Senior setter Ashley Trice was named to the All-Conference First Team.

“Ashley was our most consistent player. She had the leadership qualities we were looking for at the beginning of the season,” said Decatur Coach Sarah Zimmer.

Teammates named Trice “team mom” this year because she said “everyone feels comfortable coming to me if they need anything.”

Zimmer said Trice was a standout offensively and defensively.

Senior Casey Ortiz also received First Team accolades.

“Casey played all around [every position] every minute of the game. She was able to make some plays a lot of us didn’t think could happen,” Zimmer said. “She got us out of a bind quite a few times.”

“She was able to prove herself this year,” Zimmer said.

Katie VanBruggen, a junior, was awarded Second Team honors. Zimmer said VanBruggen stepped up this year at her new position.

“She was a right-side hitter last year and this year we moved her to the left side,” Zimmer said. “She accepted [the position] and worked hard at improving her game.”

Honorable Mention distinction went to defensive specialist Alexis Martinek and Bianca Alvarado, both seniors, junior Kiley Cooke and sophomore Hannah Adkins.

Zimmer said Alvarado took on a leadership role this season. Martinek also led the Lady Seahawks, using her experienced to assist teammates in the back row.

This was Adkins first season playing at the varsity level and Zimmer said she improved and gained confidence. Cooke also made her varsity debut this year and Zimmer said she will be a strong force at the middle hitter position as her confidence grows.

The Seahawks finished the season 10-7. Zimmer took over as head coach for Bertha Ortiz, who was at the helm for 12 seasons. Ortiz passed away in July at the age of 47 after a long battle with cancer. Zimmer was the junior varsity head coach and a varsity assistant under Ortiz for four seasons.
