Embers Evolution: Inside the Revolutionized Property

By Logan Dubel

All-you-can-eat buffets were among the businesses hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. When the Taustin Group shuttered the doors on the iconic Embers Buffet at the start of the pandemic, they never imagined that they would not see the local staple in action ever again. However, as maintaining Covid-19 safety protocols challenged the restaurant industry amidst the slow reopening process, the Taustin management team believed that the habits of diners were changing.

So, while the members of the Taustin team were quarantining, they searched for new options for the vital 24th Street property. Now, a new era will soon begin at the old Embers site, with construction in progress on a massive three-story building that will house countless new businesses, offering retail, food, and entertainment.

Jay’s Café and Trading Co.

Among the occupants are Jay’s Café and Trading Co. and The Other One Brewing Co. on the first floor, and a reincarnation of the Embers Restaurant on the third floor. The second floor will offer experience-based activities for families.

Management hopes that the new building provides something for everyone. “Throughout the pandemic, we explored what this property could offer the community for tourists and locals alike, said Kyler Taustin, Director of Marketing. “We searched for a property model that would excite our loyal patrons of the Taustin Group but also bring something different to the Town of Ocean City.”

The new site will maximize its outdoor space with a full-scale courtyard shared by all the businesses on the property.

Jay’s Café will serve as a convenient morning stop for many visitors, with delicious coffee and pastries, but will also have sandwiches perfect for taking to the beach.

Plus, as craft beer continues to make its mark on our coastal community, The Other One Brewing Company promises to offer an adventurous experience. The new site will have a rotating tap list as well as beer-inspired snacks and cocktails. Plus, unlike many other local breweries, staff will be able to brew throughout the day, with customers even having the chance to take a peek at the process.

Founder and Head Brewer Nathan Todd is no stranger to brewing on the shore. On the contrary, he spent the past decade working for Backshore Brewing on the Boardwalk, which closed at the end of last year. With countless experiences under his belt and a lifetime of passion for craft beer, he cannot wait to get to work.

For Todd, this is a dream decades in the making. “This space will allow visitors to see and experience every aspect of beer, from watching the brewing process to trying new drinks and enjoying times with friends while listening to good music. Over the past ten years, I have had the chance to talk with people all across the Boardwalk and love the chance to share my passion and education about beer with them,” he said. “This is something that I love and can’t wait to share with people. It is important to me that we don’t focus only on a flashy look, but an authentic experience that provides Ocean City with a place where beer is truly made unique to our town.”

The new Embers.

Above the brewery, the reincarnated Embers will have an entirely new open concept kitchen and a relaxing bayside ambiance, paying tribute to the rustic sheik lounge-style origins of the Embers on 9th Street in the 1970s. Most menu items will flow through massive brick ovens, with the new restaurant specializing in Neapolitan pizzas with seasonal flavors.

These changes are not the only thing happening lately on the 24th Street block. The Taustin Group has not skipped a beat during the pandemic, making major adjustments to BLU Crabhouse and Raw Bar.

With recent updates, the restaurant now maximizes its outdoor space. The beach bar remains open, but there are elevated outdoor spaces with picturesque views. Additionally, the team incorporated some of the old Embers building into BLU, allowing the restaurant to also take advantage of indoor components and continue serving diners year-round. BLU now holds many more events and tastings during the shoulder seasons.

Finally, Embers Island Miniature Golf on 23rd Street continues to welcome patrons, adding yet another excursion to the all-inclusive site.

The construction continues! Photo by The Embers Restaurant.

“Seeing the evolution of this property and watching the dreams of so many people all come together is very special,” Taustin reflected. “This is exactly what my family has hoped for this property to become for so long – for people to be able to come to one spot and get the full Ocean City experience.”

Jay’s Café and The Other One Brewing Company expect to begin welcoming customers by June, and the remainder of the building will open on a rolling basis. Stay tuned for additional updates.

*Editor’s Note: Many remaining buffet restaurants have reopened in Ocean City, ensuring the safety of all patrons through mitigation practices.*

Springfest Concert Refunds

Our long awaited unofficial start to the summer with Springfest was not what we had hoped for this past weekend. Although Thursday, and a good part of Friday, was dry, the weather did not cooperate for the rest of the weekend, and despite every effort, Saturday nights headline concert by Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas was canceled.  Although Ocean City officials held out hope the forecast would change, the coastal storm conditions at the Inlet worsened to a point where is became dangerous to continue.

Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas

“With standing water in the entertainment pavilion and increased wind gust projections, we simply cannot risk the safety of our concertgoers or staff,” said City Manager Terry McGean.  “This is not the Springfest we had hoped for, but our hardworking employees and vendors did the very best they could with challenging circumstances.”

Blood Bank of Delmarva Announces Blood Emergency

School spring breaks and holiday travel have caused a drop in blood donations over the last 6 weeks

Types O supply is at just a 1-to-2-day level

DELMARVA PENINSULA – Blood Bank of Delmarva announced a blood emergency today, as school spring breaks and holiday travel have caused an alarming drop in donations over the past month. The blood supply currently stands at a 2-to-3-day level, with type O negative and O positive at just a 0.5-day to 2-day level. This is well below the ideal, 7-day inventory.

Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors to receive life-saving blood donations, but the recent spring break and holiday travel has caused uncertainty.

In addition, according to the latest figures put out by America’s Blood Centers, only 3 percent of the U.S. population donates blood. Blood Bank of Delmarva is a member of ABC.

“This time of year can always be difficult for the blood supply,” said Patricia Killeen, Senior Executive Director at Blood Bank of Delmarva. “One blood donation has the ability to save up to three lives. We highly encourage all who are able to donate today to help Delaware and Eastern Shore residents who need it most.”

It only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.

To make an appointment, donors can call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8 or visit www.DelmarvaBlood.org.

Each year, the Blood Bank of Delmarva normally hosts over 600 blood drives. These blood drives would not be possible without the commitment of community organizations that volunteer to serve as sponsors or coordinators, which provides opportunities for blood donors to give blood and help patients in need. BBD is a New York Blood Center Enterprises affiliate and a member of AABB and ABC. Family Fun: Jolly Roger Gearing Up for 2022 Season

By Logan Dubel

From the sand and surf to coastal food and activities, Ocean City truly has it all. Although a typical trip consists of relaxation by the sea, sometimes a visit is not complete without a little action. For nearly six decades, Jolly Roger has provided families with endless excitement across its various attractions.

As the summer season draws closer, Jolly Roger is preparing for yet another year of action-packed family fun at Splash Mountain, Speedworld, Mini Golf, 30th Street, and the Pier.

Although there are shortages of most things these days, activities at Jolly Roger are certainly not one of them.

First started in 1964 by local entrepreneur Buddy Jenkins, the park initially opened as a putting course and driving range. Jenkins worked in collaboration with golf icon Arnold Palmer to open the amusement hub. However, Jolly Roger would quickly grow with the addition of more than 15 rides over the next few years. By 1970, Splash Mountain opened, and Speedworld followed soon after in 1976, and the expansion has never stopped. Jolly Roger consistently seeks ways to evolve as the demand from tourists only increases.

“We work to provide family-friendly fun throughout Ocean City in a nostalgic way,” said Dawn Dillon, Director of Sales and Marketing. “From smelling the cotton candy to riding the roller coasters, the activities we offer are timeless and span across generations. Coming out of the pandemic, we’re thrilled to bring back fun activities and see smiling faces once again.”

The excitement continues with rides along both of Jolly Roger’s iconic Giant Ferris Wheels, offering visitors an aerial view of the bustling resort town.

Looking for more excitement? Jolly Roger also offers a free circus and pirate theatre at 30th Street. Additionally, construction has kicked off on a brand-new family track at Speedworld, which will open sometime in the next year. Finally, are you searching for the largest water park in Maryland? Look no further than Splash Mountain.

Still, the park is far more than a business. It is a true titan of the community. Jolly Roger always gives back and engages in philanthropic efforts. In 2017, the staff launched Christmas in July, an annual effort in coordination with the Marine Corps Reserve, serving underprivileged children on the shore. The event acts as a local agent for the well-known Toys for Tots organization. Patrons donate unwrapped toys and receive a 20% discount on Jolly Roger passes in exchange. Plus, the park staff takes part in various local festivities and even won the Ocean City Christmas Parade. It’s not just a summer amusement park but rather a year-round community partner.

While many of the health concerns of the pandemic’s early stages have faded, one major problem still looms – finding enough staff to keep the amusement park open daily and providing top-notch service. The seasonal worker shortage is not a problem unique to Jolly Roger but continues to challenge the park team. Jolly Roger is hiring and currently accepting online applications.

“We are looking forward to a great summer. We have so many groups booking trips to return to Jolly Roger, which is very exciting. I’m also very excited to see our team return to work as well as our returning customers,” Dillon added. “Plus, we’re crossing our fingers that it is warm enough to open up Splash Mountain in time for Memorial Day weekend. Seeing the rides like the Carousel and the Zipper that have been here forever return and come alive is so thrilling.”

Jolly Roger looks forward to welcoming you back to Ocean City as the summer arrives in just a few weeks. Visit jollyrogerpark.com for more information.

The Rest of Springfest Cancelled Due to Weather

Springfest Event Closed Today, Concert w/Starship Still Planning to Play Unless Weather Worsens

Ocean City, Maryland – (May 7, 2022): Due to the current coastal storm and the absence of event vendors who left early, Springfest will not open today as expected. At this time, the concert is scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. as originally planned. This Week in Pictures – Springfest!

The weather is a hit or a miss for Springfest every year. Some years it feels like mid July, and we all end up a little sun burned for being unprepared. This year however, the weather  does not look like it is going to co operate all weekend. The first day of Springfest, Thursday, however, was dry, mild, and at one point a little glimpse of blue sky appeared. Here are some photos from Thursday at Springfest when everyone was able to sit out and enjoy the music, the food, and all the shopping. Here’s hoping the rest of the weekend affords us the same opportunity!

Springfest 2022 Coming to Ocean City This Weekend

Springfest in Ocean City

It’s finally getting warmer outside and the flowers are blooming, just in time for Ocean City’s signature springtime event. Springfest, set for May 5th through 8th, is the ultimate festival, with great food, live music, and artisan vendors. Since Springfest began three decades ago, much has changed in Ocean City, but this joyful family weekend has always been a constant source of Eastern Shore spirit. We checked in with the town’s special events team for a preview of this big festival weekend.

From the bright lights of Winterfest, to the spectacular planes of the Air Show, Ocean City is home to numerous exciting special events that attract thousands of people. This year’s long-awaited 31st annual Springfest at the Inlet Lot is expected to be bigger and better than ever before.

Springfest in Ocean City MDThe free four day family festival will include live music, countless artisan vendors, and delicious food. Music will run all day every day, with many local acts taking the stage. If the music just calls out your name and you want the beat to go on into the night, check out the ticketed headliner concerts on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Bands include Romeo Delight, the ultimate Van Halen experience, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, and finally, the iconic Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. Yes, Springfest is certainly part of what “built this city,” in the eyes of Special Events Director Frank Miller and Coordinator Brenda Moore.

Springfest Organizers & Beach Tennis

“Springfest is really designed to bring people into town and offer a family-friendly opportunity to not only experience the amenities the town offers 365 days a year, but give them a new opportunity with music and crafts,” said Miller. “That has been a very valuable asset to the town for the past 30 years, and now into our 31st year.”

While you have the whole weekend to enjoy Springfest, you won’t want to wait too long to make it down because the food supply might not last forever. Gourmet food tents will be opening, with crab cakes, cheesesteaks, and funnel cakes all available for sale.

Plus, Springfest has a new addition this year. As beach tennis continues to trend on the West Coast, Springfest is bringing the sport to the east, with several exhibition events, with the hopes of hosting a full-blown tournament later this year.

Parking for Springfest

Thinking about parking? Have no fear; free parking is available at the West Ocean City Park and Ride, and the Boardwalk trams, beach bus, and shuttles will be in operation.

After three decades, Springfest is a longtime local tradition the town and its visitors continue to take pride in – it’s the unofficial kickoff to the reason why our town exists – the long-awaited summer.

“That family-friendly component is vital to Ocean City and Springfest and Sunfest really carry that banner,” Miller added. “Springfest typically draws 100,000 people and Sunfest brings in 200,000 people, so in terms of the size of these events and the impact they have on our local businesses, that is huge. So, as long as we can, we are going to maintain Springfest.”

“It’s a shoot-off from our fall event, Sunfest, which is going to be 47 years old this year,” Moore explained. “We want to get people to come when they normally wouldn’t – before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. It’s really a kickoff for the summer season.”

The full live music and beach tennis exhibition schedules are available on the town’s website.

Springfest will run rain or shine May 5th through 8th, with hours of 10 to 8 Thursday through Saturday and 10 to 6 on Sunday. We hope to see you there as we kick off our busiest summer yet here in Ocean City.

The Taustin Group Announces Launch of Microbrewery, “The Other One”

The Taustin Group is thrilled to announce The Other One Brewing Co, a new collaboration with Nathan and Gina Todd. The microbrewery will be on the first floor of the new development on the 24th street bayside block, and Nathan Todd will serve as founder and head brewer. As the only brewery on the island, The Other One Brewing Co. will be a place for everyone. The microbrewery and tap room will have a laid-back, rustic vibe with 30 seats as well as outdoor seating in the courtyard shared with BLU Crabhouse and the all-new Jay’s Café & Trading Co. When asked about the name, Nathan Todd said, “When you go on vacation, you have a choice – stick with what you know or be adventurous. We believe in seeking out the ‘other one!’ Those hidden gems are where you find innovation, creativity, and a good time.”

With a regularly rotating tap list, The Other One will offer a wide variety of styles on its 8 taps as well as beer inspired cocktails and snacks. “The microbrewery will serve as an integral player in our vision to make 24th street a premier dining and entertainment destination for all times of day,” says Taustin Group CEO, Cole Taustin.

The building continues! Photo by The Embers Restaurant

In 2021, the Taustin family began construction on a three-story building that encompasses a newly renovated indoor space for BLU Crabhouse & Raw Bar as well as multiple areas for retail, food, and entertainment. The third floor is designed to be a new incarnation of the Embers Restaurant. The redevelopment on the block will have a rolling opening throughout the summer of 2022 with The Other One Brewing Co. opening in June pending all final state and federal approvals.

ABOUT NATHAN TODD

Nate Todd

Nathan Todd, founder and head brewer, moved to Ocean City, MD in 2005 after vacationing in OC while growing up. His passion for beer led him to learn all aspects of his favorite drink, from bartending at several local bars to home brewing. For the last 10 years, Nate managed and operated Backshore Brewing Co and served as their head brewer for their last 2 years.

Upon Backshore’s closing, Nate knew he wanted to be sure that locals and tourists alike still had a place to go to enjoy quality brews made on the island. “Uncle Nate” is proud to bring his passion for beer to 24th street as the creative visionary of The Other One Brewing Co. where he can put his ideas in motion and bring his passions to a broader audience.

Game On: Join In on the Fun at OC Paintball

By Logan Dubel

Listen up, families! When visiting Ocean City, everyone typically has one pure and simple goal – relaxation. However, sometimes the kids, and even adults, get tired of spending each day of their vacation soaking up the summer sun, and are looking for new excursions. Does this sound familiar? If so, there’s a unique activity that promises to occupy your day with adventurous competition and family fun.

OC Paintball, located in West Ocean City, combines everything families love about the outdoors with a sense of excitement. Purchased and retooled by new owners in 2016, OC Paintball aims to provide visitors with an excursion fit for all ages and foster an adventurous spirit, creating lasting memories.

OC Paintball Owners with Mascot Finn.

The business is truly a family affair in every way. Not only does OC Paintball welcome families daily each summer, but it is owned and operated by Colleen Sanford and her son-in-law, Jonathan Flatley. Sanford, a former sales executive in the capital region who now lives in Fenwick full time, and Flatley, a native of the shore, remain grateful for and committed to the local community. This family even includes their dog, Finn, who serves as the mascot for OC Paintball and even makes appearances in the town’s Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day parades!

“When we were searching for opportunities, we had the ideas of family and community in mind. We wanted to create a true family business but also something that could give back to the community,” said Colleen Sanford, an owner of OC Paintball. “Paintball brings a lot of unity, a team spirit, and a competitive nature that creates fun for everyone involved. This business brings me and my family closer to the people of Ocean City, Maryland, which is very important to us.”

In addition to offering recreational fun, the owners strongly believe in paintball’s ability to foster team building. Over the past few years, OC Paintball has welcomed countless groups including churches, little league teams, and even the local beach patrol and K-9 units. Plus, the facility hosts bachelor, bachelorette, and birthday parties.

The game’s rules are quick and easy. Staff assembles teams, and then they hit the course fighting to avoid a hit and face elimination. Numerous engaging courses are open at OC Paintball reflecting different themes. One landscape is a town featuring old buildings and even a bus, while “Boat Graveyard” includes boats and jet skis to play on. There is also a World War II course with an airplane and sandbags. Finally, they offer “Dark Forest,” perfect for the summer when people are looking for shade. Players seeking additional action can take part in higher-stakes variations of the game.

Individual and group rates are available online. Admission includes a paintball gun along with goggles and a chest protector.

“Paintball is enjoyable because you’re outside, and it also makes for great exercise,” Sanford added. “We often joke with parents when they come in with their kids that we can guarantee the children will fall asleep early that night because paintball is a ton of action and running.”

While there are indeed risks associated with recreational paintball, the staff works hard to ensure that all players remain safe. Referees are present for each game and keep a close eye on the participants, and the staff is extremely strict with regard to safety regulations. All visitors must sign a waiver before playing.

Additionally, players seeking an equally exciting and action-packed experience but with less speed and intensity can choose to join a low-impact paintball game. These paintballs come with half the impact and move significantly slower, easing fears and concerns.

Throughout the pandemic, the owners feel fortunate that their business continued to thrive due to its outdoor location. Pandemic or not, paintball always includes protective face masks as well as social distancing, so this activity was amongst the least affected by Covid-19.

“I try to connect with people as soon as they get to OC Paintball because even though everyone comes here to have a good time, I know some people might be nervous about paintball,” explained Jonathan Flatley. “I help to make people feel comfortable to make sure they can have a great time with their family and teammates. After the game, I enjoy talking with our visitors and being part of their fun, while also hearing about all the memories they will take home with them.”

Now, after six successful years, the owners remain proud to welcome patrons each year to the OC Paintball and Sports Center. While Sanford noted that she was initially apprehensive about her entire family calling the shore home year-round, she has come to love not only being part of the local business community but the slower pace of life.

“We look forward to continuing to grow in our business and helping groups that join us for games grow as well. We want to help them unify and fundraise for causes that matter to them,” Sanford added. “One of my favorite parts about our community at OC Paintball is the diversity of people we see with all the visitors. Seacrets is always a great bet.  The food is good and it has that beachy, island theme.  You can get tropical drinks, beer, or anything else you might want at one of their many bars.  The best part is the party atmosphere once you finish dinner.  You don’t have to go anywhere to enjoy this time with your friends, dancing, drinking, and reminiscing.

You can also enjoy fabulous craft spirits and take their distillery tour.  Their distillery is adjacent to the Seacrets nightclub and offers insider tours with all kinds of secrets thrown in.  You see more and learn more about the Prohibition era than you thought possible.

Mackys ocean city bar
Macky’s is an ocean city bar and restaurant on the bay

Macky’s is a great place for dinner by the bay, but it’s also a great place to party the night away during the summer.  You can dance, get a variety of drinks, sit by the bay and talk or do a combination of the options, adding others if you are creative.  Macky’s is at 56th Street so you can get there by the Ocean City bus which runs frequently up and down Coastal Highway. There are also Ubers and taxis.  Please don’t drink and drive.

Saturday is the Day for Play

Depending on how your night went, we have lots of recommendations for a day of sun and fun.  You can’t come to Ocean City without a trip out on the water.

Liquid Limo

We recommend Liquid Limo for the wilder ride. We think this is a great way to enjoy your day with your friends before your wedding.  You can bring your own food and beverages and enjoy as much or as little time as you like on the water.  Our writer helped set the stage with an article on the Liquid Limo here.

Sail Alyosha & OC Bay Hopper

These boats are options as well.  Charter the Alyosha for a few hours or the day.  Bring your food and drink and enjoy a trip into the ocean or in the bay behind Assateague.  Anchor and swim away the hours or sail.  Whatever your pleasure, owner Steve Butz or one of his captain’s will help you realize your dream day on the water.

Rent a Jet-Ski

Before you start drinking of course.  We love Odyssea Watersports where you can rent jet-skis, pontoon boats, kayaks and SEadoo Trixxes.  They also own Liquid Limo so one can can do it all!  This group will ensure that you have a wonderful time on the water with your groomsmen.

Golf

Bayside Golf is only minutes from Ocean City and has a wonderful view

Ocean City is home to many golf courses and golf is aways a good option for Saturday of your bachelor party weekend.  If you don’t want to tackle the regulation 18 hole courses or you haven’t saved enough time for a full round, try miniature golf.

Paintball

Gear up and head to West Ocean City to the OC Paintball course.  Run, dodge, and win – Best team heads back to the bar with bragging rights!

Charter a Fishing Boat

Kimberly Sue Valeri – First deep sea charter fishing trip. Had a blast and helped reel in these fish

Bringing home some fresh fish that you caught during an all-day or afternoon fishing adventure might just make up for your absence.  There are head-boats where you and your groomsmen can buy passage on a boat that is already going out or you can charter the whole boat for your friends and head out to the fishing grounds off-shore.  Fish for a few hours or all day, it’s relaxing on the water and you can enjoy some local craft beer that you bring in your own coolers.

It’s July 1st 2021, and visitors are out enjoying the Ocean City Boardwalk

There is so much to do on the Boardwalk at any time of day or night.  You can stop at one of the many bars or restaurants, you can each French fries at Thrasher’s, you can ride the rides at either Jolly Roger at the Pier or Trimper’s

What’s New in Ocean City for Summer 2022

Spring is here, and summer is just around the corner, and as with every year, when you arrive in Ocean City this year for your annual vacation, the old familiar Boardwalk and beach will be there, but there are going to be some changes. This happens every year, of course, but we thought this year we’d give you a heads up on what to look out for when you arrive.

What Goes Up Must Come Down

Phillips up town in North Ocean City has come down! The old Phillips Seafood House on 141st Street, which has been closed since 2018, was finally razed to the ground this year. Building has yet to start on its replacement, which will be a multi-story condo block with some retail on the first floor.

Phillips Downtown

Phillips Crab House downtown on 21st Street finally closed its doors at the end of last summer after nearly seven decades, millions of served customers, and thousands of employees. It’s the end of an era for many Ocean City visitors. However, it has recently been announced that the owners of Fast Eddies on 118th St have officially taken over operations at the Original Phillips Crab House Building on 21st St, intending to open it as Union Chesapeake Seafood House. They have said in a post “Union Chesapeake Seafood House will not veer far from Bryce and Shirley’s legendary concept. The upstairs will feature an All You Can Eat Seafood, Prime Rib & Blue Crab Buffet! The downstairs will be a full-service restaurant/crab house specializing in the finest Seafood that Maryland has to offer.”

From Phillips Beach Plaza to Margaritaville

Old Phillips Beach Plaza at 13th and 14th streets closed its doors at the end of last season and now looks set to become a Margaritaville hotel, if all the details can be worked out! The new hotel, conference and high end restaurant complex will be 13-stories high, with 265-rooms, a boutique retail space and lots of swimming pools!

Rising from The Embers

The Embers on 23rd street was Ocean City’s first All-You-Can-Eat Seafood & Prime Rib Buffet, but when the pandemic hit, the owners decided this was the perfect time to demolished the old building and transform it into a premier dining, retail, and entertainment destination. The new restaurant should be open this summer.

BJ’s on the Water and Quiet Storm on 75th Street have both been demolished and building has started on the new Atlantic Beach House restaurant due to open this season.

Pier 23

Mad Fish in West Ocean City, burnt down August 2019, but this year, Pier 23 will open in its place at the Ocean City Commercial Harbor. Pier 23 promises to offer a unique experience built out of renovated shipping containers,  with elevated street food, craft cocktails and entertainment. Schedule to open this Spring.

From Liquor Store to Dairy Queen

The old Beer, Liquor and Wine Store at the Gold Coast Mall is being pulled apart and put back together again as a Dairy Queen. The liquor store moved last summer just across the parking lot into the former Peebles store. The new Dairy Queen should be open this summer.

Go with the flow like the Jellyfish Festival

The Jellyfish Festival moves from Labor Day Weekend to the weekend of June 4-5. The all-local downtown event promises to excite visitors with live music, extreme sports, craft beer, and a festival shopping village. The festival takes place on the beach at the Caroline Street Stage and will host a craft beer festival on Saturday afternoon, with the music festival all weekend long. Tickets for both the craft beer festival and the music festival can be found here.

New Bar at the Inlet Village

The old Frog Bar, which stood for a long time at the southern tip of the Inlet Village, overlooking the bay towards Assateague Island, was demolished recently, and a new building has gone up in its place. The new Bandits Bar and Grill will now have ownership of the spectacular views towards Assateague. When open, this new building will accommodate a food court concept.

ABC Liquors to be 1,2,3 stories!

The Atlantic Beverage Center at Seacrets is expanding! The new three-story building on the east side of 49th Street should be ready this summer, and when completed, the existing one-story, island-themed liquor store will be demolished.

Work continues at ABC Liquors next to Seacrets

A New View for Pit N Pub

There’s a new rooftop view coming soon to 28th Street Pit n Pub. Work has been ongoing all winter, and we are all looking forward to our favorite BBQ restaurant with a view!

145th Street Lot

144th-145th Street block

The empty lot in front of St Andrew’s Catholic Church between 144th and 145th Street, and next to the North Ocean City bus terminal, is to acquire a new 59-unit, multi-family townhouse development to be know as Sanibel Seas. Building has just started.

From Clarion Fontainebleau to Ocean City Fontainebleau

It’s the beginning of a new era at one of Ocean City’s oldest and most-recognized hotels. Now called the Ocean City Fontainebleau Resort, the former Clarion announced its sale in February, marking a new dawn on 101st Street. Changes will get underway shortly, but for longtime patrons, management assures that they will still experience everything they have come to value about this great North Ocean City hotel.

Convention Center Improvements

The Ocean City Convention Center has recently gone through some changes, and is now home to a new 15,000-square-foot gallery overlooking the bay along with additional restrooms and meeting rooms, gorgeous views and a beautiful bayfront promenade.

The old Paul Revere Smorgasbord at the Plim Plaza Hotel has been closed the last couple seasons, but it is now being transformed into the new Cabanas Beach Bar and Grille, due to open this summer.

New Boardwalk – it’s different but it’s the same!

The major re-decking of our much loved Ocean City Boardwalk is has been underway all winter. This first phase is scheduled to be completed by mid-April, depending on weather and other factors, and the second phase is scheduled to take place next offseason.

Replacing the boards

So there you have it, a few of the new things happening in Ocean City since your last visit. When you return this summer, enjoy the old and the familiar, the businesses and buildings that have been there since you were a child, but remember, like the peninsula it’s built on, Ocean City is an ever changing town, people grow old, businesses change hands, buildings come down, then go back up as something different. But it’s all there for one reason, and one reason only, and that is for your enjoyment, so enjoy our wonderful town, and all that is offers, old and new!

Hop On Over and Join the Eastern Shore Easter Keg Hunt

0

By Logan Dubel

Are you ready for adventure on the shore? Although many people do not make their way down the ocean until the end of May, an exciting local event is hoping to attract visitors looking for Easter excitement with the backdrop of the shore’s magnificent scenery. The Eastern Shore Easter Keg Hunt, returning for its second year on April 9, promises to excite residents and tourists alike, with opportunities for adult fun, exploration of the shore, and a new way to celebrate the Easter season.

Designed as a 21 and up scavenger hunt, organizers hide decorated empty kegs across the local region, from Cambridge, Maryland to Laurel, Delaware, and back to Ocean City. Teams of four receive clues at the start of the contest and then find additional hints on their scavenger path. Each team that finds a keg and returns it will receive a prize sponsored by an Eastern Shore business. Prizes typically include gift cards, amusement park tickets, and gear from local bars and restaurants, including Ocean Downs Casino and Pit & Pub.

All registration for the event must be completed online prior to April 9. The registration fee of $125 includes four event t-shirts as well as four drink vouchers for use at the scavenger hunt after party, held at Hoppers Tap House in Salisbury. The after party will feature live music, food, and additional prizes.

Team check-in begins at Hoppers starting at 11:30 a.m., followed by a welcome ceremony at noon. Come decked out in costumes and all your Easter gear! Then, participants begin their trek along the shore to find a keg and return it for a prize. In the end, no team will leave empty handed. Teams use their own vehicles for the event and are encouraged to select a designated driver.

“Growing up across the bridge in Montgomery County, Maryland, I remember hearing all about a similar keg hunt in my area, but it was much less structured,” said Jamie Lowe, a founder of the event. “My sister would tell me stories about how she and her friends had an amazing time together in a keg hunt, and I wanted to recreate that excitement here.”

Following a successful inaugural contest last year with 100 participants, organizers at the event’s sponsor, Pineapple Man Productions, hope to welcome even more visitors to the hunt in 2022. For Lowe and his co-organizer, talented local artist Megan Burak, the hunt is not just about this singular event, but rather showcasing the excitement the shore offers even in the offseason.

“When I moved here a decade ago to attend Salisbury University, I discovered so many cool towns and places. I found that when people would visit me, they weren’t aware of all these great sights,” Lowe added. “I have a burning desire to grow the Eastern Shore and show people that this is not just a place to visit the beach. If we want people to come here, we need to find things for them to do outdoors, and this event is only the beginning of what Megan and I are planning to do. We want people to explore the shore and its endless possibilities.”
