“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a celebration of survivorship, an occasion to express hope and our shared determination to make this breast cancer’s last century.”
So reads the official website of the Ocean City area chapter of MSABC, whose membership extends as far west as Salisbury, as far south as Pocomoke, and as far north as the Delaware line. Each year, MSABC hosts numerous events in Ocean City to raise awareness about breast cancer, and raise money to further research by the American Cancer Society on how to eradicate it.
Yesim Karaman, of the award-winning Golden Plate, has spent the last several years donating her time to help MSABC’s mission. As a volunteer for the annual Boardwalk 5K, Jammin’ Out Cancer at Seacrets, and other functions, Yesim helped set up and break down equipment, oversaw merchandise, managed food and beverage items, and, most importantly, interacted with countless breast cancer survivors. Regardless of their personal stories of overcoming the odds, Yesim noticed common themes of courageous attitudes, witty senses of humor, and uplifting perspectives on life united many of the survivors she had the pleasure of meeting.
Although assisting the MSABC committee was a great experience for Yesim, she desired to take an even more active role to help the group get closer to its goals. Historically, Making Strides functions have been geared toward older crowds, but, drawing inspiration from the success of Burley Oak’s guest bartending charity nights, Yesim set out to create events that appeal to a younger demographic. She reached out to long-term friend Mike Lee, who is the General Manager of de Lazy Lizard Brewing Co. and whose mom is a breast cancer survivor, about getting the local breweries involved in her effort. Unsurprisingly, many Ocean City area breweries jumped at the opportunity to join the fight against breast cancer, and the “Brews for Boobs” series was born.
“Brews for Boobs” kicks off September 11 at Backshore Brewing Co. and continues each Thursday through October 30. The weekly events, which will feature raffles, 50/50s, and other activities, will rotate among 8 breweries, with each donating a portion of proceeds directly to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Hosts include Ocean City Brewing Co., Burley Oak, 3rd Wave Brewing Co., Fin City, Assowoman Bay Brewing, de Lazy Lizard, and Tall Tales Brewery.
Yesim and Mike Lee see the fall as the perfect time to launch their new charity series. Not only does it coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, but, with tourist season winding down in Ocean City, local residents, who are known for their charitable ways and for rallying around great causes, have much more free time on their hands to get involved. Yesim and Mike hope “Brews for Boobs” provides fun fundraisers that will help ease the transition from the excitement of summer to the downtime of the off-season. Their short-term goal is to host exciting events that encourage people to return each week, but the ultimate goal is to establish an annual series that expands each year.
With the support of MSABC, area breweries, and Ocean City residents, Brews for Boobs is well on its way to having a positive impact on the local community and the greater fight against breast cancer.
