Celebration Giveaway for

200,000 LIKES on Facebook

During Ocean City Dreaming Concert OceanCity.com said ‘Thank you’ to fans

During this turbulent time of closures, OceanCity.com worked to address the needs of Ocean City lovers online, and it paid off.  Fans of Ocean City brought OceanCity.com‘s LIKES to over 200,00 on Facebook this week. OceanCity.com works hard to achieve the most consistent user engagement of any Facebook page devoted to Ocean City.  To celebrate,  OceanCity.com rewarded fans with  a 2 night stay at the Commander Hotel as well as gift certificates to the Shrimp Boat.  The prizes were given to page fans who joined the weekly Ocean City Dreaming concert with Bryan Russo on Facebook Live Thursday, May 28th.

I was super excited about winning the prize. My family and I enjoying visiting Ocean City. Our plans fell through for our vacation last year and winning the contest will help us get back to the place we love. The concert was fabulous. Can’t wait to get back down and hear live music in person. I read the posts on the OceanCity.com Facebook page daily and I use the website frequently when planning our vacation. Thank you again for this opportunity. ~  Lynn Leiby

Creativity and innovation defined OceanCity.com’s approach to providing virtual access to Ocean City to the hundreds of thousands of Ocean City lovers across our region.  The company highlighted the sights and sounds of Ocean City through their social media platforms, newsletters, and website. Since visitors could not come to Ocean City, OceanCity.com created as many virtual experiences as possible. The Thursday night “Ocean City Dreaming” concert series co-sponsored by OCDC and Shore Craft Beer created an event where the sponsors could bring Ocean City into the living rooms of  viewers. Glenn Irwin, Executive Director of Ocean City Development Corporation, was pleased with the results.

“The Ocean City Dreaming music series has been a great way to support local musicians, restaurants and craft beer. In this challenging time, all three of these businesses need our support.”

OceanCity.com also created a series of videos from local businesses with the message that the Town misses our visitors and are excited to welcome them back when it was safe. These short videos were posted on social media.   As soon as  Mayor Rick Meehan opened the hotels to visitors, OceanCity.com immediately launched the first ‘Welcome Back’ to Ocean City video which showcased area hotels and restaurants telling visitors that Ocean City was starting to open back up.  Mark Elman, General Manager of Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel loved the video.   “I think it was awesome. I definitely think it’s great for Ocean City and the Town itself. It gets the message out there and that’s what we are trying to do.”

OceanCity.com wants to thank its fans, partners, and clients for their support in reaching this milestone.

Winners during the Celebratory Concert:

  • Dee Pappas – $25 gift certificate to Shrimp Boat
  • Ron Locher – $25 gift certificate to Shrimp Boat
  • Lynn Leiby – 2 night stay at Commander Hotel

Lynn had this to say about winning the grand prize of the two night stay at the Commander Hotel, ” I was super excited about winning the prize. My family and I enjoying visiting Ocean City. Our plans fell through for our vacation last year, and winning the contest will help us get back to the place we love. The concert was fabulous. Can’t wait to get back down and hear live music in person. I read the posts on the OceanCity.com Facebook page daily, and I use the website frequently when planning our vacation. Thank you again for this opportunity.”

The Ocean City Fishing Pier

The Ocean City Fishing Pier is an iconic image in Ocean City, and whether you wish to use it to fish the Atlantic Ocean, or just want to take a walk along it and enjoy the view, it’s something that you should do at least once on a visit to Ocean City . It’s the only pier in Ocean City that extends into the Atlantic Ocean, and is connected to Jolly Roger’s at the Pier Amusement Park. The pier dates back to 1907, and has been battered and bruised several times by storms, burnt by fires, and frozen by ice.  It’s been shortened, lengthened and repaired again and again. The sun rises behind it, the waves crash against it,  there are spectacular views from it. We asked our friends on Facebook if they had any favorite photos of the Pier they could share with us, and as always, they obliged.

Now: Seal Spotting Ocean City

Seal is Hauling Out in Ocean City

(May 25, 2020) Police have marked off the area to keep people from getting too close. This is for the protection of the seal & people admiring the animal. We reached out to DNR so they are aware. Read below to find out why seals end up on the beach, and why people shouldn’t get close.

Seals Are Protected

Many do not know that seals are a protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Therefore,  it is illegal to touch, feed, or harass a seal. By keeping 50 yards away from a seal, you can best ensure that harassment or change in their behavior will not occur. If you encounter a seal that has hauled out, please contact Marine Animal Rescue Program at 410-576-3880 or 1-800-628-9944.

What is Hauling Out?

Seal haul out for many reasons, mating, giving birth, predator avoidance, thermal regulation, social activity, parasite reduction, and rest. A non-trained observer, may take in their cute faces and want a closer look, but seals in our area are often hauling due to rest or distress. Contact or run ins with humans and dogs on the beach put all at risk; as the seal is still a mammal that can have and pass viruses and diseases along to you or your pet.

Seal Steward Responsibility

When a seal hauls and MARP response team deems it healthy, the stewards take two -hour shifts watching the seal and making sure beach goers keep a safe distance. They are also there to provide specific information on the seal they are watching.

Keeping Track

If you see a seal in the bay, call call 410-213-2297 ext. 106 and it will be registered to keep track of sightings. UNLESS it is in distress, then please call MARP number above.

About the Artist: Bryan Russo

Bryan Russo has always worn a lot of hats and for many years, he wore them all pretty well. Yet, after a few years of struggle and reinvention,  the only stories the 2-time Edward R Murrow award winner is telling now are in song-form, –and they mark the deepest and strongest songs of his career. The former multi-award winning journalist (NPR, BBC, WAMU, Marketplace, host of Coastal Connection) has spent close to 20 years working diligently as a singer/songwriter in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US sharing the stage with more than 30 national recording artists and receiving high praise from critics and listeners on his five independent releases:

  • The Next Big Thing EP (2008)
  • Sound the Alarms (2012)
  • Here for the Show (2014)
  • Burden of Proof (2016)
  • Pennsyltucky (2018)

After the success and critical acclaim of his most recent release “Pennsyltucky” (read below), and with another Boys Called Susan album in the works, Russo will be releasing a brand new solo album in late  2020.

Ocean City Dreaming Artist – More Info: Bryan Russo

In 2018, Russo teamed up with his first cousin Christopher Shearer and recorded the highly acclaimed debut albumBryan Russo “Pennsyltucky” released as the band “Boys Called Susan”, which was named in homage of Shearer’s late mother Susan, who passed away from cancer in 2013. Her dying wish was for the boys to make music together, so they crowdfunded their way to Nashville to record at the legendary Butcher Shoppe recording studio with members of Emmylou Harris’ Red Dirt Boys as the studio band. The album, which was produced by Phil Madeira, has been spun on more than 60 radio stations across the US and Canada and received high critical marks both domestically and internationally. (www.boyscalledsusan.com for more info.)
Russo’s big bluesy voice wallops audiences with soulful lyrics that bite, but listeners and audiences have always been drawn to the depth in his lyrics, the hopefulness in the blues, and the way he can make a thinking song sound like a drinking song by blending smarts with satire. Russo’s song “Rodeo Cool”, which was released on the “Pennsyltucky” album was named as a top 5 finalist (out of more than 2000 domestic and international entries) in the ‘Country’ category of the 2019 Great American Song Contest, while his song from the same album “Unfinished Symphony” received honorable mention in the Folk/Americana category.

Creature Feature: Royal Tern

Coastal Bays Islands; They’re For the Birds!

Creature Feature: Royal Tern

Creature Feature
photo credit: Dave Brinker,DNR

While out boating, or enjoying a walk along the bay, you may have seen a bird hover over the water, then quickly dive and emerge with a wiggly fish in its beak.  Most likely, this was a royal tern, and they great fun to watch.  Royal terns are found in most coastal areas and make extensive annual migrations from the mid-Atlantic to Central and South America.  Maryland is around the northern extent of their breeding range, and unfortunately, these birds are in trouble.

Eggs are vulnerable

Since royal terns live along coastal areas, they have evolved a habit of laying their eggs in shallow depressions on bare sand between the high tide line and the coastal grasses.  Their eggs are sand colored and the birds nest in large colonies which helps to keep predators away.

Beaches are their ideal nesting area, however, shoreline development has driven the birds to nest on isolated islands.  But island

creature feature
photo credit: Dr. Roman Jesien,MCBP

nesting can be treacherous.  Storms with high water levels can wash away nests, and sea level rise and erosion have greatly reduced the number of islands in the coastal bays.  In fact, almost 300 acres of our island habitat have been lost in the past 25 years.

Because of island loss, numbers of royal tern breeding pairs have dropped drastically over the years.  Royal terns, and the other birds that nest on the ground on the islands such as common terns and black skimmers, are now listed as endangered in Maryland, and the coastal bays are the only place in Maryland these birds breed.  So, the islands that still exist in our local bays are extremely important for these birds.

How you can help the royal tern

creature feature
photo credit: Dr. Roman Jesien,MCBP

What you can do is please stay off the islands during the summer months. These birds should not be disturbed while they are nesting, and the public’s cooperation is of the utmost importance.  Due to the quarantine, warning signs have not put out on the islands yet, so please be aware and keep your distance.  Help us help the birds!

Princess Bayside Beach Hotel Is Ready to Welcome Guests

Princess Bayside Beach Hotel Open & Ready

New Renovations and Health Protocols

bayside hotel

(May 20, 2020) Princess Bayside Beach Hotel is happy to continue to welcome guests for their 2020 season. The staff has been working hard over the off-season and during the covid closure to enhance and ensure a great stay. Princess Bayside was open this past weekend, and by this past Saturday night 162 of the 194 rooms at Princess Bayside were booked. General Manager,  Matt Jones and Director of Sales, Danielle Rickett talked with us about the execution of their new plans in place to maintain social distancing, new cleaning standards, usual operations taken to prepare for the summer in the off-season, and of course how excited they are to see more guests this Memorial Day Weekend and beyond. “We really want to welcome our guests back to Ocean City.” said Jones, “We want them to have a great time and enjoy the outside. Our facility is right on the Bay and just steps away from the Ocean and Boardwalk. We are excited to see our guest enjoy all of it.”

Winter Deep Clean and Renovations

bayside hotelDuring the off-season an extensive overhaul of the entire building began like typical of every year. Minor renovations such as replacement of  some sofa beds, draperies, and carpets occurred. A deep cleaning was commenced throughout the full facility. The lobby was fully renovated complete with a beautiful new mural. These were actions much like previous years that prove Princess Bayside is committed to procuring a memorable and enjoyable stay for its patrons.

New Covid Safety Standards

The Princess Bayside was slated to open for St. Patrick’s Day Weekend and had all of its renovations and prep completed before the covid crisis had shut down the Town of Ocean City and the country. Knowing a new set of safety and health standards would need to be put in place the Princess Bayside has done the following to safeguard its guests and employees:

  • Curbside Check -in:Guests are now pre-paying for their rooms. When they arrive on the premises, they call the Princess Bayside to notify them of their arrival.  Masked security greets them at their car with a bag that includes key and welcome packet. New welcome packets review existing procedures and information along with new policies about social distancing in hotel.
  • Room keys will not be recycled until a method for proper sanitization happens.
  • Hand sanitizing stations have been set-up throughout the property and by all elevators.
  • Elevator capacity has been limited due to size of the elevator.
  • The front desk is now plexiglassed.
  • Housekeeping: Before covid the housekeeping staff cleaned every room and made it ready for the next guest, now everything is sanitized. Housekeeping does not enter the room for room refreshes. Instead guests have been asked to call the hotel and request any supplies. Any items needed like towels, wash clothes, toilet paper, etc. are placed in a bag and a staff member brings the fresh items to the guest’s room and knocks to let them know they are there. Dirty towels and linens are placed in a bag by the guests and left in the hall for staff to retrieve.
  • High touch items that were found in the room before like paper and pens are no longer there. If a guest requests a specific item then they only need to call and it will be brought to them.

Pool

Guests of the Princess Bayside Beach Hotel can take advantage of either of their pools. Both the indoor and rooftop pool with marvelous views will be available. Due to current state guidelines pools are limited to 10 people. Watching the Sun Set…

A sunset anywhere in the world can be amazing, but a sunset in Ocean City, when you have time to sit back and enjoy it, often from a balcony or restaurant, can be quite spectacular, and often a highlight of a special trip to the beach.  Although anywhere on the Bay side will be a great viewing point,  Fager’s Island is known for it’s ideal location to view this nightly phenomenon, with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture accompanying it in the background each night. We asked our friends on Facebook if they cared to share any of their Fager’s sunset pictures, so here they are!

Which Pools are Open in Ocean City

Pool Openings in Ocean City

Worcester County Gave Guidance

The answer to if a pool is open in Ocean City or beyond in Worcester County is…

Recreational pools are not open. Semi-public pools are open. Companies offering semi-public pools must adhere to the below guidelines, one of which is no more than 10 people in a pool. (For additional guidelines for semi-public pools please scroll to the end of the article.)

We asked for further guidance to determine what is recreational and what is semi-public. The County said most condominiums and hotels are classified as semi-public, but they do have some that are classified as recreational. Any facility that charges a fee or has water play equipment will fall under the recreational classification.

Here is the code regulations to determine classification:

Semi-public

The Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 10.17.01.05B(23) defines a semi-public pool or spa as:

(23) “Semipublic pool” and “semipublic spa” mean a pool or spa at a facility that:

(a) Has pool use or spa use restricted to an individual:

(i) Staying at the facility, where the facility is a temporary dwelling, including a hotel, motel, campground, bed and breakfast having nine or more guest rooms, or similar temporary dwelling;

(ii) Holding membership at the facility, where the facility is an adult health club, retirement community, marina, condominium, or similar facility;

(iii) Residing at an apartment complex, housing subdivision, or mobile home park with ten units or less;

(iv) Receiving treatment at a physical therapy center pool, or spa, where the pool or spa is used for providing therapy; or

(v) Who is the owner or an owner of the pool or spa; and

(b) Has a pool or spa that is not:

(i) Open for admission to the general public, except as provided in §B(23)(a) of this regulation;

(ii) Available to an individual upon the payment of a fee for the use of the pool and spa;

(iii) A limited public-use pool, a private pool, a private spa, or a recreational pool, as defined in §B(7), (17), and (18) of this regulation;

(iv) Equipped with a sliding board, diving platform, water slide, water flume, or water recreational play equipment that is built into or attached to the pool structure; and

(v) At a bed and breakfast that has eight or fewer guest rooms.

Recreational

The Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 10.17.01.05B(19) defines a semi-public pool or spa as:

(19) “Recreational pool” means a pool that:

(a) Is not a limited public-use pool, private pool, or semipublic pool, as defined in §B(7), (17), and (23) of this regulation;

(b) Is provided as the owner’s primary business or the facility’s primary purpose, for example, a swim club or similar facility;

(c) Is open for general admission to the public;

(d) Is available to an individual paying a fee for use of the pool;

(e) Is equipped with a sliding board, diving platform, water slide, water flume, or water recreational play equipment that is built into or attached to the pool structure;

(f) Is provided by, or used by a:

(i) Youth camp;

(ii) College, university, or school;

(iii) Municipality;

(iv) Water park, amusement park, or water recreational attraction as defined in §B(34) of this regulation; or

(v) An apartment complex, housing subdivision, or mobile home park with more than ten units, except as provided in §B(23)(a)(v) of this regulation; or

(g) Is used more than 4 times a week for swimming lessons, water safety instruction, or swimming competition.

Guidelines to open pools

Prepare the Facility/Grounds

  • Number of patrons will follow the capacity limit set by the Governor’s Executive order, currently this is 10 or fewer people so as not to constitute a large gathering.
  • Facility will track pool capacity using a sign in/out sheet or another appropriate method.
  • Implement physical distancing requirements between patrons or household groups at the facility, change deck layout to ensure that in the standing or seating areas, individuals or household groups can remain at least 6 feet apart.  No gatherings or events.
  • Implement physical distancing where patrons form a line waiting for the pool to open or for someone to leave so they can enter.
  • For indoor pools, meet current standards for ventilation and dehumidification, Increase introduction and circulation of outdoor air as much as possible by opening windows and doors, using fans or other methods. Do not open windows or doors if doing so poses a safety risk to staff or patrons.
  • Maintain supply of soap for hand washing and showers, and hand sanitizer.
  • Ensure that all water systems (e.g., drinking fountains, decorative fountains, heated pools) are safe to use after prolonged facility shutdown to minimize the risk of Legionnaires’ disease and other diseases associated with water.
  • Ensure there is adequate equipment for patrons and swimmers (e.g., kickboards and pool noodles) to minimize sharing to the extent possible, or limiting the use of equipment by one group of users at a time and cleaning and disinfecting between use.

Prepare the Employees

  • Staff who interact with patrons or other staff must wear face coverings.
  • Lifeguards should not wear face coverings in the water.
  • Provide and use one-way valve masks for CPR.
  • Monitor staff absenteeism, require staff to stay home if sick, have a plan to ensure required staffing. If possible, vulnerable staff should be allowed to telework.
  • For staff training, including lifeguard certification, maintain physical distancing and, except in the water, wear face coverings for in-person training.  Provide online training for classroom portions of training.  Train staff on new hygiene procedures.

Prepare your Patrons

  • Patrons should be alone or with members of their household.
  • Patrons should stay at least 6 feet apart (both in and out of the water) from other individuals not from their household.
  • At indoor pools, patrons should wear face coverings unless swimming or showering.
  • At outdoor pools, patrons should wear face coverings when interacting with staff or other individuals not from their household.
  • Patrons should not wear face coverings in the water.
  • Shared objects: patrons should be discouraged from sharing objects that are difficult to clean, sanitize, or disinfect or that are meant to come in contact with the face (for example, goggles, nose clips, and snorkels). Patrons should also be discouraged from sharing items such as food, equipment, toys, and supplies with those they don’t live with.

Signage/Communication

Cleaning and Disinfection

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as pool railings, deck furniture, water fountains, door knobs, and entry gates twice per day, and more often if needed due to the number of patrons.
  • Clean and disinfect in accordance with CDC and EPA guidelines on COVID-19 and product instructions.
  • Maintain daily cleaning of the facility (floors, toilets, etc.) with soap and water.
  • Train staff on guidelines and product instructions for cleaning and disinfecting.
  • Follow instructions for use and storage on the product label.
  • Disinfection products must be appropriate for the intended use.
  • The pool may need to temporarily close if the lifeguard on duty must clean and disinfect the pool area.
  • Facility will clean/brush pool tile/wall at the water line to reduce slime and biofilm once a week or more if needed.

Operation

  • Maintain chlorine and pH levels per current regulation, including shock or superchlorination as needed.
  • Notify the local health department that the pool will open, annual operation license is required per current regulation.

Maryland ‘s Safety Standards

Best Practices and Back to Business Pledge

The State of Maryland is asking business to sign the Back to Business Pledge, and adhere to Best Practices.  If businesses are pronouncing that they are ascribing to either here is what they state.

Ensure that sick leave policies are flexible and consistent with State and Federal law.

Maryland Strong Back to Business Pledge:

Maryland’s business community plays a critical role in protecting our citizens and preventing another surge of COVID-19 infections. Because we are committed to the safety and health of our valuable employees and customers, we pledge to:

  • Create an environment that allows for physical distancing between individuals (6 feet is recommended) to the extent possible.
  • Ensure our place of business is routinely cleaned and encourage our employees to frequently wash their hands.
  • Provide flexibility to our employees, provide training and education and clearly communicate policies and procedures.
  • Reduce and disinfect as many ‘high touch surfaces’ as possible.
  • Additionally follow guidance provided by the CDC, the Maryland Department of Health and our own industry.

Business are then ask to sign the pledge and post it to show compliance.

As the Governor states, ‘we are all in this together.’ As you can see we all have roles to play in keeping each other safe. Best Practices do not end at facilities or employees, but to all coming and going from the places we frequent.

Creature Feature: Maryland Coastal Bays Program

OceanCity.com loves everything Ocean City and the plant and animal life is just as important and mystifying to us as the beautiful sunrises on our beach. We know all of you feel the same way, and we love bringing you insight on all the life around us. It is our great pleasure to announce a new contributor to our Creature Features, Maryland Coastal Bays Program

About Maryland Coastal Bays Program:

Horseshoe Crabs on Skimmer Island. Photo by Zach Garmoe

The Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) is a non-profit that exists to protect and conserve the waters and surrounding watershed of Maryland’s coastal bays to enhance their ecological values and sustainable use for both present and future generations. MCBP is one of 28 National Estuary Programs (NEPs) across the country that receives EPA funding in order to work toward the restoration and protection of “estuaries of national significance”. MCBP works with stakeholders on the local, state, and federal level to protect the five main bays within the watershed; Assawoman, Isle of Wight, Sinepuxent, Newport, and Chincoteague, through restoration, environmental education, scientific monitoring, and targeted community outreach.

The Watershed

The Maryland Coastal Bays watershed is an impressive coastal resource. It supports abundant wildlife and a wealth of aquatic resources in a relaxing rural atmosphere unique to the mid-Atlantic region. The watershed includes more than 189,000 acres of land, 71,000 acres of water, 248 miles of shoreline, and nearly 35,000 acres of wetlands. Here, residents and tourists alike enjoy fishing, hunting, boating, sunbathing, and the natural serenity offered by the sea. As one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the state, the collective watershed of these bays encompasses approximately 175 square miles of Maryland’s coastal plain. It supports numerous rare and threatened plant and animal species, forests and wetlands vital to migratory songbirds and waterfowl, and numerous important commercial and recreational fin and shellfish species.

New Entries

MCBP will be bringing information to you once a month. Each addition will highlight an animal or plant you may see in Ocean City

or Assateague Island. Of course there is the possibility, you never see them if they are deep in the ocean or out only at night, but that is the kind of knowledge MCBP will let you know about.
