The firemen have returned to duty, the Junebugs are starting to return to their parent’s houses, and a 10 feet wide, 650 pound frying pan is on its way the shore as Ocean City, Maryland gets set to spring into summer. As June slowly gives way to July, OCMD is offering up another exciting week full of events, activities, and entertainment to get your 2013 summer season off to a sensational start. Here are the highlights for the upcoming week:
For the third straight summer the world’s most extreme athletes embark on Ocean City to lay it all on the line for prizes and, more importantly, pride, at the Dew Tour. Join Bucky Lasek, PLG, Bob Burnquist, and all your favorite action sport athletes as they try to surf, skate, and bike their way to the top of the podium at Dew Tour Beach Championships. After watching the athletes defy gravity, Mother Nature, and common sense at the inlet and on the beach, stick around for nightly live music performances by national acts, including Krewella, New Politics, and Talib Kweli. Be sure to follow these links to for the competition schedule, participants, and concert schedule, and check out our Dew Tour page for comprehensive information and photos.
Just a mere 30 minute drive from Ocean City, Snow Hill, Maryland hosts the 64th Annual Delmarva Chicken Festival June 21-22. This yearly celebration of all things chicken combines delicious food with a county fair atmosphere to create a can’t miss occasion for all ages. Visitors can enjoy free admission, carnival games, live music, and insane amounts of mouth-watering poultry. The festival serves such an enormous amount of chicken that only original world’s largest frying pan can contain it all. As if 800 chicken quarters cooking simultaneously isn’t enough, numerous vendors offer an eclectic variety of poultry preparations and other staple fair foods. For complete details on the event please visit www.dpichicken.org
If chicken doesn’t wet your appetite and you’re craving something a little beefier, you’re in luck. This weekend marks the opening of The Abbey Burger on 126th Street. After years of success in Federal Hill, this Baltimore Burger institution is bringing it’s quality ingredients and upscale approach to the beach, crafting unforgettable patties that were recently named Maryland’s best by USA Today.
The adrenaline from the Dew Tour should subside and your chicken (or burger) binge should digest by early next week, just in time for the ribbon cutting ceremony at OC Steamers on June 26 at 5pm. There are dozens of places to find crabs and fresh seafood all around Ocean City, but OC Steamers is the only to offer the best view of the bay in town.
If you’re looking for free things to do throughout the week, don’t forget about Beach Lights on Sundays, Beach Fireworks on Tuesdays, and Beach Movies on Wednesdays.
