This week in OC: July 25-31, 2014

El Galeon returns to Ocean City August 1- September 1

With a couple little things like the month-long Tall Ship Event and the multimillion dollar White Marlin Open lurking on the horizon, it’s easy to get caught looking ahead to August. Before you start thinking of boarding El Galeon or reeling in a prize winning Wahoo, however, let’s take a look at some of the things happening around town during the last week of July.

– If you can’t wait for the White Marlin Open, the Talbot Street Pier welcomes the Big Fish Classic this weekend. This 32 hour offshore tournament gives participants the chance to fish Saturday and Sunday, or stay on the sea for an overnight trip as they attempt to reel in the largest marlin, tuna, swordfish, shark or other big game fish. With over $20,000 in guaranteed money on the line, anglers from throughout the mid-Atlantic are eager for their chance to show of their skills and take home the top prize. If you won’t be setting sail, the nightly weigh-ins (4-9pm on Satudsay and 4-8pm on Sunday) give you the chance to experience the thrill of the competition for yourself. Visit bigfishclassic.com for full event details.

– All summer, the men and women of the Ocean City Beach Patrol work tirelessly to keep our beaches and ocean safe. This Saturday, the Beach Patrol will gather on the beach at N. Division St. at 6:30pm for the annual “Crew Comps.” Come cheer on the members of the beach patrol who protect your beach as they compete for ultimate bragging rights in events such as the land line, paddle relay, run-swim-run relay, 400 M sprint relay, and tug-of-war.

– Earlier this month, NASA succesfully launched an Antares rocket that docked at the International Space Station. Next week, you can visit the Wallop’s Island Flight Facility, located just down the road on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, to get a first-hand tour of one of only 4 locations in the US that conducts major rocket launches. The tour, hosted by the Ocean Pines Parks and Rec Department, costs just $25 and lets you check out the visitor’s center and other facilities where NASA conducts rocket launches, balloon projects, and other advanced research. Visit www.wallopsisland.org for more information on the flight facility. Call  410-641-7052 for more information about the trip or to reserve your ticket.

– Finally, don’t forget to take advantage of the town’s free family events while they are still being offered! This week you can catch a free movie on the 27th St. beach on Friday at 8:30, OC Beach Lights on the Boardwalk on Sunday starting at 9:30, Beach Fireworks on the beach at N. Division St. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10pm, Family Beach Olympics on Tuesday at the 27th St. beach from 6:30-8:30, and a free concert on the N. Division St. beach on Wednesday at 8pm.

Anthony started as a freelancer before being hired as OceanCity.com’s Senior Writer and Content Editor. He received his B.A. and Master’s education in American and local history at Salisbury University, where he was a National Honor Society member and intramural softball champion. Prior to working at OceanCity.com, he held nearly every position in the restaurant industry and ran a personal webpage/satire blog. When he’s not hunched over his laptop writing about all things Ocean City, or doing hands on research at bars and events, he spends his time exploring the Shore’s best craft beer breweries, watching the Ravens and Orioles, cooking gourmet meals, attempting (unsuccessfully) to improve his golf game, and daydreaming about his favorite holiday, Punkin Chunkin.
