Camping at the beach or at least in the Ocean City area can add more layers of fun, particularly in the Spring and Fall. At Assateague, there are state and federal parks with tent and RV camping opportunities.  There is primitive camping by reservation as well as access to bathrooms and changing areas in the easy access areas.   There are also a number of camping options in nearby Worcester and Wicomico Counties where you can enjoy the proximity of the beach and still camp in a forest on a river.  There are many facilities available within a half hour of Ocean City. Bayside & Oceanside Tent and RV Campgrounds

Assateague Island is an exceedingly popular camping destination, and not just for its proximity to Ocean City. In fact, many families camp on Assateague without even making a single trip to the boardwalk (although it is always a fun summer night excursion). Pitch your tent or park your RV among the wild ponies at Assateague’s National or State Park, which offer bayside and oceanside camping for big and small groups, as well as easy access to paddle boarding, kayaking, scenic hiking and bike trails and other recreational activities. More information is available on the  National Park Service website.

Camping in the Ocean City, Md region

There’s really nothing like enjoying all the entertainment and fun that Ocean City has to offer while also basking in the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. Soak up some sun on the beach during the daytime, then come back to your tent at night to sleep under the stars–nothing’s better than that. While there aren’t any campgrounds in Ocean City proper, there are a number of sites nearby that allow easy access to the town of OC. Popular camp sites in the region inclued:

Camping in Ocean City

  • Can I rent an RV for a weekend trip to Ocean City?

    Yes. Several regional campgrounds and outfitters offer short-term RV rentals for weekend or multi-day stays near Ocean City, in addition to standard tent and hookup sites. Availability is tightest in peak summer months, so it's worth booking a few weeks ahead for busy weekends.

  • Can I keep a camper or trailer at a campground year-round?

    Some campgrounds in the Ocean City area offer seasonal or year-round storage for trailers and campers, so you don't have to tow it back and forth each visit. Policies and pricing vary by campground — contact the individual campground directly to confirm year-round or seasonal site availability. You cannot leave campers at Assateague.

  • Where can I get a camping guide or brochure for the Ocean City area?

    The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and individual campgrounds like Frontier Town, Sun Outdoors Ocean City Gateway, and Castaways RV Resort all offer visitor guides and site maps, either online or by request.   • Is camping available on Assateague Island?

  • Are there campgrounds inside Ocean City itself?

    No — there are no campgrounds within Ocean City proper. The closest options are just outside town in Worcester County (including Assateague) and nearby Wicomico County, most within a 30-minute drive of the boardwalk.

  • Can you camp with pets at Ocean City–area campgrounds?

    Many regional campgrounds allow pets, though rules on leashing, designated pet areas, and breed or size restrictions vary by property. Assateague has its own pet policies for camping loops — check the Assateague guide for specifics before bringing your dog along. You cannot bring pets to Chincoteague, the Virginia side of Assateague Island. You can't even have them in your car.
