Colleen Rutzler is an Ocean City local. This 42-year-old mother, wife, sister, and beach lover was also diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Along with the support of her 2 daughters, loving husband, supportive family, coworkers, friends, and community, we’re helping Colleen raise awareness for this form of leukemia.
Immediately after being diagnosed with AML, Rutzler started chemotherapy and treatments at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. In need of a bone marrow transplant, and many doses of chemotherapy, Rutzler has been suffering from harsh side effects and complications.
Colleen Rutzler and her family are looking for support. What kind of support? Just a simple swab or a cheek. The family wants everyone to know their bone marrow type so that other diagnosed with leukemia will have positive bone marrow matches. Why not consider saving a life?
You can register to have you inner cheek swabbed on Friday, April 8th, 2011. The event is taking place here in Ocean City at Harrison’s Harbor Watch from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Health professionals will use 4 long Q-Tips to swab your inner cheek and determine your match. You must be between the ages of 18 and 60 years old to participate. Harrison’s Harbor Watch is located at the southern end of the boardwalk overlooking the inlet and Assateague Island.
It costs about $100 to add a person to the “Be the Match Registry”, that is providing the health care professionals for this leukemia-related event. This $100 donation is tax deductible and may guarantee some leukemia patients a second chance at life. If you can’t make it to Colleen Rutzler’s event but feel motivated to help you can donate a check. Please make checks payable to “Be the Match Foundation”, memo line “Colleen” and sent to “Be the Match” care of Juliette Williams, PO Box 854, Columbia, MD 21044.
If you can’t donate, feel free to join the group for lunch at Harrison’s Harbor Watch on April 8th. Please make reservations for parties over 8 persons. All proceeds generated at this event will help add more potential donors to the Be the Match registry.
Bring your family and friends and join us for dinner to help Colleen and her family in this trying time. We hope that you’ll consider making a contribution.
