Children’s story follows main character Jill as she searches for stolen sandal
(July 12, 2013) A new children’s mystery book is available for young Ocean City visitors and it is the 10th story from author Denise Blum who called it a “souvenir” of the vacation destination.
“My hope is that parents, instead of buying a T-shirt or snow globe, they’ll buy the books and kids can learn about the area,” said the mom of two young children.
The “Flip Flop Fiasco” is an interactive children’s story about Jill’s fun day at the beach until a seagull swoops down and steals her flip flop. Jill searches through the town for the lost shoe and readers are encouraged to help crack the case by watching for hidden clues on the pages.
“I like to write mysteries and love to keep the readers engaged so I plant a clue somewhere in the story to keep the readers interested,” Blum said.
The Cecil County, Md, resident said she spent the last three years writing her 10 books and her next story will be released within a few months. She is keeping busy and hopes to continue writing children’s book, which she said are her favorite stories.
“I have children and my favorite part of the day was in bed snuggling up and reading books to them,” Blum said. “And then I realized that I could do as well as them if not a better job of writing children’s books.”
Blum began a career in marketing and after spending time with her son and daughter, now 12 and 9 years old, she realized her love for writing could take a different direction. She said writing for the marketing field wasn’t as much fun as writing children’s books.
Each story is set in a vacation spot. Blum’s previous settings include various Delaware beaches and Virginia Beach and her next story will take place in Philadelphia.
Before each book is sent to the publisher, Mainstay Publishing, Blum said her children help edit the stories.
“They’re probably my harshest critics,” she said. “But as long as they laugh in the right places, they’re good editors. They’re a great focus group for me.”
The Flip Flop Fiasco released July 3 and Blum said the book has been “well received.” It can be purchased at A Perfect Face Day Spa in West Ocean City, Funcade on Ninth Street and the Boardwalk and three Wockenfuss Canides locations (First Street and the Boardwalk, Seventh Street and the Boardwalk and in the White Marlin Mall in West Ocean City). The cost is $10.
