Even though our tummies are still packed with Thanksgiving turkey and all the trimmings, the inevitable inexorable march towards the Christmas events and New Years has begun. The holiday traditions have begun anew and the transformation of the towns on the Eastern Shore into bulwarks of the holiday spirit is complete.
Winterfest began last week with a rain-soaked debut but the show trudged on and made a good show of it. Plenty of people were on hand to take the tram ride and see the sights as soon as possible. Those sights are still there and available for all to enjoy. The tram rides occur nightly now through January and the Yukon Cornelius gift shop is open for business distributing buckets and buckets of hot chocolate to warm the bones of visitors who might catch a chill.
But that’s been going on for a while now and will continue for a while to come. We like to focus on new events and experiences as much as possible, not that the oldies aren’t goodies but we already talked about them at length and those articles are more directed anyway. Not that anything we do could be described as “directed.”
So, beginning in Berlin the town transforms into its annual Victorian Christmas version of itself. The tree lighting happened last week, but the event is in full swing now. The decorations are up and lit, the carriage rides are out in full force and the whole town has got that jingle bell fever. The Berlin shops and galleries are open and waiting and the Berlin restaurants are all ready to serve. Santa will be making the rounds. On Thursday at 7 p.m. the town’s annual Christmas parade is scheduled, and parade fanatics should not miss it.
Actually, for parade fanatics (and who isn’t from time to time) this is a pretty good week. Ocean City’s parade is on Saturday at 11. Scheduled to run from 100th to 115th Street – very close to a number of great Ocean City hotels and convenient motels, the parade will feature high school bands, floats and marching units. Make your hotel reservation and don’t miss a single beat.
It’s clear that it’s never too early to begin preparing for the end of the year. This week marks the kickoff of the events that will last us until 2012 – that push will build the momentum to ramp into spring and before we know it the summer will be here once again.
Until that time it’s the perfect way to relax during these hectic weeks. Berlin fully embraces its Victorian character and molds itself into that image. Ocean City becomes the bastion of leisure it always is, but with enough of a mix of the holiday necessaries to be a little practical about it. You don’t want to throw caution entirely to the wind without some kind of safety net, do you? If you do maybe we can make a few different travel recommendations based upon that need.
Once we get those messages we’ll head down that road. For now we’ll go ahead and focus on Ocean City and the surrounding areas thank you very much. There are always plenty of things to do and we’re always happy to share.
