OCEAN CITY, MD (September 27, 2024) – The Art League of Ocean City invites the community to explore the universal theme of connection through its new exhibition, “The Red Thread: The Common Thread of Connection Through Art.” Curated by Deborah Rolig, the show opens with a First Friday reception on October 4th from 5-8 p.m. at the Ocean City Center for the Arts.

This free event will feature refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, and a captivating performance by the Saltare in Elementis Dance Collective. Attendees are encouraged to embrace the theme by wearing red or a red rose.

“The Red Thread symbolizes the interconnectedness of humanity across cultures,” says Rolig. “This exhibition showcases artists’ unique interpretations of this concept, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connections to others and the world around them.”

The Thaler Gallery will feature works by Rolig, Dee Gray, Seth Apter, and other renowned artists. The Sisson Galleria will host a diverse, all-media group show, with cash prizes awarded to selected winners. Additionally, the Spotlight Gallery will display student artwork, Studio E will present a Community Weaving Project, and Rolig will showcase her jewelry in the Artisan Showcase.

Throughout October, special events related to the “Red Thread” theme will be offered, including a free Yoga and Sound Healing Workshop and a discussion on “The Power of Connection.” A creative writing retreat led by Nancy Mitchell is also scheduled.

The exhibition runs through October 26th at the Arts Center, with satellite galleries showcasing works by Lisa Guerriero and Theresa Alo through December.

Harrison’s Harbor Watch: Bringing Fine Dining to Ocean’s Calling 2024

Fries and beer, wraps and sodas, funnel cakes and lemonade! The ultimate festival food. But Harrison’s Harbor Watch at the very south end of the boardwalk is bringing some upscale dishes to you festival experience. Let’s talk about how the food game is taking it to another notch with Harrison’s Harbor Watch.

Don’t get me wrong, festival food is great! But my stomach can only take so much and after hours of being outdoors and trekking through the sand, I deserve a top of the line meal. Which is why I went to Harrison’s. 

Harrison’s is located inside of the Ocean’s Calling Festival area just to the right of the Rockville Stage (If you’re looking at the stage.). We walked pass the Carousel Stage to gain access to the boardwalk and made our way south. After taking in the views of the inlet, we walked int he front door and were greeted by some very lovely ladies who immediately took us to our table. No wait! Our waitress had mentioned that people weren’t sitting for long at their tables because they wanted a good meal but then wanted to quickly rush back to the stages so they wouldn’t miss their favorite band. Smart!

We were looking for both a nice place to sit and see the inlet view but also incredibly delicious food. And that’s exactly that we got! We ordered a beer and soda (beer was half the price from the concert venues- no shame, just facts.) We started off by sharing a hot, steamy bowl of Maryland crab soup which came out with loads of crab meat! My husband even said it was the best crab soup he’s ever had. 

It was very challenging to order dinner due to the variety of the menu- seafood, surf and turf, rockfish, shrimp! It all sounded so good. We decided to go with the steamed mussels and lemon basil chicken. The mussels came out piping hot doused in the most creamy buttery garlic sauce that could only be described as heaven! The lemon basil chicken came with a very large portion that also came in a thick white creamy sauce that tasted fresh and delightful. It was exactly that we wanted.

Have you seen them around the beach? They’re the people usually dressed in black toting around large cameras and backpacks full of lenses, plastic sleeves for rain (we’ve had some) and phone chargers. They’re the photographers of Ocean’s Calling!

They seem to have it all! The cool job, access to the stage, and a cool nonchalant attitude that goes with the job. And it’s true they are a cool group of people. Let’s learn a little about their job and what it takes to be a concert photographer.

Weeks in advance, concert photographers begin reaching out to Ocean’s Calling and public relations contacts for musical artists of Ocean’s Calling asking for permission to “shoot” the concert or musician. Heavy background checks and lengthy examinations of portfolios, Instagram pages, Facebook posts, and websites are considered when choosing who gets to document these incredible performers. And only top of the line photographers are chosen. Once a photographer receives and approval email the real work begins. 

Prep Work For Ocean’s Calling

Photographers often study previous shows of artists to learn their cadence, moves, where they might stand or a “special something” they may do on stage. Having previous knowledge of an artist gives them an advantage for location and best shot angles. 

Meeting Point: Stage Left or Stage Right

Photographers have a meeting point, either stage left or right, depending on the venue. At the meeting point several photographers assemble waiting for their “escort” to take them to the front of the stage. The rule of thumb is that photographers get to shoot the first three songs then they must leave the front of the stage. 

Hours of editing commence after the show to come up with those perfect shots that you see in magazines, online, and news media outlets.

Oceans Calling Music Festival Provides Access For Festival Goers by Providing Sign Language Interpreters

The highly anticipated music festival in Ocean City, Maryland, Oceans Calling, is making huge headlines. Yes, they have top of the line talent. Yes, they have world renowned chefs. But that’s not the reason for the hype. Oceans Calling is providing equal access to deaf music lovers attending the three day concert by providing sign language interpreters for the shows!

Where Can You See an Interpreter

Looking at the schedule ahead, all three days of the concert have shows where a sign language interpreter will be positioned near or on the stage off to the side, signing the lyrics/ concepts of the songs. Day one of the concert, there will be sign language interpreters for several shows including Phillip Phillips, 311, Sublime, Blink 182, and O.A.R. Day two large names like Switchfoot, Young the Giant, The Beach Boys, All American Rejects, and The Killers will have interpreting services. And the last day of the concert Blues Traveler, Mt. Joy, Counting Crows, Boyz II Men, and Dave Matthews Band will have interpreters. 

How Sign Language Interpreters Prepare for a Show

Like any other job, interpreting requires a lot of preparation. We were able to speak to some sign language interpreters and get some insight. Sarah Scarborough, an interpreter of over ten years, tells us- “I spend ALOT of time prepping for shows. I print off scripts or lyrics and then work with my team to divide everything up evenly. If it’s music related, I listen to the songs over and over until I have the lyrics and interpretation memorized.” Interpreter Sheri Levy states that she practices songs as much as possible. If no materials are provided, such as a set list, I do as much research as I can viewing material on YouTube and the internet.” Some shows that Levy and Scarborough have interpreted for are Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Panic! At the Disco, and Jeff Dunham. Both ladies have a background and interest  in performing arts, making sign language interpreting a great fit for a career. When asked about the hardest part of the job, Levy says that interpreting unfamiliar material such as sports (for her) is a challenge. Scarborough reveals that keeping your opinion to yourself is hard. Interpreters are there to help facilitate communication between the deaf and hearing world. 

Deaf Necessarily Doesn’t Mean Inability to Hear

One might ask, why would someone who is deaf go to a concert? A valid question for someone who is not educated in the deaf community. In reality, thousands of people who are deaf attend concerts around the world every year. When people hear the word “deaf,” they automatically think about the inability to hear. 

However when someone is deaf, there is a very large spectrum of hearing loss. Deaf concert goers may have mild hearing loss, wear hearing aids to amplify the music, or may have lost hearing later in life. Others may have lost their hearing at one point in life but not a love for music. Music lover, Rebecca Moir, Deaf hair stylist and owner of Glam by Becca tells us how having an interpreter changes the concert experience for her. “It makes me feel a part of everything. I’m able to see what hearing people hear.” When asked about her first experience at a concert with an interpreter, she told us, “I thought it was amazing!” Rebecca attends several concerts yearly around the Maryland area. 

Large concerts like Oceans Calling give off lots of different vibrations around the venue. While deaf patrons may not be able to hear, vibrations from the musical instruments, large screaming crowds, and gigantic speakers and amplifiers add to their experience.

Everyone was pumped up and ready for the first day of the second annual Ocean’s Calling Festival 2024 in Ocean City, Maryland. Last year was the first time a large musical event was held in our small beach down and it was unanimous- we wanted more!

Three stages were erected earlier this week, one near North Division Street (Sea Bright Stage), one outside of Trimper’s Haunted House (Carousel Stage), and the last (Rockville Stage) at the very end of the inlet parking lot facing the famous Ocean City Ferris Wheel on the Jolly Roger Pier. This year’s line up promised bigger and better. Here are the top 10 highlights from opening night of Ocean’s Calling 2024 in Ocean City, Maryland

From Rockville Maryland, OAR performed again this year gracing us with their unique voices, stellar trumpet playing, and middle school nostalgia that only us 35-45 year old would understand. When their last song came on, That Was a Crazy Game of Poker, the poker cards began to fly- a tradition that concert goers began years ago.

Winona Fighter: Even Stars Have Parents in the Crowd

 

The lead singer of Winona Fighter, Coco Kinnon, wowed the crowd earlier in the day on the Sea Bright Stage. Her powerhouse voice and carefree outlook on life clear as she got the crowd going. But the most heart felt part of their set was when Coco gave a shout out to her parents in the crowd for always supporting her dream of being in a punk band. The camera panned over to her mom and dad, her number one supporters. They waved back and mouthed “I love you.”

At 4:15 at the Rockville Stage, The Darkness, gave an electrifying performance that can only be described as high energy and vibrant. But at one point, lead singer, British musician Justin Hawkins brought up recent Ocean City news. Chatting with the crowd in between songs, Hawkins mentioned the recent drug paraphernalia washing up on shore of our beautiful beaches. Trying to lighten the mood on the situation, Hawkins joked, “I heard that you guys had recently had some drug paraphernalia washing up on shore. To be honest, I was hoping to see some of it- it would remind me of my childhood.” Giving the crowd a laugh, Hawking continued to take the stage and make it his own- at one point doing a head stand and even a high jump that Simone Biles would have trouble doing!

Towards the beginning of the day, Jason Biggs, lead actor in the hysterically funny American Pie movies series, emcees the festival. He came out joking with the crowd as he introduced newbee to Ocean’s Calling Exectutive Chef Marc Murphy. Murphy, a star chef on The Food Network, demoed delicious food on The Carousel Stage as fans ooed and aahed! I wonder which restaurants he’s eaten at in Ocean City, MD. What would you recommend?

Where’s Blink 182???

The headliner of Friday’s concert was Blink 182 and let’s be honest, most of Friday’s attendees were there to see Mark, Travis, and Tom. But as their time slot approached, so did the rain…and more rain…and even more rain. Their set was supposed to start at 9:30. Photographers were ushered towards the back tent area to their places and there they waited, and waited, and waited. The crowds were antsy, soaked, and by that point buzzed. Stage hands began to cover electronics as crowds booed since they’d all been standing there for over 30 minutes with no updates about the start time. Rain pelted even harder but lightened up at one point. Around 10:20, Blink 182 took the stage and crowds were thrilled- until the sound was almost non-existent at certain areas of the beach. We made our way towards the back where the sound was way better but the rain had gotten so bad that the vibe was gone. By that time, I had decided to leave knowing that we still had to walk 23 blocks back home. Better luck next time, Blink.

The line up for day 2 of Ocean’s Calling promises to be full of incredible music! By biggest decision of the day though…Do I go to see The Beach Boys or The All American Rejects???

September 26th marked a significant day for beer and food enthusiasts in downtown Berlin as the Berlin Beer Co. officially opened its doors to the public. The much-anticipated brewery, located in the heart of downtown Berlin, not only boasts its own craft beers but also welcomes the renowned Street Kitchen, formerly a beloved food truck, as its resident culinary partner.

Berlin is only fifteen minutes from the southern end of Ocean City and it’s worth the drive.  Filled with small restaurants, the Atlantic Hotel, lots of great shops, and a Mermaid Museum, Berlin MD can now boast TWO local craft breweries and a distillery.  Burley Oak set up shop in Berlin in 2011.  Forgotten 50 Distilling opened its doors in August just over a year ago.  The Buzz Meadery opened across Route 113 during Covid and now the Berlin Beer Co is open full time.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected, creating a vibrant atmosphere around the Inlet.

But, even if you’re not attending the festival, Ocean City still has plenty to offer this weekend. Along with enjoying a leisurely stroll on the iconic Boardwalk, and relaxing on our beautiful sandy beach, you could try your hand at watersports like jet skiing or pontoon boating, or take the family mini golfing or rope climbing!  And, whether you’re seeking delicious food and drink specials, live music, or sports action, you’ll find it all across town, from the Inlet right up to North Ocean City.

Traffic Pattern Expectations for Oceans Calling

Ocean City is buzzing with excitement as the Oceans Calling Festival approaches and traffic changes are coming! To ensure smooth traffic flow and prioritize the safety of festival-goers and residents, the Ocean City Police Department will be implementing some changes to the usual traffic patterns.

Key Traffic Changes to Expect:

Evening Restrictions:

Starting around 8 p.m. each night of the festival (September 27-29), traffic will be prohibited south of N. Division Street.

Route 50 Bridge:

The southbound turn lane off the US Route 50 bridge onto Philadelphia Avenue will be limited to emergency vehicles, mass transit, and residents only.

Detours:

Vehicles heading south will be redirected onto N. Division Street and then north on Baltimore Avenue.Southbound traffic on St. Louis Avenue will be restricted to emergency vehicles, residents, employees, and downtown patrons, with other traffic directed towards 2nd Street and then Philadelphia Avenue.

Baltimore Avenue Lane Reductions:

Northbound traffic on Baltimore Avenue between S. Division Street and Talbot Street will be reduced to one lane for vehicles. The middle lane will be used for mass transit staging, and the right lane will serve as a safety lane.

Why These Changes?

These traffic modifications are designed to facilitate the movement of mass transit vehicles and pedestrians leaving the festival area each night.

OC Beach Bus Updates:

The OC Beach Bus will be operating on a reduced-stop, express service schedule to help with crowd movement. Some stops will be temporarily inactive, but riders needing special mobility assistance can arrange pickups by calling Dispatch at (410) 723-1606. Everything is moving up in Ocean City for 2025.  Springfest is moving into April and Cruisin’ Ocean City is moving up two weeks.

  • Springfest 2025: This popular four-day festival which was originally scheduled for May 2-5, 2025 will now be held one week earlier, from April 24-27, 2025.
  • Cruisin’ Ocean City 2025: Cruisin’ was originally scheduled for May 15-18 has been rescheduled to May 1-4, 2025.

Reasoning Behind the Changes to Springfest and Cruisin’ Ocean City

In a joint statement from the Town of Ocean City and the organizers of Cruisin’, Tom Perlozzo is quoted, “As our shoulder seasons continue to evolve, we have begun to look closely at our event calendar, and we have made adjustments that we think will benefit our events and our community,” commented Ocean City’s director of tourism and business development, Tom Perlozzo. “After three decades, Cruisin’ Ocean City has built a long-standing relationship with our businesses, residents, and visitors. Although change can be challenging, we believe the new event dates will greatly benefit the event’s overall success.”

  • The Town of Ocean City and event organizers want to create a more cohesive festival experience for visitors.
  • The new dates will help the events grow and attract more people to Ocean City in the spring.
  • For Cruisin’ Ocean City, the change will allow for full use of the Roland E. Powell Convention Center’s Exhibit Halls space.
