Fishing and Boating in Ocean City, MD

The natural, shipwreck and artificial reefs off the coast of Maryland provide some of the best fishing throughout the world. If you are a keen fisherman and choose to bring your own boat, there are public boat ramps throughout the area to put in and head out into the serene waters of Worcester County. Rod rentals are also available at two pier locations and local marinas also offer boat rentals to enjoy a great day of bay fishing too.

Sea Bass, one of the tastiest fish in the sea, are the main spectacle on these fishing trips. Other species such as tautog, triggerfish, and bluefish are also caught on occasion in the lovely reefs. Boston mackerel can be plentiful in the spring, especially after a cold winter, as well as tautog. As the waters warm, sea bass become more copious. As fall approaches, look for a selection of sea trout, blue marlin, white marlin, blue fin, yellow fin and big eye tuna, wahoo, dolphin and a variety of big sharks including tiger, mako, and thresher await you in our offshore waters.

The inshore waters flourish with bluefish, sea bass and tautog, while our bays offer a variety of rockfish, flounder and trout. You can also experience great fishing from any of the public fishing piers throughout the area if you do not feel like cruising the waves in a boat. And don’t forget the adventurous surf fishing from our beautiful beaches, either in Ocean City or in Assateague Island.

Although Ocean City is known for the White Marlin Open, the largest billfish tournament in the world, there are many fishing tournaments held each year for anglers of all ages and skill levels. The local bait and tackle shops offer an impressive variety of live and frozen bait, along with any fishing gear you might need.

No matter what your enjoyment in the sport of fishing happens to be, you will find it here. Whether it’s the exhilaration of fighting a big shark at sea, or a relaxing day on the bay and backwaters waiting for a bite, you will no doubt go home with an incredibly enjoyable memory.
