Pets are not allowed in certain areas, such as the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and some backcountry campsites. In areas where pets are allowed, they must be kept on a leash.
For the State Beach:
Day Use Areas
โข Pets allowed in day use areas after Labor Day to the Friday of Memorial Day
weekend
โข Pets allowed on the Rackliffe Trail on the mainland
Campground
โข During the camping season (last week of April – November 1st), pets allowed
only in camp loops G, H, and I and adjoining beaches
โข During the camping season (last week of April- November 1), pets allowed on
the hiker/biker path on the west side of Campground Road only
โข When the campground is closed (November 1st- third week of April), pets are
permitted in all campground loops and the beach
Marina
โข Pets allowed in marina areas
For the National Park:
Pets are permitted only in specific areas of the Maryland portion of the National Seashore. Please manage your pets. Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times! Please pick up after your pet.The hot sand and sun can be harder on your pet than it is on you. Unattended and unrestrained animals can disturb and harm island wildlife and other park visitors.
Pets are prohibited in the following areas to protect wildlife, habitat and visitors:

โข All backcountry campsites
โข Nature trails
โข Lifeguard-protected beach
โข Portions of Assateague State Park
โข North of the State Park to the Ocean City inlet
*Pets are prohibited in the entire Virginia portion of Assateague Island, even in your car. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages nearly all of the land area on the Virginia portion of Assateague Island as Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
