the massive fish hit the bait and took them on a 2 ½ hour fight! The experience was a group effort for sure. The 897.5 pound blue marlin took a record for the 5th largest blue marlin ever caught in WMO history. The anglers celebrated and told Andy Motsco, “they knew they had a big one!”

More Blue Marlin

BUT! Not to be out celebrated Bobojo came right being them at 6:45 ready for the scales! With an incredible 789 pound blue marlin on board, Bobojo took second place for the blue marlin category.

Tuna and Mahi End the Evening

Shortly after Blue Runner came to Harbour Island showing off a 220.5 tuna- snagging 1st place! The hour fight they endured is worth $1 million! A fight worth fighting for in my opinion!

Weighing in at 31 pounds, Double Nickel brought a dolphin to the scale. Then Restless Lady 2 shows up! With several big eye tuna, they brought in the 5th largest tuna of the day. After that No Limit shows up nabbing 2nd place in the tuna category with a 183 pound tuna!

Thanks Buds, a 100 foot contender in the White Marlin Open, navigated into the scales to weigh in a 157.5 big eye tuna. Captain Brian Buckley got major props from spectators including Andy Motsco!
