Earth Day Clean-Up in Ocean City: April 16, 2011

Earth Day Clean-Up in Ocean City

Join the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, Ocean City’s Surfrider Foundation and the Town of Ocean City as they celebrate Earth Day! Help out on Saturday, April 16th, 2011, and pick up trash in the wetlands and on the sand dunes in Ocean City. A rain date is scheduled for April 17th if necessary.

Form a team! Register your team by calling 410-213-2297 (extension 107) and meet up on Saturday morning, April 16th. We will meet in Ocean City’s Town Hall parking lot between 8:30 am and 9:00 am. Once there you can find your assigned clean-up area, pick up come gloves, trash bags, and a free Earth Day t-shirt. As a team, or individually, you’ll feel great knowing that you’ve helped keep our coastal waterways clean in honor of Earth Day. A team can range from 1 person to 24 people.

April 16-17th, 2011 are known as Global Days of Service. One these select days hundreds of people around the world will be working towards a better tomorrow. This is your chance to gather your friends, family, and organizations to make a difference.

Many areas in Ocean City are in need of cleaning. Keep in mind that this includes our wetlands – and there are lots of them! Be sure to dress appropriately seeing as you’ll most likely be working in shallow waters. Wearing old clothing and rain boots is a good idea while working in marshy areas.  You won’t want to mess up you fancy sneakers or get pricked by sharp marsh grasses, would you? Wear clothes that you will feel warm and protected in while helping out. Feel free to bring tools like shovels, rakes, pitchforks, or similar items that you feel would help the marsh cleaning efforts.

Coastal marshes are a crucial ecosystem in Ocean City. The plants provide food and shelter to many mammals, birds, fish, and invertebrates. The marshes are home to one of the most critical plant communities on the continent. Make sure you watch where you are walking and be cautious while cleaning our delicate ecosystem. Only pick up trash that has not established itself in the marsh. Walk the edge of the wetland and reach in to disturb as little as possible.
