Tide Room, A New Upscale Restaurant and Bar to open September 1st at Ashore Resort & Beach Club

The stunning beachfront restaurant is now open for advance reservations for indoor and outdoor dining

OCEAN CITY, MD- August 22, 2023 – Ashore Resort and Beach Club is delighted to announce the highly anticipated opening of Tide Room, a new coastal-inspired restaurant poised to elevate Ocean City’s culinary landscape. The restaurant will open on Friday, September 1st just in time for Labor Day, with live music and other exciting programming kicking off the holiday weekend. Nestled within the new Ashore Resort and Beach Club, Tide Room is the region’s only exclusive beachfront restaurant, featuring oceanfront views, as well as indoor and outdoor dining on the restaurant’s terrace. The 5,800 square-foot restaurant features a 35-seat cocktail bar serving inventive cocktails alongside an extensive wine list. Tide Room brings a new level of dining and nightlife to Ocean City, offering both locals and visitors an inspired dining experience, helmed by award-winning Executive Chef Ronald Marvel Jr.

In anticipation of the restaurant’s grand opening, Ashore General Manager Kane Kennedy said, “The vision was to create a new level of luxury beachfront dining not yet seen in Ocean City. With unobstructed views of the beach and the ocean, Tide Room provides an all-day dining and nightlife experience unlike any other in the area. The setting is unmatched.”

Situated on the terrace level of the hotel, Tide Room is the centerpiece of the resort. Offering a cool ambiance, unparalleled views, a chef-driven menu, and live entertainment, Tide Room is open for breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch, dinner, and cocktails. The dining room features beautiful banquettes with unobstructed water views, as well as outdoor terrace seating that directly looks onto the beach and ocean.

Executive Chef Ronald Marvel Jr. brings years of culinary expertise to his new position at Tide Room. With an impressive background as former Banquet Chef at Congress Hall in Cape May, NJ, and Sous Chef at Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michael, MD, Chef Marvel creatively infuses Tide Room’s menu with an elaborate tapestry of rich coastal flavors.

Ashore’s stunning oceanfront location is reflected within each flavorful dish at Tide Room, with a menu focusing on sustainable seafood and classic Maryland flavors. Staples include halibut, blackened rockfish, an organic half chicken, and New York Strip, with starters including mussels, grilled shrimp, and blackened tuna. A Glory Bay king salmon is served alongside basmati rice, black beans and roasted corn and served with a chimichurri sauce, while classic flavors of Maryland are brought to life in vegetable crab soup, a rich medley of seafood linguine, and classic lump Maryland crab cakes. Salads and savory sides round out the menu.

On the weekends, Tide Room offers Ocean City’s most elevated brunch experience. The menu features items like a house-made Monkey Bread with poached rum raisins and a sweet glaze; Crab Cake Benedict made with Maryland Crab Cakes, poached eggs, sautéed spinach, and cheese sauce over freshly made biscuits; and a Chesapeake Mary- Tide Room’s take on a classic Bloody Mary made with a house-made mix and garnished with a bacon wrapped shrimp.

Tide Room’s beverage program features a robust array of cocktails made with fresh ingredients.  Tropical-inspired classics include Ocean City’s best Mai Tai, a Mezcal Paloma, while also focusing on original curations such as the “Punch Line”- made with Tequila Ocho Blanco, Campari, Watermelon, and Yuzu, and “Just South of Manhattan” – made with Basil Hayden Bourbon, Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth, Amontillado Sherry, and Black Walnut. An expansive wine list includes labels from around the world, and over 32 varieties of rosé, sparkling wine, and curated selects of white and red wines by Restaurant General Manager Gabriel Berecz. A selection of craft and rotating local beers are also available on tap. Tide Room will host live music Thursday through Saturday nights beginning at 8pm, and a music calendar with confirmed artists is available online here.

Designer Kraig Kalashian, Principial of the award-winning hospitality & design studio KKAD, took cues for the restaurant’s design from the simplistic beauty of the natural world, blended with the calming tones of the sand and the sea. Oceanfront floor-to-ceiling windows are fully adjustable, allowing for all-season open dining and a refreshing sea breeze throughout the space. Tide Room’s beachfront location is incorporated into the design palette, pulling through rich earth tones and reflective surfaces to create a serene yet striking atmosphere.  Multiple sections for seating through the bar, lounge, and main dining area offer comfortable places for large and small groups.

Tide Room comes as part of the continued unveilings of Ashore Resort & Beach Club- a joint venture between an affiliate of Certares Real Estate Management LLC and affiliates of Monomoy Property Ventures LLC (MPV) and Highlands Investments LLC. Ashore Resort & Beach Club opened earlier this year, debuting 250 fully renovated guest rooms and suites. Splendid Earth Farms: Jeanne Vander Clute

Splendid Earth Farm is a small-scale operation that is located right off Main Street in Berlin, Maryland. It only occupies about a quarter of an acre in Jeanne Vander Clute’s backyard, as well as a half an acre down the road. Though modest in size, this farm is built on a strong foundation of sustainability and eco-centric tactics. Jeanne started her backyard farm from the ground up- literally.

Soil is composed of microorganisms, which are especially abundant in the area surrounding plant roots. Microorganisms are what make soil “living”. They can provide nitrogen, suppress disease, remove harmful toxins, and provide many other benefits for plant growth.  Jeanne began the transformation of her farm by using entirely no-till methods to convert the grass into raised beds. Completely turning the soil (e.g. tilling) disrupts the crucial soil ecology. She explained, “I used a broadfork to get the beds ready, and to aerate the soil.” To a farming novice, the broadfork device may be unfamiliar, however, it is vital in small-scale farming. “The principal [of the broadfork] is to not disturb the microorganisms in the soil too much, but to aerate it enough to let the vegetable roots get down there.” The broadfork is a powerful tool that efficiently loosens soil without flipping it upside down, which is vital in maintaining soil health and structure.

After bed preparation comes planting. Initially, Jeanne decided what to grow on her farm based on what she wanted to eat herself. “I really just tried a wide variety because I wanted to see the first year what I liked growing, so I did a mix of stuff that are longer season, like onions, and then some things that are much shorter, like arugula and lettuce because they come into maturity a lot quicker. Now, I love planting heirlooms and really any unique plants that do well in our climate.”

“Crop planning is so hard… you’re turning beds over, you’re harvesting, and then you are going to plant again. Timing and planning are essential so you have enough plants to fill your garden beds.” A crop plan is considered by some to be the most important decision-making tool available to farmers. It is a farmer’s guide to ensure everything stays on track. Developing an effective crop plan involves making decisions to fit your specific needs. Crop planning helps farmers avoid planting the wrong varieties in the wrong area and helps average a higher yield. When thinking of her own crop plan, Jeanne considers some advice she once received, “Someone once said to me, ‘If you plant something everyday, you’ll have something to harvest everyday.” This idea of the higher frequency with which you plant, the more yield you will have may seem simple enough. However, the time and effort required of this sentiment must be considered.

Being a successful farmer requires sheer time and dedication, no matter the size. In season, Jeanne works on her farm seven days a week, including running a CSA (community supported agriculture) vegetable pick up, and selling at the Berlin Farmer’s Market. She makes this commitment because she cares about her community. “I started out because I wanted to provide healthy food for the community, and it seemed like one of the most fulfilling things I could do with my life. I love to cook and eat and be outside.”

The biggest thing Jeanne can ask from the community is that they support local farmers. “You can choose to buy from a large-scale grocery store, or you can choose to buy from someone who cares about the food they are growing and cares about their community. Support all local farmers, especially ones who care about the environment and the health of the food you are eating.” “I want to continue educating myself, because I see education as part of my role as a farmer. I like to tell people about what I am doing so they know where their food comes from and what they are feeding to their kids is healthy. I like providing food for people, but I get even more excited when people want to grow their own food in their own backyard. I know not everybody has the time or space to grow, but I genuinely think it is the most important thing you can do for yourself and the environment.”

Splendid Earth Farm products can be found in the summer at the Berlin Farmers Market (May – September) on Sundays from 9:00am to 1:00pm, and Jeanne also offers a yearly CSA opportunity. If you have any questions for Jeanne, feel free to contact her via Instagram at @splendidearthfarm or email at splendidearthacres@gmail.com.

Crawl Street Tavern- Where Everyone Feels Like a Local

0

As you drive to the corner of Baltimore Avenue and Wicomico Street, you’ll come across an ocean blue building accompanied by an ocean blue sign reading “Crawl Street Tavern.” Adorned with beachy palm trees on either side of the door, the tavern seems small on the outside, but the inside is something you don’t want to miss!

crawl street tavern
Where everyone feels like a local.

From 2020 Until Now

Trimper Family California Hamburger
After some research, Wendy found out some amazing family connection to the building.

Wendy and Tony Dibuo took over Crawl Street Tavern in 2020 then officially bought the restaurant in 2022. The owners of The Cork Bar had seen the property day in and day out. Wendy, a 6th generation of the Trimper family, had a special feeling about the place. When the bar first went up for sale, Wendy did some research and ironically she learned that at one point the place used to be owned by her great-great-great-grandparents, Daniel and Margaret Trimper! Even more research revealed that her grandmother, Matilda, was even born there! It seemed too good to be true with a full circle moment for Wendy and her family history.

Research revealed Wendy and Billy’s grandfather with his partner opened up the bar in 1964. Later it was owned and operated by Wendy & Billy and their parents, Martha and Gordon Wilkins. It is now owned and operated by Martha & Gordon Wilkins’ children Wendy Di Buo and Billy Wilkins.

Being new owners, Tony let Wendy take the reins on the decorating and picking paint colors. She wanted a “feels like home, want everyone to feel like a local, leave happy place.” And that’s exactly what was designed. The small restaurant can hold up to 207 people with 14 tables, bar seating, and other seating in various places including near the pool tables and stage near the back of the bar. While Wendy and Tony take care of the business part, son Thomas works as the bar manager.

A Real Covid Comeback

crawl street tavern
Bar and table seating is available at CST!

As mentioned earlier, Wendy and Tony bought the bar in 2020. Opening on St.Patty’s day weekend, the couple knew exactly what was needed for a successful opening. And that it was! The place was packed with everyone sporting their Irish green and emerald beads, while drinking their green beer. Crawl Street Tavern was thriving- for six days anyway. And then the government announced that everything was closing including restaurants and bars- which included Crawl Street Tavern. “I can’t say it wasn’t scary. Everyone was struggling at that time, especially with us opening up a brand new place. However outdoor seating that was allowed weeks later really helped to boost and save our business.” Between The Cork Bar, The Bearded Clam, and Crawl Street Tavern, tables were set up for patrons to dine while masked. And that’s not all! They came for the music, too!

Music on Her Mind

Years before Wendy was in the restaurant business, she was also an avid musician/singer. She knew the importance of music to a community. During Covid, Wendy still booked performers to sing and entertain but during times when people were dining. The 6-9pm crowds came and masked up while listening to good music once again. Everyone came to hang out, listen to music, eat, and were gone by the mandated 10pm.

Breakfast First

crawl street tavern
Egg and meat platters hit the spot with a hot cup of coffee before the beach.

crawl street tavern

As one of the only places downtown to serve breakfast, Crawl Street Tavern offers several options that are under $10! With a goal to have affordable pricing for customers, the Dibuo’s goal is for patrons to be able to eat here several times a week without breaking the bank. Some popular plates include eggs and meat platters, creamed chipped beef (which looks delicious), and pancake platters that are only $6.99. Breakfast hours begin at 8am and end at 1pm. If you’d like a mimosa or a bloody mary to start your day, the full bar opens at 9am.

Lunch and Dinner Begin at 11am

Cooked just the way you like them wings!

Loaded tot drizzled with cheese, bacon. and topped with sour cream.

The team at Crawl Street Tavern really pride themselves on their food. The crab cakes are top notch, steamed shrimp are cooked to perfection, and the wings- crisp and tasty. If you’re in the mood for a thick juicy burger, you must try their signature charbroiled burgers.

Fan Favorites

crawl street tavern
A broiled crab cake goes perfectly with a cold beer.

Crawl Street Tavern has an extensive menu with many favorites that people return for. One of their fan favorites is their crab dip that comes in a bread bowl! Now that sounds divine. Other mentionable favorites are the Build Your Own Nachos and Tots. And we can not forget to mention their Maryland Flat Bread which is topped with crab, shrimp, smeared with an Eastern Shore Old Bay base.

E-A-G-L-E-S

Fly Eagles, Fly! Wendy and husband, Tony, are avid Philadelphia sports fans. They will be promoting themselves as a Philadelphia Sports Bar airing all Philly Basketball, Baseball, and of course Football! Crawl street tavern will be offering the NFL Sunday Ticket every Thursday evening and all day on Sunday. Along with showing the games, they will also be offering drink and food specials during the games. If you’re not a Philly fan, don’t worry! You can still come and watch other games (like the Ravens).

What To Look Forward to Here

As summer begins to wind down for other restaurants, things are just picking up here. During the evenings during Ocean’s Calling, Crawl Street Tavern will be one of the only places that patrons can go to after concert hours. Tickets will be available for Stephen Kellogg, who will be kicking off the Ocean’s Calling Festival at Crawl Street Tavern on September 28th. Doors will open at 7:30, tickets are only $25, and they are expected to sell out and fast. The other evenings of the festival, the tavern will host local and regional bands, which drawn enormous crowds on a regular basis. Other performers include Harbor Boys and DJ Magellan during Ocean’s Calling.

Other notable events include comedy nights as well. The next comedy night will be August 27th. And we can’t forget to mention Bike Week music events that will be coming as well. See links for more details.

Ocean City’s Hot Air Balloon Festival Not Cancelled- But Relocated

2

Ocean City’s Hot Air Balloon Festival, which was scheduled to take place August 25-27, has not been cancelled. But it has been relocated.

The event will now take place back to its roots at Triple Creek Winery in Cordova, Maryland. “The event has been held here for the last 7 years,” states owner Alex Spies. “We tried to help accommodate all of the balloons that had already made plans to come to the eastern shore already.” It also gave companies a chance to still come and show off their incredible hot air balloons. Balloons will be traveling from all over the country including New York, Ohio, Florida, and North Carolina just to name a few. Cordova is located in Easton, Maryland, about an hour and a half away from Ocean City, MD.

Traffic and safety concerns brought up by the Maryland State Police and county officials were one of the many reasons that the county has decided to relocate the much-anticipated event. In addition to the traffic, Worcester County wanted a year to plan the extravagant event, which was going to be held in fields and area behind the Ocean City Outlets.

Spies tells us that there will be a refund policy posted soon for those who bought tickets specifically for the Ocean City area. However if patrons bought tickets and would still like to attend the event in Cordova, their Ocean City tickets will of course be honored.

The new/ previous event location, Triple Creek Winery, began as a vineyard 30 years ago. It was only 10 years ago that the winery was added. If you’re planning to attend check out their Chesapeake Reserve a delightful red blend and their popular chardonnays and pinot grigios.

Moving the location back to where it began made sense to some.  It gave Ocean City the time that it needed to properly prepare and plan for an event of this magnitude.  For others, it will be something else to anticipate for the 2024 summer season. Meetings will be held on Tuesday August 15, 2023 to discuss the plans to move forward with the balloon festival next summer.  For more information on the event and tickets, visit https://ocballoonfest.com/.

White Marlin Open: Day 5- Come See Big Fish at the Final Countdown of the 50th Annual White Marlin Open

This year’s celebratory year was exactly that! A celebration of the tournament that started out as a small idea for Jim Moktsko to 50 years of out of this world deep sea bill fishing! The tournament that began with just 57 boats in 1974 to 400 boats 50 years later, people continue to flock to the White Marlin Capital of the World.

Is It True? They’ve Got a Blue?

Throughout the entire day, the rumor mill was spinning with news about Roshambo that hooked a blue marlin early in the morning and had been fighting the fish for over 7 hours! At 4pm the rumors continued with new of another boat that landed a blue marlin, a white marlin, a 75” tuna, and a big mahi! Big things were coming!

That First First Feeling on the Last Day

As the first boat approached the scales the crowds went wild! Reel Tight came in reporting a beautiful day on the water and 2 tuna on board. And skyrocketing to 1st place, Brian Stewart landed a 265 pound tuna bumping down the previous 247.5 pounder. The Skirt Chaser was waiting in the canal to weigh their white marlin! It was the first white marlin that has come to the scales in the 2023 WMO! It met the minimum length requirement but ended up just 3 pounds shy at 67 pounds. Despite the loss, the crew and anglers reported having the best time fishing out there today.

Pain Felt By All

Word came in at 5pm that Roshambo broke off their blue marlin after a 7 hour fight! The entire crowd felt the pain. No Limits came in with 112” marlin that didn’t make the length requirement. 2 big eyes came to the scales around 5:30 but didn’t make weight to top the leaderboard.

They’ve Got the Blues- Finally!

At quarter to 5 the Floor Reel came in with the first qualifying blue marlin! Everyone held their breath while the massive fish was hoisted onto the scale. And at 640.5 pounds the first blue marlin made it to the leaderboard. After that, many boats came in weighing sizable tuna however climbing to the leaderboard was not an option. With many of the tuna weighing under 200, it was difficult to match the leading tuna which were at that point in the mid 200’s.

A lot of different species of fish began to come through on the scales after 6:30. Boys Toy came in with a wahoo with Captain Tommy Gessler, who won the White Marlin Open back in 1993 when he was just 15 years old. His family fished the tournament together, continuing the tradition of bringing fish to the scales. Hall Pass came in with a second place mahi at 28.5 pounds.

Big Fish

A 50.5 pound mahi came in around 7pm and took over 1st place! The large fish came off of Roncito. The Shore Billy came in just after with a mahi weighing in at 23.5 pounds but was unable to crack the top 3.

At 8pm a mahi came to the scales weighing in at 32 pounds taking 2nd place. The Aquila donated the fish to the Maryland Food Bank.

By the end of the evening, fans were excited that a blue marlin finally came to the scales in addition to the massive dolphin.

We’ll See You Next Year!

Special thanks also goes to Catch n Carry for helping to filet the fish at the scales and the Maryland Food Bank for the incredible involvement over the years.

White Marlin Open- Day 4: Gearing Up for the Final Day

With 60 boats out fishing and a wicked storm that rolled through Ocean City’s Inlet in the early afternoon, it was an interesting day. Vendors at Marlin Fest lowered their tent walls in hopes of keeping their merchandise safe. They opened back up around 5 pm to continue the festivities and watch any new fish at the scales.

First fish to the scales today were off of Living Water and they brought in 5 tuna. A touching family story, as the patriarch of the family recently passed away just before the open. The Mohamad family told the White Marlin Open that their father fished for 49 straight opens- never missing one in between. Someone was obviously watching down as the family were able to boat their tuna on a day like today, with wind and weather. The family spoke a little about their father to Andy Motsko over at Harbor Island. “Fishing this tournament meant so much to him. It was really special for us to be able to come out here today and spend time as a family,” said his daughter.

The staff at Harbor Island entertained the crowds as they waited for the next boat to come in. White Marlin Open fans guessed the staff members weights to pass the time and win some free t-shirts. Around 7pm, Game Over came around the corner with a good size tuna they knew would be able to make an impact. Shaking up the leader board, their 221.5 pound big eye tuna is now in 2nd place worth about $160,000.

Rochambo came in quickly after with a 215 pound tuna taking 3rd place for $110,000. Then later that evening Reel Chaos had gotten into some engine trouble but still ended up bringing in a tuna around 8pm but it wasn’t enough for the leaderboard.

In first we still have Fishlik in the tuna category with a 247.5 tuna, Shooting Star with a first-place wahoo, and Maverick with a first place mahi. And at end of day 4, no bill fish had been brought to the scales.

The White Marlin Open: Many Boats Consider a Change in Strategy as the Final Day Approaches With No Marlin Weighed

It’s the proverbial “elephant in the room.” Or in this case “marlin in the room.” Where are all of the marlin on the scales this year?

The annual White Marlin Open is held the second full week in August for a reason. It’s the most opportune time in Ocean City to catch marlin as many anglers know. But many spectators and fans are asking, “Where are the marlin?”

Several Attempts but to No Avail

It’s not that there is a lack of marlin this year. It’s just that all of the marlin caught in this year’s tournament haven’t met the minimum size requirement. Measuring from the fork of the jaw to the fork of the tail, a white marlin must be 70” and a blue marlin must be 114″. As of Wednesday evening, 425 white marlin 33 blue marlin were reported caught and released.

They’re Out There

Angler Brian Eder with mate Sam Clark on the Desperado.

Brian Eder fished on the well-known Desperado out of Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. He and a group of 5 buddies have been fishing the open together for 5 years now. “The white marlin are out there. We went out the other morning and hooked up within the first 15 minutes.” As the anglers on Desperado hooked two marlins simultaneously, the boys went into game mode. Each guy has a designated “job,” whether it’s to reel in the other lines, or pull up the dredges. Others grab cameras and cellphones for documentation of the excitement of the moment. However Eder told me that other tournaments such as The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament out of North Carolina requires boats to video their catches as part of the rules.

Angler Jared Albert and mate Wes Parker on a white marlin release on the Desperado.

Eder along with Captain Gray Blount, mates Sam Clark and Wes Parker, and angler Taylor Fields came up with 2 mahi, 1 tuna, 3 white marlin released and 1 blue marlin release so far this week. They had an opportunity to land two more, but the it just wasn’t in the cards at the time.

Game Plans for Friday

A white marlin nears the boat but ends up not making the length.

The anglers on Desperado planned to get together to decide on what they wanted to target on Friday. Being this late in the tournament and still no bill fish on the leader board, the anglers had a tough decision to make. Do they go after that elusive white marlin that may or may not make length or do they target tuna and try to shake up the leaderboard with a massive tuna catch?

All In Fishing releases a white marlin in 2023.

Other boats had some similar experiences to Desperado. Captain Dave Midgett of All In Fishing commented that Monday was very slow which they then decided to switch it up a bit and try to target marlin. They went 0/1 on white marlin and released a blue. The blue marlin was between 110-112 inches, just short of qualifying length. “We were running a mixed spread for tuna, white marlin and blue marlin.” They fished all the way over in the Washington canyon like many others. Tomorrow’s plan is to stick strictly to marlin fishing and shoot for the big money.

The crew of Sea Devil head out on Monday for the first day of the 2023 White Marlin Open. Brad, Adam, Mike, David, Jonah

In the smaller boat category, the Sea Devil hasn’t had any bites all week long. However it’s not for a lack of trying. Their 31’ Jersey Cape chose to fish Monday and Wednesday, where they called the wind “sporty.” Their plan for tomorrow is to get out to the Washington Canyon. The team on the Sea Devil is made up of several members of the Tangier Classic, a 3 day fishing tournament open to the entire Chesapeake Bay! The 5 year old tournament is catch and photograph based where anglers load photos onto an app as opposed to bringing them to a scale. Vice president, Brad Taylor and secretary Adam Corry told us that The White Marlin Open has been a proud tournament partner of the Tangier Classic.

The Finish Line

white marlin open ocmd
Fly those flags high on the way back in anglers!

Whatever the master plan is for the last chance to get on the leaderboard, the lack of marlin at the scales is definitely not due to a lack of trying. To all captains, mates, an anglers- good luck and tight lines.

White Marlin Open: Day 3- Tuna Time

A busy day at the scales today as expected. Fishlik came in an hour after the scales opened with several tuna to start the night. With a 247.5 pound big eye tuna, Chris Mentlik from Street, Maryland took the lead knocking down the 199 pound tuna from Monday. At 5:30 that fish was worth $1.2 million and took about 2 hours to reel in. Not bad for a day on the water!

Reel Oppo-tuna-ty was waiting right behind them with a rare Allison tuna weighing in at 162.5 pounds sending themselves into 3rd place in the tuna category. The angler was Eddie Quick of Berlin, Maryland.

6:30 came quick and Full Service out of Middle River, Maryland came with a big eye weighing in at 203.5 rocketing to 2nd place in the tuna category. They reported beautiful weather out on the Atlantic today! And a beautiful pay out as of right now that 2nd place tuna is worth $95,000.

Several boats came in flying upside down white and blue marlin flags such as Desperado, Billfisher, and Maverick.

Last years big winner, Jeremy Duffy of the Billfisher brought in a small tuna around 55 pounds but didn’t make it to the leaderboard. Last year Duffy landed the $4.5 million white marlin in the 2022 White Marlin Open. As more tuna were brought to the scales, Hunter Clark of Sparrows Point, Maryland tried his luck and weighed a 58 pound tuna on Just One More. Another tuna was weighed from the same boat. It also did not qualify. Unreel made their way to the scales weighing in a 53 pound tuna, but all eyes were on their puppy who was along for the ride wearing an adorable hat!

Two Times the Tuna

Today’s weigh in had a two special weigh ins. Two Allison Tuna were caught. One on the Summagirl and one on the Reel Oppor-tuna-ty. Allison tuna have long yellow dorsal and anal fins. Allison tuna are also called long- finned tuna.

Mahi Movement

The Will M., on the Maverick brought in  31 pound Mahi taking the lead in the Mahi category. The minimum weight for a mahi is 20 pounds. Only one other mahi was weighed so far this week. It was a 21 pounder off of the Hey Buddy from New Smyrna, Florida.

The Undertaker came in with a mahi a little after 7pm. And with a 26 pound mahi, CJ Wallace took 2nd! The angler report having a great time fair weather.

Wahoo! The Fish That Literally Screams Fun

Francis Johnson of the Sea Fix weighed in a 40 pound wahoo landing on the leaderboard.

The scales were busy as expected today. Fish came in a heavy flow from 5:15 until the closing at 9:15.

At the end of the night the Fishlik stayed strong at the top with a 247.5 pound tuna, Shooting Star stayed in first with their 57 pound wahoo, and Maverick in first with their 31 pound mahi. There were no billfish brought to the scales for the second day in a row in addition to no swordfish.

White Marlin Open: Day 2- High Winds Effect A Number of Boats from Fishing

It was a slower day for fishing in the 50th annual White Marlin Open out of Ocean City. With extreme winds blowing up to 20-25 miles per hour, ideal fishing conditions were not in anyone’s favor. However that didn’t deter 22 boats from going out and challenging the weather to catch that $50,000 heaviest marlin.

Hot Pursuit for the Daily Tuna

white marlin open inlet fishing
Boats chug through the Ocean City Inlet showing off their daily catches by flying their flags high.

No Limits out of Indian River brought in the first fish of the day. There is a 50 pound minimum which the large tuna surpassed at 56 pounds and only took about 15 minutes to get in the boat. The brave boat reported 10-12 foot waves out in the middle of the Atlantic but it all seemed to be worth it to win that heaviest tuna of the day. The odds were in their favor as they were only challenging 21 other boats for the day. The heaviest day of tuna is worth $70,000.

But hot on their tails were Sea Wolf of North Carolina coming to the scales just minutes later to weigh in 2 tuna! Fans of the tournament held their breath as the two fish were slowly raised, one weighing in a 37 pounds and the other at 47 pounds. A close pursuit but to no avail.

The Blue Runner came in later that night at 8:10pm with a 54.5 pound tuna.

Weighing Wahoo

John Harris of the Shooting Star brought in a 57 pound wahoo around 8:30pm. The team fished on a 29′ foot boat that rocked back and forth in todays wind, but got themselves on the board in first place earning $2,000 as of right now. John reported that after they boated the wahoo, they spotted a big eye tuna hanging around the boat but couldn’t get him to bite.

Where are the Marlin?

It’s already the second day of the tournament and no marlin have been to the scales? As of today 225 white marlin have been caught and released in addition to 19 blue marlin. But they just haven’t had the length to them. As the week continues, we’ll be looking for more movement on the leaderboard. We’ll see everyone tomorrow at Marlin Fest.

Guide to Jeep Week 2024

Sand, sun and off-road fun: that’s what Ocean City Jeep Week is all about. Jeeps are the ultimate ride to the beach, which is why Ocean City has been hosting Jeep Week every summer since 2010. In 2024, the off-roading extravaganza is happening from May 9-12th 2024, and you don’t even need a jeep of your own (though it helps!) to enjoy all the festivities that the weekend has to offer.

So what goes on during Jeep Week?

Short answer: a lot.

You’re going to want to clear your calendar and get plenty of rest, because the weekend is jam-packed (no pun intended) with activities, displays and family fun. You’ll meet tons of 4 x 4 enthusiasts – between participants and spectators, the weekend’s total attendance is around 13,500 people, and it only gets bigger and bigger every year – and have time to talk Jeep at all the parties and events that go on all weekend long.

Here’s just an idea of what you can expect (while the full calendar of events and times can be found online).

The beach crawl starts at the Inlet parking lot and heads north, exiting at 30th Street.

Schedule

  • Wednesday May 8th:
  • Vendor setup 8am – 6pm
  • Vendor Welcome Party at Crawl Street Tavern
  • Thursday May 9th:
  • 6:30am – 10:00am Beach Crawl
  • 9:00am – 5:00pm Vendors
  •  Sand Course: Shift 1 9am – 11am, Shift 2 12pm – 2pm, Shift 3 3pm – 5pm
  • Welcome Party Fish Tales 5pm
  • Friday May 10th:
  • 6:30am – 10:00am Beach Crawl
  • 9:00am – 5:00pm Vendors
  • Sand Course: Shift 1 9am – 11am, Shift 2 12pm – 2pm, Shift 3 3pm – 5pm
  • Light Show Wild Bills 6pm – 10pm

  • Sand Course: Shift 1 9am – 11am, Shift 2 12pm – 2pm

Beach Crawl:  Everyday 7:30-9:15 AM ish

This year, the beach crawl will start at the Inlet lot and head north.

Each morning, 250 Jeeps drive up the beach from the Pier to 30th Street. It’s basically a parade of cars but better, because it doesn’t stop traffic, and if you’re a lover of Jeeps and lounging on the beach, the Crawl is a dream come true. It starts at 7.30am every morning, so if you arrive a little early, you can catch the sunrise and enjoy a moment’s peace before the Jeep lovin’ chaos begins.

Kicker Sand Courses

The coolest part of the entire weekend might just be the Kicker Sand Courses. Riding it is sure to be an adrenaline-packed adventure, and watching it just about as much fun! With its twists, turns, and bumps along the sandy terrain, it makes for an exhilarating experience. Plus, the fact that it’s available all four days adds even more excitement and opportunity for fun.

Parties –

You know you’re about to have a great weekend when there’s a party happening every night. The party lineup changes every year, but in 2024, the Welcome Party is at Fish Tales on May 9 at 5pm, and Friday’s After Show Get Together starts at 6pm at Wild Bills – and the “Light Show” will be back in Downtown Ocean City. Saturday’s entertainment includes the After Party de Lazy Lizard 6pm, then Purple Moose 10pm.

How can I prepare?

First, if you have a Jeep of your own and want to participate in all the festivities, be sure to register online (the sooner the better). You’ll get access to all the weekend’s events for two adults, and additional passes are available for purchase, too.

Book your hotel ahead of time. It’s going to be a busy weekend, and if you book sooner rather than later, you’ll be able to take advantage of the Jeep Week discounts at select hotels.

Find a hotel now!

If you’re bringing your family and aren’t super familiar with Ocean City, learn a little bit about all the amusements and kid-friendly fun the town has to offer. Jeep Week is a family-friendly event, but if the kids want to hit the go karts or play a round of mini golf, there are plenty of places for that in Ocean City.

White Marlin Open 2023: Day 1- The Day of the Tuna

Day 1 of the 2023 50th anniversary of the million-dollar White Marlin Open brought excitement and hope for captains, anglers, and spectators alike. Out of 400 boats registered, 378 boats braved the windy Atlantic and got ahead of the rain, lightening, and tornado warning that came in later in the evening hours. The first boat to arrive at the scales flying a flag was a tuna weighing in a 52 pounds from Phenom 37. As the evening continued, several boats made it back to the Ocean City Buoy. Unfortunately they came in empty handed. But by the end of the evening, it was reported that 92 white marlins were caught and released.

However day 1 did not disappoint the tuna category! Did you know that several species of tuna can qualify for the WMO ? Here’s the low down on what kind of tuna qualify for the White Marlin Open.

Yellow Fin Tuna

A yellow fin tuna has noticeable brightly colored fins as the name suggests.

Yellow fin tuna gets their name from the brightly colored yellow dorsal and anal fins. Their bodies are a bit more slender than other tuna species. And the color of their bellies change from a yellow color to a silver. They also have a yellow stripe down the middle of their sides.

Big Eye Tuna

Like the name indicates, the big eye tuna has eyes much larger than other tuna species. The color on the top part is a darker blue and the underside and belly are white. The fins are a deep yellow color, much like the yellow fin, however the color is less bright and predominant.

Bluefin Tuna

Bluefin tuna are more rounded in shape than other tuna species.

The largest of the tuna species, this fish can get up to 2,000 pounds. They have a darker blue color on the top of the bodies and white underbellies. Their torpedo shaped bodies are more rounded in the middle compared to other tuna. The dorsal fin is a reddish brown color and they have short pectoral fins.

A Million Dollar Tuna

This 199 pound tuna takes first place on Monday in the 2023 tournament.

The minimum weight requirement for tuna in the tournament is 50 pounds. The largest tuna to ever be weighed in the White Marlin Open was 245.5 pounds caught on the Southern C’s out of Ocean City. By the end of the evening, 29 tuna were boated. The heaviest weighed in at a whopping 199 pounds making it worth $1 million! It was boated on the Instigator by Rob Wagner of Blue Bell, PA. In second place there’s a tuna weighting in at 118 pounds off of Bow Down from Shark River, New Jersey. The fish was boated by Angelo Ponte. And the current 3rd place tuna weighed in 64.5 pounds on Skid Row, a local boat, out of Ocean City, Maryland. And that fish was boated by Phil Houck.

We wish good luck to the 22 boats that went out and braved the winds that are reported to get up to 30 miles per hour today. Fingers crossed that the first white marlin of the 2023 White Marlin Open comes in soon!
