Raffle to benefit county humane society

(Dec. 14, 2012) Saturday is the last day to buy raffle tickets for a chance at winning a share of $5,000, all for a worthwhile cause — helping care for animals at the Worcester County Humane Society.

Humane society volunteers rely on donations to tend to the approximately 40 dogs and more than 100 cats living at the no-kill shelter, located at 12330 Eagles Nest Road, off Route 611 in West Ocean City.

Raffle tickets cost $5 each or $20 for five. First prize is $3,000, second is $1,500 and third is $500. The winning tickets will be drawn during a party, from 4-8 p.m., on Saturday at Harborside Bar & Grill in West Ocean City. Winners need not be present.

Proceeds from the raffle and party will help shelter employees and volunteers care for the cats and dogs.

Tickets can be purchased at the event, where there will also be music by Simple Truth from 2-6 p.m. followed by DJ Billy T, auctions, happy hour drink specials and a small buffet. Admission to get into the party costs $10 and an item from the dog and cat wish list (see sidebar).

“The food bill for the shelter is $700 a week, close to $3,000 a month, and the vet bills are astronomical,” said Judi Galuardi, organizer of the raffle and a shelter volunteer since 2006. “Supplies are great, but our biggest challenge is to place a dog or cat. We really need to just find them a home.”

The Worcester County Humane Society is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The facility is closed Sunday and Wednesday. For more information, call 410-213-0146 or visit the Worcester County Humane Society Facebook page.
