Old Glory is flying high all across town, fireworks are filling the sky, and Route 50 traffic started on Wednesday, it must be July 4th weekend in Ocean City, Maryland! If you’ve celebrated America’s birthday here before, you already know Independence Day kicks off a summer-long party that lasts through Labor Day. Forget about the 90 degree temperatures, Ocean City heats up on the holiday weekend regardless of the weather, giving you more events, more entertainment, and more attractions for the ultimate vacation experience.
Here’s a sample of the awesome activities Ocean City has to offer this week:
Friday, after your eardrums have fully recovered from fireworks and you shake that holiday hangover, head to 94th St for the July opening reception at the Ocean City Center for the Arts. Enjoy some peace and quiet while you check out fine art from local and regional artists at the Beverly Bassford Memorial Exhibit or the People, Places, and Things exhibit in the Galleria, featuring the works of Laura Era. Paintings and photography by Robert and Diane Heron will also be on display at the event and Robert Heron, author of ‘Artful Deception’ will be signing copies of his book and answering questions for fans.
If you’re looking for a little more action, the Convention Center has you covered on Saturday as it hosts the sports entertainment extravaganza known as WWE. Join Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler, World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio, and more of your favorite professional wrestlers for a night of in ring action that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Whether you like larger than life characters, great feats of human strength, or athletic guys wearing spandex, WWE live shows offer hours of excitement to keep the whole family entertained.
Once you’ve seen the superstars of the WWE showing off their speed, strength, and other skills, you may be compelled to do some competing of your own. If so, the weekly Tuesday night Beach Olympics give you and the whole family a chance to show what you’re made of. This free event takes place on the 27th St beach from 6:30-8:30pm and includes events for all ages.
Tuesday July 9 also marks the return of a favorite Ocean City tradition: the annual canoe races at BJ’s on the Water. For over 30 years teams representing local businesses have gathered at this event for an afternoon of relay racing and partying on the bay to raise money for charity. The races may be the focal point, but great food and drink specials make the event equally as fun for competitors and spectators. Get there early to reserve your spot.
