A Fit Day for the Beach

If you are in Ocean City this week, you may notice a couple of changes as you drive down Coastal Highway. The speed limit, normally 40 mph through North Ocean City, has been reduced to 30 mph, and Downtown, the speed limit has also been reduced. This is due to the expected, unauthorized H2Oi Pop-Up Rally.  It is reasonable to expect heavier than usual traffic, noise and strict enforcement of vehicle laws during the week and weekend.

Healthy eaters have no fear; fast food, sub shops and all-you-can-eat buffets are not the only food options offered in Ocean City, Maryland.  While it may seem like sticking to a healthy eating plan during your beach vacation is impossible, it’s a simple task as long as you know where to look.  Various restaurants in Ocean City have put together healthy and tasty meals for the summer season.

One of these restaurants is OC- Wasabi on 33rd Street, which offers an extensive sushi bar as well as other authentic Japanese cuisines.  Some of these dishes include teriyaki style steaks, seafood, beef, and chicken.  Even if sushi is not your thing, all dinner entrees are delicious, health conscious, and come with rice and a house salad or miso soup- plenty to keep you full for other beach activities.  Trying to watch your budget as well as your diet? OC Wasabi also offers coupons on their website for discounts on your total meal purchases!

If you’re not a fan of Japanese cuisine,  another restaurant in Ocean City that provides a section for dining guests as well as a pick-up counter for those hitting the beach is The Toucan on 35th Street.  Located in the K-Coast Surf Shop, the Toucan’s saying, “A Taste of the Tropics,” is truly brought to life through the variety of menu items offered breakfast through dinner daily.

Nearly every meal on The Toucan’s menu comes with the option of adding chicken, shrimp, steak, tuna, or Mahi Mahi for little additional cost.  Whether you decide to order the tacos, a rice bowl, salad, or Casados, a Costa Rican dinner platter, feel free to spice up your meal with these additional proteins options.  The Toucan also blends fresh smoothies with your choice of pineapple, mango, strawberry, banana, or kiwi.   It’s the perfect restaurant to get Caribbean style food that’s good for you and tastes delicious as well.

Located on 118th Street on Ocean City bayside is Brianna’s Bananas Café, a fun spot where your food is made in front of you to ensure your knowledge that all ingredients are fresh with no extra preservatives added.  With plenty of indoor and outdoor, bay-front seating, Brianna’s provides a variety of salads, wraps, Panini’s, soft serve yogurt, smoothies, and shakes for guests.   One of their most popular menu items, the Belgian Waffle is a perfect way to start your day.  This 7 inch waffle comes with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese all grilled sandwich style on a Panini press.  If bacon, egg, and cheese are not your thing, you can also request to have nearly anything on your waffle; including fruit, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and more.

Brianna’s smoothies are made with real fruit and Lactaid free milk with no additional sugars or syrups added.  Some of their smoothies even include whey or soy protein and electrolytes to add an extra, healthy boost to your day. Owners of Brianna’s Banana’s Cafe, Tony and Cindy DiNicolas also keep soy milk on hand as well as special wraps for people with certain allergens including those to glutens, peanuts, or dairy products.  Having a son with food allergies himself, they’re happy to meet any customers’ special needs.

The DiNicolas’ having always sought healthy places to eat themselves, Tony and Cindy stress their target for Brianna’s Banana’s is to be “fun and good for you at the same time.” They feel Brianna’s is a good alternative in Ocean City because people get to choose their own, fresh ingredients and all sandwiches and wraps are made to order.  Even the tuna salad is made to order with all the ingredients you desire such as mayonnaise, Old Bay, celery, etcetera.   Brianna’s Banana’s is a ‘Mom and Pop’ shop with plenty of delicious, healthy foods to last you your entire beach vacation!

Another restaurant that offers a variety of heart healthy dishes is Fat Daddy’s located in Midtown OC on 82nd Street and Coastal highway, as well as on the corner of Dorcester and Baltimore Ave, in Downtown OC.  And don’t be thrown off by the name Fat Daddy’s, this restaurant labels all healthy dishes on their menu with a red heart and offers delivery, dine-in, and carryout services to customers.  Some of these dishes include sandwiches prepared with veggie burgers, a variety of vegetables, and delicious sauces; an eggplant parmesan sub; as well as a variety of deli sandwiches including grilled tuna, chicken breast, turkey, egg salad, chicken salad and tuna salad.

With so many options, it’s hard not to stick to your healthy eating plan while vacationing in Ocean City, MD.  For more information on healthy eating options, check out blog updates at oceancity.com!
