“Live an Active Lifestlye” at Beachfest

The kickoff for the first annual Beachfest will take place the weekend of June 19th through June 21st. The events will take place at three locations: the beach on 37th Street at the Castle in the Sand Hotel, the Ocean Bowl Skate Park, and the headquarters will be at the Convention Center. The festivities are a good way for both youth and families to get active with the featured events that include surfing, skateboarding, bodyboarding, action sports, and more.
Participants of the event receive a Beachfest landyard with an event pass to access the village (the Convention Center). Those participants that signed up before May 10th will be given a free t-shirt as well. Most of the events require an entry fee and all competitions include prizes for the winners.
The Castle in the Sand Hotel on 37th Street will host the Reef/K-Coast Open Surfing Pro-Am and the Bodyboarding Beachfest Pro-Am. Pro surfers and bodyboarders must be on call from Friday June 19th through Sunday June 21st. There is a $500 cash award in addition to other prizes for winners of both competitions. Also taking place at the Castle in the Sand are the Paddleboat races. This event is Saturday June 20th from 6pm to 8pm and prizes will be awarded to winners of each division.
The Skateboarding Beachfest Pro-Am contest will be held on Saturday June 20th at the Ocean Bowl on 3rd Street. The winner will receive a $750 cash prize. The first round of the “Game of Skate” contest will be Saturday at the Convention Center and the finals will take place on Sunday at the Convention Center. Winners of this event will be awarded a $250 cash prize.
There will be a 5 mile run on Saturday, June 20th that begins at 7am at the Inlet and ends at 27th street. A sprint triathlon will take place on Sunday at 7:30 am on Assateague Island. This particular event is highly anticipated because of its full capacity at 400 runners. Runners are of all ages and are traveling from as far as Colorado to participate in the event.
According to the Co-Producer of the event, Meredith Hennen, most of the hype will be at the Convention Center. The Convention Center, also known as the Beachfest village, will host a BMX stunt show, the Mid-Atlantic Indo Board Challenge, the Game of Skate Competition, and the Battle of the Bands Competition. Also, there will be a surf display of classic surf woodies, surf rods, surf wagons, surf vans, and beach cruisers.
This is a great way for those people who want to come to Ocean City to experience an active lifestyle. Meredith Hennen says, “We are expecting a big turnout with participants and an even bigger turnout for spectators.” She says, “We’re really excited about this premiere event and we hope it will grow in the future.”
