(Jan. 25, 2013) The Stephen Decatur indoor track teams finished first among the Bayside Conference squads, following only behind Delaware schools in the standings during the Jan. 16 meet at the Worcester County Recreation Center in Snow Hill. Nineteen teams participated in the competition.

The Lady Seahawks earned second-place honors with 72 points. Sussex Tech of Delaware won the girls’ meet with 98 points.

“I was really happy with the girls. They were eighth the week before and they got second this week, so that’s definitely an improvement,” Decatur Coach Jody Stigler said following the meet. “We looked really good.”

Senior Ameerah Lewis won the shot put event, with a throw of 30 feet 5 inches. Junior Katie Collins scored a victory in pole vault competition (7 feet), and Layla Fowler, also a junior, took top honors in the 500-meter race (1:24.08).

Fowler, junior Chloe FauntLeRoy and sophomores Lauren Bodolus and Jenna Leitgeb completed the 1,600-meter relay race in 4:38, good for first place.

The Decatur boys’ team scored 69 points to finish in third place, just two points behind Caesar Rodney of Delaware (71). Milford, also of Delaware, won the meet with 77 points.

“We had a few injuries. I think we would have won if we were at 100 percent,” Stigler said. “Overall, I was pleased. Kent Island was next with 34 points and we had 69.”

Senior Kyle Kelly out-ran his competition in the 300-meter event; he crossed the finish line in 37.29 seconds.

Kelly, sophomore Jackson Mumford and seniors Sunny Aroh and Daniel Winters competed in the 1,600-meter relay event. They won the race in 3:44.8.

Senior James Mapp, junior Tayevon Mills and sophomore Jakhai Woodard joined Kelly for the 800-meter relay event. The boys were victorious, running the race in 1:36.36.

Senior Patrick Phillips threw the shot put 46 feet 1 inch to earn top honors in the event.

Decatur athletes are scheduled to compete in the 3A East Regional meet Feb. 5, at the Baltimore Armory.
