Mione’s Italian Restaurant in West Ocean City

If you are in Ocean City this week, you may notice a couple of changes as you drive down Coastal Highway. The speed limit, normally 40 mph through North Ocean City, has been reduced to 30 mph, and Downtown, the speed limit has also been reduced. This is due to the expected, unauthorized H2Oi Pop-Up Rally.  It is reasonable to expect heavier than usual traffic, noise and strict enforcement of vehicle laws during the week and weekend.

Would you go to an Italian restaurant that is relatively low-priced, very casual, and is ranked with 4 out of 5 stars by Yelp and 4.5 out of 5 by Trip Advisor?  On Trip Advisor, it even ranks as the 9th best restaurant in all of Ocean City.  You bet I would and I do, frequently!

Mione’s does not have a great view, but it serves the best eggplant parmesean in Ocean City.  It also serves fabulous shells, pizza, calzones and every other kind of basic Italian dish.  It is located in White Marlin Mall on the north side of Route 50 (left as you approach the bridge into Ocean City.)  This is a local’s favorite and has become a favorite of those who are frequent visitors to our town.

Don’t expect anything fancy.  You’ll pull up to the restaurant which is in one of the islands of shops/restaurants in the parking lot of the White Marlin Mall.  Petsmart is behind it.  You’ll see a couple of  green metal tables outside which are relatively new additions and perfect when the weather is gorgeous as it frequently is here in Ocean City.  When you walk into the restaurant itself, you’ll be greeted by a bunch of large, round, ORANGE tables and booths along the wall.  When I say orange, I mean ORANGE.  Just beyond the seating area are the glass cases where you can see the pizza and calzone options for the day.  Behind the cases, you will see an array of people bustling to make and deliver your food.  The owners are almost always there, greeting you with a smile and frequently remembering your name.  You’ll see the cooks spinning the pizza dough in the air, creating the perfect pizza, or sliding the completed pies into the oven.  You can’t miss on any of their creations.

I love their Greek Salad pizza.  It seems odd, but it is definitely worth trying if you like salad and you like pizza.  My son gets the ham and cheese calzone.  It’s huge and is big enough for 2 adolescent boys.  Make sure you order some sauce with your choice as it is very flavorful and complements anything from calzones to garlic bread sticks.  If you choose the latter, be prepared for the sweet and pungent taste of real garlic.  You might want to avoid these if you have a meeting or a date, otherwise, indulge!  They are fabulous.

My all time favorite and one that creates cravings is Mione’s eggplant parmesean dinner.  For approximately $12 you get a good sized salad with a dressing of your choice, a small loaf of Italian bread, a full-sized plate of spaghetti with their famous and scruptious sauce, AND a large dish of the best eggplant parmesean I’ve had in a REALLY long time.  The slices are thick, perfectly cooked, and they taste like eggplant.  If you don’t like eggplant, then go for one of the many other options, but if you do, choose a friend and share this unbelievable meal — and deal.  There is too much food, even for two people unless you are starving.  My co-worker was craving this dish after I introduced her to it a couple of weeks ago.  I’m always up for Mione’s so we split the meal and ended up coming home with all of the spaghetti and all of the loaf of Italian bread since we splurged on the garlic bread sticks instead.  Now, my son has a full dinner. Feeding three for $12 isn’t bad!

Drink options are typical, but don’t expect refills.  Mione’s actually charges to have your soda refilled.  It’s only $.50, but it’s the principle of the thing that irks me.  They have a variety of bottled drinks as well.  They even have beer and wine available.  Nothing special, but perfectly drinkable and well matched to the ambiance.

Mione’s in Ocean City is well worth the trip.  Stop on your way into Ocean City or on your way home.  It will fill you up with wonderful food and add to your great memories that will bring you back to Ocean City again and again.
