It is with great sadness we inform you that past County Commissioner Louise L. Gulyas (Ocean City District, 1998 – 2014) passed away this morning, Thursday, December 17, 2015. Gulyas was elected as a County Commissioner to represent the Ocean City District – District Seven in 1998 and was the second woman ever to be elected as a County Commissioner.
Throughout her time in office, Commissioner Gulyas acted as a strong voice for senior citizens and the disabled. She served the Board of County Commissioners as vice president for three years and president for one year. At the local level, Commissioner Gulyas represented the County Commissioners on the Worcester County Commission on Aging Board of Directors and the Wor-Wic Community College Board of Trustees. Regionally, she served as a member of the Gray Shore Committee Task Force and former chair of the Tri-County Council Health Care Committee and MAC, Inc (Maintaining Active Citizens).
Commissioner Gulyas also chaired the State Commission on Aging where she received the Governor’s Leadership in Aging Award for her advocacy efforts and support of senior citizens. At the federal level, she was appointed as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging. Commissioner Gulyas served four consecutive terms in office. In 2015, she was named to the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
