As we turn the calendar to August (already?), now may be the best time all year to visit Ocean City, MD. If you want your vacation to include clear skies and mild temperatures, free town events, and the World’s Largest Billfish Tournament, Ocean City is the place for you this week.
Here are the highlights of this week’s events, activities, and other things to do:
– Since its inception 42 years ago, Ocean City’s White Marlin Open has grown in to the largest, most lucrative billfish tournament on the planet. Next week (August 3-7), Anglers from all over the world will be in Ocean City for their chance to land a prize winning fish worth millions of dollars. Last year’s white marlin winner took home over $1.29 million, and the 2015 purse is expected to be even bigger. If you want to follow the action, check out the nightly weigh-ins/party from 4:30-7pm at Harbour Island on 14th St. (catch the shuttle at the Convention Center to beat the downtown parking). You can also watch the live feed and find other event information at http://www.whitemarlinopen.com/marlincam/.
– If you’re looking for something to keep you busy while waiting on the White Marlin Open, check out the annual Peach Festival on Saturday just down the road in ‘America’s Coolest Small Town,’ Berlin. Now in its 7th year, the Peach Festival runs from 11am-4pm and includes great local peach foods, a pie eating contest, entertainment, basket making/quilting/knitting demos, and much more. Visit www.berlinmainstreet.com/events/peach-festival/ for more details.
– Also on Saturday, August 1, is Jolly Rodger Day at Ocean City’s iconic theme park. For just $30 you get unlimited access to Splash Mountain and all the mini golf you can handle, as well as a couple roller coaster and amusement rides. Jolly Roger Day lasts from 10am-6pm and tickets will be sold through noon on the day of the event.
– Finally, don’t forget to maximize your vacation with free nightly events hosted by the town. This week, create your own sudae at Northside Park from 7-9pm with Sundaes in the Park; check out a spectacular laser lights show aling the Boardwalk with OC Beach Lights shows at 9:30, 10, 10:30p; enjoy beach fireworks on Monday and Tuesday on the beach at N. Division St; listen to the sweet sounds of Bluesman Tom Larsen at Wednesday’s Concert on the Beach on the Caroline Street Stage; and rock out with Sunset Park Party Nights on Thursday from 7-9pm.
