The landscape is flat and there are miles of country roads to explore. In Ocean City, a favorite place to ride your bicycle is along the famous Ocean City boardwalk. There are times when bikes are allowed and times when they aren’t. The rules for biking the boards are listed below. If you want a longer ride, try some of the Worcester County biking trails and country roads. You can bike to Assateague Island and then enjoy the wild ponies, amazing birds, and other wildlife as you bike the bicycle and walking trail.

Rules for Biking the Boards
Bicycles, pushcarts, Class 1 Electronic Bikes and EPAMDS are allowed on the Boardwalk during the following times;
- From Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, between 2:00 a.m. – Noon.
- From Tuesday after Labor Day through Friday before Memorial Day at any time subject to the following exceptions: Springfest and Sunfest (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), between 2:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon of the same day.
- Class 2 & 3 Electric bicycles are not allowed on the boardwalk at any time.
If you want to go in to eat or just take a break, there are bike racks scattered along the boardwalk where you can safely park your bike. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Ocean City by bicycle!

Glenn Irwin is our OC Bike Guy. Glenn “retired” in March, 2023 after almost 23 years as Executive Director of the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC). The OCDC is a nonprofit organization that is charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City. It is involved in a variety of projects and programs including renovation of older buildings, public art program, special events, design standards, employee housing, and promoting the downtown and boardwalk. Glenn lives in Ocean City and regularly rides throughout the downtown area and boardwalk for exercise and pleasure several times per week, often year-round, depending on weather conditions.

Northside Park is also a wonderful spot for a leisurely bike ride, especially for families with young children. The park features an outdoor playground and plenty of park benches where you can pause, relax, and take in the scenic views. With bike-friendly paths and a peaceful atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a sunny day.
Looking for a leisurely bike ride with stunning ocean views and the chance to see wildlife? Head to Assateague Island National Seashore. Cyclists can access the island via a dedicated bike and pedestrian bridge near the Visitor Center, making it easy to start your adventure.
The main bike path stretches about four miles through beautiful island landscapes, including Bayberry Drive and Oceanside Campground Road. Along the way, you’ll ride past scenic salt marshes, pine forests, and rolling sand dunes, with plenty of opportunities to spot the island’s famous wild ponies, deer, and coastal birds. With its flat terrain and well-maintained paths, this ride is perfect for cyclists of all skill levels.
If you’re looking for a longer outing, there’s also a 3½-mile paved bike route connecting Maryland Route 611 to the island and through the park. For a more adventurous ride, try the 9-mile journey from Ocean City Inlet, heading west on U.S. Route 50 to Route 611 and then south to Assateague Island.

Ready to sit down and enjoy a meal or drink while watching the boardwalk activity? You will find casual dining along the entire boardwalk featuring many different styles of food. We love Backshore Brewing at 10th Street. It’s the only brewery actually in Ocean City and if you go, ask for Nate. He’s the brewer there and will make you feel welcome! Shenanigan’s Irish Pub is a favorite year-round, but particularly on St. Patrick’s Day. If a Guinness or Smithwick’s calls, this should be your destination. They have great burgers too!
