‘Beer Talk & Tasting’ event aims to elevate local craft beer movement

Take a trip to your favorite Ocean City watering hole and you’ll still find Miller Lite, Budweiser, Natural Light and the other usual subjects on tap and in bottles, but you’re also likely to notice a growing number of people sipping brews with funky names you’ve never heard of made by breweries you didn’t know existed. These beers, many of which are brewed in small batches within miles of where they are being drank, not only tend to be bigger on flavor and better for your body than their mass-produced counterparts, but are changing the very nature of what beer can- and should- be.

You may come to Ocean City for a rest and relaxation, but, if you look closely enough, you’ll notice your favorite vacation spot stands on the final frontier of a national revolution and is poised to create its own craft beer legacy. With 5 craft breweries in Ocean City, 5 more under an hour away (including nationally renowned Dogfish Head), and 6 others well within the confines of a day trip, the lower Eastern Shore/Delmarva area is primed to become one of the premier craft beer destinations on the East Coast.

In an effort to promote our local craft beers, OceanCity.com has partnered with the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant AssociationWorcester Country tourismSouthern Delaware tourism, and Ocean98 FM to create ShoreCraftBeer.com– a comprehensive site that raises awareness, increases interest, and educates locals and tourists about our ever-growing brewery scene.

To further its mission, ShoreCraftBeer.com will also host quarterly “Beer Talk & Tasting” events that bring together breweries, business owners, and members of the public who are thirsty to learn more about the local craft beer revolution and the men and women brewing it.

Beer Talk & Tasting will be part educational seminar and part networking happy hour that aims to enhance our local craft beer culture, create new business relationships, and build momentum for our area as a destination recognized for its unique breweries and quality beers. The result of this ongoing effort will be more breweries making better beer, increased shoulder season and off-season tourism, a higher influx of affluent visitors to our area, and a local economy stimulated by more year round jobs and more money that stays local.

The Beer Talk & Tasting gatherings will each center on a different craft beer-related theme and will rotate among the area breweries. The first event is scheduled for Monday, November 10, at Burley Oak Brewing Company, from 4:30-6:00pm and will focus on “The State of Craft Beer on the Shore,” including: a presentation on national craft beer history, trends, and demographics; a discussion about ‘why local beer is better’ with Tommy Knorr, of Evolution Craft Brewing, and Bryan Brushmiller, of Burley Oak; a paneled discussion with representatives of 9 breweries followed by a Q & A session; and networking happy hour featuring tasting samples from each brewery and snacks by Baked Dessert Cafe.

Participating breweries include: Ocean City Brewing Co.Assawoman Bay Brewing Co.Backshore Brewing Co.de Lazy Lizard Brewing Co.Fin City BrewingBurley OakTall Tales Brewing Co.Evolution, and 3rd Wave Brewing Co.

The cost of admission to Beer Talk & Tasting is $5 per person and includes 5 tasting tickets. Additional samples can be purchased at $1 each. The full agenda for the event can be found below and more details about the Eastern Shore/Delmarva craft beer scene can be found at ShoreCraftBeer.com.
