Those who are interested in what completing the Seagull Century feels like but are unsure if they have the mettle to finish it are encouraged to give Saturday’s Iron Furnace Fifty
“We thought we might do a number of things, and we eventually contacted the Seagull Century
. It was their suggestion we try to organize a race 1 month before as an introduction,” co-chair Larry Knudsen said.
The ride will begin and end at Furnace Town between Snow Hill and Salisbury. The ride officially begins at 7 a.m. but as this is a fun ride, people can start later if they wish.
“It may take 4-5 hours at a leisurely pace and making all three stops along the course,” Knudsen said.
Participants will receive a number of gifts with the entrance fee of $60 for adults and $50 for students.
“For families,” the race will have a sliding scale of entry fees, Knudsen said, “we’ll do $30 for the first parent, $30 for the second parent or eldest child, $20 for the next child, $10 for the next child and remaining children are free.”
Beyond the 50-mile course there is the 50 km metric option. Proceeds will benefit educational programs at Furnace town.
So if you like the idea of riding 100 miles on a bike but aren’t certain you could finish, the Iron Furnace Fifty will meet you halfway.
