Movies on the Beach: The Avengers

There have been plenty of movies about the beach – from the silliness of the late Annette Funicello’s mad-cap surf parties to the grim shores of Normandy. And several movies have been made along the sand in Ocean City, first among them the 1986 Sissy Spacek and Kevin Kline film, “Violets Are Blue.”

The Carousel Resort Hotel & Condominiums

The Carousel Resort Hotel at 118 doubles the thrill of ocean and cinema on Wednesday evenings this summer with free “Movies on the Beach” and there are a few flicks left to see as the 2013 season comes to an end.

How do they do it?

In Baltimore’s Little Italy, films are projected on the side of a building and the crowd sits on lawn chairs and blankets on a parking lot. On the beach alongside the Carousel, which provides free parking for the movies, they use a big, inflatable screen.

“I’ve seen 150 people or more out there,” said Christopher M. David, 28, the hotel’s marketing manager. “It’s a big screen, similar in size to something you’d see inside a [multi-plex] movie theater. They bring their beach chairs and we give them glow sticks and they can come into our bistro for popcorn.”

Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow

This Wednesday – August 21, 2013 – the Carousel will be showing “The Avengers,” the 2012 Marvel Comics flick starring Robert Downey Jr. in his Iron Man role, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Scarlett Johansson in a role Annette Funicello didn’t quite have the bikini for: the Black Widow.

“We get a great mix of folks,” said David, who graduated from West Chester University in Pennsylvania with a degree in graphic design, grew up vacationing in Ocean City with his family and has lived at the beach since 2009. “A lot of the people going to the movies stay at the hotel but a lot of others come from all over.”

The final movie on this year’s Carousel schedule will be the 2012 DreamWorks animation film “Rise of the Guardians,” on Wednesday evening, August 28, right before the Labor Day weekend. The films begin at 8:30 p.m.
