August is officially upon us, but don’t you dare think about going back-to-school shopping yet. Summer is far from over and Ocean City, Maryland has plenty of events and things to do to keep your mind off of next semester for a few more weeks.
This week the ‘White Marlin Capital of the World’ hosts the biggest billfish tournament in the world as anglers from all over head to Ocean City to compete in the internationally famous White Marlin Open. This annual, multi-day, multi-million dollar event starts Monday August 5 and is the largest and most lucrative deep sea fishing tournament in existence. This year, the White Marlin Open celebrates its 40th anniversary and over 300 charter boats are expected to hit the sea in search of white and blue marlin, mako, tuna, and shark as they try to reel in their share of over $2 million in prize money. Fishing takes place all week long with nightly weigh-ins at Harbour Island on 14th St. If you’ve attended the White Marlin weigh-ins before, you know they are as much about partying as they are about scale-tipping fish. This is truly a spectacle you do not want to miss.
If you’re eager to cast your line, you’re in luck. This year, you don’t need to wait until Monday for the fishing to start- if you’re a lady that is. The Ocean City Marlin Club hosts its 5th Annual “Heels and Reels” ladies fishing tournament August 2-3. Nightly weigh-ins will take place at Sunset Marina from 5-7:30 and the awards banquet will be on August 3 after fishing is finished. This is a great chance for all you lady anglers to show you can hold your own with the big boys, or to tune-up before setting sail in the White Marlin Open on Monday.
If searching for fish on the high seas isn’t your thing, maybe searching Dewey Beach with a checklist of fun is. Saturday August 3 is the 3rd Annual Dewey Beach Scavenger Hunt/Bar Crawl. Lindy Promos and Miller Lite are teaming up for this team event that will take participants to a dozen Dewey bars in search of photos, trivia answers, random items, and scavenger hunt glory. Registration and the pre-party start at the Starboard at noon and hunters will return to the Starboard for the post-party/award ceremony after their journey around Dewey concludes.
