A Glimpse into History: The Fate of the Original Nao Trinidad
The Nao Trinidad was the flagship of the Magellan-Elcano expedition, the first to circumnavigate the globe between 1519 and 1522. This monumental voyage opened new trade routes, connected continents and oceans, and introduced the world to diverse cultures in Brazil, Argentina, the Mariana Islands, the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, and Timor.
Setting sail from Seville, Spain, on August 10, 1519, the Nao Trinidad led a fleet of five ships across the Atlantic, along the South American coast, through the Strait of Magellan, and across the vast Pacific Ocean. However, after reaching the Moluccas (Spice Islands), the Trinidad’s fate took a tragic turn. A severe leak in its hull prevented it from returning to Spain with the sole surviving ship, the Victoria, which completed the circumnavigation months later.
In a desperate attempt to return eastward, the Trinidad faced relentless headwinds, currents, and a violent storm that nearly destroyed it. The crew suffered from cold, hunger, thirst, and scurvy. After six months of hardship, with only 17 survivors, the ship limped back to the Moluccas, where they were captured by the Portuguese. The battered Nao Trinidad was abandoned and met its demise in those waters.

Going on vacation doesn’t have to mean losing sight of your health and fitness goals, and if you’re willing to put in a little bit of time and energy, you can reap the benefits of a beachside workout.

Running on the boardwalk
The boardwalk is about three miles long, and early in the morning, it’s a jogger’s paradise. In the summer, arrive before 7 a.m. to beat the crowds, and, as a bonus, enjoy a picturesque sunrise over the beach as you run. Local runners say they enjoy using the boardwalk because all of the stimulation it provides distracts them from the task at hand – so basically, instead of thinking about how sweaty you are or how much distance you have left, you’re looking around at all the scenery, the colorful shops and the passersby.
Running on the beach
If you’re up for more of a challenge, try running in the sand: according to a Belgian study called “Mechanics and Energetics of Human Locomotion on Sand,” running in soft, dry sand requires 1.6 times more energy than running on a hard, flat surface. This is because of the mechanical work required to get through the sand and the tendons’ and muscles’ ineffectiveness in working through the sand’s unpredictable terrain.
You also can intensify your workout by going barefoot: you’re minimizing the impact on your knees and exercising your feet and ankles – your feet are forced to grip the sand, which activates all kinds of small muscles. Just remember to go early, before the sand gets too hot!
Plus, if you workout near the shoreline, you have the ocean’s instant heat relief. Win, win.
Biking the boards
Not up for a run? No worries. The before-7-a.m. rule (maybe 8) applies to this one, too, unless you don’t mind weaving in and out of boardwalkers, which can be especially difficult in a surrey. And if you’ve ever been to OC, you know what a surrey is: a four-wheel, 2-6 person bike that’s essential for a family workout. There’s a multitude of rental stores for regular bikes, scooters and surreys up and down the boardwalk (and even places to rent segways, though that won’t exactly get your blood pumping). Beach yoga
All you need is a mat, and maybe a flat place in the sand to lay down said mat. And a bottle of water. Please remember to bring water when you go out, because drinking saltwater is not recommended.
Do some research, because several yoga studios in the area offer guided yoga and meditation on the beach. But of course, if you’re already a pro, you can always guide yourself for free.
Other exercises
Feel free to use the beach to fit whatever workout needs you may have, whether that be beach volleyball or swimming against the tide (just kidding, that’s dangerous. Don’t do that). In case you’re an exercise novice, here are a few beach-friendly exercises to make routine or add into your daily run.
Burpees: Stand up straight, drop into a plank and do a push-up, then hop back onto your feet and jump high into the air. Sometimes referred to as a squat-thrust, this is an aerobic and strength-training exercise.
Plank drags: Assume the planking position and walk your hands forward 10 paces or so while your legs drag behind you. This will strengthen your core and build up all kinds of muscle.
Inchworm push-ups: This one is another great muscle-builder. Start standing, and place your hands on the floor (try to keep your legs straight, but it’s okay to bend your knees a little). Walk your hands outward until you’re in a plank, do a push-up, and now walk your feet to your hands.
Or, just run. Simple
Get creative. No matter what exercises you incorporate unto your workout routine, the sand’s resistance will automatically make it that much more intense.

Here is a brief history of Ocean City, Maryland which has a storied past.
Indigenous peoples to Thomas Fenwick to Isaac Coffin
An Englishman named Thomas Fenwick,the namesake of the Delaware resort that borders Ocean City to the north, once owned the land that our Ocean City of today rests upon. Thomas Fenwick obtained the lands from the Assateague and Nanticoke indigenous peoples who had roamed these beaches for thousands of years. Isaac Coffin opened the first inn to take in paying guests in 1859.
All who are involved in the city’s tourism today can look to Isaac Coffin as grandfather of the hospitality industry in Ocean City, Maryland. Visitors came from all over the eastern seaboard to enjoy the pristine beach, abundant fishing and to collect seashells in what, at the time, was an undeveloped strip of sand, not the Ocean City, Maryland that we know today with its high-rise condominiums, amusements, shops, restaurants and mini golf courses.
During this early period, the appeal of Ocean City as a resort was largely in its natural beauty, and many came just to watch the waves breaking on the shore, view the sunset over the bay or feel the winds of the sea rustling the dune grass. Isaac Coffin made the first beachfront inn available to visiting guests in 1869.
The Ladies Resort to the Ocean
Shortly after this, the town was surveyed and the decision was made to develop 250 beachfront lots. The corporation that was formed to develop the land sold 4000 shares of stock at $25 each. Ocean City at this time was known as the “ladies resort to the ocean”.
The Atlantic Hotel, for many years the northern-most attraction of Ocean City, was opened on Independence Day, 1875. This was also the year of the official founding of the resort as Ocean City. It offered 400 rooms, billiards, and entertainment for gentlemen and offered the natural beauty of the Atlantic Ocean in this small coastal town. A railroad from Berlin was developed in 1878 that allowed travelers to cross the Sinepuxent Bay directly to the resort and the town was incorporated in 1880.
Storm of 1933
Ocean City was slowly developing during the interim years as a true summer resort. In 1933 a major hurricane separated the resort from Assateague Island. The Army Engineer Corps that responded to the disaster had the foresight to see the merits of the stormed-carved inlet and reinforced it to make this new gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sinepuxent Bay permanent. The inlet has allowed easy access to the Atlantic for fishing, boating, and other water sports.
Bridges
In 1952 and 1964 respectively, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel were completed. This increased access to the resort from the south and west and the fame of Ocean City as the Mid- Atlantic’s premier resort grew. The importance of these two gateways to the shore cannot be underestimated as prior to their completion the only access to the peninsula was by skirting the bay and descending on the resort from the north.
High Rises
The Ocean City, Maryland tourism industry exploded in the 1970s with the high-rise condominium as the preferred form of architecture. This distinguishes Ocean City from the Delaware resorts to the north which primarily offered small cottages at the time and now single-family homes are commonplace.
Panoramic ocean views became a signature of Ocean City. In the 1980s and 1990s in lieu of scientific findings, the town began the first of a series of beach replenishment projects to combat a growing erosion problem. The Ocean City Air Show 2024 will not grace the skies of Ocean City in June this year. It has been moved to August 24-25 to accommodate the teams scheduled to fly. While this may cause disappointment in some, we are sure that the performance will be worth the wait!
Will Feature the Frecce Tricolori in Historic Performance
The Ocean City Air Show, scheduled for August 24-25, 2024, is set to captivate audiences with its exhilarating lineup of aerial displays. Among the highlights of this year’s event is the highly anticipated performance by the Italian Air Force’s renowned aerobatic team, the Frecce Tricolori.
Known as the “Tricolour Arrows” in English, the Frecce Tricolori are making a historic return to the United States after a hiatus of over 30 years. Great Views Without Tickets
For those seeking to enjoy the Ocean City Air Show without purchasing tickets, several free viewing options are available. The beach and boardwalk between 6th and 26th streets offer prime viewing areas, with the show’s center located between 13th and 17th streets. While these areas may be crowded, the open space allows for comfortable viewing. If you don’t care about the narration, the thrill of the planes flying right over your head a little farther up the beach as you lounge on the sand is hard to beat.

For a more relaxed experience, consider venturing further north or south along the beach, where crowds tend to thin out. Additionally, public spaces like the pier or the inlet parking lot can provide unique vantage points. West Ocean City has many spaces great for viewing the air show. The beaches along the bay facing Ocean City are great. Even Assateague provides great viewing locations. Bring a picnic and settle in for the thrills and excitement that only ace flyers and their planes can provide.

If you want to see some monster fish, take the family down to the docks and watch some enormous game fish being brought to shore. Rain or shine, considering the beauty and the abundance of things-to-do on this peninsula, you’ll find something that’s free and fun to occupy part of your family vacation.
A landmark on the Ocean City Boardwalk since its opening forty years ago, Harrison’s Harbor Watch and Rawbar continues to draw crowds with its timeless charm, fresh seafood, and unparalleled views of the inlet.
The Harrison Family
The Harrison family has been invested in the Berlin and Ocean City area for several generations. Starting in 1884, Berlin farmer Joseph George Harrison began growing peaches in the Berlin area. This business expanded and soon became the world’s largest grower of fruit trees and ornamental shrubbery in the 1920’s. As the peach business declined in the early 1960’s, brothers Hale and John Harrison entered the hospitality and restaurant business in Ocean City. Exactly 100 years after George Harrison’s entrepreneurial idea, Hale and John opened Harrison’s Harbor Watch Restaurant and Raw Bar in 1984. Although the family later expanded its hotel and restaurant base, Harrison’s Harbor Watch has continued to be the only free-standing restaurant in the family’s Ocean City portfolio.
Jeb Vetock, Food and Beverage Director of the Harrison Group Hotels and Restaurants, states, “Harrison’s Harbor Watch is celebrating its 40th anniversary this summer. From that first summer in 1984 the goal was always to treat each customer like they were a VIP. We have had the privilege of watching families come each season, getting to know them and watching their families grow.”
The Building and its Location
Harrison’s Harbor Watch is a very popular, 444 seat, two-story seafood restaurant with views of the Atlantic Ocean, Assateague Island, and the commercial fishing harbor.
The restaurant was opened in 1984 by brothers John and Hale Harrison of Harrison Group Hotels. The building itself is supported with large timber columns and beams and the large windows that give Harbor Watch guests one of the best views on the East Coast. The unobstructed view of the Assateague Island Maryland State Park as well as the national seashore provides diners with a one-of-a-kind experience. The wild horses of Assateague, dolphins swimming through the inlet, pelicans and hundreds of recreational and commercial boats passing by creates a feast for the eyes. In the evening the restaurant has large lights on the roof that illuminate the Ocean City inlet and jetty on the north end of Assateague. With the inlet lit up, small bait fish are attracted to the surface which in turn attract other larger fish and local fishermen of course. The Ocean City seagulls also get in on the action floating with the current through the illuminated waterway. Just when they get out of the cast of the rooftop lights, they will fly up from the water, go back to the other end to enjoy the light show and the benefits it brings once again.

Due to its size and breathtaking views, Harbor Watch is a popular place for large, medium and even small events. It’s ideal for wedding venues, receptions, banquets, and organizational meetings. The second floor has been the home to thousands of stunning sunset wedding receptions, banquets, and fund raisers for up to 275 people.
The Menu
Surf & Turf
The restaurant has a large menu that caters to both seafood lovers and land fare lovers alike. Locally sourced seafood such as day boat scallops, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi, and lobsters are purchased from the commercial fishing harbor throughout the year. Oysters and clams are sourced from local watermen and prominently featured in dishes at our award-winning raw bar including the famous made to order oyster stew. The raw bar offers guests a unique front row experience of watching oysters and clams shucked in front of their seats, and shrimp, clams and crab legs simmering in the pots right at the bar.
Some famous dishes that have stood the test of time include baked clams casino, Ludwig’s mussels, Mr. Harrison’s rockfish blackened In Cajun seasoning and topped with crab imperial, homemade soups, a variety of seafood pastas and combination platters. The number one seller however is always the famous crab cake that never has any filler, breadcrumbs or crackers to hold it together. Simply crab meat and seasoning broiled to a golden brown.
An early saying at the restaurant was, “Seafood so fresh, it will make you blush.”
Charbroiled steaks are prominently featured and hand cut daily. Only the finest Black Angus beef is sourced for its state program which features a variety of standalone steaks and surf and turf combinations.
Unlimited Sides
Since the restaurant opened in 1984, one of the most unique menu offerings is the unlimited side dishes that are offered with each meal. Customers can enjoy as many helpings of the side dishes including our famous red potatoes, wild rice, vegetable of the day, crisp fries, summertime coleslaw, and Eastern Shore cucumber salad.
They also offer gluten free selections and several children’s choices, too.
Raw Bar & Appetizers
Of special note is the raw bar and meal starters that complement the entrée selections. Just imagine; bacon wrapped scallops, baked oysters Rockefeller, steamed clams, crab dip, and so much more, make Harbor Watch’s raw bar line-up unparalleled in area restaurants. Harrison’s Harbor Watch was recently awarded as the best Raw Bar category in the 2024 “Best Of Ocean City” contest by OceanCity.com! Its signature starter is its famous Oyster Stew. This Oyster Stew is made to order at the raw bar. For many, Harbor Watch’s Oyster Stew is the best they have ever tasted.
Matching its great raw bar are the homemade soups; these include Maryland crab, cream of crab soup and lobster bisque.
Lots of Beverage Options
Harbor Watch provides an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages such as soda, ice tea, and fresh coffee. And these come with free refills! Juices, mineral and bottle water area available, too.
An assortment of beers, on draft and bottles, craft and national names are available. A good selection of cocktails, frozen drinks and wines are provided.
The Service
Harbor Watch prides itself on its excellent service to its customers. Many of its customers are intergenerational parents and their kids who have returned to dine at this same restaurant for many, many years. In fact, a number of the restaurant staff have continued to serve at this popular eatery. Several employees have worked at this restaurant for ten, fifteen, and twenty years or more! It is not uncommon to find some of the employees working as teachers during the school year and then working at the restaurant with their summers off. It is this consistency of its customer and employee base that has continued the success of this long-standing eatery and bar.
Jeb Vetock started working at Harrison’s Harbor Watch in 1997. He started as a busboy during his summer breaks from college and continued to work and learn the other services at the restaurant from serving tables to working the famous raw bar. He eventually worked his way up to his current position as Food and Beverage Director. He said he met his wife while working here in 1989 and she continues to work at the raw bar today!
According to Vetock, “None of this happens without the amazing teams that come together each season to welcome our guests. Each year the core team welcomes around 100 new faces and is tasked with getting each team member of the speed on the operation, standards, and the Harrison Group approach to hospitality.”
The Atmosphere
As one enters into Harbor Watch, take in the nostalgic look and environment showcased in the full restaurant and bar area. The seafood and nautical works are located on almost all the walls and often hanging from the ceiling. Even the bar area contains old photos encased in the wood work. Preserving this seafaring tradition of old Ocean City is a major part of the story being told and experienced through a visit to Harbor Watch. It has been this traditional feel that has remained in this restaurant since its beginnings.

Besides the food and beverage, the highlight for many is looking out the expansive windows to view the Ocean City area and northern section of Assateague Island. Common to see are passing boats, fishing boats along the jetty, and plenty of birds. With luck, some may spot a passing dolphin entering the inlet or even a pony on Assateague Island from their dinner chair.

Importance to Ocean City and the Boardwalk

Harbor Watch is more than just good food and drink. It’s experiencing the maritime history of Ocean City and the surrounding area. It’s exactly this feel and taste that Hale and John Harrison envisioned for their restaurant and bar customers and which continues forty years later.
We have large beach crowds from Memorial Day to Labor Day in Ocean City. To keep everyone safe, surfing is only permitted in designated areas during the beach patrol’s operating hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Seven days a week there are two rotating surf beaches in Ocean City. And, on weekdays, there is also a third surfing beach set up in the inlet area. No activity other than surfing is allowed in the surf beach area.
The two rotating surf beaches move two blocks south each day. Some beach visitors are bothered or upset when they come out to the beach and realize that the surfing beach is on “their” beach for the day. However, we try to explain that when you do the math it really isn’t that bad. Based on the current rotation, a specific street block would not have the surfing beach on the same date for over 20 years. So if your family stays on 94th Street the second week in July every year, and the surfing beach were to be on 94th street this year during that week, it would not happen again for the next 20 years. So giving up your beach to the surfers once every 20 years isn’t so bad.
The third surfing beach operates Monday through Friday and is always in the same location starting at the south rock jetty at the end of Ocean City and extending 200 yards north. This area was picked because it is usually not crowded on weekdays and often has surfable waves. Furthermore, it is not safe to swim close an obstruction such as the rock jetty.
On certain days when inclement weather affects Ocean City, the Beach Patrol Captain may allow surfing. This decision is made daily with the input of supervisors on the beach. If there are low numbers of people on the beach, and the weather is poor and not predicted to improve, the surfing ordinance may be suspended for a period of time, which locally is knownas “modified.” There are also other factors taken into consideration when making this decision. On days of inclement weather, you can ask any SRT on the beach if the surfing ordinance has been suspended, or call beach patrol headquarters at 410-289-7556. But the absolute best method to stay informed is to subscribe to “SURFING NOTIFICATIONS” on the Beach patrols website www.ococean.com/ocbp.
Local surf shops will also know when the surfing ordinance has been modified. Even during these conditions swimmers always have the right of way and surfers must be at least 50 yards away from any swimmers and wear a leash at all times (Ocean City ordinance). Even during the suspension of the ordinance, we will maintain the surfing beaches that were scheduled for that day so that the surfing community will still have an exclusive area to surf.
Look for the surf beach markings
Surf beach areas are marked by smaller yellow stands on the particular block designated for that day, one at the north end of the block and the other at the south end. You can identify a surf beach by the large “SURF BEACH” marker flags, the yellow surf beach stands, and the “Surf Beach Facilitators” outfitted in yellow and green uniforms. Members of the beach patrol called surf beach facilitators (SBFs) are assigned to work at the surfing beaches.
The SBF makes sure the operation of the surf beach runs smoothly. They make sure surfers stay within the designated area, while also educating the public and making sure they do not swim in the surf area. The SBF begins their workday at 9:30 a.m., a half-hour earlier than the rest of the patrol. During that time they are talking to beach patrons who are not planning to surf, making sure they understand the surfing beach operation. Although our “Surf Beach Facilitators” are not lifeguards they have much of the same training as a “Surf Rescue Technician” and are prepared to respond to any medical emergency and enforce the laws and ordinances of the Town of Ocean City as well as maintain order on the surfing beaches. As the surfing beaches rotate south through Ocean City the regular guard towers are not displaced so in addition to the Surf Beach Facilitators watching over the activities on that beach the SRT who is usually responsible for the area is still on watch.
The basic concept behind the surf beach is safety. Keeping surfers separate from swimmers and waders is a proactive way to keep everyone safe and happy with the way they choose to enjoy the ocean. Captain’s Note:
Occasionally during each summer, special event permits will be issued by the Mayor and City Council to hold a surfing event at a section of beach other than the rotating surfing area. These events are usually surfing contests and are attended by hundreds of spectators and competitors and are enjoyable to watch. During these events swimming and wading is prohibited for your safety and the beach patrol will be on the beach making sure the event goes smoothly. Although this may cause you to walk half a block to enter the water, remember that surfing is important to the whole beach experience and although it may tie up a few blocks, swimmers still have over 150 blocks to enjoy.
