Beat the Heat: 5 Cool Ways to Chill in Ocean City, MD

Summer is heating up all over the mid-Atlantic and the best way to Beat the Heat is to drive on down to the Ocean, Hon.  The water is 70º right now, which acts like a natural air conditioner when you are sitting on the beach.  When the wind blows off the ocean, it can get down right chilly.  When the rest of the East Coast is experiencing 90º+ daytime highs, Ocean City is frequently in the low to mid 80s.

So don’t let soaring temperatures dampen your fun! Here are the top 5 ways to cool down and make the most of your time in OCMD:

Dive into Water Adventures

You won’t be the only creature to let the Atlantic Ocean keep you cool.

Ocean City is a water lover’s paradise and nothing keeps you cool like the Atlantic Ocean.

Blow bubbles on the beach or take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic.

Kathie Baldwin – It doesn’t cost a lot to have fun with my grandkids! Bubbles on the beach make for some of the best memories (and photos). Before we finished playing, we had a bunch of people join in the fun! This is one of my favorites. The sky was cooperating!

Rent a pontoon boat and enjoy swimming, picnicking on sandbars, or just cruising around the bay.

Grab your friends and rent a pontoon boat from Bayside Boat rentals to enjoy a day on the cool Atlantic waters of the bay.

Seek Indoor Escapes

When the sun’s rays are at their peak, duck into one of Ocean City’s many indoor attractions.

The Carousel Resort’s ice skating rink provides a unique way to cool down.

A great movie in a theater that not only is air-conditioned, but offers the usual movie fare AND adult beverages!

Head over to Flagship Cinemas in West Ocean City to cool off.

A night out at Flagship Cinema
A night out – or a matinee at Flagship Cinema will keep you cool – and well hydrated with their food and beverage options.

The Art League has classes and exhibits that will entertain – and keep you cool!

Located in North Ocean City, the Art League is a great place to explore.  They have lots of art for sale as well as a rotating exhibit each month.  Art classes for kids and adults are also available.

Treat Yourself to Frozen Delights

Parking for FREE in Ocean city Md

We know everything costs money when you come to Ocean City, well, except for the beach which, unlike other beach resorts in nearby states, is FREE for everyone. So we thought this guide to free parking might help stretch that budget just a little bit more. After all, we are sure you’d rather spend money on ice cream than parking!

If you’re here for the day, and just want to park your car and forget about it, try the West Ocean City Park and Ride facility. It’s FREE parking and there’s loads of it, and there’s a shuttle to and from the South Division Street Transit Center that’s also FREE*. Or you can take a walk over the Rt 50 Draw Bridge and enjoy the view while clocking up some steps. West Ocean City Park & Ride is seasonal, beginning in May and running intermittently into October. *On special events such as Springfest, Bikefest, OC Air Show, July 4th Weekend, Oceans Calling, Country Calling and Sunfest, there’s a $4 charge for the shuttle.

Park and Ride bus

There is free parking downtown if you have time to look for it, get there early enough, and don’t mind walking a little. Bayside parking north of 4th Street along St Louis Ave is usually free, just be careful crossing the roads. There are some streets with restrictions, so please read the signs in case there’s a reason nobody is parked there. It’s an easy walk to the Boardwalk from there for most people.

Bayside parking downtown

On the Oceanside, you can park for FREE on Baltimore Avenue from around 11th street north, and on the side streets leading running East/West from around 9th street north. Again, make sure you read the signs just to make sure you’re in the free spot.

Parking on Baltimore Avenue is usually free from 11th Street north

The parking lot at the Convention Center is FREE on a daily basis, but overnight parking is not allowed.

Take the bus! Leave the car at your hotel or condo and just jump on a bus. It’s almost liberating not to be tied down to cars, parking, time limits etc. The bus may not be free, but at $4 Ride-All-Day, it gets you from South Division Street Transit Center, to the North End Transit Center, and everywhere in between, all day long. That’s not a bad deal! Download the TransLoc Rider App for iPhone or Android, or click here for the mobile web map and track your bus in real time. Exact cash fare required. For senior citizens age 65 and over and disabled persons, it’s $2.00 Ride-All-Day. Children 42 inches in height and under, are free.

For general parking questions, please call (410) 524-0391.

E-Bikes On The Boardwalk- What You Need to Know

Last year the mayors council had announced a new law in effect for the boardwalk. The law states that Class I e-bikes will be allowed on the boardwalk, while Class II and Class III e-bikes are not permitted. Class I e-bikes can reach up to 20 mph but only with the assistance of the rider as they pedal. Class II e-bikes can reach the same speed as Class I unassisted by the rider. Class III e-bikes can reach up to 28 mph.

The pedestrian and bike committee have been working hard to maintain the safety of everyone on the boardwalk to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. As of right now there is no town code to have e-bike rentals on the boardwalk, however a meeting will be held this week to discuss future options.

To see if your e-bike qualifies to be on the boardwalk, please visit here.
