Scientists say they’ve discovered the cause of the oyster apocalypse in the Northern Chesapeake

It wasn’t the heavy rains of Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee that are to blame for the death of most of the northern Chesapeake Bay’s oysters but the heavy rainfalls in the spring and early summer.

 

Oyster beds sampled by the DNR found between 74 and 79 percent dead oysters with the remaining shellfish well on their way to upping that percentage.
