Recreational Boating Allowed in Ocean City

Watersports Companies Prepping

Recreational Boating Open in Ocean City

Cutlip Family, owners of Bayside Boat Rentals

(May 7, 2020) Several low-risk out door activities will now be allowed to resume today. An activity that has many thinking about fun in Ocean City this summer is boating! Recreational boating is now an accepted activity. Prior to today, recreational boating and fishing  were not allowed unless necessary to feed yourself and your family. Commercial Fishing was deemed essential work.

Our favorite watersport rental companies are gearing up for when they can welcome visitors back now that recreational boating will be open. See how their operations are prepping for when it is safe for your return.

Bayside Boat Rentals

Bayside Boats is prepping to offer the same great service you expect when renting jet skis, pontoon boats, or jet boats in Ocean City. Despite the late breaking news that recreational boating would be allowed this summer season, Jackie Cutlip of Bayside Boat Rentals, was happy to tell us they are about 75% ready at this point to be open. She did say that her calendar next week would be full with planting all the the tropical plants they ordered to brighten up their establishment, but she was delighted to help create that atmosphere for the clients. They have taken off the shrink wrap off their equipment, the bottom painting of the boats has been done, the pressure washing of the docks is currently underway. They are fully staffed and are hoping to open as soon as May 16th with limited services of pontoon boat rental only as they ease back into the season. We spoke with Jackie of Bayside Boats and asked what they are most looking forward to and she said, “We are looking forward to getting people come back to Bayside Boat Rentals. We can’t wait to let them hop on a pontoon, and not have that worry about everything else going on around them. We hope they can relax and enjoy the sunshine and have some stress free fun.”

Get Some Stress Free Fun NOW Bayside Boat Rentals

Bayside Boat Rentals started an Ocean City Dreaming giveaway as part of their prep for summer.
Giveaway details: Bayside Boat Rentals is giving away a free 2 hour pontoon boat rental to use when Ocean City opens back up, just for being their fan. For your chance to win, like the Bayside Boat Rentals Facebook page and you’re automatically qualified for our random drawing. If you are already a Bayside Boat Rentals fan, like our OceanCity.com facebook  page and our contests post for your chance to win! Winner will be randomly drawn and announced May 15th.

Odyssea Watersports

Odyssea is excited to see their customers, and is knocking out items on the “to do” list in anticipation. The list of items that need to be removed is a big part of the preparation for the summer season for Odyssea and Action Watersports. Plywood is being removed from the windows,  shrink wrap is being removed from the equipment, and seaweed is being removed from the beach. They are fixing fences and putting a fresh coat of paint on anything  that needs it. Their jet skis, pontoon boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards need to brought out or placed on the beach, and they are still hiring employees. Odyssea is shooting for a Memorial Day Weekend opening, but is hoping to be open a few days before. When we asked Justin Clemens of Odyssea what he and the Odyssea family are most looking forward to, this is what he told us, “We’re looking forward to seeing our employees and customers come back. With everyone being inside here for the past month or two, I think it will be extra special to get outside and enjoy watersports. Something that kinda frees everybody’s minds and you can just get on the water and have a good time and forget about what’s going on for a little bit.”

OCPD Mourns the Loss of Sgt. Charles “Chip” Green

OCPD Mourns the Loss of

Sgt. Charles “Chip” Green

Ocean City Police Chief Ross Buzzuro announces with a heavy heart and great sadness that Sgt. Charles “Chip” Green, passed away on May 6, 2020, at the age of 47.

Sgt. Green, of Salisbury, was originally from Hampstead, MD. He joined the Ocean City Police Department as a seasonal officer in 1994 and worked for four summers before being hired full time in 1998. He was promoted to the rank of Police Officer First Class in 2003. In 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. On January 1, 2020, he earned the rank of Sergeant.

During his 22-year career, he has primarily been assigned to the Patrol Division. He was currently the supervisor and assistant coordinator of the Mounted Unit. Sgt. Green and his horse Benson have been an icon on the Boardwalk for the past ten years. He was always going above and beyond for the unit and was constantly finding ways to make the horse and rider a better team. “His passion to the unit and dedication of being an instructor has expanded and evolved the unit to what it is today” commented Chief Buzzuro.

Recently, Sgt. Green and PFC J. Johnson competed in the Horses Healing Maryland Military (HHMM) Mounted Police Competition held at the Maryland State Fair Grounds in Timonium, MD. Sgt. Green was extremely proud of how well our horses and riders did; they brought back several ribbons. Sgt. Green was always eager to showcase the horses and riders at community events such as Winterfest of Lights, Special Olympics Torch Run, Polar Bear Plunge, Cones with Cops, and the Mounted Open House.

When Sgt. Green was not on patrol or tending to the horses, he was most likely traveling the world. He was always on an adventure where he could ski, scuba dive, or explore somewhere new.

His passing is a tremendous loss to the Ocean City Police Department family.

Chip, we will miss your stories, jokes and your laugh. We thank you for everything you have done for us, and our community. The number of lives you and Benson have impacted on the Boardwalk over the years is immeasurable and will not be forgotten.

Governor Hogan Announces Lifting of Some Restrictions

Governor Hogan Lifted Some Restrictions

Needs Marylanders to Take Personal Responsibility

In Governor Hogan’s press conference today, it  was announced that due to numbers either declining or plateauing within certain metrics; Maryland can relax some guidelines laid out from previous Declarations.  The Governor stressed that the numbers are not at the point to move to stage 1 of the Roadmap to Recovery, but if they continue we could move to stage 1 as early as next week. However a spike in number could change the plan to move to stage 1. He also cautioned that each person must take personal responsibility to maintain social distancing, avoid crowds of more than 10 people, and to wear face masks whenever possible.

Hogan invited Karen Salmon, Maryland’s State Superintendent of Schools to speak about the status of education in Maryland. Salmon announced that schools will stay closed for the rest of the academic year, but online school can and will continue. “After extensive discussions with the Maryland state Board of Education, the Maryland Health Department and additional health experts advising the governor, I am convinced this is the appropriate decision in order to continue to protect the health and safety of our students, educators, staff and all members of school communities throughout Maryland,” state schools Superintendent Karen Salmon said. She also said that opening schools would probably not be included in stage 1 of the Roadmap for Recovery. The Education Department will be releasing “Maryland Together: Recovery Plan for Education,” a comprehensive plan for long-term recovery.

Changes to current Declarations:

ELECTIVE SURGERIES: The Maryland Department of Health will issue guidelines, effective immediately, to allow for elective procedures at the discretion of local hospitals and health care providers. Dentists are included in elective procedures.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: Effective at 7 a.m. Thursday, the list of safe outdoor activities will be broadened to include: golf, tennis, boating, fishing, camping. Closed functions at state parks will be reopened, including all state beaches for walking and exercise, and playgrounds.

SCHOOLS: Maryland public schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic school year.

Additional Answers to May 9 Opening

May 9th Opening Inclusions and Exclusions

Beach, Boardwalk, and Inlet Parking are Open

Many outlets have been reporting on the early reversal of some of Ocean City’s restrictions, but questions about the new Declaration  have come up. Below we have the New Declaration from the Mayor’s office of Ocean City. It does state the new date for the beach, boardwalk, and inlet parking to open. The accompanying notification also says it does not supersede any Executive Orders from Governor Hogan. We asked for additional clarity to help understand the new guidelines.

We did reach out to the Town for further clarity to help everyone navigate through the new orders. The following items should be advised:

  • Ocean City is not giving permission to people to come to Ocean City. If non-residents are here, they may use the beach, boardwalk, and inlet parking lot when it is open.
  • Lodging is still for essential workers only. Current restrictions to lodging are to be lifted May 22.
  • The pet policy for Ocean City started May 1. This means no pets on the beach or boardwalk until October 1.
  • Anyone in a pay-to-park space throughout the town will need to pay for the time used. Kiosks were covered during the closure, but will now be ready for use on May 9. For more about parking in Ocean City click here.

Here is the notification sent out from the Town of Ocean City:

Mayor Opens Beach, Boardwalk & Inlet Parking Lot on May 9

Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan announced Monday that he intends to lift the Mayoral Declaration on May 9, allowing the opening of the beach, Boardwalk & Inlet Parking Lot. This is a way to give individuals more opportunities to get outside, exercise and enjoy fresh air, while still adhering to physical distancing guidelines and gathering limits. This does not supersede any Executive Order made by the Governor, including the closure of non-essential businesses. Maryland’s Stay-At-Home order remains in effect.

Good Morning Ocean City!

People repeatedly remark it is often early morning on the beach in Ocean City which is their favorite time of the day. A time when everything is new, and the day is full of potential. A time of peacefulness and contemplation. As the sun makes its first appearance, there is the possibility that anything can happen on this new day. Whether you are sitting on the balcony of your ocean front hotel or condo enjoying the peace and quiet before the kids wake up, or taking a solitary walk along the beach, coffee in hand, it is a wonder that never ceases to amaze.   Today more than ever,  we appreciate this feeling of optimism, so we have put together a collection of sunrise and early morning photos for you to enjoy, until it is safe for you to be here in person to fully appreciate the wonders of a sunrise over the ocean in Ocean City Md.

Trimper’s is Changing and We Have the Pics to Prove It!

We have been hearing a lot about changes going on at Trimper’s Rides, and OceanCity.com has the behind the scenes pictures to show you many of the changes happening at the historic amusement park. Antoinette Bruno, Trimper’s President, escorted us through the property and showed us the progress of the changes. Beyond the gates of Trimper’s Amusement park many changes have happened and more are still to come.

“You can see there is a lot of work needed, and we are excited to do it. We are excited to create a new welcoming place for our guests.” ~Antoinette Bruno, Trimper’s President

The game booths along the boardwalk are all rehabbed with brand new roll doors. The interior spaces have been redone as well.

Antoinette told us that the housing above the game booths are part of the renovations. Exterior rooms will be for families and the interior rooms will be student housing. Beautiful soothing beach themed colors have been chosen as part of the revitalization of the spaces.

All the housing is being repainted. Antoinette proudly told us, “We are going to have the best student housing in Ocean City!”

New flooring will be installed in some rooms while others will have the original hardwood floors sanded and refinished.

The Inlet Village is part of the Trimper’s property. Details like replacing and painting the wood flower boxes that edge the buildings is all part of the process to reinvigorate the the village.

Here you can see the entire length of the box has been replaced and getting ready for paint. A crew member said they were going to be painting the eaves above next.

Some of the items on the list happen every year. The repainting of the carousel by Miss Maria is one of them. Here Miss Maria is seen giving the pig a touch-up.  She told us that she has been tasked with painting the carousel for the past 40 years. Her love for this project is only exceeded by her talent.

Ocean City Trimpers Rides

Walking the grounds we found, employees of Trimpers all over were all doing their best to prepare for the new season.  We asked to take a picture of Glen, an employee that just celebrated 50 years of service with Trimpers. Congratulations Glen! What an accomplishment!

To help all our viewers prepare for the new season we snagged pics of iconic locations throughout the grounds. We added them to our Zoom backgrounds gallery. Click here to pick your favorite.

Please let us know what you are going to do first when you get to Trimper’s. Will you take a ride on the carousel? Brave the rollercoaster? Or is there another tradition for you at Trimper’s that is your favorite?

Then and Now, Recent Changes in Ocean City

The resort of Ocean City is, and always has been, ever evolving. Because of the limited amount of space on the island, older buildings are continually being pulled down to make way for new construction. Some visitors love the new hotels with modern facilities, others miss the older buildings which hold precious childhood memories. Whatever your thoughts, this trend is bound to continue, as Ocean City moves with the times, although organisations are around to ensure some precious historic buildings are preserved, restored and revitalized to create a sense of character and  charm in our town for locals and visitors alike.  Here are just a few examples of the recently changing environment in Ocean City Md.

Princess Royale Prepping for Guests

Princess Royale Oceanfront Resort

Making Changes Due to Covid-19

“The pandemic changed the world, and how we operate,” says Kyle Johnson, General Manager of the Princess Royale Oceanfront Resort.

Johnson spoke with us about the new procedures that the Princess Royale has put in place due to the covid-19 crisis. The resort took these steps out of concern for the safety of guests and associates. They looked at recommendations for best practices from industry groups and the guidelines laid out by state and national organizations to protect everyone. Staff will be wearing appropriate PPE(personal protective equipment)- masks & gloves. Staff will also have their temperatures checked before they go to work areas each day. Other operational changes to ensure health and safety for guests and staff  has been implementing staggering of shifts to make sure not too many people are together and  less than 10 people in a meeting.

Check-in and Check-out

Traditional check-in and check-out will go away. All process of check-in and out will be in advance or online.  No more pens for a signature or credit cards exchanged at the desk. Guests will be told when their room is ready by text and/or phone calls. Now guests can pull up to the front door and be met by attendants that have their key ready. The Princess still has card keys but is looking to replace this system until then the keys will be a one time use.

Housekeeping Throughout Resort

Johnson told us , “The Princes Royale already had a very good process for housekeeping team,” but cleaning protocols will Princess Royalechange. They will not just be cleaning but making sure sanitizing and disinfecting happen, with focus on high touch areas. Public  areas like elevators will now  be cleaned more often throughout the day and night. The resort removed things that cannot be cleaned or easily replaced from rooms  such as room directories. Directories will be going digital; information found in the directory will be on app or the website. Other items you won’t see at the resort anymore are house phones or door handles to the public restroom since they were high touch places. Room turnover will also include replacing everything in a room that can be replaced and all linens and pillows are bagged and machine washed right away.  Housekeeping’s daily room cleaning will only happen when the guest is not in the room. Guests can opt out of daily cleaning too if they would prefer. Electro static sprayers  were purchased. They cover surfaces better than conventional sprayers and will be used in rooms and throughout resort. ESS allow for less contact too as associates can spray an area and not need to wipe it down.

Food and BeveragePrincess Royale

Due to social distancing that will need to be maintained, food service will change. The kitchen will be open. The restaurant and bar will not be open.  The resort will offer a grocery delivery program. When you arrive in your room your refrigerator will be fully stocked if you request it. Room service will be offered. Outdoor dining will be offered when the weather is nice, and tables will be placed far enough apart to maintain social distancing. The atrium is being looked at as an option for dining since tables could be placed far enough apart.  We asked if the restaurant would be opened at a later date, but Johnson said not this year. “We don’t feel that would be the best experience for guests to need to sit every other booth. The atrium, outdoor dining, and our ballroom allow for the social distancing. That is a safer and more attractive environment. We want to create an escape for them as best we can.” The resort plans to partner with other local restaurants that could offer food delivery or dining services as another way to make the guest experience more enjoyable too.

Other Amenities Changes

The Spa will not be open right away and the Princess is waiting on timelines from the government about when it can open and services offered.

Children’s Activities will be offered. They  will be smaller groups of kids and done outside.

The resort currently is creating a small arcade room. They will be making sure the number of people inside the arcade is  limited.

Pools are currently closed. The Princess is waiting on guidance about this as well. They need to find out how many people will be allowed in a pool.

With new changes Johnson said, “We are excited to get people back to work and get our guests back into Ocean City in a safe and responsible way. We could still have a really good summer. We are optimistic and hopeful for a bright  future for us all.

About the Artist:

Jon Pheasant has a new album; Supersonic Combustion. He is also a part of the national touring tribute group The British Ocean City DreamingInvasion Experience. He is based out of Salisbury, MD, and tours up and down the East Coast with his solo project. He performs at all types of venues ranging from Small nightclubs to Sports and Tiki Bars to Nursing and Assisted Living Venues.

Jon has always had a fascination with music and learned to play guitar at an early age performing at youth events for churches. It wasn’t long after that, he discovered the Beatles and immediately fell in love with their music. By 2003 at the age 14, Jon began performing a Beatles Tribute as a street musician in Ocean City, Maryland and soon after that, he began performing at local restaurants, clubs, private events, and other venues around the Mid-Atlantic region.

He was instrumental in forming a Progressive Rock group; Proof of Love; which focused on original material. He then became instrumental in forming The British Invasion Experience, a way to pay tribute to the music that he grew up with and inspired him to pursue music as a career. Jon is also involved with his solo project where he performs originals and covers alike. Jon is heavily involved with not just the performing aspect, but also managing The British Invasion Experience and his Solo Project. Between The British Invasion Experience and his solo career, Jon currently tours all around the East Coast region and is looking to expand further with both projects.

The Community is Supporting Atlantic General Hospital Healthcare Workers

So many acts of kindness, we can’t list them all.supporting healthcare workers

We had heard and seen from one social media page to another news report to a Zoom conversation about the different contributions Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, MD was receiving . We reached out to AGH for a more comprehensive understanding and Ocean City community has come through again!

We spoke with Caroline Phillips, Development Officer at Atlantic General Hospital Foundation. Phillips told us, “The outpouring of donations has been amazing.”

Donations of all kinds have come in:

  • fudge
  • full meals
  • face shields
  • popcorn
  • taffy
  • coffee
  • t-shirts
  • pizza
  • socks
  • shoe covers
  • pretzels
  • hand sanitizer

  • the list goes on

To see more of what was donated or the businesses, people, and organizations that donated go to AGH Foundation Facebook page.

“The outpouring of donations has been amazing.”

The Art League of Ocean City has started a community wide art installation encouraging heart designs of all kinds. The heart art can then be sent to the AGH to be distributed to all the healthcare workers. The Art League is also encouraging the hearts to be displayed in windows to show you are supporting healthcare workers all over.
