Tips for Watching the Air Show Like a Local

Watch the Air Show Like a Local

Excitement is in the air, literally, in Ocean City this weekend.  Ocean City, Maryland is one of six stops on the touring air show circuit produced by Brian Lilly. This year, the Air Force elite Thunderbirds will headline the event.  Heading into its 14th year, the OC Air Show will include:

  • F-22 Raptor Demo Team
  • A-10 Thunderbolt II
  • SOCOM Para-Commandos
  • Geico Skytypers
  • Mike Wiscus with his bi-wing acrobatic plane
  • C-17 Globemaster III
  • L-39 Cold War Era Jet Demo
  • C-5M Super Galaxy
  • Air Force heritage Flight Team
  • UH-72A Lakota

If you have never visited Ocean City for the Air Show before, be prepared for crowds.  The streets are full and it’s hard to find parking.  Get where you want to be early and stay for the show – or a great day on the beach with some amazing aircraft overhead.

1. Watch the show on Friday if you want fewer crowds.

The biggest way to avoid the crowds, but still see all the shows is to come in on Thursday night and spend the day watching the show.  Friday actually has more flying.  The pilots are practicing so you will see more passes. It’s not as organized and you can’t listen to the commentary at the Flight Zone, but you see most of the planes and its pretty spectacular.

2. Watch the Ocean City Air Show on The Pier

This one might need some strategic planning and early wake-up calls, but the fishing pier provides a beautiful perspective of the Atlantic Ocean on a good day and a great view of the planes overhead. Imagine what it’ll be like with those planes screaming past you while you’re standing literally on top of the ocean! You might want to bring your own shade with this option though.

3. Watch from the beach

The Flight Line Club is a ticketed VIP area and gives you beach chairs in a private beach area.  There are tents for shade and to enjoy your food.  You will hear the professional narration and get lunch included in the price.  You only get one parking space, so plan to car pool!.  This VIP area is between 16t and 17th Streets.

If you don’t want to pay and you don’t care about the professional narration, you can look anything up online anyway, you can just enjoy Ocean City’s 10 miles of beach or 2.9 miles of the Boardwalk and still all the aerial activity.  There are bathrooms off the boardwalk and in the flight zone.  Otherwise, plan to stay close to your hotels or head to one of the restaurants with outdoor seating.

4. Watch from the only brewery on the Boardwalk

Backshore Brewing has a big outdoor eating area on the boardwalk at 10th Street.  Order a cold beer and look up as the teams fly by.  There is a limited menu at the brewery but the food is coming from Hammerheads.

5. Watch the Ocean City Air Show from the water

Not a fan of crowds and annoyed by parking logistics? Skip the land route and just go straight to the ocean. Instead of rubbing elbows with complete strangers, you can be a little choosier with your guests and maybe squeeze in a little fishing in between. Hopefully they won’t get scared by the Bombers! Bring a boat or take a trip to one of Ocean City’s several marinas to get a more secluded air show experience. Check out the regulations on where you can drop anchor before you set sail this weekend.  You could also schedule a trip with the OC Bay Hopper and see the planes from the bayside.

6. Private party in a condo

For a different angle and for a full weekend trip, consider getting the gang together and renting a room someplace. There’s dozens of hotels on the boards or facing the beach – all you really need in this case is good friends and balcony.

7. West Ocean City

Practice on Friday delivers a great show, but the schedule is more haphazard.  If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch the Thunderbirds on Friday during their practice flights.  You’ll see all the other performers too – Our favorite places are   the Shrimp Boat , the Harborside or the rooftop deck at Sunset Grille.  You can also go to Hoopers and have a local craft beer by Fin City, much of it  brewed on site.

8. The Drop Zone

My favorite place to be for OC Air Show weekend! On the beach around 16th Street and 17th Street, jump teams parachute in this area. You can purchase  passes which allow visitors to get a less crowded experience, professional narration and enhanced sound in this area. Also included are portable bathrooms and food vendors. But most importantly, you’re right in the center of the action. To buy tickets, visit the OC Air Show site here.

In Case You Missed It: Trimper’s Big Ferris Wheel Is Coming Down

Trimper’s will remove its Big Ferris Wheel starting on Monday, following a difficult situation resulting from a zoning violation. The attraction, which the park first unveiled for the season at the end of last week, sits ten feet into the public right-of-way on the Boardwalk. After a discussion with the Ocean City Mayor and Council Monday night, Trimper’s decided to remove the ride altogether.

Trimper’s Big Ferris Wheel

Along with Trimper’s, the town hoped to resolve the issue, but due to reconfiguration issues along with possible removal and reconstruction costs, the company elected to scrap the Big Wheel entirely.

The giant wheel sits ten feet into the public right-of-way on the Boardwalk.

The Mayor and Council explained that it was in a less than ideal situation and did not wish to halt Trimper’s plans. Despite their pro-business approach, town officials insisted that rules are rules, and unless the amusement company could find a solution, then the wheel had to go.

10 feet of Boardwalk coned off under the ride.

Speaking exclusively with OceanCity.com this week, Mayor Rick Meehan made clear that while he wants to support businesses, he cannot set a precedent that violates the resort’s zoning laws. “This is not a position that we want to be in. We certainly support Trimper’s Rides and the amusement park. Last year, when the wheel was in a different location, I even went down for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. We are all there to help them because it’s a great attraction to Ocean City,” Meehan explained. “However, the Ferris wheel was erected, and it was ten feet over their property line and lies over the Boardwalk. That’s the public right-of-way, and we just can’t allow that. If we allowed Trimper’s to do this, then everyone would do it…We hope Trimper’s still has a successful summer, but this needs to be addressed.”

Looking north up the Boardwalk

The location of the Big Wheel was contrary to an agreement from October when the town did not give permission for the attraction to extend out over the Boardwalk.

The wheel was quite popular in the downtown area and first came to Ocean City last year when fairs across the state faced cancellations. It was expected to remain at the Boardwalk for a 40-day tour this summer but will soon hit the road after just a few days of operation.

The dismantling process has started Friday June 11th

For those still wanting a ride on a Ferris wheel this summer in Ocean City, have no fear, there is still the famous wheel at Jolly Roger’s on the Pier.

Jolly Roger’s Giant Wheel at Jolly Roger at the Pier will be open all summer.

A Tradition of Surfing

The art of surfing has always been at the heart of Ocean City. Ask any local enthusiast and they’ll tell you that surfing is much more than a sport, but rather a way of life that embraces this thriving beach community. All year round, surfers of all kinds, young and old, enjoy the awesome waves and radical surf scene that Ocean City has to offer. To celebrate this tradition of surfing and its importance to the community, here are some surfing photographs from our very own Ocean City beaches that we love. You can submit pictures through our Facebook page to see them featured on our website or social media pages!

Wipeout!
Everybody starts somewhere

Profile: Susan Jones

By Logan Dubel

Susan Jones, one of the hardest working people in the Town of Ocean City, knows the local business community better than anyone. Working on a daily basis to advocate for hotels, motels, and restaurants, she has made sure that no one ever leaves our businesses behind.

About

Role: Executive Director, Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association (HMRA) (1995-Present)

Hometown: Bishopville, Maryland (Deep family roots in Worcester County)

First Job: Layton’s on 16th Street

Education: Towson University

“We Rally Around People”

Understanding the Value of Hard Work: In my family, we knew that during the summer, you were working in Ocean City. There was no laying on the beach and doing nothing! I worked at Layton’s for six summers.

Jones on the Role of the HMRA during Covid-19: We have 225 hotels, motels, and restaurants on our team. Our group was instrumental in making sure that people on the state level making decisions did not forget about Ocean City. When you’re a small town with only 7,000 residents, they sometimes think you don’t have much of an impact. However, collectively, we do and are the second-largest city in Maryland during the summer. It was quite busy in 2020, and we made it through.

Jones’ Mission: want to be somebody that unites people. Hospitality is an industry that I love. I started when I was 14 years old, and I want to keep going, talking, and moving people in a common direction. The business and hotel owners that I work with and serve do not have time for the day-to-day minutia. I execute while they run their businesses, and the fact that they put their trust in me is a great accomplishment for the association. This is my small business, and I always look out for theirs as well.

Hospitality: You can always be hospitable, and that’s all about how you make someone feel. I want to make people feel welcome – welcome to do business in our city, welcome to visit, and welcome to connect. It has always been about hospitality for me, and I don’t foresee ever doing anything else!

Susan Jones’ Ocean City Favorites

Favorite Restaurants: Macky’s Bayside Bar and Grill, Fishtales, Harborside, and The Hobbit

Must-Stop on the Boardwalk: Thrasher’s French Fries – never visited the Boardwalk without a stop! Other favorites include Fisher’s Popcorn and the Cork Bar

Favorite Activities: Kayaking and eating at restaurants accessible by boat

Rainy Day Activity: Watching Hallmark movies and visiting the Art League of Ocean City

Favorite Time of Year: September – Bikefest and major benefits for the HMRA

Vision

The future for tourism is bright because we have a new Business Development and Tourism Director, Tom Perlozzo, and he is our captain of the ship. We now have someone leading the way to find our best customers. We are also pushing sports tourism because we love the families that come here. We are all going to come together to always do what is best.

Profile: Glenn Irwin

By Logan Dubel

Glenn Irwin is the fearless leader of downtown Ocean City, with over two decades of experience working to revitalize and develop the area. Whether spearheading projects or working with officials at City Hall, Irwin is one of the most well-connected and busy people in the town.

Role: Executive Director, Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) (2000-Present)

Hometown(s): Long Island, New York, and later, South Florida

First Vacation to Ocean City:

First Job: Development Planner in South Florida

Education: Rowan University, Florida Atlantic University

“If you drive around downtown, you can see our OCDC fingerprints on every building.”

Why OCDC: Twenty years ago, so much scattered development was happening across the town, and city leaders wanted to create a nonprofit organization that would follow design guidelines. We had a path, and that is still the basis of many of our revitalization efforts. We needed to create an identity for downtown.

Irwin’s OCDC is also well-respected because of its “Façade Improvement Program,” which since 2002, has given 248 downtown buildings a facelift.

1411 Street St. Louis Avenue Before
1411 Street St. Louis Avenue After

OCDC Success: We realized early on that we needed success and started downtown upgrades. A strong track record was important, and our small projects were actually some of the most important. By increasing land values, we have really benefitted the town.

Public Art: The white marlin water feature as you come off the Route 50 bridge, our first public art project in 2002, has become a symbol of the town. When people think of Ocean City, they think of that statue. We have symbols at every entrance, and we think it is extremely important to have those. We have partnered with the Art League and Delmarva Power to paint utility boxes to brighten up Ocean City.

Ocean City All Year: The economy is no longer just a summer economy. We are almost a year-round economy and people enjoy coming here in the spring and fall. More and more hotels are coming in and are staying open for more months. It may be colder, but people love visiting the town in the offseason.

In the offseason, it is a small town. All of the sudden our population of 7,000 seems large because many of them go to Florida in the winter. When I moved here in June 2000, I initially thought it was interesting to work with all the businesses and property owners and have those individual interactions. That’s what it all comes down to and remains today. We now have special events like Sunset Park Party Nights and employee housing – we like to say we are Busy OCDC. We have a massive team with partners everywhere and are grateful for their support.

Living in Ocean City: When I first moved here, I was in Ocean Pines and would commute into town. Once you live on the island, you rarely leave, and even though I thought I would always travel to Salisbury or Berlin, I stay in town almost always. I should have initially moved into town 21 years ago! I love being able to ride my bike to work when it’s warm.

Glenn Irwin’s Ocean City Favorites

Favorite Restaurants: Seacrets, M.R. Ducks, and Buxy’s Salty Dog Saloon

Favorite Hotels: Park Place Hotel and the Cambria

Must-Stop on the Boardwalk: Kite Loft and Back Shore Brewing Company

Rainy Day Activity: Visit the Life-Saving Station, catch up on work, and go to a bar

Favorite Time of Year: September – the weather is great, and although Bikefest is noisy, it’s a great fundraiser and economic boost

Best View: Sunset Park – quiet area and very peaceful

Vision

Every year since I’ve been here has gotten more fun because there is always something new happening. I see that progression continuing, but as this growth happens, we need to address workforce housing. I see Ocean City continuing to move ahead with more fun each year.

Celebrating 40 years of Go-Kart fun!

Baja Amusements is celebrating 40 years of go-kart fun this year. It’s hard to believe this West Ocean City business has been around since 1981, and has grown to be 10 acres of family fun.

Baja started in 1981 down on Stinky Beach and moved to its current location in 1983.  It started out as a Dune Buggy track and grew from there. There used to be a drag strip where the mini golf course is, and a speed boat course where stock car track is now.  In 40 years they have  grown from a single Dune Buggy Track down on Stinky Beach to a 10 acre park with 8 go-karts tracks, mini golf, climbing walls, kiddie rides and and arcade.

Delegate Wayne Hartman and State Senator Mary Beth Carozza at Baja Amusements

Delegate Wayne Hartman and State Senator Mary Beth Carozza were at Baja last week to  offer their congratulations and help this family run business celebrate their achievement.

The 7 Best Water Tours in Ocean City

If you are looking for something to do when you visit Ocean City, Maryland, there are lots of options. Of course you have your annual musts like mini-golf, beach activities, shopping, amusement park visits, and strolling the boardwalk.  When you want something special, however, and can spend a few hours on an excursion, we always head for the water.  Here are our favorite options for the 2021 season.

Jet-ski Tour of the Bay with Odyssea Watersports

It’s a family affair at Odyssea Watersports and Ron Croaker is the patriarch.  You will see him out on the water, greeting customers, or moving boats.  Odyssea wins the Best of Ocean City award every year for Best jet-ski rental.  You can’t lose with this group, whatever package you choose.  They also have the Liquid Limo for group tours.

Ice Cream Cruise on the OC Bay Hopper

The OC Bay Hopper has a lot of tour options for Ocean City visitors and residents.  They capture several of our top recommendations.  The sixth place winner is their ice cream cruise.  They bring homemade (and award-winning) small batch ice cream from Baltimore in multiple flavors and offer it on the boat during an hour long cruise on the bay.  Perfect for kids,  families, and couples who want a quick break.  You’ll see the boat in the pictures from some of the other winning tours.

Groups on the Liquid Limo

If you want a party, this is a party boat!  Tour the bay with your friends and enjoy events like bachelorette and bachelor parties on the water.  Families can also rent the boat for an excursion.  Lots of fun if you love a party!

Shore Craft Beer Cruise on the OC Bay Hopper

Crooked Hammock Takes Over Shore Craft Beer Cruise on OC Bay Hopper
Crooked Hammock Takes Over Shore Craft Beer Cruise on OC Bay Hopper

A two hour cruise, a two hour cruise…  Join the OC Bay Hopper each Thursday night at 7 for a 2 hour cruise focused on local craft beer.  Many cruises will have a tap-takeover by a local craft brewery. The other cruises will have a Shore Craft Beer expert who can tell you about all the breweries here on the Shore and let you sample local beer from a variety of our breweries.  You get 2 beers included in the trip and if you want more, you can buy additional beers for only $5.  See the dolphins, the ponies on Assateague, and the local birds all while enjoying local craft beer.  There is a bathroom break in the middle!

Nature Tour with the Maryland Coastal Bays

The pony isn’t following the rule to stay away from people. Luckily, the people stayed on the boat and the photographer got a great zoom photo.

We recommend that you head back to the OC Bay Hopper for a guided tour behind Assateague and Ocean City with the Maryland Coastal Bays.  This non-profit has scientists and educators on staff who will teach you about the  flora and fauna of our region.  You will talk about the wildlife including the bay birds like the osprey and the herons.  You might even see oyster catchers or skimmers.  You will typically see dolphins and might even get a glimpse of the wild ponies on Assateague.  Learn some history of our area, see the wildlife, and learn a little more about this coastal environment from the experts. You will also seine with a net along the shore to see what fish are there.  This is a great hands-on learning experience for the whole family! Proceeds from this trip are shared with the Coastal Bay program.

Alyosha Cruise for Shore Craft Beer App Users

The Alyosha has traveled around the world, but it’ll be sailing Ocean City’s waters for now.

This trip is for people who love craft beer.  All you have to do is download the Shore Craft Beer App and book a trip.  Your beer is included and you’ll enjoy 2 hours on this sailboat that will stay in waters behind Assateague.  Dolphins, birds, wild ponies and craft beer with 12 of your best friends.  If they aren’t already your best friends, they will be by the end of this tour!

Sunset Cruise on the Angler

$5 sunset cruise with the purchase of dinner

I recommend that every person who visits Ocean City try this fabulous deal. Eat at the Angler’s restaurant facing the bay.  Enjoy the great food, and the goombay smashes at Happy Hour prices, then talk with your waitress to get tickets on that evening’s cruise.  You only pay $5 when you eat at the Angler and it’s about a 45 minute tour of the West Ocean City area and the inlet.  If it isn’t too windy, you will even go up the beach.  This is a deal you can’t beat and a tour you won’t want to miss.  That’s why we give it our #1 rating.

Safe on the Boards: June in Ocean City

As tourists make their way down to Ocean City this summer, safety is key for the family-friendly resort. Each year, the town hosts about eight million people and becomes the second-largest city in Maryland, second only to Baltimore. With a massive influx of people comes many challenges, though Ocean City is well-equipped and prepared to serve tourists in a destination that has been bustling each summer for more than a century.

While Ocean City is a family favorite destination across the East Coast, the unfortunate events of June 2020 that wreaked havoc on the town caused some to question their vacation plans. Last June featured a few isolated yet dangerous scenes on the Boardwalk, along with a significant rise in calls to report disorderly behavior. At the time, many Ocean City leaders remarked that they faced the perfect storm of problems all at once. From the initial reopening of businesses following the Covid-19 lockdown to Senior Week, unruly visitors rocked the town at one of the worst times.

Although the television cameras that arrived from across the region captured the undeniable problems the town faced, they did not stick around to cover the work and change that ensued. Local leaders including Mayor Rick Meehan and the Ocean City Council dedicated several meetings to addressing the Boardwalk incidents. Following a week of unruliness last year, Meehan told fellow officials, “We shouldn’t be giving lip service, people don’t want it. They want solutions.”

True to their word, the Town of Ocean City, in coordination with the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD), took a more active approach on the Boardwalk throughout the rest of the summer, and many of the problems receded. Still, June is an unpredictable time, with challenges that can arise in the blink of an eye.

This summer, families planning to arrive in June must know that they are safe and can let loose without any fears. After all, the start of the summer is one of the most exciting times to be in Ocean City.

The town has dedicated the past year to understanding what went wrong and has taken many steps to ensure that the events of 2020 do not repeat themselves. Jessica Waters, Communications and Marketing Director for Ocean City, recognizes the problems associated with the upcoming month.

“June does present us with some challenges. Not only does our population increase dramatically, but historically we see a much younger group of visitors in June, which is not the traditional family visitor we have through the remainder of the summer. You have to remember, Ocean City becomes the second-largest city in the State of Maryland, so during the summer, particularly in June, we experience a few isolated incidents,” Waters explained. “Fortunately, our police department will be highly visible on the Boardwalk and throughout the city, strictly enforcing all laws and ordinances.”

Visitors should notice an increase in police presence on the Boardwalk throughout the summer, as the OCPD has worked diligently to recruit and hire new officers throughout the offseason. A handful of new officers joined the force in December and will be an integral part of the response this summer. Officers from allied agencies such as the Worcester County Sherriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police will be on deck along with plainclothes officers. The town adds that it will reallocate police forces and modify patrol times to increase the presence of law enforcement.

Ashley Miller, Deputy Communications Manager for the Ocean City Police Department, emphasizes that the town is prepared. “Ocean City is an excellent destination for families, and it’s safe to visit Ocean City and the Boardwalk. During the summer, particularly in June, Ocean City has historically experienced a few isolated incidents with young adults on the Boardwalk and downtown area, typically between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.,” Miller said. “However, the town is very safe, and the Ocean City Police Department stays vigilant in protecting the community.”

If you are having second thoughts about a trip to Ocean City in June, this summer could actually be the safest and most secure year yet. With local leaders and law enforcement more prepared than ever to respond, families hoping to enjoy strolls down the Boardwalk can do so worry-free. Of course, the later hours of the night could be less desirable due to noise, but the area is surely a family-friendly environment from sunrise to sunset.

Outgoing high school seniors fresh off their graduation will hit the sand from June 5 through 12 but will wrap up their festivities prior to the Ocean City Air Show, which will run on June 19 and 20. The Air Show is the town’s largest event of the early summer and will undoubtedly attract thousands of families. Nonetheless, people will not want to pass up time at the beach next month.

“I may be biased, but Ocean City is a great place to travel all year long. June, specifically, brings warmer temperatures, the end of the school season, and the official start of summer – which are three reasons to visit,” added Jessica Waters. “Not only does Ocean City offer an array of summer camps in June for the kids in the family, but it also starts our summer event series, which are free. Finally, the icing on the cake is the air show, which is always a fun and patriotic event.”

Even though June may not be the quietest time at the beach, it certainly is a place for exciting adventures and memories, and more importantly, well-deserved rest and relaxation.

Senior Week jet ski rentals

Long ago, as senior week jet ski rentals began to rise, Ron Croker and other watersport rental professionals elected to establish safety standards for renting out jet skis. Although the skis didn’t have safety regulations at the time, Croker thought it was best to establish some as the industry grew that would separate those running safe, guest oriented business from those who aren’t. Within the last 10 years, they further codified the rules as part of their participation in “Play it Safe” an Ocean City program designed to offer seniors alternatives to just coming to the beach and being drunk all the time.
The program is extensive sponsoring events all throughout June, but what Croker is part of is as much the attitude that Play it Safe espouses. Take it seriously.

serious fun

Serious fun, serious consequences

You can have a lot of fun on a jetski, spending an hour or more out on the bay tooling around with little danger but also at high speeds. That’s the jet ski paradox, and at the heart of the program to promote the serious fun attitude.
“They’re a blast, they’re a lot of fun but they can hurt you if you don’t take it seriously,” Croker said.
Jet skis don’t have breaks. They weigh more than 1,000 pounds. They can turn on a time and reach mesmerizing speeds. But if you take a minute to learn how to uses them and remember that the only real danger is inattention there might not be a better way to spend an hour on the Assawoman Bay.
Croker said the biggest part of the effort to keep jet skis a serious fun business is some of the pre-work that they do.

Come prepared for senior week jet ski rentals

For underage students, there is a release form that the parents can fill out in advance that not only outlines the seriousness of renting the machine, but also helps parents and graduated both see the value in preparation. It is designed to put parents at ease and focus grads on their responsibilities as motor vehicle operators simultaneously.

One of the reasons a jet ski excursion makes a great graduation present is it gives parents one last opportunity to talk about the difference between having fun and putting one’s self in harms way during their week at the beach. The jet ski disclaimer also acts as a metaphor for the larger Ocean City experience. Feel free to go fast, but be conscious that you are in control. There are people around who will look after you, recognize that that is their job and they are good at it.

Professionals on duty

In the case of jet ski rentals, the person that is looking after the students is a guide. There is one guide assigned to every excursion, two if there are more than five people going out. They have whistles and training. They are in constant radio contact with the main base and, most important, they are focused exclusively at making sure everyone has as much fun as is possible without being careless.
Moreover, back at the shop there are people who are trained to prepare the grads for their day on the water. In addition to safety training, there is a written test on boating safety. It is a basic test, and isn’t difficult to pass, but it acts as a final reminder about serious fun. After dealing with teens for as long as they have, the staff at Odyssea Watersports have a realistic approach to safety. One lecture can bounce off, but constant, regular and long term reminders are the kind of thing that tends to stick.

Top 3 indoor pools

Everybody wants an indoor pool when they go on vacation.  Of course, Ocean City has the beach and the outdoor pools here are fabulous when the weather is warm and sunny, but for those cloudy or cool days when you still want to sit by a pool, these hotels have it all.  All three are oceanfront so you don’t have to skip the beach to enjoy one of the best indoor pools in Ocean City.  The Grand Hotel and the Clarion both have great outdoor pools too so if you want the sun when it’s shining, choose one of those hotels.

Thrill-seekers and chill-seekers welcome at Bayside Boat Rentals

For eighteen years, Bayside Boat Rentals has been a staple of Ocean City and a must-visit business for anyone who enjoys being in the water.

Walk into their island-esque shack on 53rd street, right in front of Macky’s Bayside Bar and Grill, and it won’t take long to realize that there’s truly something at Bayside Boats for everyone. For the more adventurous crowd, Bayside’s jet skis and jet boats are first-class. But for families and the laidback types who just want to take in the beautiful scenery of the bay, they have something for you, too.

“We have 14 pontoon boats, they’re all three years or newer so you can go fishing, crabbing, so you can bring a picnic, have lunch on the bay,” said Jackie Cutlip, who owns the business with her husband Chad. “We have brand new Kawasaki jet skis that we buy every summer so they’re always brand new, top-of-the-line. And then we have five-seater jet boats, they’re like little mini speed boats so whether you want to go slow or fast or just chill out and have a relaxing day, we definitely have what you’re looking for.”

On a Sunday in early July, customers rushed in and out of the store, ready to set sail on the sunny Fourth of July weekend. It was also Cutlip’s birthday. As she manned the counter inside store and took a breath after their morning rush, an employee brought her a bouquet of flowers–the environment that Bayside Boats fosters is friendly and very warm (and not just because it’s July), and as you’d expect, it’s a fun place to work. Cutlip donned beaded Mardi Gras necklaces and a fuzzy pom-pom ring, a birthday gift from her daughter.

“We have three little girls so it’s very family-oriented around here,” she said. “Our staff is amazing, a lot of them are on their third, fourth and fifth summers. Our customers have been coming back, some of them since our kids were little babies in the office, so we have a really good clientele.”

In their cozy air-conditioned store, life vests and t-shirts hang on the walls, as well as anchor print leggings, in all sizes, for sale. There’s a bulletin board pinned with safety guidelines, a flyer that suggests tipping your guide (“If you had a fun ride, please feel free to tip your guide! If you hear us ring the bell, that means your tip was swell!”) and a 2003 Beachcomber newspaper article about the time a tiny baby terrapin was rescued from their parking lot.

Inside Bayside Boats
Inside the morning rush of vacationers seeking adventure.

Having been in business for almost two decades, Cutlip says she owes the success of Bayside Boat Rentals to their employees and landlords.

“My husband started [the business] with his mom and brother one year prior to me, I came in on the next summer and we’ve just kept it and changed something up every summer,” she said. “Our landlords are actually Pam and Macky that own Macky’s and we owe a debt of gratitude to them. They’re great people and they’ve helped us a lot over the years.”

She’s also grateful for Bayside’s repeat customers, of which they’ve gained many over the years.

“We’re just trying to make it, little small business people, but we’re really proud of our employees and what they do here. We think we have a great staff and we appreciate the people that come in and give us their business and trust us.”

Over by the water, five-year Bayside Boats veteran and jet ski guide Brian Rafer sent a crew of ski renters out on the bay after talking to them about jet ski operation and safety.

“Come out, rent a jet ski for an hour, rent a pontoon for four, it’s a good old time,” Rafer said. “Just go out there on the water and have some fun.”

Most of the employees are obviously passionate for water sports, and they’re plenty friendly and helpful to visitors who arrive for a spontaneous boat ride. Still, Cutlip has just one piece of advice for potential customers.

“We recommend reservations. We get pretty busy here so it’s always best to reserve it in advance, and you can just do that over the phone with a credit card, it’s simple, just takes a few minutes,” she said. “We have free parking until six p.m. We have drinks, ice, bait. Anything that you need, we have it.”

Shrimply Irresistible: Inside the Shrimp Boat

Ocean City and its surrounding area is home to some of the top restaurant establishments in the country, especially when it comes to seafood. Maryland, known as the blue crab capital of the world and the birthplace of Old Bay Seasoning, crushes the competition. Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay leads the United States in blue crabs, responsible for 50% of the nationwide harvest. Residents undoubtedly take their seafood seriously, as the industry makes up a massive $600 million in the State’s economy each year. During your next trip to Ocean City, visit the place that offers delicious seafood galore in a fresh way – the Shrimp Boat.

History – It All Started on the Side of the Road

Founded in 1989 by “Captain” Joe Crocetti, the Shrimp Boat had quite an unconventional start. Initially, Joe would set up shop on the side of the highway and sell fresh shrimp right out of his truck. After a successful first year, Joe moved to Route 611 and upgraded from his pickup to a more aesthetically pleasing boat. Even if it was simply for effect, that boat changed the trajectory of the seafood industry in Ocean City. The Captain has famously said, “I’ve owned fifteen boats in my lifetime, and this is the only one that has ever made me money!”

For the following two decades, the Shrimp Boat remained solely a fresh market in West Ocean City, offering clams and crabs too. Joe captivated his customers with not just the savory taste of the food but with the stories behind how it arrived. In those times, the business only opened up a few days a week because Captain Joe spent most days riding up and down the mid-Atlantic coast to North Carolina to pick up shrimp and clams at the docks. Along his journeys, he met countless interesting people and had plenty of “fish stories” to tell once he returned.

The Shrimp Boat never actually cooked food for its customers until recently but always instructed people on exactly what to do. However, as demand and popularity continued to build, the team realized that it was time to start getting in the kitchen themselves. In 2009, the business opened a small kitchen aimed at serving customers who were on vacation and without a place to boil shrimp or steam crabs. That miniature kitchen did not last long and was replaced with a larger space the following year. The original transformed into a crab room, which remains in use today.

Restaurant & Evolution

By 2012, the Shrimp Boat expanded even further when management put a roof over the building and constructed a large restaurant armed with a liquor license. Outdoor seating, which later proved necessary during the pandemic, was also added.

Captain Joe remains active, but after the restaurant opened its doors, he sold the business to his nephew, another Joe. Now-owner Joe White began his career at the Shrimp Boat as a young kid back in 1993 and has witnessed every incarnation.

“The Shrimp Boat has attracted people for three decades now because people like to know where their food comes from. That is what makes this place unique,” White said. “When Captain Joe started, he never set out to start a seafood restaurant, he just wanted to listen to the customers’ desires and figure out how he could meet their needs.”

One image that White says will always stick with customers is the iconic “boat” itself. He remembers the original, which he “thought was the greatest thing since sliced bread.” Recently, Captain Joe revealed that when he started, he was without running water, showing how far the business has truly come. The old Shrimp Boat along the side of the road is now one of the most well-known seafood restaurants along the Eastern Shore.

Top of the Line Seafood

If anyone knows how to cook shrimp, it’s the team at the Shrimp Boat. Although it may sound simple, their rule of thumb when cooking shrimp is to leave the head on because it preserves the flavor. Boil the shrimp all at once, allow them to boil in water twice, and then the job is done. Along with this technique, the secret seasoning contains much less salt than others on the market.

Similar to the shrimp, crabs are cooked fresh to order and are not pre-steamed. The restaurant has an advanced crab room, equipped with a wall steamer capable of cooking up seven bushels at a time.

“We’ve taken the mentality of cooking to order with all of our seafood, whether it’s shrimp or crabs. We also make our own hush puppies to order and source our corn locally,” White explained. “It’s all part of the dining experience. We always try to have at least three craft beers on tap because we want to give people a sense of the local beer scene. We are passionate about promoting the local food scene all in one stop.”

Demo Kitchen & Quality Crab Cakes

Cooking shows are all over television, but now the restaurant is launching a series of videos showing customers how to cook their favorite meals from their own kitchens. On Facebook, White recently demonstrated the process of making crab cakes while telling fascinating stories with Captain Joe.

Joe White, the host of the videos, believes that the demo kitchen opens up new possibilities. “The demo kitchen will allow us to show our fresh seafood at the boat, but make it into alternatives they can do at home, even if we aren’t serving it in the restaurant,” White said. “We want to cater to folks who are either trying to eat healthier or maybe want to try a new way of cooking something.” Look out for new episodes weekly.

If you are looking for a savory crab cake in Ocean City, there are plenty of places to go, though few with the quality of the Shrimp Boat. The restaurant and market planned ahead of the pandemic and throughout this offseason to ensure that their supply of crab meat is stable and does not require any substitutes. “Crab cakes at some places use substituted materials right now, and that is not the quality folks have come to expect from us,” White added. “The price might be lower, but if you don’t feel like you are biting into a local crab, you probably aren’t.”

New Spice Shop

While the Shrimp Boat certainly will not reveal their secret seasoning, diners will now have the chance to make their food at home taste like the food they eat on vacation. A new office adjacent to the restaurant houses seasonings, which are perfect when purchasing fresh seafood. Many of the spices are available right inside the restaurant, but the office will remain open outside of regular hours. Favorites so far include garlic crab, black pepper crab, along with chicken and rib spices.

Impacts of the Pandemic

Courtesy of DelmarvaLife

As with all other industries, the seafood business felt the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Research from NOAA Fisheries shows that seafood sector revenue decreased by an average of 29% between January and July 2020.

Despite mass interruptions to the flow of the supply chain, the Shrimp Boat continued to push ahead and succeed. “Commercial fishermen everywhere lost their ties to restaurants and other businesses, but the fishermen working for us were not negatively impacted. The pandemic disrupted the scene because not all the sources that were available to restaurants before last year still exist,” said White. “Some found alternative jobs and were not able to wait around for restaurants to reopen. We made sure that the partnerships we developed in the last 32 years remain strong, but it is going to be a while before the industry stabilizes. We haven’t slowed down, but the industry has.”

One major change for the Shrimp Boat location was the addition of outdoor dining, an endeavor that included installing surround sound music, new landscaping, and sun shades. The new area proved to be highly successful, with people who said they would not feel comfortable eating outdoors at other restaurants telling staff that they felt safe at the Shrimp Boat. That is the highest compliment any restaurant could have received in such an uncertain year.
