(Feb. 8, 2013) The Stephen Decatur boys’ and girls’ swim teams each earned victories over the Easton Warriors last Thursday at the Pocomoke YMCA.
The Decatur boys’ squad raced to first place in eight of the 11 events and came out on top 108-60.
Seahawks who won their individual events were senior captains Shayne Custodio (100-yard butterfly, 1:00.50; 100 breaststroke, 1:12.20) and Jeff Middleton (100 backstroke, 1:09), junior Jake Middleton (200 freestyle, 1:58.90; 500 freestyle, 5:21.17) and sophomore Chris Poole (50 freestyle, 25.02 seconds).
The Middletons, Custodio and Poole scored a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, completing the race in 1:54.47.
Junior Cory Campbell joined Jake Middleton, Poole and Custodio for the 200-yard freestyle relay, which the boys won in 1:39.88.
“The boys had an excellent meet and swam with great enthusiasm. We had lots of great times and the boys are almost ready for regionals,” said Decatur Coach Damien Sanzotti. “We are beginning to focus on events the boys will be swimming at regionals. The swimming between the walls is looking good, we have to perfect our starts and turns in order to complete our preparation for regionals.”
The Lady Seahawks won 100-69.
Decatur swimmers who logged individual victories were sophomores Molly Wooten (200-yard freestyle, 2:22.70), Maria Zweifel (200 IM, 2:39.05) and Carly Deickman (100 breaststroke, 1:18.62).
Senior captain Julia Wellen, sophomore Madison Tinus, Zweifel and Deickman out-swam their competition in the 200-yard freestyle relay race (1:56.96).
“We won four events, but we had a lot of second-, third- and fourth-place finishers which put us ahead of Easton. We were a little but more well-rounded,” said Coach Jenny Miller. “We were on a three-meet losing streak and we gained some confidence back by winning the meet. The girls got excited for it and they were able to pull out a win. A handful put up best times, which is good to see as we’re going into the end of the season.”
Decatur’s final meet of the regular season is Tuesday against the Kent County Trojans at the Pocomoke YMCA. The Seahawks will then compete in the 3A-2A-1A East Regional meet, set for Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Arundel Swim Center.
