The Ocean City Boardwalk

The Ocean City boardwalk is one of those things that you’ll always remember, keep visiting year-after-year, and look forward to for years to come. The 3-mile boarded walkway is one of Ocean City’s main attractions, probably only second to our beaches.

The Ocean City boardwalk was built in 1902. Originally known as Atlantic Avenue, the OC boardwalk has transformed quite a bit since then. The boardwalk began as a simple way to connect hotel entrances together so their visitors wouldn’t get sand in their shoes as they walked from hotel to hotel.

The boardwalk runs south to north from the inlet to 27th Street. The boardwalk is a great way to see the southern part of Ocean City. Feel free to walk, peddle, ride on, or run the OC boardwalk throughout the year! There are several bicycle rental businesses located on or just off of the boards where you can rent a bike and take it for a spin on the wooden walk. There are convenient mile-markers on the boardwalk street signs if you’d prefer to walk, run, or jog on the boards instead. For a small fee, you can even hop on the train-styled tram car that slowly travels along the boardwalk in the summer months.

The Boardwalk shops are the perfect place to pick up your Ocean City souvenirs. Some stores on the boardwalk have been there for decades while others change almost seasonally. You’ll find staples and lots of souvenirs to take back from your vacation.

You can’t go to the Ocean City boardwalk without stopping to get something to eat. Indulge in a treat from one of the many dining, snack, or candy eateries along the boardwalk. You’ll find Eastern Shore delicacies like fried chicken, pit beef, traditional hamburgers, and so many other options. Treat yourself to dessert at any of the many candy stores and your sweet tooth will be satisfied.

If you’re seeking a thrill, try the boardwalk’s amusements or arcades! The antique carousel from 1902, located at the head of the boardwalk, is a must-see. There are roller coasters, amusement rides, carnival games, and street vendors to check out, too. During the mid-summer months you can set up your beach chairs or blankets on the beach at North Division Street and enjoy live concerts for free on Wednesday evenings.

There are hotels, motels, condos, bed & breakfasts, and apartments lining the boardwalk. The many accommodation establishments that overlook the boardwalk are perfect if you’re looking for the ultimate convince in Ocean City. With so many accommodation options, you’re sure to find exactly what you’re looking for.

The boardwalk is one of Ocean City, Maryland’s most popular attractions and acts as a giant welcoming sign to our beautiful beach. We hope to see you on the boards this summer season in Ocean City!

  1. You forgot to mention the wonderful Life Saving Museum at the very beginning of the Boardwalk. It’s filled with the history of Ocean City from it’s early beginnings to present day and tons of fun and interesting artifacts from dishes to the hilarious swim suits on the second floor. It’s a never miss for me and I always discover something new.
