Lady Seahawks beat Warriors first time since ’04

(Jan. 25, 2013) The Stephen Decatur girls’ basketball team’s 58-47 victory over the Mardela Warriors last Thursday was a significant achievement — the Lady Seahawks haven’t taken down the Warriors since 2004.

“It was a huge win for our season, for the team and for the program,” said Decatur Coach Amy Fenzel-Mergott.

The Seahawks led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 27-23 at the halftime break.

Decatur outscored Mardela 16-7 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 43-30.

The Warriors tallied 17 points in the fourth quarter, while the Seahawk netted 15.

“We played very good defense. [Sophomore] Ali Beck and [freshman] Hannah FauntLeRoy held their No. 1 player [ShaKema Dashiell] to half” of the points she typically scores, Fenzel-Mergott said. “Our offense did a good job scoring.”

Senior co-captain Abbey Schorr scored 17 points for Decatur. Freshman Dayona Godwin logged 16 points; she hit four three-pointers. Junior Erin Florek chipped in with 11 points.

On Tuesday, the Decatur squad traveled to Salisbury to battle the Wi-Hi Indians. Although it wasn’t their best performance, but the Seahawks came away with a 60-35 victory.

“We won, but it wasn’t pretty,” Fenzel-Mergott said. “They’re always physical and we had a hard time adjusting to that. And our offense didn’t get into a flow.”

The Seahawks scored 17 points in the first quarter, while the Indians netted nine. By halftime, Decatur had built a 32-22 lead, and increased its advantage 44-28 by the end of the third quarter.

“They got within 10 points and we kept our composure,” Fenzel-Mergott said. “Our press forced Wi-Hi turnovers and we scored some baskets off of them, but we didn’t capitalize on 100 percent of them.”

Schorr contributed 19 points and had eight rebounds. Godwin tallied 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Seahawks are scheduled to visit Pocomoke on Tuesday to battle the Warriors.
