The Grocery Shopping Can Wait: An Hour of Pure Relaxation at Tifferson’s
Sometimes the to-do list can wait. A spur-of-the-moment Radiant Renewal Facial at Tifferson’s in West Ocean City turned into one glorious hour of relaxation, pampering, and a much-needed escape from real life.

How many times have you thought, “I'd love to treat myself to a facial… or a massage… or just ONE glorious hour where nobody needs anything from me”? And then real life barges in. There’s work, kids, grocery shopping, oil changes, laundry, yard work, and a schedule that never seems to have a spare afternoon, and somehow the special treat recedes into the background once again.
Well, not today! Sometimes you just have to ignore that to-do list and make a little time for yourself.
I walked into Tifferson’s Beauty and Wellness in West Ocean City after making my appointment just an hour earlier. It was a completely spur-of-the-moment decision—which, as it turns out, was probably, for me, the best way to do it. There was no time to second-guess myself, look at my to-do list, or decide that grocery shopping, laundry, or some other thrilling responsibility should come first.
Because that’s what happens, isn’t it? We think about treating ourselves to something special, but real life gets in the way, and once again, we put ourselves at the bottom of the list.
Not this time.

I had booked a Radiant Renewal Facial, which promised to reveal my skin’s natural glow—a glow that, I feared, may have gone missing a few decades ago.
I made my way upstairs, opened the door, and immediately felt as though I’d stepped into another world. The room was calm and dimly lit, candles flickered, soft music played in the background, and a carefully chosen blend of aromatherapy oils filled the air. Eucalyptus, lavender, citrus and maybe a little sandalwood surrounded me. Add in the gentle sound of trickling water somewhere nearby, and it was very clear: we weren’t in Kansas anymore.
My consultant, Deema, led me to the treatment table, where I slipped under a neatly folded cover and immediately felt the gentle warmth underneath me begin to work its magic. My hair was pulled away from my face, I closed my eyes, and that was pretty much the last I saw of the real world for the next hour.
Deema began with a lotion, gently working it over my face. Was she cleansing? Moisturizing? Performing some sort of skincare wizardry? I’m not entirely sure, but whatever she was doing felt wonderful.

And then something remarkable happened: my brain switched off, and that, it has to be said, does not happen often.
Warm towels were placed over my face and neck, followed by more creams, lotions and treatments. At one point, Deema used cooling cryo globes to gently glide over my skin, seemingly smoothing away wrinkles, worries and anything else that had decided to take up residence on my face.
And while the facial was the main event, my face certainly wasn’t getting all the attention. Deema worked lotion into my neck and shoulders, gently stretching and massaging away some of the tension I’d apparently been carrying around with me. She continued down my arms and into my hands, even kneading my palms.
By this point, I had completely surrendered.
For one whole hour, I had absolutely nothing to do except lie there and enjoy it. No phone. No emails. No errands. Nobody asking me a question. Nothing.
And I didn’t want it to end.
In fact, somewhere around the halfway point, I decided this should probably become a daily requirement. Imagine if we all spent an hour like this every day. We’d surely walk around a little lighter, a lot more relaxed, quite possible a nicer person, and much better prepared for whatever life decided to throw at us.
Sadly, nobody had consulted my schedule about making this a daily occurrence, and eventually my hour was up.
I had stayed awake through the entire treatment, but I’m not sure I’ve ever felt quite so relaxed. I slowly sat up, made my way downstairs, stepped back into the daylight and reluctantly rejoined real life.
And yes, the errands were still there waiting for me.
But they somehow didn’t seem quite as important anymore.
It was an hour very well spent.
So, if you’re like me and regularly think, “One day I’m going to book a facial,” stop thinking about it and actually do it. Better yet, make a spur-of-the-moment appointment before you have time to talk yourself out of it.
Or treat someone you love. Tifferson’s offers plenty of treatments to choose from, so there’s something for just about anyone who could use a little time away from the real world.
As for me? I’m hooked. A facial every day might be wishful thinking—and more’s the pity—but I’ll definitely be making more time for a little pampering in the future.
The grocery shopping can wait an hour.
