Ocean City

This week in OC: September 5-11, 2014

With Labor Day behind us and football season officially underway, Ocean City, Md is gearing up for what many refer to as the “second season.” A multitude of festivals are on the way, many businesses are still in full swing, and there are less crowds to share the beach with, so there may be no better time to be in OC than right now.

Here’s a look at this week’s highlights:

– The Ocean City area is one of the fastest growing craft beer hotbeds on the East Coast, and this Saturday, September 6, the Fin City Brewing Co. is hosting its 6th annual Brews on Beach craft beer festival at Hooper’s Crab House in West OC. Stop by from noon-6 for tastings from Burley Oak, Evolution, Backshore Brewing Co, Lazy Lizard, OC Brewing Co. and more! In addition to the chance to sample many unique, locally brewed beers there will also be live music and an array of food options.

– The Wallop’s Island Flight Facility down the road on the Eastern Shore of Virginia is one of only 4 locations in the US where NASA conducts major rocket launches and space research. This fall, the Ocean Pines Community Center will sponsor monthly bus trips to Wallop’s, which give you the chance to check out the facilities NASA uses to resupply the International Space Station, conduct atmospheric research, develop new technologies, and more. The trips, planned for September, October, November, and December are planned to depart at 9am and return at 4pm and cost is $25. Reservations can be made at 410-641-7052 or by stopping in the Ocean Pines Recreation Department. Visit wallopsisland.org for more information about the facilities and programs.

– If you’re wishing to take an historic look at Ocean City’s iconic past, picking up a copy of the brand new book, “Vanishing Ocean City” by resident Bunk Mann, which documents the history of Ocean City from its beginning in the 1870s to the present day and contains more than 500 stunning photo images. If you wish to meet the man behind the book, head to the official Vanishing Ocean City book signing this Tuesday at the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum. Author Hunter “Bunk” Mann will be on hand. For more info about the book signing, call 410-289-4991 or visit www.ocmuseum.org.
