MCBP will be hosting a volunteer training for seal stewards.

Seals Are Protected

Many do not know that seals are a protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Therefore,  it is illegal to touch, feed, or harass a seal. By keeping 50 yards away from a seal, you can best ensure that harassment or change in their behavior will not occur. If you encounter a seal that has hauled out, please contact Marine Animal Rescue Program at 410-576-3880 or 1-800-628-9944.

What is Hauling Out?

Seal haul out for many reasons, mating, giving birth, predator avoidance, thermal regulation, social activity, parasite reduction, and rest. A non-trained observer, may take in their cute faces and want a closer look, but seals in our area are often hauling due to rest or distress. Contact or run ins with humans and dogs on the beach put all at risk; as the seal is still a mammal that can have and pass viruses and diseases along to you or your pet. 

Seal Steward Responsibility

When a seal hauls and MARP response team deems it healthy, the stewards take two -hour shifts watching the seal and making sure beach goers keep a safe distance. They are also there to provide specific information on the seal they are watching.

Keeping Track

If you see a seal in the bay, call call 410-213-2297 ext. 106 and it will be registered to keep track of sightings. UNLESS it is in distress, then please call MARP number above.

Don’t Miss a Top 100 Event in Ocean City, MD

The Town of Ocean City will be a bit brighter beginning November 21, when the Winterfest of Lights radiates the town during its 27th year at Northside Park. Previously named a prestigious Top 100 Event by American Bus Association and voted “Maryland’s Finest Holiday Tradition” by Maryland Life Magazine, Winterfest of Lights is a winter paradise for the whole family to enjoy.

Winterfest Express

The highlight of the event is the Winterfest Express, which takes guests on a ride through a mile-long animated wonderland of dazzling lights and spectacular displays, including the Twelve Days of Christmas and additional fairytale favorites. Christmas carols float through the air and throughout the Winterfest Village, which is located inside a festive and heated pavilion.

Café and Shopping

After the trip on the Winterfest Express, visitors can celebrate the spirit of the season by sipping hot chocolate from The OC Recreation Boosters Café or browse the Yukon Cornelius Gift Shop for that special stocking stuffer or OC souvenir.

Santa & Mrs. Claus

Kids of all ages can also visit Santa with a holiday wish list and meet Mrs. Claus, who makes her second appearance at Winterfest. While. Santa is all about giving to others as a sign of appreciation, Mrs. Claus is here to spread her wisdom on staying healthy and lending a helping hand. This iconic couple will be on site to delight adults and kids alike through December 23.

Opening Ceremony 

The special opening ceremony, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, at Northside Park’s Winterfest Village at 127th Street and the bay, is free and open to the public. The ceremony features Ocean City Elementary School’s “OC Stars” performing holiday songs and dance. In addition, Mayor Rick Meehan will “flip the switch” to light the Christmas tree and officially open the Winterfest of Lights. Even Santa will make a surprise appearance for the opening ceremony, which will feature free rides on the Winterfest Express train for the remainder of the evening.

Winterfest of Lights is located at Northside Park, 125th Street & the Bay. Beginning November 21, the hours of operation will be Sunday-Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Winterfest tickets are available and can be purchased in advance at the Ocean City Community Center and the Convention Center. Admission is $5.00 for those 12 years & older and FREE for those 11 years and younger. Winterfest concludes on December 31, 2019.

With more than one million holiday lights sparkling throughout the town, Ocean City’s Winterfest of Lights will create a long lasting holiday memory for you and your family.

Hotels, Restaurants, & Home Owners Welcomed Cruisers

Ocean City roads and parking lots had all kinds of showroom ready coupes, sedans, and trucks. The boardwalk had three days of parades, and all over town there were great groups of people showing off their chrome.

The convention center and the inlet featured spectacular automobiles, but they were not the only place to see some motors!

Flooding Caused Street Closures in Ocean City Last night and Today

Streets Have Been Opened

Last night, tide waters reached so far inland that streets were closed off from Division St. to the Inlet Parking Lot. Since 1:15pm today, Philadelphia Avenue has been re-opened to the Inlet. However,  the Town of Ocean City just posted this notice: Ocean City will experience additional tidal flooding this evening and tomorrow during high tide cycles. Mild to Moderate flood levels are predicted, which will result in street closures and potential changes to the Beach-Bus transportation routes. If you live in Zone A, take the appropriate steps to prepare for various high-tide flooding throughout the weekend. To Know Your Zone, visit: https://bit.ly/2MKNgfh.

Historic House Tour: Benefits Local Graduates

9 Places To Stroll Through and Admire

Lovers of architecture and history are excited for the second Annual Historic House Tour. The tour will commence on October 12th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Hosted by the Ocean City Museum Society, attendants will spend the day discovering the history of their favorite beach town. Showcasing nine of Ocean City’s unique homes, cottages, and churches; participants will be invited into homes that sit directly on the bay.  A docent will be on site to share the history of each location. Whether you want to take a close look at the stained-glass windows that belong to one of the Town’s oldest churches, or you are interested in the traditions that took place in an Ocean City family home, the excursion will not disappoint.

Fundraiser For Stephen Decatur High School Graduate Scholarship

The Historic House Tour is a fundraiser that will help strengthen and grow the George and Suzanne Hurley Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is open to Stephen Decatur High School graduates who plan on furthering their education at Salisbury University, Wor-Wic Community College, or UMES. Annually, the Museum awards one student, who can effectively demonstrate through essay, the historical significance of a community member, landmark, or event.

Proceeds Go To Scholarship

“By taking part in the Historic House Tour you are strengthening the longevity of our scholarship while celebrating the history of Ocean City”, said curator Sandy Hurley. The tour will start at the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum where you will pick up your tour booklet which will include a tour map and information regarding each property.

Attn: Please Attend

This study will ultimately recommend a location for the next Bay Bridge.  Although the process is roughly at the halfway mark, the number of potential crossing has been whittled down from 16 to just three.  Most significantly, one of the remaining crossings would connect from South Anne Arundel to the Sherwood/Witman/McDaniel area and then over the Miles River to connect with Rte 50, north of Easton. 

Many Factors to Decide Location

Although the construction of a new bridge will depend on many other factors – most significantly, funding; this study will definitely result in a recommendation for where a new bridge should be constructed should that possibility become reality.  Tomorrow night’s Open House will be the first and possibly the only public meeting in Talbot County as part of the study and we encourage those who have not had an opportunity to comment on the proposals, to stop by, learn a little about the NEPA process, and to share your written comments in the “comment book.”

The Open House will be held at the Talbot Community Center, located off of Route 50, tomorrow evening – which is Thursday, October 3rd.  Doors open at 6 PM and the event is scheduled to conclude at 8 PM.  If you are unable to attend or are interested in more information, click https://www.baycrossingstudy.com/

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers help check-in racers in registration, assist within their exciting festival area which includes start and finish lines, and lend a hand out on the epic SPARTAN RACE course to help motivate and guide participants through the race and obstacles. Help make this race a great one for the Town and every Spartan who crosses that start line!

Volunteers receive awesome perks:

  • Free race entry  (which can be used in Hawaii or at a future US event)
  • Fundraising Opportunity for groups 5+

Have you been training to compete in the Spartan Race? Are your kids thrilled for s’mores at the Bonfire? What are you excited for? Where is it your group of friends wants to go? Is it the beach and boardwalk and the events are just a bonus? We have you covered!

An Ocean City Regular

Those in Ocean City and along the water throughout the Lower Shore will be familiar with the double-crested cormorant. It is a black diving water bird that eats about a pound of fish a day. It also eats crabs and other sea creatures, but its main diet is fish. The double crest is only visible when the bird is in its breeding plumage, so you may not see the two tufts of feathers on either side of the cormorant’s head while it swims in our waters.

How to tell a Cormorant

Many who watch the water see a silent black bird with a long neck pop up, look around curiously and then quickly disappear, again, without making a sound. If you look more closely, you will see an orange/yellow, featherless area extending from the hooked upper beak to the teal-colored eye and then extending around the lower beak and down the throat. If you are lucky enough to see the bird open its mouth, you will find a bright blue interior.

Specially Equipped

The cormorant’s eyes are designed to see well both above and below the water. The cormorant’s outer feathers are not waterproof. The birds will preen to spread oils to help them shed water, but there is an evolutionary advantage to having some feathers that absorb water: it makes the birds less buoyant so they can dive more easily. The downy interior feathers, closer to the body are waterproof and help keep the birds warm in cold water.

Cormorants & People Do IT: Sunbathing!

However, because the outer feathers absorb water, the cormorant must dry them. That is why you see the cormorants perched on pilings, docks, rocks and even along the shoreline with their backs to the sun and their wings outspread. While some may find this creepy, it’s no different to the way we dash out of a chilling Atlantic ocean to spread out on our beach towel or lounge chair and wait for the sun to dry us.

Some believe these birds eat too many fish and should be culled. Cormorants are protected by a migratory bird treaty, however, and so cannot be killed without a license. In Japan, these birds were used by locals to catch fish for them. A string was put around the bird’s throat so when she caught a fish, she couldn’t swallow it. When she surfaced, the owner would collect the fish and send the cormorant out for another.

Look for cormorants around the inlet where the fish are plentiful and you can sit in your car, drinking a cup of coffee, and watch them do what they do best: fish. Look for their colorful heads too. From a distance, they may seem to be a boring black bird, but up close, they are spectacular.

Rackliffe House, a 1740’s restoration, is presenting their first Colonial Fair to celebrate the early years of the building of Rackliffe House.
On Sunday, October 13, 2019, from 11 am to 4 pm, the Colonial Fair will feature vendors who will offer colonial-related items and crafts such as Homemade 
Apple Hand Pies, assorted pastries, artisan bread, local honey, fresh eggs, flowers, potpourri, oils & vinegar, fall veggies, soap, coffee and teas and more.
Demonstrations of colonial craftsmen will be showcased during the duration of the Fair.

The 4-H Club will demonstrate milking a “faux” cow.

Seasonal food items will be available as well as a traditional pig roast with colonial beverages of mead and pumpkin beer. Soft drinks and hamburgers will also be for sale.  
There will be free admission for Rackliffe House tours.
